Abstract:
There has been an increased demand on the mobile infrastructure, with enhancement in technology, content delivery and regulatory changes on access and competition rules. According to Ericsson the mobile data traffic is expected to grow with 45% from 2013 until 2019. These changes have to do with the fact that the service provider’s traditional pricing schemes are distinguishing. These changes enables new business models. The main two drivers behind the growth of mobile data traffic are (1) increased number of mobile data subscribers and (2) the average volume per subscriber has increased. At the same time the revenues are growing extremely slow in comparison with data usage, the revenues from the mobile broadband are limited to just a few cents off ARPU. One of the operator looking at different solutions in order to reduce the revenue gap is Telenor. Telenor wants to incorporate in its business model is videoconference with QoE taken into account. They have therefore developed a new service called Appear.in. Appear.in is challenging the existing video conferencing market. The main goal of the thesis is to investigate how business model for videoconference services changes when quality of experience is taken into account. Furthermore what will the effect be of having QoE in the BM? The primary steps that needs to be considered in order to achieve the goal is to identify the ecosystem of videoconference solutions and analyzing the business models that can be considered to deploy videoconference systems. Several workshops and survey was conducted. Moreover two different Business Model Canvas was created with and without QoE. A comparison was made and based on these comparisons one can conclude that there is not must that differs. When QoE is considered, three out of nine building blocks in the Business Model Canvas gets affected by the addition of QoE, value proposition, customer relationship and customer segment. These building blocks gets involved with customers in one way or the other. By including QoE in the Business Model Canvas showed a way to keep the customers satisfied. Furthermore companies would have the advantage of monitoring and tracking every movement allowing for quick decisions, guaranteeing video quality by preventing the development of videos problems. A number of investigations have been done in the area of Videoconferencing from a technology point of view, but one can find very little research related to Business model. General studies in the field of business model over QoE are being carried out. This thesis is a first step towards a wider and deeper investigation in the area of Videoconferencing with QoE from a Business model point of view.
Nya paradigm i både grossist- och detaljhandel håller på att bildas och accelereras av tekniska framsteg, content delivery, och regeländringar om tillgång och konkurrensregler. Dessutom så har efterfrågan på den mobila infrastrukturen ökat drastiskt. Enligt Ericsson förväntas mobildatatrafiken öka sin årliga tillväxttakt på cirka 45 % mellan 2013 och 2019. Det finns en ökad användning av det mobila bredbandet datatrafik samt antalet abonnenter. Samtidigt växer intäkterna extremt långsam i jämförelse med dataanvändning, intäkterna från mobilt bredband är begränsade till bara några cent av ARPU. Telenor överväger att i sin affärsmodell även lägga till videokonferens med QoE i åtanke. Telenor Digital har utvecklat en ny tjänst Appear.in. Genom att använda en ny standard för realtidskommunikation är Appear.in med och utmanar den befintliga videokonferensmarknaden. Huvudsyftet med avhandlingen är att undersöka hur affärsmodellen för videokonferens tjänster förändras när man tar hänsyn till QoE. Vidare vad kommer effekterna att bli med QoE i affärsmodellen? De primära steg som måste övervägas för att uppnå målet är att identifiera ekosystemet videokonferenslösningar och analysera affärsmodeller som kan anses implementera videokonferenssystem. Ett flertal workshops, kartläggningar och enkätundersökningar genomfördes. Två olika Business Model Canvas skapades en med och en utan QoE. En jämförelse gjordes och baserat på dessa jämförelser kan man dra slutsatsen att det inte finns någon stor skillnad mellan dessa båda modeller. När man tar hänsyn till QoE, så påverkas tre av de nio byggstenarna i Business Model Canvas, värde proposition, kundrelationer och kundsegment. Dessa byggstenar blir involverad med kunder på ett eller annat sätt.Genom att inkludera QoE i sin Business Model Canvas kan man hålla sina kunder nöjda. Dessutom kan företagen ha fördelen att övervaka och spåra varje rörelse, vilket möjliggör snabba beslut, vilket garanterar bildkvalitet genom att förhindra utvecklingen av video problem. En hel del forskning har gjorts på området videokonferens från en teknik synvinkel, men man hittar mycket lite forskning relaterad till affärsmodell. Allmänna studier inom affärsmodeller över QoE har genomförs. Denna avhandling är ett första steg mot en bredare och djupare forskning inom området videokonferens med QoE från en affärsmodell synvinkel.

Abstract:
The following diploma thesis is devoted to the desktop sharing description and its opportunities. Existing solutions and their advantages and disadvantages are described at the beginning of the text. The most extensive part deals with the design and the implementation of a new solution for the desktop sharing. The thesis aims at providing a possibility to observe desktop of one computer from another one. For achieving it, two appliactions (a server and a client) have been developed, and they are described in the text with utilization of UML (Unified Modeling Language) diagrams. The RFB (Remote Framebuffer) protocol has been chosen as the means for communication between the applications. A detailed description of this protocol is also included in the text. The developed solution is tested and compared with other similar applications in the final part of the work. After that, some areas needing slight improvements are named to achieve competitiveness of the developed solution with other applications of a similar type.

While inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) for the downlink and uplink of multi-cell systems (in general) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) networks (in particular) have been extensively studied, the study of the impact caused by inter-cell interference with video conferencing traffic has received less attention. The consideration of video conferencing traffic is essential for analyzing the overall performance analysis of inter-cell interference in LTE networks, and in particular for the evaluation of the video conferencing traffic. In LTE networks, the same frequencies can be used in several adjacent cells. This means that in practice every cell may have other cell nearby whose radio transmissions may interfere with the own signal. In this paper, we report a comprehensive analysis on the performance of video traffic considering the inter-cell interference impact in LTE network. The interference patterns are configured by using the OPNET simulator for a given set of parameters, such as cell configuration, user configurations, and traffic models. The interference pattern is used to study the performance of video conferencing traffic in LTE network for realistic deployments. We, present a detailed description of the way to model the network in OPNET platform considering the inter-cell interference. In order to use the suggested network model in OPNET platform three network scenarios are configured. They are fully overlapped, half overlapped and no frequency overlapping. These scenarios are configured in such a way to show how the video traffic is impacted when the network load increases. The thesis shows that the video conferencing traffic experiences more delay and loss when fully overlapped frequency is used in the adjacent cell on LTE network.

