Abstract:
The problem of context-aware recommendation with content filtering for managing video data as part of an online video hosting platform has been considered. Approaches to creating online video hosting platforms with recommendation of video data have been considered. A comparison of popular online video hosting platforms is given. A method of context-aware recommendation of video data with content-based filtering is proposed, which involves saving information about the user’s interaction with the video, obtaining and saving information about which videos the user liked, determining the user’s context, forming a profile of user preferences, forming a profile of user preferences depending on context, determining the similarity of the video profile to the profile of the user’s preferences (with and without taking into account the context), determining the relevance of the video to the context, and the final determination of the relevance of the video to the user’s preferences based on the proposed summary indicator of relevance. The developed structure of the online video hosting platform with context-aware recommendation of video data is given. The algorithm of its work is considered. The database structure of the online video hosting platform with context-aware recommendation of video data is proposed.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to investigate the reasons for making online videos on platforms like Wistia, Twitch and YouTube. The available technologies and tools offered by the video sharing platforms have made the private online activities more professionalized. Even the practice of creating video content is becoming increasingly professionalized and commercialized. The motivations from outsides, which are frequently linked with work, i.e., the external factors are still more important for content creation than intrinsic motivations, which are connected to recreational work. This study illustrates how social impact affects the ideal subscription model for online video platforms. Paid, free, and trial strategies play the major role in choosing the strategy. Positive social influence and negative social influence are two cases provided by revenue models. This study summarizes the different video websites, relationship among the creators, and the online video which are analyzed in terms of its economics.

Abstract:
The relevance of the study of YouTube is due to the fact that today video hosting is a concentration of video materials of various thematic areas and channels producing content. This article presents the results of a study of the genres and formats used on the media platform YouTube to reflect information about extreme situations of a natural and man-made nature. Video hosting YouTube has become a platform not only for the distribution of user content, but also a modern communication channel for broadcasting the content of traditional media. It is this factor that allows you to identify genre and format ways of providing information. To compile a list of extreme and emergency situations for 2015–2019, State reports on the state of protection of the population and territory of the Russian Federation from natural and man-made emergencies posted on the website of the Russian Emergencies Ministry were studied. Then, keywords were searched on the video hosting site YouTube. Due to the fact that the study is part of a major scientific project aimed at studying the influence of psychotraumatizing factors on the speech function of a person in real extreme situations, one of the selection criteria was the presence of an emotional component in the video materials. The chronological framework of the study in five years, a wide range of YouTube channels, a body of video materials collected by a continuous sampling method, the use of typological and genre analysis made it possible to obtain representative conclusions about the genre-format specifics of video materials on socially significant topics. The results obtained show that the largest number of videos belong to the information group of genres. The analytical ones include the genre of journalistic investigation. Amateur YouTube channels use selfie shooting, shooting with voiceover commentary, a conversation with an eyewitness or victim, etc. Keywords: media, television, media, YouTube, video hosting, video content, extreme situations

Abstract:
Introduction YouTube is the most widely used video hosting website in the world; however, the quality and reliability of information is unknown. The aim of this study is to evaluate the content and distribution of the most popular videos on YouTube about migraine. Methods We searched for migraine-related videos on the online video hosting resource YouTube ( http://youtube.com/ ). Two authors screened the titles and video descriptions independently for all videos with a view count of ≥ 10,000 views. For each video we recorded descriptive data, the source/author and the primary purpose/content. Results We identified 351 eligible videos. In total, there was more than 3 days of content viewed more than 163 million times. Only 9% of these videos were authored by healthcare professionals. The majority (44%) of videos focused on complementary and alternative medicine. Discussion YouTube provides a wide array of easily accessible information on migraine, ranging from authoritative sources to potentially questionable content. If used uncritically, this may result in inadequate clinical management. Peer-reviewed information on migraine mechanisms and treatment is needed to provide the best available evidence for the public and patients. Ideally, a professional society or foundation such as the International Headache Society would develop, curate, and distribute content.

