Abstract:
Review of the book by British politician Jacob Rees-Mogg, published on the occasion of Queen Victoria’s 200th anniversary and presenting biographical essays on 12 eminent Victorian politicians. The Victorians, who forged British power in the 19th century, are declared bearers of high moral principles, while their stories act as a manifesto of modern British conservatives and Eurosceptics. The book’s relevance is determined not by the author’s approach to the role of Victorians, but by numerous allusions to actual circumstances, turning the reader’s mind to the historical choice faced by Great Britain in the context of Brexit.

Abstract:
This research focuses on implementation of conspicuous consumption on gender asindicated on Jax’s song entitled Victoria’s Secret. As a woman, there is an unwrittenstandard regarding beauty and perfection of what body shape should be. There ispassionate desire when seeing figure of beautiful woman with slender body and flawlessskin. This can be seen in many women with slim bodies as models from various beautybrands. Then how may conspicuous consumption be implemented through gender onJax's Victoria's Secret? In the song, Jax reveals how frustrating it is to live underpressure of what our bodies must look like to live as women. In fact, women in variousforms are exclusive standards emphasized in society. This article uses qualitative methodto explain the lyrics in the song Victoria's Secret through theory of conspicuousconsumption by Thorstein B. Veblen. In conclusion, this study examines whether thebeauty standards set by the brand in Jax's song Victoria's Secret create the idea thatthese clothes and products are expensive because the clothes are modelled by slim,smooth-skinned models. Keywords: Conspicuous Consumption; Gender; Jax; Thorstein B. Abstract:
What follows is a meditation on the idea of the average in Victorian England and its implications for the way in which Victorian intellectuals conceived of the individual and his, and less often, her, relation to society. It is not a social historian's attempt to synthesize an average Victorian on the basis of statistical data. Nor is it a proposal to nominate some actual person for the title of “average Victorian.” G.M. Young, who had Victorian England in his bones and at his fingertips, once wrote an essay titled “The Greatest Victorian,” by which he meant, as he put it, not Victorianorum maximus, but Victorianum maxime – not “the greatest of Victorians,” but “the most Victorian of the Victorians.” He awarded the title to Walter Bagehot (Victorian Essays 126). Bagehot was hardly the average Victorian, but the distinction Young made does go to the heart of an issue which, as I hope to show, concerned the Victorians: what was the relation between the average, mean, and normal – statistical notions – and the typical, characteristic, or quintessential – nonstatistical notions but still related to the average in ways at once obvious, and yet elusive.

Abstract:

Abstract:
<p> This dissertation discusses how Victorian writers, artists, and critics represent historical queens as shadows of Queen Victoria throughout her long reign (1837&ndash;1901). Focusing on Victorian representations of four queens&mdash;Catherine de Medici, Mary Stuart, Queen Elizabeth I, and Marie-Antoinette&mdash;this project seeks to establish a literary genealogy by showing how British writers drew upon historical interpretations of dead French and English queens to express psychological ambivalence, political anxiety about female monarchy, national, confessional difference, and complex sexual and erotic dimensions. Rather than approach these queens as historical persons, this dissertation concentrates on the literary, figural, and spectral qualities that translate unevenly across cultural, religious and historical lines. The dissertation uses interdisciplinary methods drawn from history, psychoanalysis, and feminism to examine how Victorian writers relate their representational strategies to novels, dramas, visual texts, and historiographies in which the queens are sources of sensation, fascination, English moral exceptionalism, and spectacle. The mix of canonical and non-canonical writers recasts the familiar images of these queens in a new light and brings unfamiliar and long forgotten writers into the discussion. In examining how these cultural texts work against the grain of more canonical texts, the dissertation shows how they have the potential to unsettle what it is thought is known about Victorian attitudes toward female monarchy. Finally, I argue that it matters that Queen Victoria is on the throne because she casts her shadow over these cultural texts while they are being produced and consumed.</p>

Abstract:
This thesis considers the reception of Heine in Victorian Britain and charts, through the medium of periodical articles in particular, the general development in British attitudes towards him, from the bewildered hostility of the 1830's through to the sentimental eulogising which is frequently found in articles written after his death. Unquestionably the most important articles written on Heine in nineteenth-century Britain were by George Eliot and Matthew Arnold. The aims and achievements of these authors, in writing on Heine, were very different, but both produced articles of enduring significance, and together they had a strong influence on the general improvement in Heine's fortunes in Britain during the second half of the nineteenth century. In turn, Heine was of importance not only for George Eliot and Matthew Arnold but also for some of the lesser figures of Victorian literature, notably Richard Monckton Milnes (Lord Houghton), Julian Fane and the Lyttons. All of these played some part in promoting Heine's reputation in Britain, and in this role Milnes enjoyed the help of Lucie Duff Gordon, one of the closest of Heine's English friends. Heine exerted a relatively small but definite influence on the creative works of both George Eliot and Matthew Arnold and on the poems of Milnes. In the case of Matthew Arnold, however, those critics who have considered Heine's influence in any depth have tended also to exaggerate it beyond reasonable bounds.

