Asad, Mariam. "Making it difficult: modernist poetry as applied to game design analysis." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/39617.

Full text
Abstract:
The process of reading a modernist poem is just as much a process of deconstructing it: the language is designed to make meaning through inefficient means, like the aforementioned fragmentation and assemblage. The reader must decode the text. This is what I want to extract as a point of entry to my videogame analysis. The process of reading is not unlike the process of playing. Instead of linguistic structures, a player must navigate a game‟s internal rule system. The pleasure for both the reader and player comes from decoding the poem and game, respectively. I am not making claims that relationships between modernist poetry and videogames are inherent or innate. Similarly, I am not providing a framework to apply one medium to the other. Instead I want to investigate how each medium uses its affordances to take advantage of its potential for creative expression. I do not consider poetry or literature to be superior to videogames, nor am I invoking the argument that videogames should imitate earlier media. My goal is to compare specific modernist poems and videogames to see how each medium makes meaning through its respective processes.

Boren, Joshua K. "Playing God: An Analysis of Video Game Religion." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2016. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1424.

Full text
Abstract:
Video games offer a liberating, virtual-community building and meaning-making out-of-body experience for those that wholeheartedly engage in them. The lore and backstory of some of the most popular games (League of Legends, Kingdom Hearts, and World of Warcraft) are heavily influenced by all types of religion. In addition, and contrary to popular perception, a growing number of video games offer a global medium for instilling positive morals in society. As a result, video games become a religious placeholder or pseudo-religion for many of the most devoted gamers, because they offer many of the same experiences that religions do. This can be a potential explanation as to why organized religion is on the downswing in America.

ABSTRACT: The video game industry is presently one of the most valuable and lucrative of its kind. As is expected from any active member in this industry, video game developers aspire to secure a share of that market and income. Currently, the demand to deliver video games is such that at times, one of the most important moments of product development is overlooked – usability evaluation – resulting in less enjoyable or playable video games. Furthermore, those that are evaluated are done so at the cost of methods that are not completely accurate and that do not respect the uniqueness of the media. The present study emerges, therefore, with the objective of presenting a new methodology that can challenge the mentioned predicament. The proposed methodology is one part of an empirical study that counted with participants of various gaming experiences and made use of two instruments: a questionnaire and secondly, a technology many have yet to accept – eye tracking – a method capable of measuring eye movement and eye positions. The acquired data from the questionnaires along with eye tracking results were analyzed and served as the basis for the greater objective of this study: the development of guidelines that can assist in the augmentation of video game development.

Abstract:
Crackshell is an indie game studio situated in Stockholm. They released particular iterations of a game called Hammerwatch, which is developed with their in-house game engine and they are still working to extend both the Hammerwatch and the game engine. Hammerwatch is a rogue-like multiplayer game played by up to four players in a single session by using peer to-peer network topology. These days, Hammerwatch has gotten significantly popular and the planned features have led the team to question of whether their network utilization is performant and in what ways they can improve this utilization. Even though they the are ones who implemented the network part of Hammerwatch, they don’t exactly have an understanding of the underlying behavior of the utilization, nor they have any way to analyze it currently. This project is aimed to design and implement a proper tooling implementation for their data analysis needs by identifying the network topology, datastructures, extraction, storage and providing an environment that is easy to analyze the network utilization. In order to achieve this aim, an iterative approach through design thinking has been conducted with Crackshell. In this regard, there were certain decisions to be made in accordance with the constraints and the purpose of the tooling, which is defined with the help of Crackshell by the conducted workshops as a module of the design thinking approach. The above-mentioned strategy allowed a swift understanding of the problemthat led the tooling to be approved as both helpful and easy-to-use by Crackshell. The data analysis tool was implemented by using a local data extraction solution, MongoDB and Jupyter Notebook in Python together with extensions that helped further with the analysis of the collected data. The results of the data analysis deemed itself as a significant success, where problems such as the game events being sent unnecessarily frequently, stale data issues, caching opportunities, and potential data clustering issues in network packets were pointed out. Crackshell was happy with the provided ability to look at their network utilization in a detailed manner, which led them to use the implemented tooling for further analysis as Hammerwatch is kept developing.

Breaux, Chet Daniel. "(Don't) Stop Playing That Game: A Rhetorical Analysis of the Video Game Addiction Stereotype." TopSCHOLAR®, 2011. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1067.

