ABSTRACTAmong the three embryonic germ layers, the mesoderm plays a central role in the establishment of the vertebrate body plan. The mesoderm is specified by secreted signaling proteins from the FGF, Nodal, BMP and Wnt families. No new classes of extracellular mesoderm-inducing factors have been identified in more than two decades. Here, we show that the pinhead (pnhd) gene encodes a secreted protein that is essential for the activation of a subset of mesodermal markers in the Xenopus embryo. Abstract Introduction The caudal-type homeobox (Cdx) gene family has been mainly studied during early development for its role in axial elongation and antero-posterior patterning. More recently, Cdx genes were shown to regulate embryonic hematopoiesis by interactions with the canonical Wnt pathway and Hox genes. The role of Cdx genes in adult hematopoiesis remains poorly understood. Adult hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells derived from healthy murine bone marrow (BM) express low levels of Cdx1 and Cdx4 but not Cdx2. Abstract:
Patients with skin and soft tissue infections may appear with the abscess. Erroneous diagnosis of these entities is common, and should carefully consider the possible alternative diagnoses. Risk for developing skin abscess factors includes disruption of the skin barrier, edema, venous insufficiency, and immune suppression. However, healthy individuals who have no risk factors may also develop these diseases. The most common microbiologic cause of abscess, a commonly group Streptococcus or Streptococcus pyogenes; Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-resistant strains) is a notable but less common cause. The most common microbiologic cause of skin abscess is S. aureus; a skin abscess can be caused by more than one pathogen. The diagnosis is based on skin abscess usually on the clinical manifestations. It must be subject to patients with disposable abscess incision and drainage, with a test of culture and susceptibility of materials wet. There is no justification for the blood of patients in the cultures of the abovementioned circumstances. It can be a useful radiographic examination to determine whether the skin abscess is present (via ultrasound) to distinguish cellulitis from osteomyelitis (via magnetic resonance imaging). There may be a justification for radiological assessment in patients with immune suppression, diabetes, venous insufficiency, or lymphedema in patients with persistent symptoms of systemic lymphatic obstruction.

This chapter analyses the European Union during Brexit, explaining how the EU institutions and Member States reacted to the UK’s decision to leave the EU. It outlines how they went about this in the course of the withdrawal negotiations. The EU institutions and Member States managed to adopt a very united stance vis-à-vis a withdrawing state, establishing effective institutional mechanisms and succeeding in imposing their strategic preferences in the negotiations with the UK. Nevertheless, the EU was also absorbed during Brexit by internal preparations to face both the scenario of a ‘hard Brexit’—the UK leaving the EU with no deal—and of a ‘no Brexit’—with the UK subsequently delaying exit and extending its EU membership. Finally, during Brexit the EU increasingly started working as a union of 27 Member States—the EU27—which in this format opened a debate on the future of Europe and developed new policy initiatives, especially in the field of defence and military cooperation.

The chapter then describes the Puttnam Inquiry into the Future of Public Service Television and sets out the book's purpose, which is to contribute to the discussion about what kind of public service media people want and to provide some blueprints for future policy action. The women’s majesty is always respectable but presently the cruelty of humans and the jeopardy on women are not leading us towards hell only but also degrading our sublimity. A lot of women were sexually and mentally harassed while some are beaten to death and many of the cases are even not registered in the papers. Generally, when the wrong behavior happening to the woman, at that time she alone fought with them, no one comes to save her life because no one saw her and if she went to the police, she has no proof. So, for the safety of the women, we think to design such a device so that the woman could get help from the police department and her family too. The device contains e-components like GSM, GPS, ESP32 camera module, battery, etc. The whole design will be coded in the IC ATmega328p. Later on, the design will be printed on the PCB. The device will be in a very small design in the form of “Borla” a Rajasthani traditional wear. Because of the device, we will make a direct touch with the lady and along with the live tracking of that woman. It will also help us in tracking delinquents to put them behind the bars with adequate proofs. With the help of GSM, GPS the nearest police department and her family members will get the location of the woman via mobile message and the police will lead the rest. It will give a complete shield to the woman just with a single touch. In this paper, we tried to reduce the cost of women’s shields with help of value analysis &optimization.