The advance of the internet and Web 2.0 technologies continue to drive a dramatic change in the way people access and share information through various channels of communication. In the education sector, several learning management systems have been integrated into teaching and learning activities. To increase more interactivities between teachers and learners, tools for synchronous video conferencing are implemented in universities to enable online education. Prior studies indicate that the adoption and use of the tools in higher education institutions have been substantially expanding, more particularly in developed countries. Therefore, understanding the state of integrating synchronous video conference tools to support teaching and learning activities is important for scholars and academicians as this innovative communication technology is proven to have a substantial impact on quality education and effective learning. In Rwanda, before COVID-19, research on the adoption and use of video conference systems is still scarce. The objective of this study was therefore twofold: (1) to understand the adoption and use of synchronous video conference technologies for teaching and learning purposes and (2) to propose a strategy for effective implementation and value addition of video conferencing tools (VCT) at University of Rwanda. A qualitative method was adopted and case study was used as a research strategy for this research. Meanwhile, the Social-Technical System theory was applied in this research for data collection, analysis and reporting of results. 17 responses from participants (teachers and eLearning Officers) were collected using an online internet-based survey questionnaire. Key findings indicate that the adoption and use of video conference systems was found to be at a lower level and the associated contributing inhibitors were identified and reported in this research. Based on the empirical findings and on the responses from participants, this study proposed a contextual strategy for effective integration of video conference systems at the case study institution. Overall, this study concluded that for an effective delivery of live lectures through webinars enabled by the web-based video conference tools, the 10 elements composing the proposed action-oriented strategy for integrating video conference systems should be taken into consideration by the case study institution. Practical and scientific contributions of this research are reported in this thesis and recommendations for further research in connection with the current one have been also put forward.

The main goal of this paper was to understand what is video conference, what technologies are used for interactive communications, to find out which companies are the biggest players in videoconferencing solutions market and what products they are offering, to realize what protocols and standards are used in videoconferencing, to introduce how videoconferencing systems from different vendors can communicate with each other. In the in the end of this research of opportunities of using video conferences you can find recommendations for video conference infrastructure for different users groups (home users, schools, distance learning class, distance learning center) which were distributed by their size and needs. Also you can find conclusions in the end of this research.

The aim of my diploma thesis is to introduce the problematic of today’s videoconference system and to compare the existing solutions. First chapters of my work are dedicated to a description of the theory of the conference system. Furthermore there is described the application Skype and application WebEx. These are the projects that are the nearest to the submission of this work. On the basis of the acquired information, the thesis is dealing with the creation of my own solution of video conference system. In the third chapter there are described all the used technologies needed for the realization of the project. The thesis is then dealing with the creation of own client on the platform Silverlight. This client is working on the components that play the multimedia content and on the service WCF RIA. After the part dedicated to a creation of the client, there are described the settings of services Windows Server 2008, on which the solution is realized. There are described the settings of services of web server, services of multimedia media, settings of SQL server and usage of program Windows Media Encoder. The last part is dedicated to a testing and plotting of the functionality of created video conference system. In the conclusion of the work there are evaluated the results of the work and described possible directions, where the development of the client of video conference could proceed.

Dagens informationssamhälle, erbjuder nya sätt att interagera, att etablera relationer och att bibehålla kontakten mellan människor.Teknologi och terapi blir ett sätt att upprätthålla en terapeutisk relation med hjälp av Skype som informationsteknologiskt hjälpmedel. Syftet med studien är att undersöka psykoterapeuters upplevelser avden terapeutiska relationen inom psykodynamisk psykoterapi via videokommunikation. Frågeställningarna fokuserar på terapeuternas användning av de psykodynamiska teorierna, beskrivning av den terapeutiska relationen samt hur den terapeutiska alliansen byggs vid videokommunikation. Studien hade en kvalitativ forskningsansats med en hermeneutisk metod. Sex terapeuter som bedrev terapi på Skype harintervjuats. Resultaten visar att terapeuterna upplevde att det fanns en distans i relationen som kunde användas positivt för att utreda något djupare i terapin. Terapierna blev mer ordrika då överföringaroch motöverföringar inte kunde identifieras lika lätt som vid ett fysiskt möte. Den terapeutiska alliansen upplevdes skörare på Skype. Slutsatser av studien var att bedriva en psykodynamisk psykoterapi på Skype behövde terapeuterna anpassa teorin till teknologin. Distansen irelationen användes som ett hjälpmedel för att terapin skulle utvecklas till en insiktsterapi men kunde även verka till att försvaren förstärktes.
Today's information society, is offering new ways to interact, to establish relationships and maintain contact between people.Technology and therapy is a way to maintain a therapeutic relationship with the help of Skype as an information technology tools. The purpose of the study is to examine psychotherapist’s experiences of the therapeutic relationship in psychodynamic psychotherapy via videocommunication. Research questions focuses on the psychotherapists' use of psychodynamic theories, the description of the therapeutic relationship and how the therapeutic alliance is being built in videocommunications. The study was a qualitative research approach with a hermeneutic method. Six therapists who pursued therapy via Skype were interviewed. The results show that therapists felt that there was a distance in the relationship which could be used positively to investigate deeper into the therapy. The therapies became wordier as transferense and countertrancferences could not be identified as easily as in a physical meeting. The therapeutic alliance felt more fragile on Skype. Discussions from the study shows in order to pursue a psychodynamic psychotherapy on Skype the therapists needed to adapt the theory to the technology. The distance in the relationship was used as a means of therapy to be developed into insight therapy but could also seem to strengthen the defenses.

Abstract:
Following the rapid development of mobile infrastructure and hand-held user devices like smartphones and tablets, the way that mobile networks have been utilized has changed accordingly. Users are no longer using their phones just to talk to and message each other, but have migrated most of their multimedia consumption to these devices. The increased network strain and reduced profit margins that new services bring to the table might lead to future decoupling between revenues and expenses in the network. In order to avoid this scenario various different strategies have been proposed and one of them is introduction of QoS/QoE related resource allocation techniques. This thesis looks at Interruption Prediction scheduler which tries to predict and prevent audio or video interruptions experienced during video conference call. In order to test the performance of these schedulers, MATLAB simulator reusing some of the functions from RUNE toolbox has been used. Results of the newly presented algorithms are compared with a QoE/QoS agnostic scheduler. Unfortunately results of these schedulers in the case of video conference are not as promising as they were in the case of some other types of services. The research done shows that these modifications of the scheduling algorithms do not help to increase the network performance in terms of observed KPIs (Total Time of Interruptions, Frequency of Interruptions and network throughput) in most of the described scenarios. However, there are some special scenarios when these schedulers show a certain potential.

Even before the spread of COVID-19 video conferencing software has seen a steady rise in use. Due to their convenient way of offering a way of seeing the other participants live while talking to them, it is quite easy to see why this kind of software became more and more used throughout the years. Now, during the pandemic, video conferencing software is more used than ever before, especially in learning environments. Nevertheless, studies show that student engagement is rather low with university students who take part in online learning. Throughout this paper, we venture into discovering the reasons behind this lack of engagement and how it can be improved from a User Experience Design standpoint. With findings resulted from several previous studies and identified student problems and needs from those papers we created a prototype to test which features and design elements affected student engagement.