Full text
Abstract:
The growing popularity of game addiction discourse has necessitated study of how video game critics rhetorically construct addiction. In the following thesis, I analyze contemporary examples of texts that link game addiction to drug abuse. I use Robert Cover’s analysis of how game addiction stereotypes form in conjunction with Aristotle’s rhetorical principles to isolate the persuasive appeals used by authors to rhetorically construct game play as addictive. These addiction arguments, however, are rooted in a larger historical context, and I present examples of game guidebooks and comic books published in the late 1970s and early 1980s to illustrate their rhetorical responses to game addiction rhetoric. I found addiction arguments utilize fear appeals combined with ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade audiences to reject games as potentially dangerous and worthless virtual pursuits. The authors of early game texts use ethos, pathos, and logos to dismantle fear appeals and present video games as a new genre that can be mastered through skill and practice rather than a meaningless virtual experience. This research provides ground for further explorations of game addiction rhetoric, and implications for the continued study of video games.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the contemporary world of video games and analyzes why people engage with single player and multiplayer video game experiences. Based on the uses and gratifications framework, this study examines how college students are engaging with video games and if they prefer single player or online multiplayer video games. Focus groups were conducted with college students to explore the video game culture. The results demonstrated that participants preferred single player video games due to less interruption from social interactions with online multiplayer games, but also to avoid harassment and negative criticisms that continue to plague online multiplayer experiences. Results also suggest that participants seek solitude while engaging with video games in order to become immersed within the game for a more relaxed and fun experience. Gratification dimensions were included from previous research including: arousal, challenge, competition, diversion, fantasy, and social interaction. Several new dimensions not matching previous research were discovered in the data that provided new perspectives on why players engage with single player video games. The participants discussed that single player video games could be played at their own pace, stopped at any time, and then continue their experience at their leisure. Participants were also researching and anticipating new game projects from their favorite developers. Additionally, participants suggest that if the developers made video games they enjoy playing, then the participants would continue to support and follow their future game projects.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to immense popularity of video games the author investigates the presence of gender portrayal within them. The purpose of this study is to thoroughly analyse a general phenomenon, such as gender, within video games to develop a better understanding of its particularities in this form of media and to expand the general body of knowledge on video games as a research topic. As prior literature shows, gender within video games can be either defined by its biased and sexualized character or by a tendency towards equality and strength for woman. To explain those varied results the author introduces the category of role as an important factor for character representation based on the use of theoretical frameworks of symbolic interactionism, more particularly dramaturgical approach of E. Goffman. She then further proceeds with a qualitative discourse analysis of both protagonist and support characters from 22 different games. The author finds that there is a visible difference within the manners females are presented depending on their role. Lead characters are more likely to be strong, independent and self-sufficient whereas support characters most often require immediate help, are dependent on others and are more likely to be abused. Presented results can account for some of the variety in prior research and they open the field of video game studies to possibly new research topics.

Abstract:
Excessive video play has been well documented over the course of the last decade. So much so that newest version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; APA, 2013) has included excessive video gaming as disorder categorized as internet gaming disorder. To date, several researchers have designed assessments to evaluate excessive video game play based on the previous editions and current editions of the DSM. However, these assessments primarily measure the criterion established in these manuals, instead of measuring the maintaining function of the video game play. The field of applied behavior analysis has been utilizing functional assessments for the last 30 years and has showed evidence of effective results across different populations and environments. Therefore, the purpose of this proposed study is to validate an indirect functional assessment entitled the Video Game Functional Assessment-Revised (VGFA-R) by means of conducting content, construct and criterion related validity.

Cao, Yong. "ADVERTISING A VIRTUAL WORLD: A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF CHINESE AND U.S. VIDEO GAME ADVERTISEMENTS." OpenSIUC, 2010. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/164.

Full text
Abstract:
Video game advertising is a major venue for game industry to promote its products. As a form of advertising, game advertising reflects national cultural values. It also manifests game cultural values which gamers are able to identify with. Millions of people, youth and children in particular, are being exposed to game advertising. Video game advertising may not only influence viewers' purchasing decisions, but has the potential to influence their attitudes and perceptions of important societal issues such as gender roles, violence and sex. However, few studies have examined the information content and messages of game advertising. The purpose of this study is to begin to fill the gap. This study examined the content of 1,021 print game advertisements in four popular game magazines published between December 2006 and May 2008 in China and the United States. The study was built on a variety of theoretical backgrounds and game studies. First, built on Resnik and Stern's (1977) classification of information cues and conceptual differences between advertising service and tangible products, the study found that Chinese game advertisements used more information cues than U.S game advertisements. Second, built on a variety of cross-cultural frameworks including Hofstede's ─ individualism vs. collectivism, Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck's human and nature relationship and time orientation, the study found that that U.S. game advertisements used more individualistic appeals, manipulation-of-nature appeals and future-time-orientation appeals than Chinese game advertisements. It was found that Chinese game advertisements used more collectivistic appeals, oneness-with-nature appeals and past-time-orientation appeals than U.S. game advertisements. Third, the study, on the basis of synthesizing game literature, examined gender representation, sex and violence, and major game cultural values in Chinese and U.S. game ads. The study found that in both Chinese and U.S game advertisements, males were more likely to be featured (83.5% in U.S. ads and 55.9% in Chinese ads) as primary characters than females (12.4% in U.S. ads and 42% in Chinese ads). Female characters were sexualized when presented. The study also found 29.8% of Chinese advertisements contained sexual content and only 4% of U.S. game advertisements contained sexual content. It was found violent content was common in U.S. game advertisements and 61% of U.S. game advertisements contained violent content. U.S. game advertisements contained more violent words than Chinese game advertisements. The study examined three online game cultural characteristics reflected in game ads. Compared with U.S. ads, Chinese game advertisements used more character progression, virtual item accumulation and socialization appeals. Limitations of the study and directions for future study are discussed.

Abstract:
Many Swedish video game companies have in recent years been very successful in terms of share price development. Why is it like that? With the purpose to gain an increased understanding of the investor's choice, we here examine which business models are used in the Swedish video game industry. More specifically, we try to identify what similarities do the business models in the successful companies share and what similarities do the non-performing companies share. The analytical framework used is based on Business Model Canvas adapted to the video game industry. We use a qualitative approach with case studies of 10 listed Swedish video gaming companies, five successful and five non-performing, in terms of share price development. The data collected is from secondary sources, mainly the companies' annual reports, fitting the investors narrative with the assumption that secondary data is generally what influences the stock price. In general, the results suggest that similarities between business models among the successful companies largely coincide with similarities between the non-performing companies, which makes the information less valuable for understanding investors' choices. Nevertheless, one unique similarity among successful companies applies to that they in general have broad gaming portfolios that target several unrelated customer segments, i.e. a diversified market. The non-performing companies instead mainly target a niche market. Another unique similarity among successful companies’ business models concerns their use of acquisition strategies. In the non-performing companies' business models, acquisition strategies are largely lacking.

