Abstract:
This paper describes how watermarking technology can be used to prevent the proliferation of Deepfake news. In the proposed system, digital watermarks are embedded in the audio and video tracks of video clips of trusted news agencies at the time the videos are captured or before they are distributed. The watermarks are detected at the social media network’s portals, nodes, and back ends. The embedded watermark imparts a unique identifier to the video, that links it to a blockchain. The watermarks also allow video source tracking, integrity verification, and alteration localization. The watermark detectors can be standalone software applications, or they can be integrated with other applications. They are used to perform three main tasks: (1) they alert the internet user when he watches an inauthentic news video, so that he may discard it, (2) they prevent a Deepfake news video from propagating through the network (3) they perform forensic analysis to help track and remove Deepfake news video postings. The paper includes Proof-of- Concept simulation results.

Abstract:
Because the data volume of news videos is increasing exponentially, a way to quickly browse a sketch of the video is important in various applications, such as news media, archives and publicity. This paper proposes a news video summarization method based on SURF features and an improved clustering algorithm, to overcome the defects in existing algorithms that fail to account for changes in shot complexity. Firstly, we extracted SURF features from the video sequences and matched the features between adjacent frames, and then detected the abrupt and gradual boundaries of the shot by calculating similarity scores between adjacent frames with the help of double thresholds. Secondly, we used an improved clustering algorithm to cluster the color histogram of the video frames within the shot, which merged the smaller clusters and then selected the frame closest to the cluster center as the key frame. The experimental results on both the public and self-built datasets show the superiority of our method over the alternatives in terms of accuracy and speed. Additionally, the extracted key frames demonstrate low redundancy and can credibly represent a sketch of news videos.

The problems associated with automatic analysis of news telecasts are more severe in a country like India, where there are many national and regional language channels, besides English. In this paper, we present a framework for multimodal analysis of multilingual news telecasts, which can be augmented with tools and techniques for specific news analytics tasks. Further, we focus on a set of techniques for automatic indexing of the news stories based on keywords spotted in speech as well as on the visuals of contemporary and domain interest. English keywords are derived from RSS feed and converted to Indian language equivalents for detection in speech and on ticker texts. Restricting the keyword list to a manageable number results in drastic improvement in indexing performance. We present illustrative examples and detailed experimental results to substantiate our claim.

Newspaper websites and online only news operations deliver an increasingly varied and comprehensive offer of original audiovisual content. In Spain, they cover current affairs and niche interests, complementing the video reports supplied by news agencies. The spoken word is a primary mode of expression, in the form of dialogues (interviews and debates) and speeches (comments and analyses), but more complex and visually appealing formats have been developed. There is a challenge to organise these packages and programmes in order to facilitate access and retrieval, which may help to improve user experience, and to maximise long-term consumption and value.

Abstract:
Recent advances in artificial intelligence make it progressively hard to distinguish between genuine and counterfeit media, especially images and videos. One recent development is the rise of deepfake videos, based on manipulating videos using advanced machine learning techniques. This involves replacing the face of an individual from a source video with the face of a second person, in the destination video. This idea is becoming progressively refined as deepfakes are getting progressively seamless and simpler to compute. Combined with the outreach and speed of social media, deepfakes could easily fool individuals when depicting someone saying things that never happened and thus could persuade people in believing fictional scenarios, creating distress, and spreading fake news. In this paper, we examine a technique for possible identification of deepfake videos. We use Euler video magnification which applies spatial decomposition and temporal filtering on video data to highlight and magnify hidden features like skin pulsation and subtle motions. Our approach uses features extracted from the Euler technique to train three models to classify counterfeit and unaltered videos and compare the results with existing techniques.