Abstract:
The writing style of a number of authors writing in English was empirically investigated for the purpose of detecting stylistic patterns in relation to advancing age. The aim was to identify the type of stylistic markers among lexical, syntactical, phonemic, entropic, character-based, and content ones that would be most able to discriminate between early, middle, and late works of the selected authors, and the best classification or prediction algorithm most suited for this task. Two pilot studies were initially conducted. The first one concentrated on Christina Georgina Rossetti and Edgar Allan Poe from whom personal letters and poetry were selected as the genres of study, along with a limited selection of variables. Results suggested that authors and genre vary inconsistently. The second pilot study was based on Shakespeare's plays using a wider selection of variables to assess their discriminating power in relation to a past study. It was observed that the selected variables were of satisfactory predictive power, hence judged suitable for the task. Subsequently, four experiments were conducted using the variables tested in the second pilot study and personal correspondence and poetry from two additional authors, Edna St Vincent Millay and William Butler Yeats. Stepwise multiple linear regression and regression trees were selected to deal with the first two prediction experiments, and ordinal logistic regression and artificial neural networks for two classification experiments. The first experiment revealed inconsistency in accuracy of prediction and total number of variables in the final models affected by differences in authorship and genre. The second experiment revealed inconsistencies for the same factors in terms of accuracy only. The third experiment showed total number of variables in the model and error in the final model to be affected in various degrees by authorship, genre, different variable types and order in which the variables had been calculated. The last experiment had all measurements affected by the four factors. Examination of whether differences in method within each task play an important part revealed significant influences of method, authorship, and genre for the prediction problems, whereas all factors including method and various interactions dominated in the classification problems. Given the current data and methods used, as well as the results obtained, generalizable conclusions for the wider author population have been avoided.

Abstract:
In 'A Critique of Modern Textual Criticism', Jerome J. McGann writes, '[A]n author's work possesses autonomy only when it remains an unheard melody'. For the published and successful writer in the nineteenth century, such autonomy was often unattainable. Publications such as The Pickwick Papers inspired an array of opportunistic successors, including stage plays, unauthorized sequels, jest books, song books, and shilling and penny imitations. Despite the proliferation, this strain of writing is rarely studied. This thesis recovers ephemeral, scurrilous texts, often anonymous or pseudonymous, and reads them in the context of their canonical sources. Retrieving bibliographical environments, it demonstrates how plagiaristic, parodic, and willfully unoriginal works impacted on the careers of three novelists: Charles Dickens, Edward Bulwer Lytton, and George Eliot. The thesis argues that formal distinctions among modes of Victorian writing - criticism, parody, and plagiarism - often blur. Further, it argues that our understanding of a particular novelist's work must be broadened to include sequels, spinoffs, and imitations: to know a particular author means to know the spurious and oftentimes bad (morally or aesthetically) works that the author inspired. The Spurious Victorians of the title form something of countercanon to the 'major' writers of the period. Thomas Peckett Prest, Rosina Bulwer Lytton, and Joseph Liggins, among many others, informed and influenced the literary history that has in turn denied them admission. William Makepeace Thackeray wrote, 'If only men of genius were to write, Lord help us! how many books would there be?' Of course, Victorian print culture found room for the genius and the subgenius, Boz as well as Bos. 'Spurious Victorians' recovers works that have been lost from view in order to better understand the process by which an individual authorial voice emerged amid an echo chamber of competing, imitative voices.

Abstract:
Critics from Virginia Woolf and David Cecil to Lyn Pykett and U. C. Knoepflmacher, among others, have been mesmerized by the eccentric but transcendent world of Brontë’s Wuthering Heights and the Gondal poems. Despite allusions and references to various modernist elements in Emily Brontë’s novel and poetry, there has not been extensive analysis of her work in connection to modern writers of the early twentieth century. I believe that a multi-themed analysis of such components is necessary to reassess her position in the canon and establish her as a precursor to the modernists. This dissertation examines Brontë’s deliberate invitation of, and simultaneous resistance to, interpretation—qualities that align her novel and verse more with Modernist literature than that of her contemporaries. I argue that Emily Brontë had an unusual and forward-looking focus that is revealed in her treatment of children, women, and the struggles of isolated beings in the dark, foreboding and often impressionistic world of Gondal and Wuthering Heights. Her elucidation of the gap between the mundane and the spiritual, the use of farcical elements against the sublime are also precursory to modernism. This dissertation assesses the various themes, angles and techniques that Brontë employs in presenting a strange atmosphere that is representative of a future world.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This project determined the rates of everyday anti-racism in Victoria, and how they vary across demographics and places. The team identified important pro-social, intercultural actions in everyday life and the everyday language of anti-racism among Victorians, including which anti-racism discourses work best, and how pro-social action can be best inspired through campaigns. This document contains our recommendations for policymakers.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Ben, Jehonathan, Amanuel Elias, Rachel Sharples, et al. Identifying and filling racism data gaps in Victoria: A stocktake review. Centre for Resilient and Inclusive Societies, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.56311/mqvn2911.

Abstract:
Despite Australia’s and Victoria’s stated commitment to promoting multiculturalism and equality, and to eradicating racism, our knowledge about the nature, extent and impact of different forms of racism on diverse populations is not as well-developed as it should be. Stakeholders addressing racism increasingly recognise that anti-racism initiatives must rely on robust scholarly evidence and high-quality data. Yet existing data have serious limitations. We report on a stocktake review of racism data collected nationally in Australia and with a specific focus on Victoria. We provide a comprehensive overview, summary and synthesis of quantitative data on racism, identify gaps in racism data collection, analysis and uses, and make recommendations on bridging those data gaps and informing anti-racism action and policy. Overall, the review examines data collected by 42 survey-based, quantitative studies, discussed in over 120 publications and study materials, and 13 ongoing data collection initiatives, platforms and projects. Based on the review, we identified eight gaps to racism data collection and analysis and to collection methodologies. We recommend four interconnected ways to fill racism data gaps for anti-racism researchers, organisations and policymakers: 1) Further analyse existing data to address critical questions about racism; 2) Collect and analyse additional data; 3) Enhance data availability and integration; and 4) Improve policies that relate to the collection, analysis, reporting and overall management of racism data.

Cárdenas, Mauricio, Cristina Fernández, Alejandro Rasteletti, and Diego Zamora. Inter-American Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003491.

Full text