Abstract:
In this essay a mediated video game reception of the game Life Is Strange is made, with the purpose of examining the players' meaning-making processes from a gender perspective. The materials of this essay consist of videos from six different YouTube channels where each player film themselves whilst playing through Life Is Strange as a way to review and share the gaming experience. The results show how the meaning-making processes are littered with gender discourses and affects. The affects offset discourses by amplification or by revealing discord between available cultural narratives and the simulated reality of the game. Even though the game highlights themes like female-centric relationships, suicide, euthanasia, lesbianism, socio-economic circumstances, social accountability and men's violence against women, it successfully delivers highly involving, enjoyable and appreciated gameplay experience. The game is shown to provide players with a platform around which they can connect and continue to discuss, raise awareness and produce knowledge around these important topics. The fan generated culture will in turn, reach a much larger audience than the game sales numbers reflect.

Abstract:
Contemporary research on media violence has shown the importance of examining the violent presentation of American video games and the correlation between games and the current U.S. game rating system. However, not many studies in this field have been conducted in China, especially regarding the importance of its pending official game rating system which has caused much controversy nationwide. In an effort to seek academic evidence for developing China's official game rating system, this study examined and compared the violence in fourteen of the most popular American and Chinese electronic games in 2004.These fourteen Chinese games and American games were selected for content analysis of the quantity and context of game violent interactions. The percentage breakdown of PATs (violent interactions) was coded by rate per minute, as was perpetrator characteristic, target characteristic, weapon used and visual perspective. The goal of the study was to determine if the popular Chinese electronic games carry as much violence as do popular American games, and if the context of violence in the former is significantly different from that in the latter. The American games were used as a basis for comparison to Chinese games for this study. The results of the study showed that popular Chinese games featured as much violence as American games. However, their context of violence was significantly different in terms of perpetrator characteristic, weapon used and visual perspective.Based on the results, the researcher concluded that China would definitely need a game rating system. However, the significant difference in the context of violence suggested that the Chinese rating system does not necessarily have to be the same as the U.S. system.

Abstract:
Early-stage investors increasingly impact the surging video game industry. Thus, understanding their thought processes provides vital insight for entrepreneurs. This thesis explores how early-stage investors assess investment opportunities in the Swedish game industry by presenting semistructured interviews with three prominent angel investors. Thematic analysis was performed on the interview data to extract significant themes regarding investors’ thought processes. Themes were then contrasted with previous research on investor decision-making to establish emergent patterns in the game industry. Results indicate that investors regard the composition and reliability of the team and pursue long-term involvement in companies. It is particularly important for teams to inspire trust. If investors can connect to teams personally, it facilitates successful long-term collaboration. Future research should focus on interviewing investors in other flourishing game markets, such as the U.S. or Chinese. Congruent results may lay the foundation for a framework to aid developers with acquiring funds in the broader game industry.

Abstract:
The videogame now occupies a unique territory in contemporary culture that offers a new perspective on conceptions of high and low art. While the fear that the majority of videogames 'pacify' their audience in an Adornian "culture industry" is not without justification, its reductionism can be countered by a recognition of the diversity and aesthetic potential of the medium. This has been proposed by sociologist, Graeme Kirkpatrick, although without close attention to the role of music. Videogame music often operates in similar ways to music in other mixed-media scenarios, such as film, or opera. In the same way that film music cannot be completely divorced from film, videogame music is contingent on and a crucial part of the videogame aesthetic. However, the interactive nature of the medium - its différance - has naturally led to the development of nonlinear musical systems that tailor music in real time to the game's dynamically changing dramatic action. Musical non-linearity points beyond both music and videogames (and their respective discourses) toward broader issues pertinent to contemporary musicology and critical thinking, not least to matters concerning high modernism (traditionally conceived of as resistant to mass culture). Such issues include Barthes's "death of the author", the significance of order/disorder as a formal spectrum, and postmodern conceptions and experiences of temporality. I argue that in this sense the videogame medium - and its music - warrants attention as a unique but not sui generis aesthetic experience. Precedent can be found for many of the formal ideas employed in such systems in certain aspects of avant-garde art, and especially in the aleatoric music prevalent in the 1950s and 60s. This thesis explores this paradox by considering videogames as both high and low, and, more significantly, I argue that the aesthetics of videogame music draw attention to the centrality of "play" in all cultural objects.

Abstract:

Video games represent more than just a simple pastime for young people. With advances in technology, developers have been able to effectively mimic the human experience presenting realistic three-dimensional spaces filled with even the minutest details of everyday life, and this offers a legitimate space for scholarly analysis. Open-world games, which allow for unparalleled exploration of virtual worlds, offer gamers a look at society and culture through various lenses, offering social commentary on issues like racism, class struggle, and conspicuous consumption. "Grand Theft Auto IV" is one of the most popular games of all time, and a deeper look at the narratives within the game world of Liberty City proves that video games offer gamers more than just a mindless pastime.

In recent years the video game industry has been of great importance in the business world beyond the role of a cultural medium. With its huge size and potential for more growth, the industry has attracted many newcomers. The target customers are expanding to females and elders who have not been known to be game players. Moreover, the introduction of new platforms, personal computers and mobile devices, broadens the application of the video games. Because of its diversified mechanisms and platforms, the business models of the gaming industry have evolved. In this thesis, the traditional and newly invented business models are introduced with an analysis of pros and cons through real cases of gaming companies. The analysis of Activision-Blizzard and Electronic Arts shows the current business strategies of two giants in the industry, "diversification" and "casual games". Moreover, the huge difference of financial performances of two companies indicates the risk of an overbroad portfolio and investment in an unfamiliar genre.