Abstract:
This study aims to reveal the construction of the news about the immoral video case that happened to Indonesia’s celebrity (GA) in various online news media through Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis approach. Data sources are taken from various online news media, namely detik.com, kompas.com, liputan6.com, and tribunnews.com in the range of publications from November 2020 to January 2021 with the research subject in the form of news headlines related to GA’s immoral video case. With three dimensions of discourse from Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis, the data analysis was carried out by the three stages: the descriptive analysis stage, the interpretation analysis stage, and the explanation analysis stage. The results found that through the microstructural dimension, the eight news headlines used language tools by 1) choosing vocabulary that was focused on the various phrase of video X, and 2) grammatical units which were dominated by clauses, 3) syntactic functions which were dominated by information as topicalization of discourse, and 4) a form of news that emphasizes the affirmation or clarification of GA’s immoral video case. Then, through the mesostructure dimension, the four online mass media have different characteristics and characters in their delivery of news, especially news about the GA’s immoral video case, but are still presented accurately and objectively so that the news content can be conveyed to readers. Finally, through the macrostructural dimension, with the reporting of immoral video cases, GA received a negative image in the eyes of the Indonesian people, because she was considered to be contrary to eastern culture. This negative image is formed because of the news using vulgar, tendentious, and transparent language to reflect press freedom that must be upheld, even though in composing news, sometimes using sarcastic language and making comparisons in it to attract readers' interest

Abstract:
News videos are valuable multimedia information on real-world events. However, due to the incremental nature of the contents, a sequence of news videos on a related news topic could be redundant and lengthy. Thus, a number of methods have been proposed for their summarization. However, there is a problem that most of these methods do not consider the consistency between the auditory and visual contents. This becomes a problem in the case of news videos, since both contents do not always come from the same source. Considering this, in this paper, we propose a method for summarizing a sequence of news videos considering the consistency of auditory and visual contents. The proposed method first selects key-sentences from the auditory contents (Closed Caption) of each news story in the sequence, and next selects a shot in the news story whose “Visual Concepts” detected from the visual contents are the most consistent with the selected key-sentence. In the end, the audio segment corresponding to each key-sentence is synthesized with the selected shot, and then these clips are concatenated into a summarized video. Results from subjective experiments on summarized videos on several news topics show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:
The present study explored the relationships between the tone in news presentations and the third-person effect. It investigated whether news stories about violent video games changed viewers perspectives based on the positively or negatively portrayed messages presented by the media. Overall, this study examined how news stories encouraged or discouraged viewers from supporting government regulations of violent video game content. An online survey of 388 American adults served as the main source of data collection. The study found that presumed media effects decreased on both others and self when viewers were exposed to positively presented news coverage. Subsequently, their support for regulating violent video games was reduced. However, no changes were found in third-person perception. In addition, those who were exposed to negative news coverage showed no significant changes in their perceived media effects on self, others, and support regulations on video game contents.

Abstract:
COVID-19-related online fake news poses a threat to Indian public health. In response, this study seeks to understand the five important features of COVID-19-related social media fake news by analyzing 125 Indian fake news. The analysis produces five major findings based on five research questions. First, the seven themes of fake news are health, religiopolitical, political, crime, entertainment, religious, and miscellaneous. Health-related fake news (67.2%) is on the top of the list that includes medicine, medical and healthcare facilities, viral infection, and doctor-patient issues. Second, the seven types of fake news contents are text, photo, audio, video, text and photo, text and video, and text and photo and video. More fake news takes the form of text and video (47.2%). Third, online media produces more fake news (94.4%) than mainstream media (5.6%). More interestingly, four social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, and YouTube, produce most of the fake news. Fourth, relatively more fake news has international connections (54.4%) as the COVID-19 pandemic is a global phenomenon. Fifth, most of the COVID-19-related fake news is negative (63.2%) which could be a real threat to public health. These results may contribute to the academic understanding of social media fake news during the present and future health-crisis period. This paper concludes by stating some limitations regarding the data source and results, as well as provides a few suggestions for further research.

Textual information in a video is very useful for video indexing and retrieving. Detecting text blocks in video frames is the first important procedure for extracting the textual information. Automatic text location is a very difficult problem due to the large variety of character styles and the complex backgrounds. In this paper, we describe the various steps of the proposed text detection algorithm. First, the gray scale edges are detected and smoothed horizontally. Second, the edge image is binarized, and run length analysis is applied to find candidate text blocks. Finally, each detected block is verified by an improved logical level technique (ILLT). Experiments show this method is not sensitive to color/texture changes of the characters, and can be used to detect text lines in news videos effectively.