Video conferencing has been a part of many communication platforms over the years. Over the last decades users have moved from dedicated telephony networks to the Internet, and recently to the Web. With the introduction of Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) it is now possible to make voice- and video calls simply by visiting a web page, without having to install any additional software. Services that enable multi-user conferences are quite common. However existing solutions such as the Multipoint Control Unit (MCU) inherently do not scale and can be a single point of failure, due to its centralized architecture. This can lead to high maintenance costs and poor service availability.To solve the scalability- and availability problems of video-conferencing services, a decentralized alternative to the MCU is proposed. A decentralized conferencing system uses the distributed resources of its users instead of relying on a central server. This means that the system can handle an increasing number of users without having to upgrade any server infrastructure. Additionally, failures are only partial and can happen regularly without affecting the rest of the system. This report presents the development of a protocol built on top of WebRTC that enables completely decentralized multi-user conferencing. It includes a distributed algorithm for voice-activated switching to reduce the computation and network resources used. A load-balancing technique based on media stream relays is used to distribute the resource requirements of the conference participants. The protocol is implemented as a Javascript library that can be included in a web application. A proof-of-concept web application is developed using the library and its performance is evaluated. The performance data is analyzed and the results are used to make incremental improvements to the protocol and implementation. Although not all features of the protocol are implemented, the tests show promising results. The application allows multiple users to participate in high-definition video conferences, with no server infrastructure aside from a Mini PC that hosts a web server and a WebRTC signaling server.
Videokonferenser har varit en del av många olika kommunikationsplattformar genom åren. Tekniken har yttats från dedikerade telefonnnät,, till Internet, och på senare tid till webben. I och med introduktionen av WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) är deti dag möjligt att enkelt deltaga i röst- och videosamtal genom att gå till en webbsida utan att behöva installera någon programvara annat an en webbläsare. De flesta existerande konferenstjänster är byggda med en centraliserad arkitektur, vilket kan leda till tekniska problem när antalet användare ökar eller när fel uppstår i systemens centrala servrar. Dessa problem kan leda till driftstopp och skada tjänstens tillgänglighet för användarna. Den här rapporten täcker utvecklingen av ett protokoll som tillsammans med WebRTC kan användas för att bygga en helt decentraliserad konferenstjänst. Målet är att tjänsten ska vara oberoende av centrala servrar, och på så vis lösa problemen med skalbarhet och tillgänglighet. Protokollet implementeras i en webbapplikation som testas och utvärderasöver flera iterationer för att hitta nya förbättringar. Testerna visar lovande resultat. Slutsatsen dras det är fullt möjligt att bygga en konferenstjänst på detta sätt, och möjligheter för framtida optimeringar och testfall föreslås.

Les applications en temps réel, telles que les systèmes de conférence multi-utilisateurs, ont des exigences de qualité de service élevées pour garantir une qualité d'expérience décente. De nos jours, la plupart de ces conférences sont effectuées sur des appareils sans fil. Ainsi, les appareils mobiles hétérogènes et la dynamique du réseau doivent être correctement gérés pour fournir une bonne qualité d’expérience. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons deux algorithmes pour construire et gérer des sessions de conférence basées sur un réseau défini par logiciel qui utilise à la fois la distribution multicast et l’adaptation de flux. Le premier algorithme configure la conférence téléphonique en créant des arborescences de multidiffusion pour chaque participant. Ensuite, il place de manière optimale les emplacements et les règles d’adaptation des flux sur le réseau afin de minimiser la consommation de bande passante. Nous avons créé deux versions de cet algorithme: le premier, basé sur les arborescences les plus courtes, minimise la latence, tandis que le second, basé sur les arborescences, minimise la consommation de bande passante. Le deuxième algorithme adapte les arborescences de multidiffusion en fonction des modifications du réseau qui se produisent pendant un appel. Il ne recalcule pas les arbres, mais ne déplace que les emplacements et les règles d’adaptation des flux. Cela nécessite un calcul très faible au niveau du contrôleur, ce qui rend notre proposition rapide et hautement réactive. Des résultats de simulation étendus confirment l'efficacité de notre solution en termes de temps de traitement et d'économies de bande passante par rapport aux systèmes de conférence existants basés sur une unité de contrôle multipoint et une multidiffusion de couche d'application
Real-time applications, such as Multi-party conferencing systems, have strong Quality of Service requirements for ensuring a decent Quality of Experience. Nowadays, most of these conferences are performed on wireless devices. Thus, heterogeneous mobile devices and network dynamics must be properly managed to provide a good quality of experience. In this thesis, we propose two algorithms for building and maintaining conference sessions based on Software-Defined Network that uses both multicast distribution and streams adaptation. The first algorithm set up the conference call by building multicast trees for each participant. Then, it optimally places the stream adaptation locations and rules inside the network in order to minimize the bandwidth consumption. We have created two versions of this algorithm: the first one, based on the shortest path trees is minimizing the latency, while the second one, based on spanning trees is minimizing the bandwidth consumption. The second algorithm adapts the multicast trees according to the network changes occurring during a call. It does not recompute the trees, but only relocates the locations and rules of stream adaptation. It requires very low computation at the controller, thus making our proposal fast and highly reactive. Extensive simulation results confirm the efficiency of our solution in terms of processing time and bandwidth savings compared to existing conferencing systems based on a Multipoint Control Unit and Application Layer Multicast

At the end, paper focuses on several ways of development of mentioned application.

Das Internationale Hochschulinstitut Zittau (IHI Zittau) verfügt über langjährige Erfahrungen im Bereich der elektronisch- unterstützten Lehre, insbesondere beim Einsatz von Videokonferenzen und korrelierenden multimedialen Applikationen. Darüber hinaus ist eine weitgehende Integration von hochschulinternen Verwaltungs- und Gremienprozessen in die Lernplattform OPAL sowie die Nutzung der Lernplattform für die hochschulübergreifende Projektarbeit mit externen Partnern gelungen. Diese Erfahrungen gilt es beim Aufbau eines virtuellen Doktorandenstudiums zu nutzen. Auf der dritten Stufe des Bologna-Prozesses wurde am Internationalen Hochschulinstitut Zittau ein Doktorandenstudium eingerichtet. Das Studium steht auch Fachhochschulstudenten offen, die kooperativ am IHI Zittau promovieren möchten. Das IHI Zittau kooperiert im Rahmen des Doktorandenstudiums mit der Hochschule Zittau-Görlitz (FH) sowie den Fachhochschulen Münster, Nordhausen und Emden, wodurch das Doktorandenstudium über die sächsischen Landesgrenzen hinaus einen Kompetenzgewinn erzielen kann. An diesem Punkt setzt das innovative Konzept des virtuellen Doktorandenstudiums an, welches auf Kolloquien, Videokonferenz-basierte Besprechungen, den Einsatz eines Application Sharing-Tools (Net Viewer) sowie das Dokumenten- und Leistungsnachweis-Management, gestützt auf das Lernmanagementsystem OPAL und dessen Arbeitsgruppenstrukturen, aufbaut. Das Ziel besteht in der Realisierung spezifischer Studienangebote auf Promotionsniveau mit dem Fokus auf fachbezogene Kompetenz-Multiplikation mit Hilfe der Einbindung hochschulpartnerschaftlicher Ressourcen und deren Integration in das virtuelle Studienangebot. Des Weiteren soll die gesamte Studienablaufplanung vom Einschreibeprozedere über die Verwaltungs- und Gremienarbeit bis hin zu den Studienangeboten konsistent auf dem Lernmanagementsystem OPAL basieren. Zur Sicherung der Nachhaltigkeit erfolgt eine wissenschaftliche Aufarbeitung der gesammelten Erfahrungen in Form eines Leitfadens, welcher dem Transfer an andere Hochschulen gerecht werden soll.

