Abstract:
Golden vicary privet (Ligustrum × vicaryi Rehd.), a hybrid between L. ovalifolium ‘Aureum’ Rehd. and L. vulgare L., is widely used as a landscape shrub for horticultural ornamentation. From 2009 to 2011, a leaf spot disease of L. × vicaryi was observed in the parks in Luoyang, Henan Province, China. Lesions were initially brown and punctiform, and with age the lesions turned into elliptic, subcircular to irregular and pale brown, faintly zonate, and depressed. Fully mature lesions were mostly irregular to circular, 5 to 15 mm in diameter, centers tan to dark brown, with reddish brown to reddish purple margins of varying width. The disease eventually caused substantial premature defoliation. After infected leaves were collected from parks and maintained in a humid atmosphere, a layer of black mold developed on the surface of the lesions. Conidiophores were cylindrical, straight to slightly curved, brown, unbranched (2 to 7 septa), and were 98.5 to 403.9 μm in length, 4.5 to 6.6 μm in width. Conidia were solitary or in short chains containing two to five spores, and were cylindrical or obclavate, straight or flexuose (3 to 19 pseudosepta), pale olivaceous brown or brown when mature, and were 78.8 to 315.2 μm in length by 5.3 to 12.3 μm in width. Morphological characteristics of the fungus were similar to those of Corynespora cassiicola (Berk. & Curt.) Wei (1). Lesions on leaves were excised, surface sterilized, and plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 25°C for 2 to 3 days. A fungus was isolated from the lesions, and pure isolates that were obtained after from single spored isolates were cultured on PDA. Colonies on PDA formed concentric growth rings, abundant aerial mycelia, and were grey or dark brown in color. The isolate ST1 was selected as a representative for molecular identification. The ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region of the isolate was amplified by PCR with primers ITS1/ITS4 (3) and sequenced. BLAST analysis of the 559 bp amplicon (GenBank Accession No. KC138855) indicated 100% sequence similarity with C. cassiicola (GU138988) (2). To validate Koch's postulates, pathogenicity tests were performed by spraying leaves of five healthy potted L. vicaryi with a 106 conidia per ml aqueous suspension. Control plants were inoculated with sterile water. Plants were covered with plastic bags for 24 h after inoculation and maintained at 25°C. After 3 days, all inoculated plants showed typical symptoms, whereas water sprayed controls remained healthy. C. cassiicola was consistently reisolated from these lesions. The reisolated conidia showed the same morphological characteristics as described above. To our knowledge, this is the first report of leaf spot caused by C. cassiicola on L. × vicaryi in China. Its confirmation is a significant step toward management recommendations for growers. References: (1) M. B. Ellis et al. Corynespora cassiicola. Abstract:
Abstract Weed control is the largest expense faced in the nursery and landscape industries. Nursery growers spend $967 to $2,228/A, depending on species, for supplemental hand weeding in addition to three to four yearly herbicide applications. Herbicide-treated mulches have utility in addressing many current nursery/landscape weed control issues such as non-target herbicide losses, leaching and off-site herbicide movement, and reduction of weed control costs. The objectives of this study were to compare seven types of mulches, including Douglas fir nuggets, pine nuggets, shredded hardwood, shredded Cypress, PennMulch™, rice hulls, and cocoa shells sprayed with Surflan [aqueous solution (AS) (oryzalin) at 1.12 (0.5×) and 2.24 (1×) kg ai/ha (1.0 and 2.0 lb ai/A)] and SureGuard [(water dispersible granular (WDG) (flumioxazin) at 0.19 (0.5×) and 0.38 (1×) kg ai/ha (0.17 and 0.34 lb ai/A)] to determine efficacy on common chickweed (Stellaria media), annual bluegrass (Poa annua) and spotted spurge (Chamaesyce humistrata) and phytotoxicity to Golden vicary privet (Ligustrum × vicaryi), creeping juniper (Juniperus horizontalis ‘P.C. Youngstown’), and wintergreen boxwood (Buxusmicrophylla ‘Wintergreen’) at 45 and 115 days after treatment (DAT). The herbicide-treated mulches were compared to untreated mulches, over-the-top sprays of the herbicides and a combination spray of Surflan + SureGuard each applied at the 1× rate, described above, an industry-standard granular formulation Rout (oxyfluorfen + oryzalin) at 3.41 kg ai/ha (3.0 lb ai/A), an industry standard nonchemical alternative Geodisc™, and an untreated control. The experiment was conducted in 2001 and repeated in 2002. In 2001, 17 of 43 treatments provided commercially acceptable visual ratings at 45 DAT; 14 were herbicide treated mulches. Four of five treatments in 2001 providing acceptable control at 115 DAT were herbicide treated mulches. In 2002, three treatments providing commercially acceptable control at 45 DAT were: PennMulch™ + 0.5 × Surflan, PennMulch™ + SureGuard, and Rout. Rout was the only treatment providing commercially acceptable control at 115 DAT in 2002. Golden vicary privet exhibited the greatest phytotoxicity in both years. In 2001-2002, the over-the-top sprays of Surflan + SureGuard were the most phytotoxic treatments to Golden vicary privet when averaged across 45 and 115 DAT. The data indicated a significant herbicide × mulch interaction and that some combinations, such as hardwood + SureGuard or pine nuggets + SureGuard, increased and extended efficacy and reduced phytotoxicity versus mulches or herbicides applied alone.