Abstract:
With electronic commerce revolutionizing the traditional way of doing business, electronic auction service has been one of the many business models that were proven to be a success. The existence and development of numerous auction Web sites, such as eBay (www.ebay.com) and OnSale Inc. (www.onsale.com) have demonstrated the survivability of electronic auctions in online transactions. Considering some of the new forms of electronic auctions currently on the Internet, such as the “Get it together” network (www.accompany.com), where group bidding and negotiation is applied, it could be said that the definition of auctions is no longer restricted to that of its traditional meaning but also has been extended electronically. An auction may be an ideal way for a business to sell excess inventory and goods because it has attracted many of the common people that do not really participate in the real-world counterpart. However, current Web-based auction (e-auction) systems suffer from shortcomings in the following aspects: • Fairness and Friendliness: Different conditions of Internet connections, such as varying speeds, introduce unfairness among participating bidders. • Security and Privacy: The messages transmitted via the Internet are exposed to malicious attacks and may incur security problems. Also, in an auction, users may wish to be guaranteed privacy, for example, a bidder may not want to disclose his or her real identity until the auction closes and he or she is declared the winner. • Intelligence and Flexibility: It is important for an e-auction service to be intelligent to cater to the needs of potential auction customers who are not into the Internet. However, current Web-based auction systems require too much user intervention. Because the process can be tedious and risky for these users, they may not want to engage in e-auction services. Thus, it would be commercially profitable if intelligent assistance is provided.

There are about 265 living species of marsupial mammals, the majority in Australasia, about 60 in South America, and a handful in Central and North America (Macdonald 2001). They are distinguishable from the placental mammals by many characters, but most profoundly by their mode of reproduction. Compared to the placentals, there is only a relatively brief intrauterine period, during which the embryo exchanges nutrients and gases with the mother via a simple, non-invasive yolk sac placenta. There is no development of the complex, highly invasive chorio-allantoic placenta found in the placentals with the partial exception of the bandicoots in which there is a small, short-lived, but true chorio-allantoic placenta. The marsupial neonate is born at a very immature stage, and most of the total maternal provision comes via lactation. In the majority of cases the young are carried in a pouch, although there are exceptions to this. Whether pouched or not, the young attach themselves continuously to the teat for an extended period of time. There has been much discussion about whether the marsupial mode of reproduction is ancestral to that of the placental mammals, or whether it represents an independent, parallel acquisition of viviparity. Lillegraven (1979), Lillegraven et al. (1987), and Szalay (1994), for example, regarded the marsupial mode as primitive and inefficient compared to the placental mode, and that it was failure of the marsupials to evolve a mechanism to prevent immunological rejection of the embryo by the mother that prevented any extension of the gestation period. Placentals, they argued, solved the problem by evolving the trophoblast layer of embryonic cells that performs the function of preventing the maternal antibodies from damaging the embryo. Conversely, several authors such as Parker (1977) have argued that the marsupial mode is an alternative, but equally well-adapted strategy of reproduction to that of placentals. It is one of low investment but low risk, and is therefore suitable for a more unpredictable environment. Tyndale-Biscoe and Renfree (1987) suggested that primitive marsupials and placentals had quite similar reproduction, with relatively immature neonates and a relatively long lactation period. Subsequent specialisation in the two groups went in different directions.

Schmidt, Vivien A. "The European Parliament." In Europe's Crisis of Legitimacy. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198797050.003.0008.

Abstract:
Chapter 8 discusses the European Parliament’s pathway to legitimacy, and its transition from having “no size at all” in Eurozone governance to increasing influence. The chapter begins with an analysis of the EP’s sources of power—which were initially very few, given its marginalization in Eurozone governance—and of its growing throughput legitimacy. Although the most input legitimate of EU actors in principle, in practice it has had limited relevance to citizens and has been far removed from them as well as from national parliaments—themselves the biggest losers in Eurozone crisis governance. But the EP’s lack of remit did not stop it from using its input legitimacy to enhance its own procedural exercise of “voice,” deployed increasingly critically to demand accountability from other EU actors. The EP also slowly gained influence as the “go-to” body for other EU actors in search of legitimation via a political accountability forum. The chapter follows with a discussion of the Janus-faced public perceptions of the EP’s role in Eurozone governance, moving from views of the European Parliament as a talking shop increasingly toward its being a potential equal partner. The chapter shows that initially the EP was a talking shop that largely went along with Council and Commission initiatives, in keeping with its minimal powers, but that over time the EP gained increasing powers both formally, through legislation, and informally, in particular as other EU actors turned more and more to the EP for legitimation by giving accounts to an input-legitimate accountability body.