Abstract:
Digital games incorporate systems that allow players to customise and develop their controllable in-game representative (avatar) over the course of a game. Avatar customisation systems represent a point at which the goals and values of players interface with the intentions of the game developer forming a dynamic and complex relationship between system and user. With the proliferation of customisable avatars through digital games and the ongoing monetisation of customisation options through digital content delivery platforms it is important to understand the relationship between player and avatar in order to provide a better user experience and to develop an understanding of the cultural impact of the avatar. Previous research on avatar customisation has focused on the users of virtual worlds and massively multiplayer games, leaving single-player avatar experiences. These past studies have also typically focused on one particular aspect of avatar customisation and those that have looked at all factors involved in avatar customisation have done so with a very small sample. This research has aimed to address this gap in the literature by focusing primarily on avatar customisation features in single-player games, aiming to investigate the relationship between player and customisation systems from the perspective of the players of digital games. To fulfill the research aims and objectives, the qualitative approach of interpretative phenomenological analysis was adopted. Thirty participants were recruited using snowball and purposive sampling (the criteria being that participants had played games featuring customisable avatars) and accounts of their experiences were gathered through semi-structured interviews. Through this research, strategies of avatar customisation were explored in order to demonstrate how people use such systems. The shortcomings in game mechanics and user interfaces were highlighted so that future games can improve the avatar customisation experience.

The relationship between video games and learning is a topic of interest for academic fields. But how can a voluntary activity, like playing video games, motivate students to be academically productive? This dissertation used the popular video game, Minecraft, to measure the intrinsic motivation of 7th and 8th grade students in mathematics class, using a Self-Determination Theory (SDT) framework. The results demonstrated that intrinsic motivation remained at high levels, as long as students are competent in game controls and were relatively free to do what they wanted within the general guidelines in the video game environment. Second, the role of social presence contributed to immersion in the video game environment and played a role in the continued motivation to play. Third, although there was no impact on rote measures of learning, such as memorizing vocabulary definitions, the Minecraft video game environment affected students’ ability to problem solve, as was evidenced by pre- and post-tests of rote and conceptual learning.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the experiences of gamers playing as multiple first-person video game protagonists in Halo 3: ODST. The aim of the study was to develop an understanding of player experience, principally for the benefit of developers in the gaming industry, where a large number of contemporary video games have multiple playable characters. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used as a research methodology, with data gathered primarily through semi-structured interviews. The key finding was a dissatisfaction among participants at points where gameplay design did not complement narrative design, and where a late plot-twist was not as enticing as the original premise.

Abstract:
Localisation is the process of taking a product and adapting it to fit the culture in question. This usually involves making it both linguistically and culturally appropriate for the target audience. While there are many areas in video game translations where localisation holds a factor, this study will focus on localisation changes in the personalities of fictional characters between the original Japanese version and the English localised version of the video game Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and its expansion Heavensward for PC, PS3 and PS4. With this in mind, specific examples are examined using Satoshi Kinsui's work on yakuwarigo, role language as the main framework for this study. Five non-playable characters were profiled and had each of their dialogues transcribed for a comparative analysis. This included the original Japanese text, the officially localised English text and a translation of the original Japanese text done by myself. Each character were also given a short summary and a reasoned speculation on why these localisation changes might have occurred. The result shows that there were instances where some translations had been deliberately adjusted to ensure that the content did not cause any problematic issues to players overseas. This could be reasoned out that some of the Japanese role languages displayed by characters in this game could potentially cause dispute among the western audience. In conclusion, the study shows that localisation can be a difficult process that not only requires a translator's knowledge of the source and target language, but also display some creativity in writing ability to ensure that players will have a comparable experience without causing a rift in the fanbase.

Abstract:

Sweden. 1980. The term ‘video violence’ becomes public through the debates show Studio S. The show urges and obligates politicians to stop, regulate and ban video films with violent content from the market. 29 years later, the debates show Debatt raises concerns regarding a similar topic, ‘video game violence’. Both shows were produced and aired by the Public Service channels of Sveriges Television in Sweden.

The purpose of this thesis was to study and examine if the media encourages and nourishes moral panics to the general public through debates shows. How does the host/journalist interact to steer the debate to the media agenda and how has the power structure changed in the debate genre over the years? Do the media nurture the root of moral panics?

We based the study on a qualitative content analysis. We analyzed one episode from each of the two debate shows Studio S and Debatt. The method of analysis we used was discourse analysis with emphasis on relations and power structures. We also analyzed the episodes by using Goode and Ben-Yehudas five criteria’s for creating moral panic.

The study shows that both debates shows fail to mention the problem in a larger societal context. They tend to only portray a scapegoat. Furthermore, they often show one-sided and violent sequences from the cultural phenomena. They use discourses to maintain the firm power in the debates to fulfill their pre-constructed bias agenda. We’ve also observed that it has become much more difficult for a moral panic to gain momentum compared with 1980, because of the medias decentralization.