Abstract:
One-year-old liners of Firebird crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica L. 'Firebird') and Vicary golden privet (Ligustrum X vicaryi) were planted in 7.6 liter containers. The growing media consisted of 3 pinebark: 1 Canadian peat moss: 1 sand and 3 sawdust: 1 Canadian peat moss: 1 sand (v/v/v). Both media were amended with NH4NO3 and dolomite. Several controlled release fertilizers at varying rates were incorporated into each medium prior to planting. Thirty, 60 and 90 days after planting, leachate samples were collected and tested for E.C. and pH. Fertilizer Sierra (17-6-10) and Osmocote (18-7-13) resulted in maximum shoot dry weight with both species and media types followed by Osmocote (24-4-8) and Escote (20-4-11). Plants grew equally well in pinebark and sawdust medium. After 30 and 60 days leachate from Sierra (17-6-10) had highest E.C. levels. Osmocote (18-7-13 and 24-4-8) recorded highest E.C. at 90 day sampling date. The sawdust medium had higher pH values than the pinebark.

Abstract:
In recent years significant focus has been placed on the first few years of a child’s life and how their experiences during this time can shape their future development (McCain & Mustard, 1999). Social policy and programs that enhance the capacity of children and their families so that positive outcomes for children are ensured are being developed and implemented throughout Australia. This paper takes up the topic, initially introduced in Children Australia (Vicary et al. 2005), but turns the focus to Aboriginal children. Despite the advances in early years policy and programs development, marginalised children, particularly those from Aboriginal backgrounds, continue to be overlooked in terms of consultation (Vicary 2002).The ramifications of this lack of consultation are profound in terms of cultural appropriateness and sensitivity. The Western Australian Office for Children and Youth has refined a model for the engagement of Aboriginal children in social policy consultation. The model is inclusive of diversity and targets the children who normally would not have their voices heard in the development of social policy. The following paper will describe the Aboriginal Child Engagement Model developed by the Office for Children and Youth in consultation with children, young people and adults from Aboriginal backgrounds. The model consists of six steps, and takes the non-Aboriginal worker from the initial engagement phase through to evaluation and relationship consolidation. The proposed model is further delineated by a case study.

Bruna, Reverter Salvador. "El Sofriment Vicari en Graham Greene i en els Escriptors Francesos del Catholic Revival." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Ramon Llull, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/131228.

Full text
Abstract:
The Catholic revival in Europe –Barbey, Bloy, Huysmans, Péguy, Claudel, Bernanos, and Mauriac– originated in the neoromantic and decadent form of French literature as a reaction against the dominant discourse of Enlightenment philosophy and the antireligious doctrines of the French Revolution. These writers made the Catholic novel into an accomplished literary form which opposed positivist thought and defended Catholicism as a powerful philosophical, political and artistic alternative to the state of religious decline in modernity. Graham Greene comes close to dramatizing the themes of the French Catholic novel elucidated by David Lodge: the idea of the sinner at the heart of Christianity, the criticism of materialism, the tireless pursuit of the erring soul by God and the mystical substitution or vicarious suffering. Unlike the wisdom of rationalist humanism which aims at solving all the problems without God, the concept of the vicarious suffering involves always a world based on the fall of man, where evils can be overcome by accessing the Invisible through the visible. In fact, the dramatic action of some Catholic novels develops into an orthodox way this doctrine of substituting oneself for the sake of the other, a participation in Christ’s mystical substitution on the cross. However, Greene explores this idea in the extreme, maliciously pushing it to its ultimate dramatic potential; that’s why he brought a new voice to the techniques of the French Catholic novel: a voice of doubt, questioning and irony, as opposed to the certainty and belief in efficacious means that led ineluctably to salvation or damnation. This thesis examines Greene’s views on the mystical substitution or vicarious suffering, which are more unorthodox than those of French novelists. In spite of an apparent lack of imagination, emotion and inner availability which seems to paralyze the reluctant and outsider heroes of his novels –such as Rose in Brighton Rock, the priest in The Power and the Glory, the unfortunate Scobie in The Heart of the Matter, Sarah in The End of the Affair, and even Querry in A Burnt-Out Case–, these main characters carry out unexpected and sublime acts of compassion. They offer the loss of life, faith, peace, love or eternal salvation in exchange for avoiding physical or spiritual evils to other people, who are poor and rootless too. In one sense, vicarious suffering in Greene’s fiction tries to test literarily “the appalling strangeness of the mercy of God”.

Abstract:
The Days of Victory is a piece of music for a chamber orchestra of sixteen players, approximately thirteen minutes in duration. The accompanying analytical essay provides an extensive general description of its systems of pitch organization, and a more specific account of their operation in this piece. These systems function by linking dyads together to create a harmonic language that favours asymmetrical chord formations. Also included is an outline of its form, which uses four contrasting types of sections in recurrence. The essay comments on the stylistic tendencies of the piece in terms of rhythm, texture, and orchestration. This is followed by a brief exploration of the aesthetic implications of the music in relation to its title, which is drawn from a short excerpt of the Koran.