Online and other forms of distance learning are a permanent fixture in the educational landscape. Mathematics taught in distance formats pose an even greater challenge to students and teachers alike. As mathematics is a skill subject, demonstration of concepts and processes is crucial, if not critical, to learning, particularly to visual and kinesthetic learners. Video podcasts and screencasts are the answer to distance students’ need for demonstration and explanation of mathematical topics. In the current economic climate, however, expensive audio/video capture software and hardware, as well as a lack of technical media support, make it virtually impossible to create such course materials. Also, there is the question of ownership of intellectual property if created with institutional funds and/or resources. Free capture software and internet video hosting sites make it possible for an individual to create his or her own podcasts and screencasts for student use, retaining ownership of the created materials.Materials developed for online students can be made available to students in seated class. This benefits students who are unable to attend class, but can be made available to the entire class.

Abstract:
The analysis of the interconnection status-quo between content providers and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) is essential to understand the evolution of the Internet ecosystem. In the last years we have witnessed a spectacular increase of Internet traffic, especially multimedia content, which has driven both content providers and operators to rethink their interconnection models. This thesis performs an extensive traffic analysis from two perspectives to understand the rationale behind the Internet players. First, we analyse the traffic from the perspective of the evolution of the Internet protocols. Analyzing the protocols we pretend to observe whether the traffic pattern has changed while new applications have emerged and the demand have exploded. Second, we collect a dataset of Internet traces to evaluate the connectivity between access ISPs and the most popular content providers.

Warm, Anna. "The role of video game violence in hostile affect, cognitions and attributional style among adolescent players." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 1999. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/19055/.

Full text
Abstract:
A central aim of the present research was to investigate the short-term influences of video game play on aggression-related psychological states (including affect, cognitions, attributions and behavioural tendencies). More specifically, efforts were directed at establishing psychological effects of video games, which are causally related to game violence. A series of experiments examined short-term changes in adolescent players following various types of video game play. Experiment 1 identified a number of important game dimensions (i.e., characteristics of video game play) and explored their relationship to overall game enjoyment using path analysis. Of particular interest was the finding that violence did not strongly influence game enjoyment. In Experiment 2, increases in affective hostility and anger were reported after both types of video game play. Significantly greater increases after violent video game play provided support for a video game violence-hostile affect relation. However, the findings of subsequent experiments produced contrasting evidence showing that affective changes following video game play do not predictably vary as a function of game violence, but appear to be linearly related to video game pace. Game violence was more strongly implicated in cognitive effects of video game play. Evidence that game violence affects cognitions emerged on a variety of measures. These cognitive effects were seen as being reflective of aggression priming and short-term disinhibition processes. Finally, the extent to which short-term effects of violent video game play dispose players towards aggression was investigated using attribution and response tendency measures. Whilst the majority of the analyses failed to produce effects of game violence on attributions and response tendencies, an interesting interaction emerged involving game violence effects in females. The nature of the inteaction was viewed as being best explained by modelling processes, though disinhibition explanations were also viewed as being compatible. The findings were interpreted within existing social-psychological theories of media-elicited aggression. A number of video game effects could be accounted for using Berkowitz's cognitive neo-associationist framework, whilst other findings implicated the usefulness of Zillmann's excitation-transfer theory for understanding video game effects. Ultimately, the results were conceptualised using Anderson's General Affective Aggression model. Overall, the research was fairly successful in highlighting a number of short-term affective and cognitive states that can result from video game play. However, these effects were generally not manifested in behavioural tendencies towards others. The few findings that did implicate increases in aggressive behavioural tendencies were difficult to place within Anderson's framework, as they did not parallel changes at earlier stages of the model (i.e. affective and cognitive changes). Modelling and/or possibly disinhibition effects were viewed as the most appropriate theoretical concepts for explaining the findings relating to behavioural tendencies. The implications of the findings in relation to previous research on video game and media effects and limitations to the generalisability of the findings are discussed. Finally, several recommendations for future research are outlined.