Abstract:
Video games are experience-based products and user satisfaction is key for their popularity. To design for as strong an experience as possible, game developers incorporate evaluation methods that help to discover their users’ expectations and needs. Despite such efforts, problems still occur with the game design that lower the user experience. To counter these problems, the evaluation methods should be investigated and improved. To address this need, I have explored various design tools and user experience theories. Applying these in a game evaluation context, I have analyzed user-created game reviews and conducted longitudinal user interview- and game diary studies in connection to playing a newly released game, in other words different methods to take advantage of users' expectations, opinions, attitudes and experiences. One result of the analysis of the obtained data is a set of “slogans” that illustrate how and why users lose interest in a game. A second result is a method for extracting user attitudes from pre-produced user reviews and how this can be used in game development. Thirdly, I introduce an alternative model, aimed at game user experience development, the Playsona. The Playsona is a lightweight tool that introduces a variant of the Persona-method, specifically for video game design.

Abstract:
The development of the video game industry and the increasing popularity of the medium as a form of entertainment have led to significant developments in the discipline of game studies and a growing awareness of the cultural significance of video games as cultural artefacts. While much work has been done to understand the narrative aspect of games, there are still theoretical gaps on the understanding of how video games generate their narrative experience and how this experience is shaped by the player and the game as artefact. This interdisciplinary study investigates how meaning is created in Western Role Playing Games (WRPGs) video games by analysing the narrative strategies they employ in relation to those commonly used in Heroic Epic and Fantasy narratives. It adopts the Bakhtinian concepts of chronotope and dialogue as the main theoretical tools to examine the creation and integration of narratives in WRPGs with a special focus on the time-space perspective. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Dragon Age Origins were chosen as representatives of the WRPG video game genre while Beowulf and the tale of Sigurd, as it appears in the Poetic Edda and the Volsung Saga, were chosen as representatives of the Heroic Epic poetic tradition. References are also made to Fantasy novels, especially the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. Textual analysis along with some techniques employed by researchers working with visual methodologies and compositional interpretation were used to analyse relevant aspects of the texts and games. The findings suggest that intertextual and genre materials considerably shape the narrative of WRPGs and exercise a profound dialogical effect on the ludonarrative harmony of the games investigated through their interaction with the game world and gameplay systems. This relationship is most visible in the chronotopic (time-space) aspect of the chosen games. The findings also suggest that Epic material dialogically orients the WRPG players' experience and adjusts their expectations and understanding of the fictional world. This study as well as the refining of chronotopic analytical tools to encompass chronotopic awareness, transportation, and flow may be of use in further chronotopic investigations of different games, literary genres, and/or other media artefacts.

Abstract:
It is extremely useful to exploit labeled datasets not only to learn models and perform predictive analytics but also to improve our understanding of a domain and its available targeted classes. The subgroup discovery task has been considered for more than two decades. It concerns the discovery of rules covering sets of objects having interesting properties, e.g., they characterize a given target class. Though many subgroup discovery algorithms have been proposed for both transactional and numerical data, discovering rules within labeled sequential data has been much less studied. In that context, exhaustive exploration strategies can not be used for real-life applications and we have to look for heuristic approaches. In this thesis, we propose to apply bandit models and Monte Carlo Tree Search to explore the search space of possible rules using an exploration-exploitation trade-off, on different data types such as sequences of itemset or time series. For a given budget, they find a collection of top-k best rules in the search space w.r.t chosen quality measure. They require a light configuration and are independent from the quality measure used for pattern scoring. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the Monte Carlo Tree Search framework has been exploited in a sequential data mining setting. We have conducted thorough and comprehensive evaluations of our algorithms on several datasets to illustrate their added-value, and we discuss their qualitative and quantitative results. To assess the added-value of one or our algorithms, we propose a use case of game analytics, more precisely Rocket League match analysis. Discovering interesting rules in sequences of actions performed by players and using them in a supervised classification model shows the efficiency and the relevance of our approach in the difficult and realistic context of high dimensional data. It supports the automatic discovery of skills and it can be used to create new game modes, to improve the ranking system, to help e-sport commentators, or to better analyse opponent teams, for example

Abstract:
For thousands of years, the visual images significantly affect the daily life of the human being, characterized as a great means of communication and expression. With technological advances, are evident the significant changes in visual language, which are molded to the new contexts in which it is. Video games, digital artifacts widespread in society that allow the user's immersion in playful environments with interactivity. They are subject to increasingly sophisticated aesthetic designs. Once they predominantly use visual language, there is a premise that the image plays a key role for them to fulfill their function properly. However, images in video games does not always follow a standard of quality, lacking studies and methods that help its development and understanding. Thus, this study aims to develop a method for the analysis of visual image in video games, considering the wide range of functions that it carries on such artifacts. For this, in order to allow the development of the method and ensuring their replication, were defined certain methodological procedures that involve: implementation and evaluation of a first model of the method; development of a second model; collection and analysis of data involving research subjects experts in the field; and the development of the final model. As a result, it can be perceived that the analysis of visual images in videogames can be performed from a systematic method, however, were identified numerous considerations about how the method can become more efficient.

Abstract:

The digital games take an increasing part of our western society. The time when gaming was excluded to the most frantic computer fans is long gone. Today the gaming industry competes with both the film- and music industry for the consumers’ attention.

Despite this, research regarding the digital games has been put aside for a long time. But there is an ongoing process in establishing game studies regarding content and expression aspects that go beyond the question about possible psychological effects and such. But this process is still young and disagreements occur concerning how the games should be approached as an object of study.

This debate, originating from two different approaches; the narratological and the ludological, has proven to be central to the research society. To reach a better understanding regarding storytelling within the digital games I carried out a narratological analysis of a video game; Shadow of the Colossus for Playstation 2. I used classical narratological tools regarding the syntagmatic structure of storytelling; Propp’s characters and functions and Todorov’s equilibrium formula.

