This paper presents the results of a numerical analysis for evaluating the effects of different stack terminal configurations on the odor levels estimated at the receptors located close to the plant. Stack terminals may be of different types, for example vertical unobstructed, vertical with rain cap, horizontal, gooseneck or with any slope with respect to the vertical. The comparison between CALPUFF and LAPMOD with vertical unobstructed stacks, rain capped stacks and different emission temperatures shows that the results are comparable, even though there is a tendency of LAPMOD to underpredict

AbstractSome lichens that occur in mountains and arid regions have developed an unusual anatomy resembling window-leaved plants. In these lichens, algal cells occur in thick vertical stacks (algal stacks) separated by vertical channels of light-transferring fungal hyphae (fungal stacks). We present experimental evidence that this anatomy permits higher rates of area-based CO2 assimilation in strong light, but that it also leads to higher respiration resulting in higher compensation irradiance. The net effect of this anatomy must be beneficial in regions of high insolation, as it has arisen man

Abstract The introduction of ultralow-k dielectrics is a recent milestone in the quest for higher clock speeds and lower power consumption in ICs. One tradeoff, however, is that interconnect stacks layered with low-k materials rather than SiO2 are more vulnerable to mechanical damage. This article presents a method that makes it possible to assess the mechanical integrity of interconnect stacks at the wafer level. Abstract:
The paper describes a methodology to extract linearized state-space dynamic inflow model from a generic and high fidelity aerodynamic analysis for single and coaxial helicopter rotor systems. Both hover and forward flight are studied including maneuvering and the results are demonstrated by a free-wake analysis. The proposed methodology which is founded on a Single Frequency Analysis is computationally efficient and provide the entire frequency-domain behavior of the wake inflow states. Besides being able to incorporate any advanced computational tool, the present methodology takes advantage o

Abstract:
The unconventional configuration of a 2 × two-bladed stacked rotor with a diameter of 0.82 m is studied experimentally throughout this paper. With the rotational speed kept constant at 2453 RPM and the dimensionless axial spacing fixed at 0.06, the main objective is to assess the effect of azimuthal spacing across multiple configurations in forward flight, varying the shaft angle and freestream velocity. First, an analysis of the baseline rotor in forward flight is presented, featuring four blades evenly spaced in a single plane. This is followed by results for the stacked rotor in hover fligh

Abstract:
Reinforced concrete structural slurry walls have been used in the United States since the early 1960s. The typical practice, and one that makes the economics of slurry walls particularly attractive, is to design the walls to act as both temporary excavation support and permanent basement walls. They often serve as multi-story basements and below grade parking for buildings, for tunnels, subway stations, and other buried structures. One of the early applications was for a foundation for a subway station in San Francisco, but for the most part they have been used more extensively in regions of l

To a large extent, policy outcomes are shaped by governance, including institutional arrangements and forums for cooperation among and within different layers of government. In turn, the effectiveness of intergovernmental fiscal cooperation (IFC) is affected by economic, sociopolitical, and institutional factors, including constitutional provisions and power balances among different levels of government. On the basis of a review of large federations, the authors propose options to strengthen IFC in Brazil. In particular, the effectiveness of IFC could be enhanced in Brazil by establishing foru

The Constitution (Seventy-fourth) Amendment Act 1992 sought to empower urban local bodies as a third-tier of governance. Thirty years hence, the reality of Indian ULBs is far from their initial aspirations. ULBs in most states continue to struggle on almost all dimensions of the funds, functions, and functionaries continuum. Most have limited autonomy of functioning and capacities for planning, budgeting, expenditure management, procurement, implementation, and monitoring. The fiscal space for ULBs has been shrinking in most states, especially with constraints in expansion of the overall tax b

Abstract:
Under the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program, Underwriters Laboratories examined fire service ventilation and suppression practices as well as the impact of changes in modern house geometries. There has been a steady change in the residential fire environment over the past several decades. These changes include larger homes, more open floor plans and volumes, and increased synthetic fuel loads. This investigation examined the influence of these changes to the fire behavior and subsequent impact on firefighter tactics relative to horizont

Abstract:
The impact of carbon taxes on consumer welfare and emissions in the transportation sector is influenced by both regulatory and market dynamics. As the sources of climate emissions from transportation evolve, how will this impact change in the future? Utilizing extensive data from retail fuel stations and wholesalers in Colombia, we estimate the factors affecting the pass-through of a carbon tax on gasoline prices. Our findings reveal that the pass-through to Colombian consumers is significant, often exceeding one. This phenomenon of ``overshifting" vanishes when markets are regulated or when g

Channel hydrology, hydraulics, and sediment composition are key variables to calculating vertical and horizontal channel movement. A variety of methods are available for estimating channel bed scour, bank erosion, and channel migration with fewer available to predict avulsion potential. These methods vary in complexity from simplified empirical and theoretical equations to complex multi-dimensional models that may be used to understand potential hydrotechnical threats to pipelines and other structures. The Tahoma Creek Bridge on the southwest side of Mount Rainier is an essential crossing for year-round vehicular access to Mount Rainier National Park (MORA). This site is also exposed to significant hydrologic variability, which the current structure was not designed to withstand. Locally enhanced vertical increases to the riverbed elevation, known as aggradation, threaten the structure?s long-term viability. The purpose of this report is to (1) clarify the details of channel maintenance operations related to the bridge; (2) synthesize the natural and human influences of sediment deposition i