The present study proposes an understanding of the interpersonal relationships between subjects involved in the construction and execution of the pedagogic Project of Distance Learning under an ethno methodological and multi-referential perspective of education.We propose identifying how relationships are established in Distance Learning, which its organizational agents are and how they interact in the organization of the work, since Distance Learning requires an array of professionals with different kinds of knowledge so as to achieve its goals. We used as reference Distance Learning Courses at UNESP and through the use of observation, reports, questionnaires and interviews, we intend to identify how subjects see and understand themselves in the process and how they understand and recognize other subjects in the development of activities of such course. Using as reference the steps taken in the elaboration and realization of a video-conference, we aim at recognizing the communication process within the group of technicians, managers, professors and learners in the organization, as well as analyzing connections and ruptures, the wide-range actions and the importance of its functions on a daily basis.(AU)
O presente trabalho propõe um entendimento sobre as relações interpessoais entre os sujeitos envolvidos na construção e execução do projeto pedagógico de Educação na modalidade a distância sob uma perspectiva etnometodológica e multirreferencial de educação. Propomos identificar como as relações se estabelecem no cotidiano da EAD, quais são seus agentes organizacionais e como estes se interagem na estruturação do trabalho, uma vez que a EAD exige uma complexidade de profissionais de diferentes saberes para a concretização de seus objetivos. Tomando como referência os cursos de educação a distância da UMESP, pretendemos, por meio de observação, relatórios, aplicação de questionários e entrevistas, identificar como cada agente se vê e se percebe no processo, e de que forma entende e reconhece o outro no desenvolvimento das atividades do referido curso. The development of audiovisual techniques throughout the twentieth century, once reservedfor arts and gradually extended to other fields of activity, has approached the legal systembelatedly.More specifically, the criminal justice system has been using these innovations over the pastfifteen years. Dans la deuxième approche, les tâches de traitement vidéo sont directement traitées dans les clients. La performance est ensuite limitée par les caractéristiques du périphérique. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons une troisième approche alternative. Nous proposons un système qui distribue des tâches de traitement vidéo en temps réel sur les ressources internes de l'entreprise. Une méthode dédiée de prise de décision basée sur les multi-attributs est conçue pour tenir compte de la variété des attributs qui influent sur la qualité de l'expérience. Des algorithmes de distribution et de redistribution de tâches sont élaborés. Nous testons ensuite l'approche proposée au moyen de la simulation afin d'étudier l'impact des principaux paramètres critiques. L'approche proposée pose une question sur laquelle un PC peut être utilisé comme plate-forme pour le serveur multimédia. Nous estimons une qualité perçue des flux vidéo afin d'étudier l'influence de la charge CPU. Nous avons également élaboré des algorithmes, combinant l'approche Cloud / Fog avec différents types de serveurs multimédia. Le résultat fournit une solution de conférence optimisée en termes de coût tant pour le fournisseur que pour le consommateur, ainsi que pour l'expérience de l'utilisateur final. En combinant les algorithmes élaborés et l'architecture avec les résultats de l'expérimentation, nous concluons que la solution proposée peut être utilisée comme une nouvelle approche de la problématique de la vidéoconférence
There exist two classical and well-understood approaches to video processing tasks for videoconferencing. The first one is using a centralized Multipoint Control Unit (MCU). In the second approach, the video processing tasks are directly handled in endpoints. Performance is then restricted by device characteristics, especially in the case of mobile devices. In this thesis, we propose a third alternative approach. We propose a system, which distributes real-time video processing tasks on enterprise desktop grid. A dedicated Multi Attribute Decision Making method is designed in order to take into account the variety of attributes impacting Quality of Experience. A number of task distribution and redistribution algorithms are elaborated. We then test the proposed approach by means of simulation in order to study the impact of the main critical parameters. The proposed approach arises a question to which extent a PC can be used as a platform for media server and how CPU load affects the quality of provided video conference. We estimate a perceived quality of video streams in order to investigate CPU load influence. Also we elaborated algorithms, combining Cloud/Fog approach with different types of media servers, the result provides an optimized conferencing solution in the terms of cost for both provider and consumer as well as in terms of end user experience. Bakgrund: Vi blir idag allt äldre. Ett ökande antal äldre med komplexa vårdbehov kräver en samordnad vård utifrån ett helhetsperspektiv med patienten som person i centrum. En samordnad vårdplanering genomförs på sjukhuset före utskrivning för att samordna hälso- och sjukvård från sjukhus, primärvård och kommunal vård. Dessa vårdplaneringar utförs idag ofta via videomöte. För att upprätthålla en personcentrerad vård och främja en trygg och säker hemgång, behöver vårdplaneringen genomföras på ett sådant sätt att den äldre upplever delaktighet och därmed kan påverka beslut kring sin egen vård och hälsa. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att beskriva samordnad vårdplanering via videomöte ur den äldre personens och närståendes perspektiv. Metod: En induktiv kvalitativ forskningsansats användes genom åtta personliga ostrukturerade intervjuer. Ett strategiskt urval gjordes som resulterade i fyra äldre personer, Md=79 år, (70-83), samt fyra närstående, Md=54 år, (45-58). Inklusionskriterier var erfarenhet av vårdplanering via videomöte och för de äldre en ålder på minst 70 år. Materialet analyserades med kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Resultat: Den äldre personens och närståendes upplevelse av vårdplanering via videomöte kan beskrivas av temat att befinna sig i ett utanförskap. Detta baseras på tre kategorier utifrån upplevelse av opersonlighet, meningslöshet samt bristande delaktighet. Otillräcklig förberedelse eller information kan skapa en känsla av utanförskap som riskerar hindra möjligheten till delaktighet, inflytande och medbestämmande i vården. Slutsats: Samordnad vårdplanering via videomöte kan möjligen bli en tillfredsställande mötesform även för äldre. Flera utmaningar och svårigheter måste dock hanteras när det gäller möjlighet till delaktighet och medbestämmande för den äldre personen och närstående i vårdplanering via videomöte. Utan tidigare erfarenhet av videomöten kan kommunikation via en skärm vara en obekant upplevelse. Ett välplanerat videomöte med förberedd och insatt vårdpersonal samt en informerad och trygg patient och närstående är förutsättningar som behöver uppfyllas.
Background: We are becoming older than ever before. A growing number of elderly patients with complex caring needs require coordinated care from a holistic perspective with the patient as a person at the center. A coordinated care planning is conducted in the hospital before discharge in order to coordinate the health care needed from hospital, primary care services and municipal care. Today, these care planning's are often performed via video conference. In order to maintain a person-centered care and provide a safe and secure return to home, care planning need to be carried out in such a way that the elderly person may experience patient participation and thus can influence decisions on their own care and health. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe coordinated care planning via video conference from the elderly person's and next of kin's perspective. Method: An inductive qualitative research approach was used through eight personal unstructured interviews. A purposive sampling was conducted which resulted in a sample of four elderly persons, Md=79 years, (70-83) and four next of kin, Md=54 years, (45-58). Inclusion criteria were experience of care planning via video conference and for the elderly an age of at least 70 years. The data was analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Result: The older person's and the next of kin's experience of care planning via video conference can be described by the theme of being in an alienation. This is derived from three categories based on experience of impersonality, futility and a lack of participation. Insufficient preparation or information may create a feeling of alienation that can hinder the possibility of patient participation, influence and codetermination in the care. Conclusion: Coordinated care planning via video conference may become an adequate meeting form even for the elderly. However, several challenges and difficulties need to be addressed concerning patient participation and codetermination in care planning via video conference. Without previous experience of video conferencing, communicating via a screen can be a strange experience for the elderly person. A well-planned video conference with prepared and trained healthcare personnel as well as an informed and safe patient and next of kin are prerequisites that need to be fulfilled.