To be able to carry out this analysis the first step was to identify the storytelling elements of the game so that these could be properly recognized. After that the narratological tools were applied to these. In order not to neglect the medium specific characteristics that the digital games hold, I implemented a minor ludological analysis of its rules, to see how these were connected with the potential storytelling.

The narratological analysis proved to be useful; a number of Propp’s functions were identified and the storytelling could also be described on the basis of Todorov’s equilibrium. Furthermore a clear connection between the storytelling of the game and the ludus rules, meaning the rules that define the winning conditions and how to reach them. The classic narratological analysis was fruitful, but the medium specific characteristics with systems of rules and their connection to the storytelling elements proved to be an important relationship to illustrate further.

Abstract:
The growth of the video game market in Brazil and globally is growing strongly and creating employment and income opportunities. This thesis presents an analytical model for the Brazilian video game industry allowing both industry leaders and the government to analyze policies to develop the local video game industry. Based on Creative Economy concepts, an exploratory survey identified seven of these aspects (Technology, Demand, Government, Intellectual Property, Human Capital, Creative Entrepreneurship and Creative Clusters) were selected for the model as latent variables and three were studied as resulting (dependent) variables (Revenue, Employment and Exports). The results shows that the seven variables of the model and its items are considered important for the creative videogame industry and have different impacts on it. An indicator allowed us to separate the variables according to perceived importance and suggest priority policies, with their expected short and long term results. These results open doors for empirical studies of variables that can operationalize quantitative models, as well as serving industry policymakers to better understand the need for coordination and supporting government policies to promote industry competitiveness, job creation and exports.

Abstract:
This study aims to explain the incentives and travel patterns for people who have consumed popculture tourism. Pop-culture refers to popular products such as video-games, comic-books, literature, film and t.v-shows. Pop-culture tourism refers to destinations and attractions based on popular culture products such as conventions, events, exhibitions, theme parks and destinations. This study takes on a qualitative approach in order to do so. The results were then analyzed through four different theories; Bourdieu’s theory on different capitals, his theory on habitus, his theory on fields and Lundberg & Lexhagen’s figure: Pop-culture Tourism: A Research Model. The results showed that the respondents social upbringing and (social) media consumption plays a central role in order for individuals to consume and partake in pop-culture tourism. Results did also show that cultural capital and social capitals was prominent for individuals who consume and partake in popculture tourism.

Abstract:
In a time of 'Big Data,' 'Personal Informatics' and 'Infographics' the definitions of data visualization and data analytics are splintering rapidly. When one compares how Fortune 500 companies are using analytics to optimize their supply chains and lone individuals are visualizing their Twitter messages, we can see how multipurpose these areas are becoming. Visualization and analytics are frequently exhibited as tools for increasing efficiency and informing future decisions. At the same time, they are used to produce artworks that alter our perspectives of how data is represented and analyzed. During this time of turbulent reflection within the fields of data visualization and analytics, digital games have been going through a similar period of data metamorphosis as players are increasingly being connected and tracked through various platform systems and social networks. The amount of game-related data collected and shared today greatly exceeds that of previous gaming eras and, by utilizing the domains of data visualization and analytics, this increased access to data is poised to reshape, and continue to reshape, how players experience games. This dissertation examines how visualization, analytics and games intersect into a domain with a fluctuating identity but has the overall goal to analyze game-related data. At this intersection exists play analytics, a blend of digital systems and data analysis methods connecting players, games and their data. Play analytic systems surround the experience of playing a game, visualizing data collected from players and act as external online hubs where players congregate. As part of this dissertation's examination of play analytics, over eighty systems are analyzed and discussed. Additionally, a user study was conducted to test the effects play analytic systems have on a player's gameplay behavior. Both studies are used to highlight how play analytic systems function and are experienced by players. With millions of players already using play analytics systems, this dissertation provides a chronicle of the current state of play analytics, how the design of play analytics systems may shift in the future and what it means to play with data.

Abstract:
Video games have demonstrated their value as a hobby and as a pedagogic tool, both in academic and professional fields. However, learning video games have to integrate pedagogical strategies and be fine-tuned to be efficient and adopted. Synthetic biology is an emerging field focusing on engineering living systems to achieve controlled functions. It shares concepts with crafting and engineering games. We designed the first synthetic biology crafting game, named Hero.Coli, for popularization and learning. In order to engage both forced and voluntary users, ie students and citizens, our main pedagogical strategy is stealth learning. This means creating an educational game with no interruption in the experience - due to explicit learning or assessment phases -, mimicking successful mainstream games. I used embedded analytics to continuously refine this new pedagogical tool, by spotting the bottlenecks and issues in level design, the eventual misconceptions revealed in posttests, and the learning successes. I validated the usefulness of the game by comparing pre- and posttests of players (n=89). I found an average of 32 percentage point increase between pretest and posttest correct answer rate per question. The higher achievements stemmed mainly from higher-order thinking questions as compared to lexical questions. This is in line with our expectation from the chosen stealth learning strategy, which prioritizes function - game mechanics - over lexicon. I then correlated different user tracking parameters to their posttest scores. Lastly, by analyzing surveys, we also revealed that interest in biology is more critical than education to explain the variance in learning. These results could lead to future adaptive learning improvements including user-tailored feedbacks, in-game or in-class. Overall, the Hero.coli framework facilitates future implementations of game-based learning solutions by exemplifying a methodological approach of game development: design, tracking and analytics, quick iteration and testing, and final evaluation