Abstract:
The vast reaches of central Asia are redolent with history, with stirring tales of Marco Polo’s epic journeys and all the romance of the Silk Road, an arduous caravan route that connected Asia and the West for hundreds of years. The archaeology of both central Asia and the Silk Road has yet to reveal all their secrets, for the area presents formidable obstacles for even the most experienced researchers and travelers. A century ago, the obstacles were even more severe—no rail lines, no roads beyond caravan tracks and horse trails, and endemic political instability, to say nothing of harsh deserts and high mountain passes. Despite these obstacles, Afghanistan, Tibet, and other countries along the Silk Road were the arena for what became known in the nineteenth century as the “great game,” the hide-and-seek struggle between Russia and Britain for control of a strategically vital area north of British India. Here, archaeological travel was in the hands of explorers and truly dedicated scientists, and certainly was not the domain of tourists. The logistics and enormous distances ensured that anyone traveling in central Asia vanished from civilization for months, and more often for years. During the nineteenth century, the occasional British army officer and political agent, and also French and German travelers, ventured widely through the region, although their concerns were predominantly military and strategic rather than scientific. The great game culminated in Colonel Francis Younghusband’s military and diplomatic expedition for Britain into Tibet in 1904, prompted by rumors that Russia had its eye on the country. After Younghusband’s return to India and because of his account of the fascinating, mountainous regions to the north, the rugged terrain that formed India’s northern frontier became a place where solitary young officers went exploring, hunting, or climbing mountains for sport. During this period, only a handful of travelers penetrated central Asia with scientific objectives, among them the Swedish explorer Sven Hedin, who traveled via Russia and the Pamirs to China in 1893–1897. He nearly died crossing the western Taklimakan Desert in the Tarim Basin to reach the Khotan River. This huge basin was a melting pot of different religions and cultures, a bridge for silk caravans between East and West.

Harvey, David. "How America’s Power Grew." In The New Imperialism. Oxford University Press, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199264315.003.0005.

Abstract:
Imperialism is a word that trips easily off the tongue. But it has such different meanings that it is difficult to use it without clarification as an analytic rather than a polemical term. I here define that special brand of it called ‘capitalist imperialism’ as a contradictory fusion of ‘the politics of state and empire’ (imperialism as a distinctively political project on the part of actors whose power is based in command of a territory and a capacity to mobilize its human and natural resources towards political, economic, and military ends) and ‘the molecular processes of capital accumulation in space and time’ (imperialism as a diffuse political-economic process in space and time in which command over and use of capital takes primacy). With the former I want to stress the political, diplomatic, and military strategies invoked and used by a state (or some collection of states operating as a political power bloc) as it struggles to assert its interests and achieve its goals in the world at large. With the latter, I focus on the ways in which economic power flows across and through continuous space, towards or away from territorial entities (such as states or regional power blocs) through the daily practices of production, trade, commerce, capital flows, money transfers, labour migration, technology transfer, currency speculation, flows of information, cultural impulses, and the like. What Arrighi refers to as the ‘territorial’ and the ‘capitalist’ logics of power are rather different from each other. To begin with, the motivations and interests of agents differ. The capitalist holding money capital will wish to put it wherever profits can be had, and typically seeks to accumulate more capital. Politicians and statesmen typically seek outcomes that sustain or augment the power of their own state vis-à-vis other states. The capitalist seeks individual advantage and (though usually constrained by law) is responsible to no one other than his or her immediate social circle, while the statesman seeks a collective advantage and is constrained by the political and military situation of the state and is in some sense or other responsible to a citizenry or, more often, to an elite group, a class, a kinship structure, or some other social group.

Abstract:
The widespread digitization of technologies, materials, and processes, and the constant use of the internet for communication and consumption, have led to dramatic changes in our lifestyle. We begin Chapter 12 with the internet and social media’s enabling people to better connect with family, friends, acquaintances, and communities. There can be more mutual awareness and closeness. Yet we may never be able to ‘unplug’; the line between work and play can become increasingly blurred. Having no down time is one manifestation of a broader corrosive phenomenon—technology or social media addiction. We shall see how a battle is being waged between those who want to engage us with more seductive user experiences, and those who would counsel a saner life in which technology and media play a more modest role. We then move from electronic communications to the physical world. We shall consider the effect of ubiquitous digital media, especially the so-called Internet of Things, in which almost all objects become digital. Such objects can sense people near them and general aspects of the world. They behave based on what they sense. One form of this is the rapid integration of voice assistants in everyday objects such as speakers and lamps. People can also transcend the real world by moving into virtual worlds, via augmented reality and virtual reality. The former allows the world to be enhanced with computer-generated visuals and sounds, while the latter allows immersion into worlds that are totally synthetic. We look at how people meet one another nowadays, and the increasingly important role of internet dating. For those who find intimacy or romance with people too challenging or insufficiently satisfying, and as robots become more and more lifelike, there are new opportunities for intimacy and for sexual satisfaction using sex robots, a development in which there are passionate advocates on both sides. How we do financial transactions is also changing. Cash is disappearing; money is becoming increasingly digital and intangible. Investors speculate in cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, which are implemented with an ingenious secure networked digital ledger known as blockchain.