Ivory, Adrienne Holz. "The Effects of Profanity in Violent Video Game Content on Players' Hostile Expectations, Accessibility of Aggressive Thoughts, Aggressive Feelings, and Other Responses." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77200.

Full text
Abstract:
Although the effects of violent video games on aggression in users have been researched extensively and the resulting body of research shows that violent video games can increase aggressive behaviors, aggression-related feelings and thoughts, and physiological arousal, no empirical studies to date have examined whether there are similar and parallel effects of verbal aggression (e.g., profanity) in video game content. A 2 X 2 between-subjects factorial experiment (N = 321) tested the effects of profanity used by protagonists (protagonist profanity present versus absent) and antagonists (antagonist profanity present versus absent) on users' hostile expectations, accessibility of aggressive thoughts, aggressive feelings, perceived arousal, use of profanity, enjoyment, presence, and perceived performance while taking into account the potential moderating role of gender and controlling for several individual difference variables. The study's factors were manipulated via the creation of four versions of an original three-dimensional "first-person shooter" video game. Profanity used by both protagonist and antagonist characters was found to have significant effects on players' hostile expectations, an important higher-order aggressive outcome that is the most direct precursor to aggressive behaviors in the process described by the general aggression model. There was limited evidence for effects of profanity in game content on players' accessibility of aggressive thoughts, aggressive feelings, and perceived arousal. Additionally, profanity had little impact on how much players used profanity themselves, how much they enjoyed the game, feelings of presence, and how they rated their performance in the game. These trends were consistent across a range of demographic, personality, and video game experience dimensions that were measured, even though several of these individual difference variables were found to be related to some outcome variables and to each other. Therefore, while this study's findings did not necessarily indicate imitative modeling of profanity, they point to the possibility of more general effects regarding aggressive outcomes. This study's findings emphasize the need for future research investigating the effects of profanity in video games and other media.<br>Ph. D.

Ventzke, Paul Erikl. "Esports on Netflix or DAZN? : the potential impact of hosting Esports on subscription-based OTT platforms." Master's thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/31290.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, electronic sports (short: 'esports'), has drawn significant attention and is trending to a global market. While esports attracts vast audiences, is slowly growing into mainstream culture, and is increasingly accepted as a professional practice, the monetization of esports still lags far behind other traditional sports. In those traditional sports and within the general video content consumption, over-the-top platforms and especially subscription-model platforms have disrupted the television and live-sports industry, leading to significant changes in the way people consume video content. At present, there are hardly any subscription-based platforms hosting esports, and academically wise there is little literature that examines the potential impact of broadcasts of competitive and professional video games on subscription-based platforms. The research questions of this dissertation approach aim at estimating the potential impact of subscription-based platforms on esports and how they could shape the esports industry in the medium term and long term. Using qualitative and quantitative data as well as literature research, the potential of subscription-based platforms is analyzed as a result of four main factors, and the future development of the primary industry stakeholders as well the future of the esports industry is predicted. As a result of this research, this dissertation assesses the potential of subscription-based over- the- top platforms of the esports industry as mediocre and predicts a rather neutral development in the future. Nevertheless, it identifies potentially advantageous factors that could improve the business environment for such platforms in the future.<br>Nos últimos anos, os desportos eletrónicos ("esports") têm vindo a captar significativamente a atenção e estão a evoluir para o mercado global.

Abstract:
AbstractRacism is prevalent within higher education, be it the attainment/degree awarding gap, lack of staff progression or the hostile environment which excludes Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students and staff. This article focuses on a student-led co-creation project which developed a video resource and interactive talking workshop to raise a call to action against racism in higher education. Undergraduate and alumni students from a range of disciplinary backgrounds contributed by sharing personal experiences and re-enacting stories of other students and staff. The resource was used as a student-led teaching tool as a way of empowering them to become anti-racist and challenge racism. This article outlines this co-created project and the empirical evaluation for the scheme. The authors conclude that higher education institutions need to recognise the importance of safe, co-created spaces to facilitate student voices and to encourage ways in which shared stories can facilitate a call to action in anti-racist work.