Abstract:
With ongoing improvements in vehicle automation, research on automation trust has attracted considerable attention. In order to explore effects of automation trust on drivers’ visual distraction, we designed a three-factor 2 (trust type: high trust group, low trust group) × 2 (video entertainment: variety-show videos, news videos) × 3 (measurement stage: 1–3) experiment. 48 drivers were recruited in Dalian, China for the experiment. With a driving simulator, we used detection-response tasks (DRT) to measure each driver’s performance. Their eye movements were recorded, and automation-trust scale was used to divide participants into high trust group and low trust group. The results show that: (1) drivers in the high trust group has lower mental workload and paid more attention to visual non-driving-related tasks; (2) video entertainment also has an impact on distraction behavior, variety-show videos catch more attention than news videos. The findings of the present study indicate that drivers with high automation trust are more likely to be involved in non-driving-related visual tasks.

Abstract:
Abstract Public service, ethics, objectivity, autonomy and immediacy are still often considered the core values of professional journalism. However, photojournalistic work has confronted historic changes since the advent of digitalization in the late 1980s. Professional photo-journalists have been caught manipulating news images, video production has become a major part of news photographers’ work, and newspapers freely publish photographs and videos taken by the general public. The present article examines how news photographers negotiate these changes in photo-journalistic work practices, and how they define their professional ambitions in the digital age. Photojournalists’ articulations of professionalism are approached in relation to three digital innovations in photojournalism: digital photo editing, video production and user-generated images in newspapers. The empirical data consist of an online survey of and interviews with photojournalists in Finland. In the final analysis, it is suggested that the core ideals of photojournalism have to be renegotiated, because the work environment has changed drastically.

Abstract:
This article explores the influence of social media giant Facebook on the journalistic field by examining how news organizations responded to Facebook’s algorithm tweak, announced in June 2014, that prioritized videos directly uploaded to the social media platform. In announcing the tweak, Facebook, an agent external to the journalistic field, did not just change its own internal rules but also imposed them on users, including news organizations traditionally governed by the journalistic field’s own set of rules. Based on large-scale posting activity data collected from 232 Facebook Pages operated by major news organizations in the United States, this study found that most news organizations complied with Facebook’s updated rules on Native Videos by significantly increasing their social video production, opening up the journalistic field to the influence of an agent external to journalism. But while digital-native and broadcast news publishers were more responsive in adapting to the tweak, print brands were slower to respond.

Abstract:
Background: YouTube can be a powerful educational tool for the dissemination of health information. However, if uploaded health-related videos are inaccurate, it can mislead, create confusion and generate panic. Aims: This study aimed to determine the success of the most-watched Turkish-language COVID-19 YouTube videos regarding information and guidance on the disease for the public. The secondary aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and quality of such video content. Methods: The study was conducted during May 2020 and analysed 133 videos. The length of the videos, the number of likes and dislikes, comments and views, how long they have been on YouTube, Medical Information and Content Index (MICI) Score, mDISCERN scores, global quality scores, and the source and target audiences of the videos were all determined. Results: The average MICI Scores of videos was 2.48±3.74 and the global quality scores was 1.27±0.64. When MICI Scores were compared between video sources, the scores of academic hospitals and government videos were significantly higher. The global quality scores of videos from news agencies and independent users was significantly lower ( < 0.001). The mDISCERN score of the videos uploaded by news agencies and categorized as useful was higher than the others (P < 0.001). Among the targeted videos, only the global quality scores of the videos made for health-care workers were found to be significantly higher. Conclusion: Health-care professionals should upload more videos to improve the quality of health-related video content available on YouTube. Accompanied by evidence-based information, the issues of diagnosis, ways of transmission, prevention and treatment of diseases should be emphasized

Abstract:
The traditional graph-based personal recommendation algorithms mainly depend the user-item model to construct a bipartite graph. However, the traditional algorithms have low efficiency, because the matrix of the algorithms is sparse and it cost lots of time to compute the similarity between users or items. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved video recommendation algorithm based on hyperlink-graph model. This method cannot only improve the accuracy of the recommendation algorithms, but also reduce the running time. Furthermore, the Internet users may have different interests, for example, a user interest in watching news videos, and at the same time he or she also enjoy watching economic and sports videos. This paper proposes a complement algorithm based on hyperlink-graph for video recommendations. This algorithm improves the accuracy of video recommendations by cross clustering in user layers.

