During the night of 12 May 2013, in Udaipur city (24°31'30"N, 73°40'38"E), we heard a harsh sound that could not be associated with any animal. The following morning we observed a pair of black ibis (Pseudibis papillosa) with one juvenile on top of an Azadirachta indica (Meliaceae) tree which was the tallest among all nearby trees. We heard the same type of call for the next 13 days. Black ibis made this call between 24:00 h and 01:30 h each night. This paper presents the problem of knowledge management related to software agents and agent systems (i.e. systems composed of communicating and cooperating software agents). The author presents basic theoretical issues, but the main focus is on the areas of application of software agents in multimedia communication - both existing and prospective applications. Particular attention has been paid to the applications of software agents for: supporting customer service processes through the Contact Centre system; supporting the distance learning system; creating virtual assistants in the form of

Background Telehealth has grown, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, improving access for those in remote or underserved areas. However, its implementation faces technological, practical, and interpersonal barriers. Objective The aim of this study was to identify and consolidate best practices for telehealth delivery, specifically for video call sessions, by synthesizing the insights of health care professionals across various disciplines. Methods We first identified 15 common telehealth barriers from a preceding scoping review. Subsequently, a modified Delphi method was used, involving 9

Current augmented reality (AR) systems are not designed to be used in our daily lives. Head-mounted see-through displays are too cumbersome and look too unusual for everyday life. The limited scalability of position-tracking devices limits the use of AR to very restricted environments. This paper proposes a different way to realize AR that can be used in an open environment by introducing the concept of ID awareness and a hand-held video see-through display. Unlike other AR systems that use head-mounted or head-up displays, our approach employs the combination of a palmtop-sized display and a

High quality recordings and transcriptions of speech are important to a wide variety of disciplines from linguistics and human language technology to biomedical screening, diagnosis and tracking. The wide availability of internet connections and powerful mobile devices offers low cost opportunities for collecting speech data at scale. But even in the era of open source software, numerous challenges remain. For example, video call applications such as Zoom have become widespread and allow for recording, but only provide lossy codecs with low frame rates, and often contain missing, repeated, or

In this paper, we propose a novel area-based algorithm for stereo correspondence estimation. The new dense correspondence estimation algorithm, which we call HACM (Hierarchical Adaptive Curve Matching), is suitable for stereo analysis of both static and dynamic scenes. The core of this method is the derivation of a pixel-based dense adaptive curve representation. For each pixel in the concerned 2-D images, the changes are characterized roughly in the local surface shape, the texture direction, and the luminance properties, all at a slight overhead cost. AbstractWe have developed a technique in which we use a borehole video camera and post-processing software to make a record of the optical brightness as a function of depth in polar firn. We call this method borehole optical stratigraphy. To measure firn compaction, we note the positions of optical features on the borehole wall detected by an initial ‘baseline’ log. We track the displacements of these features in subsequent logs. The result provides a measurement of the relative vertical motion and thus compaction of the firn over the survey period.