Ces systèmes ont le potentiel d'améliorer considérablement l'efficacité et d'offrir de nouvelles fonctionnalités, mais ils présentent leurs propres défis, nécessitant de nouvelles approches et solutions. Cette thèse est dédiée à l'étude des systèmes SFU, avec pour objectif de les rendre plus efficaces. Nous commençons par le problème de l'efficacité et proposons un algorithme de sélection de point final basé sur l'activité de la parole. Ensuite, nous évaluons l'utilisation de la diffusion simultanée pour réduire davantage la bande passante requise. Ensuite, nous proposons une approche de serveur distribué dans le but d'améliorer la qualité de connexion des utilisateurs. Nous présentons une analyse, une implémentation et une expérience randomisée mesurant la qualité de la connexion. Enfin, nous proposons une extension pour les conférences chiffrées de bout en bout avec les SFU
Recent developments in video communication led to the introduction of Selective Forwarding Units. These systems have the potential to significantly improve efficiency and offer new functionality, but they present challenges of their own, requiring new approaches and solutions. This thesis is dedicated to the study of SFU systems, with a focus on making them more efficient. We begin with the problem of efficiency and propose an algorithm for endpoint selection based on speech activity. Then we evaluate the use of simulcast for further lower the required bandwidth. Next, we propose a distributed server approach with the goals of improving user connection quality. We present an analysis, implementation, and a randomized experiment measuring connection quality. Finally we propose an extension for end-to-end encrypted conferences with SFUs

Bakgrund: Vi blir allt äldre och fler bor kvar i hemmet med behov av vård- och omsorgsinsatser. Då dessa personer av någon anledning vårdats på sjukhus och skall återgå till hemmet görs en vård- och omsorgsplanering för att patienten ska kunna lämna slutenvården på ett tryggt sätt. Med ett växande antal äldre med behov av insatser i hemmet kommer även behovet av samordnad vård- och omsorgsplanering på sjukhus att öka. En sådan planering görs allt mer via videokonferens idag. Denna form av digitala möten innebär nya utmaningar för sjuksköterskan i att skapa och upprätthålla en ömsesidighet. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att undersöka förutsättningar för vård- och omsorgsplanering via videokonferens och hur detta påverkar möjligheten för vårdpersonalen att kunna förstå och tolka patientens situation utifrån ett helhetsperspektiv och således utföra ett personcentrerat möte på distans. Metod: En kvalitativ forskningsansats användes för att erhålla en förståelse av sjuksköterskors erfarenhet av vård- och omsorgsplanering via videokonferens. Metoden bestod av en inledande explorativ litteraturstudie samt enskilda personliga semistrukturerade intervjuer. Urvalet bestod av totalt sju sjuksköterskor inom slutenvård, primärvård och kommunal hemsjukvård. Analysen av intervjumaterialet utfördes med en induktiv ansats inspirerad av fenomenologi. Resultat: Resultatet visar att kommunikationen påverkas och att möten via videoteknik förlorar närhet och således en del av den mänskliga kontakten. Detta kan bidra till sämre möjlighet att se varandra som personer men kan kompenseras av ett personcentrerat förhållningssätt. Tekniken kan fungera som ett medel för mänsklig interaktion dock ej ersättning för det. Huvudtemana som framkommer i resultatet är förlust av närhet kompenseras av flera vinster med tillhörande teman skärmen som barriär och vinster för vårdpersonal, patient och anhöriga samt teknik som medel för mänsklig interaktion med tillhörande teman ytterst beroende av personerna i mötet och hög kvalitet på utrustning och prestanda. Slutsats: Samordnad vård- och omsorgsplanering via videokonferens innebär utmaningar i att skapa närvaro och ett genuint intresse som kompenserar för den fysiska närhet som förloras. Denna mötesform kan göra det svårare se varandra som personer men detta hinder kan kompenseras av ett personcentrerat förhållningssätt. Sjuksköterskan behöver vara väl förtrogen med personcentrerad vård för att kunna möta patienten trots den barriär som skärmen kan utgöra. Teknik är ett medel, inte ett självändamål i sig. Rätt nyttjad kan informations- och kommunikationsteknologi användas med stora tidsvinster för att få tillgång till varandra oavsett geografisk plats och kan bidra till en mänsklig interaktion men inte ersätta den.
Background: We are becoming older and more people remain in their home with the need for care. When these persons for some reason have been hospitalized and are to return to their homes, care planning is performed in order for the person to be able to leave the ward in a safe manner. With an increasing number of elderly persons in need of care interventions in their home, the need for coordinated care planning in hospitals will also increase. Such planning is today being performed increasingly often via video conferencing. This form of digital encounters poses new challenges for the nurse in creating and maintaining a mutuality. Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the conditions for coordinated care planning via video conferencing and how this affects the ability of health care professionals to understand and interpret the patient’s situation from a holistic perspective, thus performing a person-centered meeting at a distance. Method: A qualitative research approach was used to gain an understanding of nurses' experience of coordinated care planning via video conferencing. The method consisted of an initial exploratory literature study and individual personal semistructured interviews. The sample consisted of a total of seven nurses in primary care, primary care and municipal home nursing. The analysis of the interview material was conducted with an inductive approach inspired by phenomenology. Result: The result shows that the communication is affected and that meetings via video technology lose proximity and thus a part of the human contact. This can disrupt the possibility of seeing each other as persons but can be compensated by a person-centered approach. The technology can act as a means of human interaction, but not as a compensation for it. The main themes found in the result are loss of proximity compensated by multiple gains with associated themes screen as a barrier and benefits for healthcare professionals, patients and relatives as well as technology as means of human interaction with associated themes decidedly dependent on the people in the meeting and high quality in equipment and performance. Conclusion: Coordinated care planning via video conferencing involves challenges in conveying presence and genuine interest that compensates for the loss of physical presence. This form of meeting can make it more difficult to see each other as persons, however this obstacle can be compensated by a person-centered approach. The nurse needs to be well acquainted with person-centered care in order to meet the patient despite the barrier that the screen may create. Technology is a means, not an end in itself. Proper use of information and communication technology can be used with great time gains to access each other regardless of geographical location and can contribute to human interaction but not replace it.