Abstract:
Software applications to share and remediate video have become ubiquitous and interacting with video has developed into a mainstream cultural activity in many societies. Like other media video has benefits and limitations for learning. We describe in this paper Video Pathways, a social Video Environment for learning through creation of multi-path online video. Our research assesses whether creation of video narratives multi-path representations, based on ubiquitous video from popular video hosting sites, is an effective way to represent knowledge. Initial formative evaluation with Video Pathways has revealed good usability and desirability and shown the creative potential of Video Pathways.

Abstract:
Today's modern aircraft are built with highly integrated avionics solutions that provide pilots enhanced situational awareness and reduced workload. This paper researches how highly integrated avionics can be architected in a way to simplify modification and augmentation of avionics systems with new features developed by third parties (in addition to the original avionics provider). Our objective is to determine the best technical solution(s) to enhancing avionics system architectures to support third party development. We reviewed technical solutions to enable third party integration, including Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE™), ARINC 661, video input, table driven user interfaces, and application co-hosting. We found that a system implementing all of these solutions concurrently offers maximum flexibility, but a system that, at a minimum, implements FACE and ARINC 661 is an efficient way to enhance an avionics system to support Third Party Development.

Abstract:
The article compares the functional properties of the leading foreign and domestic services that ensure the targeted use of video files on the Internet. Historical milestones in the formation of the main standards for processing, describing and integrating digital video (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MPEG-7, MPEG-21, H.263, H.264, H.265) are considered in the context of technology evolution to the current state. A special section of the article is devoted to the features of downloading, storing and organizing access to network video files using non-specialized file hosting, network storage, social networking services and video hosting. Because of comparing the properties of the names and descriptions of video files, their design and systematization through meta tags, categories, channels and playlists, recommendations were formulated for standardizing the functionality of video hosting. Particular attention is paid to optimizing the set of interactive services of network video players (playback speed and step forward length selectors, tables of contents, attachments, collective targeted notes, teasers, subtitles, end screens, attention retention analytics) in accordance with the intended purpose of the content used (storage, illustration of news and blogs, advertising, collection exposition, education, science and business). It is proposed to use a universal code for embedding video players in web pages of adaptive sites. The options for import substitution of basic and optional video hosting services are listed.

Abstract:
Integration of ICT significantly increases the possibilities of the educational process and extends the boundaries of the educational sphere as a whole. Publicly available resources, such as e-mail, blogs, forums, online applications, video hosting sites, can serve as the basis for building open learning and education. Informational educational technologies of learning foreign languages are in the focus of this study. The article represents the results of theoretical analysis of content on the subject of its personal- and didactic-definite orientation, as well as some aspects of the practical use of commonly used YouTube video materials in the process of teaching German as the first or second foreign language in higher education, namely at the pedagogical university. Taking into account the practical experience of using the materials of several relevant thematic YouTube channels with a fairly wide constant audience, a concise didactic analysis of their product is presented and recommendations on converting video content into methodological material in the framework of practical course of German language by future teachers are offered. Due to the suggested recommendations, the following tasks can be solved: enrichment of the vocabulary; semantization of phraseological units, constant figures of speech, cliché; development of pronunciation skills; expansion of linguistic competence; improving listening and speaking skills; increasing motivation to learn, etc.

