Abstract:
Recent scholarship has demonstrated that virtual communities can be traced in the online ‘tells’ retained by popular virtual settlements like Facebook and Twitter. In this article, the authors push this line of research toward an analysis of pre-requisites and constrains of virtual settlements that determine the understanding of community life across settlements. The approach followed is grounded on a ‘practice lens’ that views virtual communities as enacted cyber-structures revealed through cultural artifacts facilitated by affordances inscribed into virtual settlements. The presence or absence of key affordances determines not only what is retained as online ‘tells’ in a virtual settlement but also the type and range of cultural artifacts, as well as how these artifacts are used across virtual settlements.

Abstract:
Given the importance of sustainable urban development and quality of life, the problem of informal settlements is now entering a new phase of research and social capital, as an important aspect of the quality of life in such settlements, is being widely explored. Aiming at realizing sustainable development and recovering liveliness in these settlements, the present study seeks to compile social capital factors of the quality of life in informal settlements. The methodology is descriptive-analytical and the indicators are determined by means of logical argumentation. According to the findings, outstanding indicators of the quality of life in informal settlements turn out to be trust, norm-orientation, as well as network connections in direct evaluation and participation, attitude of voluntariness, social cohesion, sense of security, informal social relations, as well as adherence to values in indirect evaluation. If investigated and improved, these indicators will play a major role in sustainable development

Abstract:
Today, the use of fossil-based fuels and construction activities on a global and regional scale have effective climatic and environmental consequences all over the world, leading to disruption of living spaces. For this reason, it is important that the structures have sustainable properties that will reduce environmental impacts throughout the entire life cycle. Millions of people go to various countries and become refugees due to world wars and migrations. Here, ecological settlements and the criteria for the settlement are needed in order to make these settlements healthy. The ecological settlements in Turkey (Gaziantep, Bursa and Eskisehir) as well as in the world (China, Germany and Spain), listed the criteria that are necessary for these places, are revised in this review article.

Abstract:
Informal settlements are mushrooming in Mangaung. The essential questions are what the implications of the Christian Gospel in this situation facing inhabitants of informal settlements in Mangaung are, and how the Gospel can inspire people living in dire circumstances to strive for the fullness of life. The needs of people should be determined first. Listening to people living in informal settlements is essential. Settlements in Mangaung were approached and qualitative research was conducted. The Gospel gives an encompassing and holistic answer to people’s needs. All aspects, from the basic need for daily bread to the expectation of a new future, are relevant. Evangelism and humble service should be part of those bringing the Gospel to people living in informal settlements. A relation with Christ is all-important in inspiring a person to experience the fullness of life. The total person should, however, be brought to Christ to experience a full relationship with Him. In order to inspire, the Gospel should be brought by emphasising the glory of Christ so that the person can indeed hear and experience it, and be redeemed of and by Christ.

Abstract:
To explore the future development state of urban and rural settlements, we combined random forest algorithm (RFA) and cellular automata (CA) to simulate high precision in urban and rural settlements in Aksu city. The settlement distribution was predicted for the next 10 years, and suggestions for urban and rural settlements were proposed based on a “production–life–ecology” space. The results show the following: Transportation factors and administrative location have an important influence on the development of settlements, and infrastructure has a greater impact on the development of settlements. The overall accuracy of the 2019 settlement distribution obtained through the RFA–CA model simulation is 93.8%, with a G-mean coefficient of 0.815. The simulation accuracy is better and more suitable for the simulation and prediction of settlement expansion than the logistic-CA model. The forecasted settlement expansion in 2029 for Aksu city is 58.36 km2 of settlement expansion compared to the 2019 settlement distribution, with an overall growth trend for sparse north-south and dense central areas. This study analyzed the causes of settlement expansion in 19 regions of Aksu city, explored the main function of “production–life–ecology” space in different areas, and proposed layout optimizations from the perspective of production, life, and ecology. The results of this study can provide a reference for the spatial planning and rural revitalization strategy of Aksu city.

Abstract:
On August 9, 2009, Typhoon Morakot struck Taiwan, triggering landslides and debris flows and destroying transportation infrastructure in the southern mountains. Many settlements in this area were isolated due to road closure. Residents were trapped in the settlements and unable to evacuate to safe places. Also, emergency goods were unable to be transported to the settlements. In order to minimize the loss of life and property associated with future typhoon, public administrators should evacuate residents before access routes to settlements are affected. In this study, settlements in Lao-Nong River basin of Southern Taiwan were ranked in accordance to isolation susceptibility. Susceptibility was estimated by overlaying maps of landslides, debris flows, temporary roads and primary mountain road layers. Criteria used to evaluate the isolation susceptibility were developed using an expert-based approach. The isolation susceptibilities of settlements were categorized into 3 levels, namely high, moderate and low.

Abstract:
The article studies methodological approaches to the environmental assessment of the quality of the environment and the quality of the population of rural settlements. The components of the “rural environment” of life activity include the factors of life support of rural residents or are the resource potential that determine the viability and vitality of the rural environment. The polystructurality of the living environment forms a special functional regime within the boundaries of rural settlements and agricultural activities. At the present stage, the population of rural settlements is experiencing the following negative factors: an increase in morbidity, genetic disorders, mortality, complication of social relations, and economic decline. The life activity of a rural resident is closely interrelated with the natural environment, agricultural activities and has wide spatial boundaries, including various spectra: home, household, objects of agricultural activity. The result of the processing is the compilation of morphometric maps. The map is the basis for creating predictive models for the course of exogenous processes. A monitoring algorithm, which collects data according to the scheme of a typical random nest selection, is important for the environmental analysis of the living environment of rural residents. The sample range, which guarantees the survey of various features of rural settlements, is calculated according to the rules of the sampling method for 145 villages. Rural settlements within the Voronezh region with a population of more than 500 people were studied in terms of medical and demographic indicators.