Abstract:
Humans receive large quantity of information from the environment with sight and hearing. To help us to react rapidly and properly, there exist mechanisms in the brain to bias attention towards particular regions, namely the salient regions. This attentional bias is not only influenced by vision, but also influenced by audio-visual interaction. According to existing literature, the visual attention can be studied towards eye movements, however the sound effect on eye movement in videos is little known. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the influence of sound in videos on eye movement and to propose an audio-visual saliency model to predict salient regions in videos more accurately. For this purpose, we designed a first audio-visual experiment of eye tracking. We created a database of short video excerpts selected from various films. These excerpts were viewed by participants either with their original soundtrack (AV condition), or without soundtrack (V condition). We analyzed the difference of eye positions between participants with AV and V conditions. The results show that there does exist an effect of sound on eye movement and the effect is greater for the on-screen speech class. Then, we designed a second audio-visual experiment with thirteen classes of sound. Through comparing the difference of eye positions between participants with AV and V conditions, we conclude that the effect of sound is different depending on the type of sound, and the classes with human voice (i.e. speech, singer, human noise and singers classes) have the greatest effect. More precisely, sound source significantly attracted eye position only when the sound was human voice. Moreover, participants with AV condition had a shorter average duration of fixation than with V condition. Finally, we proposed a preliminary audio-visual saliency model based on the findings of the above experiments. In this model, two fusion strategies of audio and visual information were described: one for speech sound class, and one for musical instrument sound class. The audio-visual fusion strategies defined in the model improves its predictability with AV condition

Du, Plessis Corné. "Video games as “play assemblages”: applying philosophical concepts from deleuze and guattari to create a novel approach to video games." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/16119.

Full text
Abstract:
The phenomena that we collectively refer to as “play” form a significant part of life at numerous levels. According to the play scholar, Johan Huizinga, play has not only been part of all human societies, it is also at the root of the development of numerous cultural activities, including structured games and sports, certain judicial and legal activities, war, and numerous forms of art. Despite its importance, play, with its various manifestations, is often relegated to being a children’s activity or an occasion of pure waste, and is a surprisingly marginalized topic in academic scholarship. In part to remedy this deficit, my aim in this thesis is to explore the comparatively new phenomenon of video games as a particular form of play. While there are undoubtedly many philosophical approaches that can respond to different aspects of the “problem” of video games, I propose that Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s philosophy of “difference” and “becoming” is particularly useful. On the one hand, Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophy provides a viable framework through which to determine the limitations of the current prominent theories in the field of video game studies, which include “narratology”, “ludology”, and the more recent “hybrid approach”. On the other hand, their philosophy enables one to extend the creative and transformative potential that is inherent to a philosophical “problem”, in this case the “problem” of video games. By adapting selected Deleuzian and Deleuzoguattarian philosophical concepts, including “assemblage”, “percept”, “affect”, “transversal becoming”, and “becoming-imperceptible”, I aim to establish a philosophical framework through which different forms of play, and different video games, can be analyzed in terms of their capacity to generate “difference” and “becoming”. More specifically, I argue that video games can be understood as particular kinds of “play assemblages” that can potentially open the player to “transversal becomings”. The video games that I analyze as play assemblages that can generate “transversal becomings” are Thatgamecompany’s Flower (2009) and Journey (2012). Importantly, “transversal becomings”, understood in this instance as the “becoming-other” of human individuals, have the potential to contribute to the individual’s capacity for creative thought and action. Therefore, I argue that video games, far from being activities of pure waste, can potentially open the player to various forms of “becoming-other”, which can, in turn, increase the player’s capacity to think differently, to become different and to create differences. Ultimately, I aim to promote the value of play and video games on the one hand, and the value of Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophy on the other hand, for the aim of extending the questioning power of life, and increasing our capacity to effectively respond to a continuously changing world of problems.

Wang, Ping. "Social game retrieval from unstructured videos." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/34673.

Full text
Abstract:
Parent-child social games, such as peek-a-boo and patty-cake, are a key element of an infant's earliest social interactions. The analysis of children's behaviors in social games based on video recordings provides a means for psychologists to study their social and cognitive development. However, the current practice in the use of video for behavioral research is extremely labor-intensive, involving many hours spent extracting and coding relevant video clips from a large corpus. From the standpoint of computer vision, such real-world video collections pose significant challenges in the automatic analysis of behavior, such as cluttered backgrounds, the effect of varying camera angles, clothing, subject appearance and lighting. These observations motivate my thesis work - automatic retrieval of social games from unstructured videos. The goal of this work is both to help accelerate the research progress in behavioral science and to take the initial steps towards the analysis of natural human interactions in natural settings. Social games are characterized by repetitions of turn-taking interactions between the parent and the child, with variations that are recognizable by both of them. I developed a computational model for social games that exploits the temporal structure over a long time-scale window as quasi-periodic patterns in a time series. I presented an unsupervised algorithm that mines the quasi-periodic patterns from videos. The algorithm consists of two functional modules: converting image sequences into discrete symbolic sequences and mining quasi-periodic patterns from the symbolic sequences. When this technique is applied to video of social games, the extracted quasi-periodic patterns often correspond to meaningful stages of the games. The retrieval performance on unstructured, lab-recorded videos and real-world family movies is promising. Building on this work, I developed a new feature extraction algorithm for social game categorization. Given a quasi-periodic pattern representation, my method automatically selects the most relevant space-time interest points to construct the feature representation. Our experiments demonstrate very promising classification performance on social games collected from YouTube. In addition, the method can also be used to categorize TV videos of sports rallies, demonstrating the generality of this approach. In order to support and encourage more research on human behavior analysis in realistic contexts, a video database of realistic child play in natural settings has been collected and is published on our project website (http://www.cc.gatech.edu/cpl/projects/socialgames), along with annotations. The unsupervised quasi-periodic pattern mining method represents a substantial generalization of conventional periodic motion analysis. Its generality is evaluated by retrieving motions of a range of quasi-periodicity from unstructured videos. The performance was compared with that of a periodic motion detection method based on motion self-similarity. Our method demonstrates superior retrieval performance with a 100% precision when the recall is up to 92.04%, with much fewer parameters than that of the other method.