Resumo: Este trabalho descreve o desenvolvimento de um sistema de videoconferência para redes de alto desempenho, que pode ser integrado em sistemas de educação a distância os quais necessitam desta funcionalidade. O sistema é portável, não proprietário e distribuído e permite a interação entre professor e estudante (em um ambiente de educação a distância) através de transmissões em áudio e vídeo, e através de notificações por eventos. Para a implementação, foram utilizadas a arquitetura CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) e a linguagem Java. Dois serviços CORBA foram empregados: AIV Streams para o transporte da mídia contínua e o Serviço de Eventos para a notificação de eventos. The system is designed to be portable, open, and distributed, allowing the integration among teacher and students (in a distance Jearning environment) through live audio and video, and event notifications. Under pandemin COVID-19 har hälsovården tvingats till hastiga anpassningar i form av användning av vård via videolänk för kontinuitet, vilket berör även psykoterapi. Trots omfattande evidens för effektiviteten av terapi via videolänk finns fortfarande myter hos kliniker att den terapeutiska alliansen äventyras i det digitala forumet, vilket kan försvåra implementeringen. Studiens syfte var att utforska psykoterapeuters upplevelser av psykoterapi via videolänk, med särskilt fokus på den terapeutiska alliansen (TA). Genom semi-strukturerade intervjuer undersöktes psykoterapeuters föreställningar, anpassningar samt erfarenheter av denna omställning. Data analyserades utifrån kvalitativ innehållsanalys och resulterade i tre kategorier; Kommunikation, Den bärande relationen samt KBT-interventionerna. Huvudresultatet indikerar att klinikerna har behövt anpassa behandlingen kontextuellt, kommunikativt samt innehållsmässigt för att främja alliansen, och att TA går att utveckla över videolänk. Detta sammanfaller med tidigare internationella studiers resultat.  Utvecklingsområden som framkommit är aspekter självexponering som nytt fenomen och förändringar i maktstrukturen inom terapin. Omställningen har gått över förväntan positivt och delvis förändrat respondenternas inställning till videolänkterapi. Inom begränsningarna för denna studie beskrivs konsekvenserna och framtida forskningsriktningar.
During the pandemic COVID-19 the health care has suddenly been forced to adjust their work and start using video conference to keep the continuity, which also impacts psychotherapy. Despite extensive evidence of the efficiency of video conference psychotherapy there are still myths among clinicians that the therapeutic alliance can be endangered by the digital format, which can complicate the implementations. The aim of this study is to examine the psychotherapists' experiences of psychotherapy via video conference, with particular focus on the therapeutic alliance (TA). Through semi-structured interviews we examined the psychotherapists conceptions, adaptations and the experiences of this readjustment. Data were analyzed based on qualitative content analysis; Communication, The solid relation and the CBT-interventions. The main results indicated that the clinicians needed to adapt the treatment contextually, communicatively and in terms of content to frame TA, and that TA can be developed via video conference. This coincides with previous international research. Areas of development is the new phenomenon self-exposure and transformation/change of equalization of power.  The conversion has positively exceeded the expectations and has partly changed the respondents attitudes to therapy via video conference. Within the limitations of this study, implications and further directions for research are described.

Este trabalho descreve a filosofia e implementação de mecanismos de adaptação da qualidade de serviço para ambientes melhor-esforço sobre a aplicação de vídeo-conferência VIC. Os mecanismos aqui implementados atuam sobre o Sistema Multimídia Distribuído como um todo, considerando duas situações: a sobrecarga de processador da máquina local que gera o fluxo de dados, e a sobrecarga de rede no qual os dados gerados trafegam. A atuação do mecanismo local (sobre o processador) é norteada por uma função de grau de qualidade, que considera a qualidade como um todo, abrangendo todos os parâmetros da aplicação percebidos pelo usuário (freqüência de quadros e fidelidade da imagem). A atuação do mecanismo global (sobre a rede) usa duas filosofias diferentes para adaptação: uma usando a função grau de qualidade e ``sockets'', e a outra usando os pacotes de Relatório de Receptor do Protocolo de Controle Tempo-Real (RTCP). Para essas diversas situações são apresentados resultados como também são feitas análises de desempenho.

Research in Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) has identified a gap - the, so called, social-technical gap - between the wide range of human social interactions that CSCW ideally should support and what current technology actually does support. At the same time recent work in cognitive science and CSCW has begun to elucidate the multifarious roles that the body plays in cognitive processes as well as many forms of social interaction, e.g. gestures, pointing, eye-contact and bodily mimicry. The aim of this dissertation has been to analyse to what degree different aspects of embodied social interaction are supported by different types of synchronous, remote location CSCW technology, and to develop recommendations for future development concerning aspects of embodiment. For this purpose, a number of crucial aspects of embodied social interaction have been identified and about twenty CSCW systems - both research prototypes and commercial systems - have been analysed with respects to how well they support these different aspects. The analysis shows that most CSCW systems only support a very limited range of aspects of embodied social interaction.

In this paper we analyze development problems and tendencies of virtual education. Separately it’s emphasized the situation with distance education (DE) in Lithuania. The structure, principles and facilities of LieDM network are briefly described. In the first part of the paper main attention is paid to the technological aspect. Examples of different methodologies are overviewed as well as existing norms and standards. In detail we overview the requirements of recorded video presentations and solutions using different media formats and software products. In the second part the specific situation of DE application in Klaipeda University is analyzed. We make the requirement specification and the description of application area. Finally we make a design of the virtual learning management system using procedures of system engineering.

En kvalitativ metod har tillämpats och datainsamlingen har gjorts via semistrukturerade intervjuer. I studien deltog sju respondenter varav fem var kvinnor och två var män. Studiens insamlade material har analyserats utifrån Braun och Clarkes (2006) Tematiska analys. Den Tematiska analysen genererade tre teman: Första temat: Osäkerheten i vad som sker, och vad man inte ser eller hör, vilket beskriver respondenternas upplevelse av hinder i kommunikationen via det digitala mötet. Andra temat: Begränsat handlingsutrymme,beskriver respondenternas känsla av att det digitala formatet minskar deras verktygslåda som behandlare. Det tredje temat: Avsaknad av fysisk närhet, beskriver hur respondenterna saknar den fysiska närheten i det digitala formatet men upplever det digitala formatet vara ett gott komplement till det fysiska rummet, dock ingen fullgod ersättning.
The purpose of the study was to investigate therapists' experience of therapeutic alliance in therapy through digital format. A qualitative method has been applied and data collection has been done through semi-structured interviews. The study involved seven participants, five of whom were women and two were men. The study's collected material has been analyzed based on Braun and Clarke's (2006) Thematic analysis. The Thematic Analysis generated three themes: The first theme: The uncertainty in what happens, and what one does not see or hear, which describes the participants' experience of obstacles in communication through the digital meeting. Second theme: Limited room for maneuver, describes the participants' feeling that the digital format reduces their toolbox as a therapist. The last theme: Lack of physical proximity, describes how the participants lack the physical proximity in the digital format but experience the digital format as a good complement to the physical space, however, no adequate replacement.

