Abstract:
We evaluate Vickers hardness and true instrumented indentation test (IIT) hardness of 24 metals over a wide range of mechanical properties using just IIT parameters by taking into account the real contact morphology beneath the Vickers indenter. Correlating the conventional Vickers hardness, indentation contact morphology, and IIT parameters for the 24 metals reveals relationships between contact depths and apparent material properties. We report the conventional Vickers and true IIT hardnesses measured only from IIT contact depths; these agree well with directly measured hardnesses within ±6%

Titanium alloy castings are made by means of induction melting technology. The relationships thickness of lamellar α+β phase and tensile strength, yield strength, elongation percentage, and Vickers-hardness, as well as the effect of tensile property on the Vickers-hardness are investigated for Ti-6Al-4V alloy castings. The results show that the relationships between thickness of lamellar α+β phase, and tensile strength, yield strength, specific elongation, and Vickers-hardness meet the Hall-Petch equation. And the tensile property increases linearly with Vickers-hardness.

It is shown that the agreement between the results from depth-sensing indentation and the reference values can be improved by additional corrections, for the calculation of the indentation area. The focus of this research was to quantify the post-fire mechanical properties of 5083-H116 and 6082-T6 aluminum alloys. Post-fire exposure is considered heating the material to a particular temperature then cooling the material back to room temperature. The research included evaluating parent materials as well as welded samples. Post-fire mechanical properties of parent materials were evaluated at temperatures ranging from ambient to 500oC with isothermal and transient heating. Changes in material properties were evaluated through static tensile tests and hardness testing on cooled samples.

Hardness Testing: Principles and Applications is an in-depth study of one of the most fundamental properties of materials and the tools and techniques that have been developed to measure it. Hardness, as defined in the first chapter, is a type of resistance to deformation, the roots of which lie in the packing density of atoms and the bonding forces that keep them in place. As subsequent chapters explain, the hardness of metals, plastics, rubber, and ceramics can be measured as a response to an applied stress (whether static or dynamic), via noncontact sensing, or through an instrumented inden

This research deals with the development of the Vickers hardness knowledge graph, mapping the example dataset in them, and exporting the data-mapped knowledge graph as a machine-readable Resource Description Framework (RDF). Modeling the knowledge graph according to the standardized test procedure and using the appropriate upper-level ontologies were taken into consideration to develop the highly standardized, incorporable, and industrial applicable models. Furthermore, the Ontopanel approach was utilized for mapping the real experimental data in the developed knowledge graphs and the resultin

Abstract Fully automated Vickers measurement systems with image analysis have been commonly used for over 20 years to measure case depth in carburizing, nitriding, and surface hardening processes. One of the most frequently discussed issues is the reproducibility of results both within individual systems and between different systems. This paper presents examples from industrial users to illustrate the ongoing challenges with these systems and the main points of discussion. The examples highlight the difficulties that arise even when systems operate within the accepted accuracy range of existi

Abstract:
Pressed specimens of α-Si3N4 (SN-E10) powder with Y2O3 and Al2O3 additives were successfully sintered without a serious mass loss at a temperature range of 1550-1700°C in an air atmosphere furnace using a set of specially designed, high purity A12O3 crucibles, Si3N4 packing powder and A12O3 filler. The agglomeration on sintering of both the packing powder and Al2O3 filler was encountered, but it could be optimized by using coarse size materials. Additionally, the deterioration of Al2O3 crucibles leading to cracking after several times of usage is still to be improved. On the contrary, Si3N4 ce

It is understood that this work relates to issues arising from a failure in a pipe carrying wet sour gas, in which cracking developed from a shallow hard feature, 1 to 3mm deep and about 50mm in diameter. The overall aim is to prevent such failures, and samples of material from this program, selected on the basis of the work reported here, have been subjected to sour testing under PRCI project SSC-2-14, and there is also a link to PRCI project NDE-4-11, which is exploring non-destructive techniques for the detection of local hard regions. This report presents the techniques used in the assessm