Abstract:

Bijan Hamidi explores economic systems in video games and expands on the definition of virtual economics to include economic behavior. Gamers commonly look to gain advantages over their opposition during game play. This thesis performs an analysis of how those decisions are constructed and provides insight on where economic principles are found in game play.

This body of work is based upon preexisting virtual economic works from Edward Castronova, Zachary Simpson, and Richard Bartle. However, this work does not focus purely on economic markets, but extends to study economic behavior exhibited during play.

Abstract:
Since the release of the Nintendo Entertainment System in the 1980s, the video game industry has transformed itself to become very dependent of the transnational circulation and localization of its products. In this thesis, I take a look at this current trend of video game's transnationalization, analyze its processes and components as well as uncover its impact on both games and gamers. Through the analysis of video game localized both by the industry and by amateur translation groups, this thesis investigates how transnational circulation of Japanese video games from Japan to North America influences the definition of Japaneseness in this media as well as a binary and culturally determined interpretation of the video game global culture of circulation. This work focuses on the dynamics that drive different localization processes from both the industry and fan communities. It also sets to explore the conflicts that occur when certain translated titles do not blend in their new media environment or are rejected by certain fan communities. This thesis demonstrates that both those localization processes and reception conflicts shape the video game culture of circulation in a binary fashion, opposing notions of Japanese and Western video games. This thesis concludes by stating what is at stake in video game localization processes as well by explaning the risks entailed by relying to much on such as culturally determined interpretation of the media.

Blackburn, Jeremy. "An Analysis of (Bad) Behavior in Online Video Games." Scholar Commons, 2014. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5412.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation studies bad behavior at large-scale using data traces from online video games. Video games provide a natural laboratory for exploring bad behavior due to their popularity, explicitly defined (programmed) rules, and a competitive nature that provides motivation for bad behavior. More specifically, we look at two forms of bad behavior: cheating and toxic behavior. Cheating is most simply defined as breaking the rules of the game to give one player an edge over another. In video games, cheating is most often accomplished using programs, or "hacks," that circumvent the rules implemented by game code. Cheating is a threat to the gaming industry in that it diminishes the enjoyment of fair players, siphons off money that is paid to cheat creators, and requires investment in anti-cheat technologies. Toxic behavior is a more nebulously defined term, but can be thought of as actions that violate social norms, especially those that harm other members of the society. Toxic behavior ranges from insults or harassment of players (which has clear parallels to the real world) to domain specific instances such as repeatedly "suiciding"" to help an enemy team. While toxic behavior has clear parallels to bad behavior in other online domains, e.g., cyberbullying, if gone unchecked it has the potential to "kill" a game by driving away its players. We first present a distributed architecture and reference implementation for the collection and analysis of large-scale social data. Using this implementation we then study the social structure of over 10 million gamers collected from a planetary scale Online Social Network, about 720 thousand of whom have been labeled cheaters, finding a significant correlation between social structure and the probability of partaking in cheating behavior. We additionally collect over half a billion daily observations of the cheating status of these gamers. Using about 10 months of detailed server logs from a community owned and operated game server we next analyze how relationships in the aforementioned online social network are backed by in-game interactions. Next, we use the insights gained and find evidence for a contagion process underlying the spread of cheating behavior and perform a data driven simulation using mathematical models for contagion. Finally, we build a model using millions of crowdsourced decisions for predicting toxic behavior in online games. To the best of our knowledge, this dissertation presents the largest study of bad behavior to date. Our findings confirm theories about cheating and unethical behavior that have previously remained untested outside of controlled laboratory experiments or only with small, survey based studies. We find that the intensity of interactions between players is a predictor of a future relationship forming. We provide statistically significant evidence for cheating as a contagion. Finally, we extract insights from our model for detecting toxic behavior on how human reviewers perceive the presence and severity of bad behavior.

Abstract:
Many games are set in 3D worlds and have shifting camera viewpoints. In this study, we attempt to create and evaluate a Proof-of-Concept Worldspace Heatmap System that accounts for the shifting camera views in 3D game worlds, in an attempt to improve user testing processes. We test the system by conducting a stimulated recall user study, in which we examine the areas in a game that drew the attention of the participants, with the help of heatmaps placed in the game world. Our results include observations of several behavior patterns and participant evaluations of the Worldspace Heatmap System. We observed multiple indications in the data we gathered, that such a system can be useful for obtaining player behavior insights and for enhancing user testing processes, especially if some of the limitations are overcome.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The video game industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the U.S. economy, with violent video games topping the charts among fan favorites. Due to frequent violence and mass shootings that have struck our nation in recent years, the gaming industry has been subject to much blame for endorsing violent acts. While many researches and psychologists have conducted experiments and meta-analytic reviews to test the correlation between violent video games and mass shootings, the debate remains prevalent in the media, to date. This thesis will not aim to prove whether or not violent video games are largely responsible for malicious attacks, but rather analyze why the blame is often adverted specifically to the video game industry in the aftermath of public massacres. This paper will analyze the positive and negative effects of gaming, the social and behavioral tendencies often developed from playing video games, and the current controversies surrounding the industry.