Abstract:
Informal settlements constitute the largest means of habitation in the urbanizing world especially in the developing countries. In Dar es Salaam, informal settlements serve over 75% of the population. Among the often-mentioned characteristics of informal settlements include the dominance of informal economic activities. In particular, spaces for trading activities are observed to be randomly distributed in the informal settlements as they serve for the everyday life of its dwellers. However, little had been studied and analysed on the role of trading in shaping socio-spatial character of informal settlements. The aforesaid called for the need to investigate the underlying trading processes and products that characterise the setting of informal settlements. Using Mlalakuwa settlement in Dar es Salaam as a case, this paper maps and analyzes the social and institutional context of trading facilities and the resulting spatial character of informal settlements. One of the key findings in this paper is that trading activities along the main roads transform most of the bounding residential houses into trading facilities. The nature and character of trading facilities appear to define the spatial character of informal settlements in the context of the coexistence of formal and informal systems.

Abstract During emergencies which occur as a result of uncontrolled effects of natural disasters, major technical and technological accidents and major epidemics of infectious diseases, the health and life of people and the persistent environmental degradation may be affected. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the vulnerability of the settlements from natural disasters and other accidents. The assessment must be professionally and scientifically established with a multidisciplinary approach. This paper defines methodology for vulnerability assessment of given populated areas during emergencies arising from uncontrolled effects of natural and other disasters which involves a complex analysis of actual hazard probabilities and the level of impact on humans, animals, property, cultural wealth, and the environment.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the ecological situation in Ukraine, defining the role, prerequisites and measures for the organization of energy-efficient ecological settlements in sustainable development, as well as the analysis of domestic and foreign design experience. The world we live in is on the brink of global catastrophe. After analyzing acute environmental problems, it was found that one of the main ways to preserve and restore natural resources, as well as improve the environmental situation is the development of energy-efficient ecological settlements. Energy-efficient ecological settlements have become particularly visible since their articulation as a social movement, since 1994, namely since the establishment of the Global Network of Eco-Settlements (GEN). Such communities existed long before the term ecovillage was founded. Ecovillages demonstrate a different way of life, aimed at a better quality of life, while reducing the ecological footprint. The idea of implementation and development of these settlements is based on solving environmental, economic and socio-cultural problems. The creation of eco-settlements is based on more relevant factors and principles, the main of which are environmental. The plan of ecological restoration and protection of the environment is possible due to the factors of organization, the main components and measures of designing energy-efficient ecological settlements in compliance with political goals. The study focuses on the special characteristics and principles of designing energy-efficient ecological settlements with low consumption of resources, which present innovative technologies, architectural planning, spatial composition, environmental and economic measures. Examining the principles and means of organization as well as the concept of sustainable development, it was found that these settlements meet all 17 global goals of sustainable development, through smooth integration and adaptation to the local natural and social environment. After defining the role in sustainable development, the most influential examples of domestic and foreign projects on urban planning aspects of the formation and spatial organization of energy efficient settlements in the dynamics of their historical development are analyzed. Such settlements will grow out of the needs and opportunities caused by new environmental constraints (due to the high population density in cities), a new level of consciousness and the need to rebuild their own state.

Abstract:
In this paper, the phenomenon of suburbanization in Ukraine is considered for the first time on the example of cottage settlements of the capital region. The issue of cottage settlements has not been studied specifically in Ukrainian human geography. A review of the achievements of foreign colleagues has revealed that they are mainly being studied as a new stage in the development of former summer cooperatives (dacha). In our opinion, it is rather one of the forms of pseudourbanization and imitation of Western European standards and forms of life. The cottage settlements have a higher quality of life than the surrounding villages and this causes social polarization within the urban agglomeration of the Ukrainian capital. It was revealed that the transport accessibility to Kyiv, the capital of the country, as well as the presence of natural attractors – the river, pond or forest plays an important role in their location. Conflicts have arisen over access to former public beaches and recreation areas. Currently, only residents of the respective cottage settlements have access to them, which causes social conflict with the local rural population. With the exception of four villages within the administrative boundaries of the capital, the rest are 10 to 30 kilometers away from the main motorways. The social stratification of cottage settlements has great importance. The most prestigious of them arose on the south direction 10 km from Kyiv. They are located in Koncha-Zaspa along the Dnieper river. Here their greatest concentration is revealed. Cottage settlements in the Koncha Zaspa area have become the main residence of the richest citizens of Ukraine. This led to the complete transformation of this settlement into a network of gated communities. Thus, a new structure of population distribution in the city agglomeration is gradually forming. It is presented on the map of accommodation of cottage settlements among traditional urban and rural settlements.

Abstract:
The transformation between the two landscapes of Cranborne Chase, the earlier characterized by ritual and ceremonial monuments the later by an agricultural landscape, encapsulates the most significant transformation in the later prehistory of Britain. Indeed, the emergence of intensive agricultural practices which employ a wider range of crops, achieve increasing levels of crop purity, enclose and manage the land according to new patterns of territoriality, and establish long-lived nucleated settlements, is a more general feature of the European Bronze Age. It was upon this foundation that the agricultural practices of the Iron Age were embedded.