Full text
Abstract:
Immigration has become one of the most divisive political issues in Europe and around the world. In Germany, Europe’s largest refugee hosting country, public attitudes have reached a low point. Besides increased “real-life” exposure to immigrants, exposure to all sorts of messages centered around immigration and refugees may be behind this worrying trend. While prior research has investigated the effects of specific subjects of the immigration discourse, such as specific frames or statistical information, it remains unclear how “neutral” reporting on refugee migration impacts public attitudes. We fill this gap using data from an original survey experiment conducted in Germany in May 2023. The findings suggest that a sober (neutral) video providing basic background information on Syrian refugees reduces humanitarian concerns for this refugee group, increases the perception of security threats and lowers the willingness to support refugee camps abroad. The results are driven by West German residents. Qualitative data reveals that, although the video is indeed perceived as “neutral”, it triggers security-related associations among West Germans, seemingly eroding concerns for refugees’ wellbeing. Conversely, East Germans, while starting from a slightly more negative base level, more frequently express indifference. Finally, merging our survey data with administrative data on the foreign population in respondents’ counties reveals that larger percentage increases in real-life immigration exposure mitigate the treatment effect.

Abstract:
The main objective of the study is to reveal the specifics of the functioning of the metaphor “war against coronavirus” in Ukrainian mediatized discursive practices of 2020-2021 compared to the trends of using this metaphor in the media environment of Western countries. A research methodology is based on the approach of critical discourse analysis. The work also takes into account the results of the study of the «war against coronavirus» metaphor, conducted using the materials of public discourses in Italy, Bulgaria, and Greece. A comparative analysis of the specifics of the functioning of this metaphor in mediatized discursive practices was carried out by the author of the article as part of a joint study of an international team of scientists – a contextualized online dictionary «In Other Words» (https://www.iowdictionary.org). Mediatized discursive practices mean communications with a mass audience through various media platforms, i.e., not only through mass media, but also with the use of blogs, social networks, messengers, video hosting, etc. The findings of the study of “war” metaphors in the domestic official discourse on the problems of combating the Covid-19 pandemic during 2020-2021 are based on the analysis of public speeches and greetings presented on the official website “President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Official Internet representation”, as well as interviews of the President with leading domestic and foreign publications. The result of the research is the conclusion that, in general, the metaphor “war against the coronavirus” has not gained such widespread use in Ukrainian official, political, and media discursive practices as in Western countries. This is due to the fact that starting in 2014, Ukraine repels the military aggression of the Russian Federation in the east of the country. Therefore, in 2020–2021, the word war was actively used in the public and personal discourses of Ukrainians primarily not in a metaphorical, but in a direct, denotative sense: war as an armed struggle in the east of Ukraine. Key words: Covid-19, metaphor “war against coronavirus”, political discourse, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, mediatized discursive practices, critical discourse analysis.

