ABSTRACTThis article examines the public culture of military associations, and their veteran membership, in inter-war Glasgow. It follows their parades and beery reunions to consider the public meanings of such acts. That these claims to civic recognition were met by a congregation of civic elements allows us to view the inter-war creation of civic identity from a new and enlightening vantage point. But this culture also allows us to encompass the vitality, and distinctly urban character, of the memory of the Great War within inter-war society. Cities provided alternative channels for the vete

The Vietnam War left in its wake not only physical casualties but psychological ones as well. Among the most significant features of the war’s aftermath are numerous and well-documented cases of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite having been observed by writers, scholars, and others as early as biblical times, it was not until the emotional and psychological aftereffects suffered by Vietnam veterans became too numerous and significant to ignore that medicine, psychology, and the U.S. military undertook serious study of the disorder. Edward’s breach of honour triggers the destabilisation of Clarence’s character, which, the article argues, suffers a traumatic breakdown in consequence of the murdering of Prince Edward. AbstractThe anthropology of militaries in industrial countries is a relatively young discipline, which has seen significant growth since the end of the Cold War and the advent of the “new wars.” The chapter focuses on the anthropological analysis of social and cultural concerns related to (and derived from) the armed forces, war, and the provision for national security. It charts the main clusters of issues anthropologists are engaged with and explains the unique contribution of this discipline through the following themes: militarization, fieldwork, military organization and units, gender, military families, veterans, and medical anthropology. This chapter concludes with a discussion of anthropology’s contribution to military education.

Charts are provided to compare military to civilian levels of responsibility, and government information sources are listed to further understand the composition of military occupations and population cohorts to improve targeting of talent. It provides further information sources to gain a better understanding of military knowledge, skills, and abilities. Persons experiencing homelessness, including homeless Veterans, increasingly use cell phones, computers, and other digital devices. In this chapter, the authors discuss use of technology by homeless Veterans, exploring ways that technology can facilitate access to information on resources including housing, job opportunities, health care, and personal health management. Also addressed is the role of technology in supporting development and maintenance of social networks and social capital for these marginalized Veterans. There have been several research reports specifically on homeless Veterans’ access to and use of information technologies. One study found that 89% of homeless Veteran survey participants had a cell phone. Like housed cell phone users, homeless Veterans use cell phones to stay in touch with family and friends and to complete specific tasks and transactions. Special challenges exist regarding technology use among homeless Veterans, including loss and theft of phones, keeping phones charged, and affording the service costs. The discussion in this chapter is informed by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which states that perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness affect attitudes toward use, intention to use, and ultimately, actual use in light of contextual, external variables. External variables for homeless Veterans include tenuous living arrangements, significant financial challenges, military culture, diverse experiences during military service, and complex medical and mental health conditions. The chapter concludes by looking at advances in technology that may be beneficial for homeless Veterans and also the challenges, related to technology, that are likely to continue for this population.

Abstract:
This chapter suggests that the awkward nature, purpose and outcome of the Korean War led to its relative neglect in British history and popular culture, unlike in the United States where both its anti-Communist rhetoric and proximity to the Vietnam War gave its veterans greater prominence. Together with its distance from Britain, unclear war aims and the growing dominance of the Second World War in British culture, charted in the other chapters of this book, this final chapter examines the ‘forgotten’ war in the context of post-1953 British history. It first examines the significance of forgetting war in the twentieth century, before turning to Korea’s cultural history in the post-1953 era and the lives and attitudes of its ‘forgotten’ veterans. It suggests that Britain’s Korean War veterans have a unique degree of agency as guardians of this war.

The book closes with a short glimpse into the history of Jewish veterans after 1945, as the survivors of the camps returned to Germany, outlining ruptures and continuities in comparison with the pre-Nazi period. Jewish veterans imposed different narratives on their experiences under National Socialism. As the past receded into the distance, it became a concern for the survivors to engage with the past, which they variously looked back on with nostalgia, disillusionment, or bitter anger. Although National Socialism threatened to erase everything that Jewish veterans of World War I had achieved and sacrificed, sought to destroy the identity they had constructed as soldiers in the service of the nation, as well as bonds with gentile Germans that had been forged under fire during the war, threatened to sever their connections to the status they had earned as soldiers of the Great War and defenders of the fatherland, their minds, their values and their character remained intact. Jewish veterans preserved their sense of German identity.

Abstract:
The prospect that people can be resilient to—or even grow from—a stressful experience is an alluring possibility—especially so for soldiers and veterans. Some have proposed that deploying and military experiences provide soldiers with enduring mental resources and toughness that are protective for the rest of their lives. However, definitive evidence for growth and resilience among military personnel has proved elusive. Part of the unknowns about growth and resilience can be attributable to how people think about and model questions related to growth and resilience. In this chapter, the author provides two empirical examples—changes in depressive symptoms among veterans and changes in character strengths among deploying soldiers—to illustrate how different conceptualizations, methods, and analyses can dramatically change the inferences we make about growth and resilience. The demonstrations provide an increased understanding about methodological flexibility in the study of growth and resilience and some expectations about how and why individuals might change in response to adversity.

Could you spot a Roman veteran? The hunt described here for his distinguishing features was productive and satisfying, as might actually have been predicted, given the deeply rooted links in Greco-Roman thinking (consider Homer’s Thersites, or Theophrastus’ Characters) between appearance or manners and character or activity. Specific evidence is given here which does seem to suggest that legionaries were enthusiastic storytellers, as in Tibullus 1.10.31f.: ‘So the soldier may tell me his deeds as I drink and draw his camp in the wine.’ Such commonplaces are so common precisely because they really did correspond to daily usage, as any returned veteran, by land or by sea, would naturally have done, and in fact often did, in taverns empire-wide, and so well that historians in the end pick up the result and immortalize it.