Videoconferencing system is based on technology of transmitting video and audio streams synchronously at different sites together for a meeting and is widely used in wired broadband network. With the great development of wireless mobile network (such as 3G, WiMAX, etc), mobile video conference would be increased in demand, therefore, how to achieve a world of heterogeneous networks with ubiquitous video conference has become a new trend in videoconferencing technology research and development. The current videoconferencing architecture is divided into client/server and peer-to-peer. In either architecture, the technologies would be used including coder and decoder of video and audio, network streaming, NAT traversal, and etc. In order to smoothly play video and audio streams, hardware capabilities also have to be considered in deep. The purpose of this plan is to develop a client / server architecture of videoconferencing technology to smoothly transmit and receive data with Google VP8 codec. By adding on adaptive profile (resolution, frame rate) technology in Google VP8 and using additional control channel to detect the network video transmission capabilities, videoconferencing system can be supported in cross-platform, and also can be transferred between different devices, which means without terminating the video conference, same video frames will be shifted from a device to another.

The progress technology improves the quality of the Internet service and also the core technology repeatedly. There is a lot of multimedia information transmitted on the network in human life, for example the video conference, or the video on demand. All these are accepted by human now. At the moment of enjoying these, we should discuss the related technology. Include of how to effectively compress the original multimedia data to lowly, and avoid delaying or failing in the transmission. Because theories of the video compression at the moment were not focus on the P2P Network, we want to find a new method to do it. In this paper, we used the basic VQ technology to produce the video stream and shared it on the P2P network. VQ has been found to be an efficient method for still image coding, and the important impact reason of the VQ image quality is the size of a codebook. So we would use the different feature of the image to train 256 kinds of codebook to do VQ encoder/decoder process. Then we used the Neural Network to simulate the VQ encoder to speed up the process. Finally, we share the codebook information, the feature of the image, and the result of the Neural Network encoder on the P2P network. Because the benefit of the VQ and P2P network, we will have high performance video conference service.

This thesis proposes a high quality virtual view synthesis system with two video streams from two cameras. Cameras were located in left and right sides of the monitor. To adapt to most environments (background), this thesis also proposes a background subtraction method. Artifacts and occlusion problems are also considered.

Chatting is a good social activity for senior people to kill time and interact with each other. It also can enhance enjoyment of life, slow down Amnesia, and increase friendly relationship among people. But, face-to-face chatting is less posssible for present society. Therefore, a free and convenient way of chatting has to be designed for the senior people. This thesis proposes the internet video communication software as the solution. The software allows senior citizens to easily chat with his friends through internet. As long as the users can access to the internet, they will be able to chat with their friends and do not have to worry about communication fees. The software is based on Linphone, an open-source SIP-based internet video phone communication software. A graphical user interface(GUI) is dedicately designed for the senior people. The users only need to click on the friend’s icon to talk to their friends with video. And also, a handwriting recognition utitlity is included, in case of chinese text entry being required.

HTML5 (HyperText Markup Language Version 5) was proposed to facilitate the development of rich Internet applications (RIAs). RIA developers can easily develop their applications without the inconsistence issues among web browsers. WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) API was also developed to support video communication, audio conversation, and Peer-to-Peer file transfer in a web environment without the need of any plugin. The WebRTC specification has been submitted to W3C as a W3C Recommendation. This thesis study aims to develop cross-platform video conference applications based on HTML5 for multi-users. In this thesis, several APIs of HTML5 are adopted: (1) WebSocket is used to provide efficient communications between clients and the web server, for example, on-line user maintenance, establishment of video conferencing, and synchronization and interactions among clients. (2) Canvas and SVG are used to generate graphical pictures dynamically in an interactive bulletin board. (3) WebRTC is adopted to provide real-time video/audio communication. There are two major advantages in the proposed HTML5-based video conferencing application. First, no additional software or plugin is required. Only necessary is the web browser with HTML5 support, which will be available in almost all computers. In addition, more users get connected to the Internet via mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets. As a consequence, the proposed application can be easily used in mobile devices without the need of developing additional APPs for iOS or Android platforms. Merely via a web browser, users can enjoy video conferencing, text-based chats, and graphical bulletin board. These features can be further improved and extended as a part of a platform-neutral distance learning platform available anywhere and anytime.

Network communication techniques have been developed rapidly in recent years.Computer network becomes more and more popular and gradually turns into an essential part of human life. However, the convenience and the popularization of network accompany with latent threats. The network environment is open to every user and the information transmitted over network can be obtained without difficulty. For this reason, communication on network is insecure if there are not any security mechanisms.   With the mature development of data communication, it is a trend to integrate telecommunication and computer network. Voice communication over Internet is a new technology which many companies take great interest in. However, the voice signals are unprotected while transmission no matter over traditional telephone networks of computer networks. A secure voice system is necessary for achieving secure conversations.   This thesis proposes a secure voice communication system which supports transmission over PSTN and Internet. The proposed system applies cryptographic techniques to achieve private communication so that the video and voice signals are encrypted in the transmission channels. The key distribution protocol of the proposed system guarantees mutual identity authentication, key confirmation, and information security that other video conferencing communication systems do not provide. We also implement the system as software so that it is more flexible and practical for user, reduce the operations of encryption.

No caso de video conferência, há bastantes alternativas para se estabelecer uma chamada entre entre várias pessoas, seja por aplicações nativas ou pelo web browser. Neste momento, algumas dessas aplicações suportam video chamadas em 360º, no entantom maior parte delas são caras demais. O objectivo deste projecto é desenvolver um sistema de video conferência que suporte chamadas em 360º e que consiga detectar as caras das pessoas numa sala. Isto seria um passo em direção à melhoria da comunicação entre diferentes utilizadores numa chamada, especialmente num ambiente de empresa onde reuniões acontecem todos os dias. Este relatório detalha a implementação e integração de suporte a video 360º num sistema de video conferência WebRTC de propriedade da WIT Software S.A.. Como ponto de partida, vários sistemas de video conferência foram analisados com o fim de perceber o que já existe neste momento e o que pode ser ainda melhorado. Alguns destes sistemas, como os da Polycom, oferecem uma grande variedade de funcionalidades que melhoram a experiência de utilizador e alguns, como ajustamento de luz, estão fora do âmbito deste trabalho. Uma análise das diferentes câmaras possíveis a utilizar é apresentada e a arquitectura do sistema de video conferência existente é detalhada. A integração com o Kurento Media Server é também uma parte vital do projecto sendo que é onde o módulo de detecção facial se encontra. O resultado do desenvolvimento do projecto é uma aplicação web de video conferência que suporta video em 360º e consegue detectar caras de várias pessoas.
With the ever evolving technology in today's world, new and exciting applications show up every day. In the case of video conferencing, there are several alternatives to have a video call with people, be it via native applications or web browser. Currently, some of these applications even support 360º video calls, though, most of them are too expensive. The goal of this project is to develop a video conference system that supports 360º video calls and is able to detect the faces of people within a room. This would be step towards improving the communication between different users in a call, especially in a company environment where meetings take place every day. This report details the implementation and integration of 360º video support in a WebRTC video conference software provided by Wit Software S.A.. As a starting point, several conferencing platforms were analyzed in order to understand what already exists and what could be made better. Some of these systems, like Polycom's, offer a wide range of features that enhance the user experience and some, like lighting adjustments, are out of the scope of this internship. An analysis of the different cameras to be used is presented and the architecture of the existing video conference software is detailed. The integration with Kurento Media Server is also a vital part of the project since it is where the face detection module is contained. The result of the development is a video conference web application that supports 360º video users and can detect the faces of several people.