Abstract:
This article examines the role that the global television news agencies play in the handling of user generated content (UGC) video from Syria. In the almost complete absence of independent journalists, Reuters, Associated Press and Agence France-Presse are sourcing citizen videos from YouTube channels and passing it on to their clients. This article examines the verification processes that the agencies undertake to check on the veracity of this material and asks whether the agencies have abandoned independent journalism to activists. This article provides a comparative analysis of two months’ worth of UGC videos from Syria that were broadcast by the global news agencies after Russia joined the bombing campaign in Syria in late 2015. It analyses the content, verification processes and information that the agencies give their clients about this material. Through interviews with senior editors from the three organisations, questions of certainty versus probability are explored, along with ethical arguments about propaganda versus information transparency. The global news agencies are the engine drivers of international news coverage and their decisions and interpretation feed directly into the media ecology of mainstream and then alternative media.

Abstract:
In this paper, as a tool for structuring a large volume of archived news videos according to their semantic contents, we propose a method that effectively detects scene duplicates, assuming the presence of a person speaking in the videos. A scene duplicate is defined here as a pair of video segments taken at the same event from different viewpoints. When considering scenes where a subject is speaking in news videos, referring to the audio channel could be effective to detect scene duplicates regardless of viewpoints. However, it cannot be relied on when external audio sources overlap the original one or when the subject is actually not speaking. In contrast, the image channel can be useful in most cases. However, significant difference in viewpoints could prevent accurate detection. Therefore, we propose a method that combines the results obtained from both audio and image channels in order to improve the accuracy of scene duplicate detection from news videos. The proposed method was evaluated through an experiment with actual broadcast news videos by comparing it with a conventional method. As a result, we confirmed that the detection accuracy significantly improved by the proposed method in both recall and precision.

Abstract:
While video content is often stored in rather large files or broadcasted in continuous streams, users are often interested in retrieving only a particular passage on a topic of interest to them. It is, therefore, necessary to split video documents or streams into shorter segments corresponding to appropriate retrieval units. We propose here a method for the automatic segmentation of TV news videos into stories. A-multiple-descriptor based segmentation approach is proposed. The selected multimodal features are complementary and give good insights about story boundaries. Once extracted, these features are expanded with a local temporal context and combined by an early fusion process. The story boundaries are then predicted using machine learning techniques. We investigate the system by experiments conducted using TRECVID 2003 data and protocol of the story boundary detection task, and we show that the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods while requiring a very small amount of manual annotation.

Abstract:
As “mukbang” (eating broadcast) becomes increasingly widespread, there is growing interest about the impact of mukbang on public health. This study aimed to analyze the content of mukbang YouTube videos, as well as news articles related to mukbang and the association between watching mukbang videos and health habits. We analyzed 5952 YouTube mukbang videos, 5265 news articles, and a survey of 1200 people in Korea. In this study, we confirmed that the provocative content of mukbang YouTube videos, such as overeating, was related to video popularity (p < 0.001). In addition, more exposure to mukbang was associated with greater effects on dietary health due to mukbang (p < 0.001). The prevalence of news articles on the negative effects of mukbang showed an increasing trend over time, while the articles on “Mukbang is funny” were most common in all the years evaluated. To cope with public health problems such as obesity, it will be necessary to continue to investigate the content and effects of mukbang on public health.

Abstract:
Abstract Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, TikTok, an emerging social media platform, has created an information hub to provide users with engaging and authoritative COVID-19 information. This study investigates the video format, type and content of the COVID-19 TikTok videos, and how those video attributes are related to quantitative indicators of user engagement, including numbers of views, likes, comments and shares. A content analysis examined 331 videos from official accounts featured in the COVID-19 information hub. As of 5 May 2020, the videos received 907 930 000 views, 29 640 000 likes, 168 880 comments and 781 862 shares. About one in three videos had subtitles, which were positively related to the number of shares. Almost every video included a hashtag, and a higher number of hashtags was related to more likes. Video types included acting, animated infographic, documentary, news, oral speech, pictorial slideshow and TikTok dance. Dance videos had the most shares. Video themes included anti-stigma/anti-rumor, disease knowledge, encouragement, personal precautions, recognition, societal crisis management and work report. Videos conveying alarm/concern emotions, COVID-19 susceptibility and severity, precaution response efficacy had higher user engagement. Public health agencies should be aware of the opportunity of TikTok in health communication and create audience-centered risk communication to engage and inform community members.