Drury, J., S. Arias, T. Au-Yeung, et al. Public behaviour in response to perceived hostile threats: an evidence base and guide for practitioners and policymakers. University of Sussex, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.20919/vjvt7448.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Public behaviour and the new hostile threats • Civil contingencies planning and preparedness for hostile threats requires accurate and up to date knowledge about how the public might behave in relation to such incidents. Inaccurate understandings of public behaviour can lead to dangerous and counterproductive practices and policies. • There is consistent evidence across both hostile threats and other kinds of emergencies and disasters that significant numbers of those affected give each other support, cooperate, and otherwise interact socially within the incident itself. • In emergency incidents, competition among those affected occurs in only limited situations, and loss of behavioural control is rare. • Spontaneous cooperation among the public in emergency incidents, based on either social capital or emergent social identity, is a crucial part of civil contingencies planning. • There has been relatively little research on public behaviour in response to the new hostile threats of the past ten years, however. • The programme of work summarized in this briefing document came about in response to a wave of false alarm flight incidents in the 2010s, linked to the new hostile threats (i.e., marauding terrorist attacks). • By using a combination of archive data for incidents in Great Britain 2010-2019, interviews, video data analysis, and controlled experiments using virtual reality technology, we were able to examine experiences, measure behaviour, and test hypotheses about underlying psychological mechanisms in both false alarms and public interventions against a hostile threat. Re-visiting the relationship between false alarms and crowd disasters • The Bethnal Green tube disaster of 1943, in which 173 people died, has historically been used to suggest that (mis)perceived hostile threats can lead to uncontrolled ‘stampedes’. • Re-analysis of witness statements suggests that public fears of Germany bombs were realistic rather than unreasonable, and that flight behaviour was socially structured rather than uncontrolled. • Evidence for a causal link between the flight of the crowd and the fatal crowd collapse is weak at best. • Altogether, the analysis suggests the importance of examining people’s beliefs about context to understand when they might interpret ambiguous signals as a hostile threat, and that. Tthe concepts of norms and relationships offer better ways to explain such incidents than ‘mass panic’. Why false alarms occur • The wider context of terrorist threat provides a framing for the public’s perception of signals as evidence of hostile threats. In particular, the magnitude of recent psychologically relevant terrorist attacks predicts likelihood of false alarm flight incidents. • False alarms in Great Britain are more likely to occur in those towns and cities that have seen genuine terrorist incidents. • False alarms in Great Britain are more likely to occur in the types of location where terrorist attacks happen, such as shopping areass, transport hubs, and other crowded places. • The urgent or flight behaviour of other people (including the emergency services) influences public perceptions that there is a hostile threat, particularly in situations of greater ambiguity, and particularly when these other people are ingroup. • High profile tweets suggesting a hostile threat, including from the police, have been associated with the size and scale of false alarm responses. • In most cases, it is a combination of factors – context, others’ behaviour, communications – that leads people to flee. A false alarm tends not to be sudden or impulsive, and often follows an initial phase of discounting threat – as with many genuine emergencies. 2.4 How the public behave in false alarm flight incidents • Even in those false alarm incidents where there is urgent flight, there are also other behaviours than running, including ignoring the ‘threat’, and walking away. • Injuries occur but recorded injuries are relatively uncommon. • Hiding is a common behaviour. In our evidence, this was facilitated by orders from police and offers from people staff in shops and other premises. • Supportive behaviours are common, including informational and emotional support. • Members of the public often cooperate with the emergency services and comply with their orders but also question instructions when the rationale is unclear. • Pushing, trampling and other competitive behaviour can occur,s but only in restricted situations and briefly. • At the Oxford Street Black Friday 2017 false alarm, rather than an overall sense of unity across the crowd, camaraderie existed only in pockets. This was likely due to the lack of a sense of common fate or reference point across the incident; the fragmented experience would have hindered the development of a shared social identity across the crowd. • Large and high profile false alarm incidents may be associated with significant levels of distress and even humiliation among those members of the public affected, both at the time and in the aftermath, as the rest of society reflects and comments on the incident. Public behaviour in response to visible marauding attackers • Spontaneous, coordinated public responses to marauding bladed attacks have been observed on a number of occasions. • Close examination of marauding bladed attacks suggests that members of the public engage in a wide variety of behaviours, not just flight. • Members of the public responding to marauding bladed attacks adopt a variety of complementary roles. These, that may include defending, communicating, first aid, recruiting others, marshalling, negotiating, risk assessment, and evidence gathering. Recommendations for practitioners and policymakers • Embed the psychology of public behaviour in emergencies in your training and guidance. • Continue to inform the public and promote public awareness where there is an increased threat. • Build long-term relations with the public to achieve trust and influence in emergency preparedness. • Use a unifying language and supportive forms of communication to enhance unity both within the crowd and between the crowd and the authorities. • Authorities and responders should take a reflexive approach to their responses to possible hostile threats, by reflecting upon how their actions might be perceived by the public and impact (positively and negatively) upon public behaviour. • To give emotional support, prioritize informative and actionable risk and crisis communication over emotional reassurances. • Provide first aid kits in transport infrastructures to enable some members of the public more effectively to act as zero responders.