In recent years, eye contact problem always exists in daily video conferencing. Users will feel more comfortable and pay more attention to the conversation with proper eye contact. This thesis proposes a novel virtual view synthesis system. Given two video streams from two cameras located in either side of the monitor (ex: Left and right), the system synthesizes a high quality view-corrected virtual image. In the previous work, synthesized images take lots of time for CPU computation. Special hardware-support may be the only solution if the application needs to be high quality and real-time. However, the performance of our proposed fast scanline based matching algorithm can reach real-time, comparing to certain conventional matching algorithms. To achieve natural virtual image synthesizing, the modified dynamic programming approach is adopted. Artifacts and occlusion problems are also handled. A number of examples demonstrate the high quality results of the proposed algorithm.

Adaptive rate control is an important issue in video transmission. The rate control technique is very significant both in wired network and in wireless network. In this thesis, we introduce a new adaptive rate control scheme based on face detection technique and TCP-friendly (TFRC). The applications of video transmission, such as video phone and video conference, are getting more and more popular. In these applications, since human faces are the most important part, we take the face detection technique into our work. In addition, some video conferences use mobile devices instead of PC to enhance mobility. Therefore, we do our experiment on pocket PC. In our experiment, the sending rate of video streaming is calculated by the TFRC. The results of the experiments show that the new algorithm can improve the video quality of the region of the human face and the user can see the human face more clearly.

A system following the video conference standard H.261 isimplemented in this thesis. H.261 is a compromise betweencoding performance, real-time requirement, implementation complexity and system robustness. It consists of some mainparts: DCT/IDCT, quantization/inverse quantization, variablelength coding, BCH code and motion estimation. Although H.261has given many rules for encoder and decoder, there are manyparts in which we can develop some algorithms to improve theimage quality and coding speed. In this thesis, we adopt afast DCT/IDCT algorithm to reduce the computation. In motionestimation, we propose a algorithm which is based on 3-step search. The algorithm uses the fact that partial error isalways less than total error, and the characteristics ofstill blocks and motion blocks to reduce the search time.Based on the characteristic of still blocks, it can eliminateup to 80% of the 3-step search. Based on the characteristicof motion blocks, it can quickly find a matching block.Besides, an algorithm is provided to guarantee fitting therequirement of force updating in H.261.

This thesis devotes to design a video conference system ,which is based on the main VoIP protocol - Session Initiation Protocol and Real-Time Transport Protocol. The SIP-based video conference system focus on four topics. First , video conference system can reduce space of memory and decode the correct picture from multi-source by the design of multi-user based on H.263 video code. Video Conference services are developing rapidly cause by the discovery of the Cloud Computing Services, changes in the communication environment, and improvements of Video Conferencing. Regarding customers, methods, places, or the purpose of using the Cloud-Based Video Conference Services (CVCS), the markets have been changed obviously. In order to raise the stremgth of competition in the enterprise, the choices of CVCS are increasing. The use of the video Conference has a professional property and a specialty uses in the Cloud-Based operation service, which increased the difficulty of the choosing and evaluating for the enterprises. Also, the CVCS is a new field of research and which has had fewer advises in the past. For the reason, the study uses the Modified Delphi Method and the Quality Function Deployment to build the Evaluation Method. Moreover, the study included the literature review, the users’ suggestion and the experts’ suggestion, which makes the evaluation indicators more objective. Compared to the Evaluation Method, the study would provide an objective, affection and systematic Evaluation Method. Final, the study proposed 6 dimensions as “Information Quality”, “System Quality”, “Service Quality”, “Perceived Risk”, “Mobile Commerce”, “Social Presence”, total 45 evaluation indicators. The study also used an individual case to analyze and confirm the possibility of this result. For the enterprises that have not yet used the Cloud-Based Video Conference Service, the results could serve as the reference while choosing. It cloud also provide the CVCS provider to modify the functions of the CVCS.

As the hand-held device , such as Pocket PC or Smartphone , is popularized gradually, and Microsoft offers programmer abundant API on Windows Mobile platform, developing the application about action device emerges. The program that implements VOIP function like the video conference on the hand-held device, can bring the mobility into full play, making the convenience of the video conference to go where and see where. The goal of the thesis is to implement, and we use Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 SDK as the developing the video conference tools. In addition, considering the compatibility with general PC, we also develop the video conference application based on Windows XP platform to communicate with the program on the hand-held device. Besides, in the architecture of the video conference program, we use the Transcoding Server on the PC to implement the rate control function and the face detection in the future. The video conference program on the hand-held device also offers the prototype of this application on the Windows Mobile 5 platform to the enterprise.

The study at 3D distance learning environment below make use of three cameras retrieval article different angle image, Furthermore retrieval image will appear the article of the 3D and this article send to Web page which can be studying. Make uses to understands to teach scholar that want the teaching of expressed contents clearly. This research divide into three parts, the difference carry for : retrieval ,server and client. This three aspects comes to attain us the 3D of that presented teaching, we don't need expensive three-dimensional equipment, just make use of 3 cameras and a personal computer, therefore we reduce the cost. We will make use of at distance learning teaching on, come improves formerly the teaching of 2D image. Let the contents of the teaching attract to study, furthermore let to study to understand the contents of knowledge.

An investigation of fully software-based multimedia conference system over Internet is presented in this thesis. The major challenge for this application is to achieve real time processing. We propose a regions base hybrid coding algorithm which can perform foreground and background segmentation. This can provide large speed-up due to static background on most of the multimedia conference applications. This property can reduce both data rate and computation load. Because video transmission over Internet is unreliable, rate control is necessary to meet the bandwidth of network, by minimizing the data rates of transmitter. Since the bandwidth is varied with time, we use one order Markov model to dynamically adapt video transmission accordingto network condition. Besides the video algorithm, we also propose some software-based skills to yield 30% performance improvement. The experimental results have shown the proposed system can work satisfactory over LAN.
