Morris, Joshua. Moral Injury among Returning Veterans. The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2021. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781978721210.

Full text
Abstract:
Josh Morris privileges the voices of veterans to argue that returning soldiers need families, friends, and religious communities to listen to their stories with compassion to avoid amplifying the effects of moral injury. When society greets returning soldiers in ways that reinforce cultural norms that frame military service as heroic, rather than acknowledging its ambiguities and harmful effects, it exacerbates moral injury and keeps veterans from resolving inner conflicts and coping effectively with civilian life. Morris, a military chaplain and veteran who served in Afghanistan, knows these difficulties first hand. Using stories from other veterans, Morris helps us see how cultural assumptions about military service can complicate moral injury and a veteran's return home. Drawing from liberation theologies, ideology critique, and Antonio Gramsci's advocacy for the working class, the book suggests useful perspectives and spiritual care resources for military chaplains, religious leaders, caregivers, and concerned civilians. Morris argues that military chaplains are uniquely positioned to help returning soldiers resist the amplification of existing moral injury. Moving from “thank you for your service” to liberative solidarity can galvanize resistance and make change possible.

Gordon, Suzanne, Steve Early, and Jasper Craven. Our Veterans. Duke University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478023142.

Full text
Abstract:
In Our Veterans, Suzanne Gordon, Steve Early, and Jasper Craven explore the physical, emotional, social, economic, and psychological impact of military service and the problems that veterans face when they return to civilian life. The authors critically examine the role of advocacy organizations, philanthropies, corporations, and politicians who purport to be “pro-veteran.” They describe the ongoing debate about the cost, quality, and effectiveness of healthcare provided or outsourced by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). They also examine generational divisions and political tensions among veterans, as revealed in the tumultuous events of 2020, from Black Lives Matter protests to the Trump-Biden presidential contest. Frank and revealing, Our Veterans proposes a new agenda for veterans affairs linking service provision to veterans to the quest for broader social programs benefiting all Americans.

Abstract:
This four-volume set provides a history of veterans' healthcare that examines programs of care and veterans' special needs, and offers insight into future directions for veteran's healthcare in the 21st century. This comprehensive contribution to understanding veterans' healthcare uniquely draws on a national and international cadre of scientists and practitioners, both within the Department of Veterans Affairs and specialists beyond the institution, providing a matrix view of veterans' healthcare, past, present, and future, both nationally and internationally. This work will prove an essential reference set that examines and identifies veterans' healthcare through the first decade of the 21st century, invaluable to health and psychology researchers and students, policymakers, social workers, and veterans. The Praeger Handbook of Veterans' Health: History, Challenges, Issues, and Developmentsis organized to cover four key elements. Volume I presents a history of veterans' healthcare, the various veteran's eras, and the global healthcare provided to our veterans. Volume II examines several of the programs of care and veterans' special needs. Volume III is devoted to the several aspects of mental health care, treatment, and rehabilitation services offered to veterans through the healthcare system. The last volume offers insights into future directions for veterans' healthcare.

Abstract:
The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has the largest nationally integrated, publicly funded health care system in the country, providing care to approximately 8 million military veterans. It is a training ground for a majority of medical, nursing, and allied health professionals in the United States and has a record of more than 90 years of health care research and innovation. Mental health care for veterans has evolved considerably from World War I to the post-9/11 era, and lessons learned from veterans of Vietnam and more recent wars have been informing changes in practices and procedures. Improvement of mental health care has been a VA institutional priority, and the VA has led in the implementation of integrated care and recovery-oriented services. It is a pioneer in post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury research. This chapter introduces the VA structures and programs developed to enhance access to services and delivery of evidence-based best practices.

Abstract:
Providing a compelling look at veterans’ policy, this book describes why the Republican party is considered the party for veterans despite the fact that Congressional Democrats are responsible for a greater number of policy initiatives. The United States is home to 21 million veterans, and Veterans’ Affairs is the second-largest federal department, with a budget exceeding $119 billion. Many veterans, however, remain under-served. Republicans are seen as veterans’ champions, and they send the majority of Congressional constituent communications on veterans’ issues, yet they are lead sponsors on only 37 percent of bills considered by the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee. What accounts for this discrepancy? Drawing on thousands of e-newsletters sent from Congress to constituents, Congress and U.S. Veterans: From the GI Bill to the VA Crisis argues that the distribution of veterans across districts and the Republican Party is based on government spending, which pulls Republican legislators in opposite directions. This eye-opening book offers a history of veterans’ programs, highlights legislative leaders and the most pressing policy areas for reform, identifies the issues most often discussed by members of Congress from each party, points out which Congresspeople have acted on veterans’ issues and which have not, and offers an analysis of veteran population distribution and legislative policy preferences. Features • Includes content from nearly 20,000 e-newsletters sent from Congress members to constituents to demonstrate the differences in how Congress discusses and legislates veterans’ issues • Provides a detailed description of the key legislative players, proposals, and communication strategies surrounding veterans’ policies • Offers advice on providing for the future of veterans’ policies and describes the risks and benefits associated with moving veterans’ care into private industry • Offers the first in-depth case study on the implementation of the post-9/11 GI bill • Suggests the scandal surrounding the 2010 Phoenix VA hospital is an example of partisan differences in communication tactics

Kleespies, Phillip M., and Christopher G. AhnAllen. Evaluating and Managing Suicide Risk in Veterans. Edited by Phillip M. Kleespies. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199352722.013.14.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the findings on which populations of military veterans are known to be at risk of suicide. The impact of military culture on veterans as well as the impact of deployment, combat trauma, and sexual trauma are discussed, as well as the difficulties of readjusting to civilian life, particularly when the veteran has served in a combat zone. The chapter reviews some of the barriers that veterans must deal with when in need of mental health care. The limits of suicide prediction are discussed and a model for assessing suicide risk using risk factors within high risk diagnoses, including risk in combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder, is presented. Finally, suggestions for managing suicide risk in veterans are discussed. Since veterans are more likely to own firearms and commit suicide with a firearm than nonveterans, an emphasis is placed on employing means restriction counseling for veterans at risk.
