Full textThe purpose of this study is to examine critically the phenomenon of participatory video and to situate within this the participatory video project that was initiated as part of this study in the informal settlement area of Kayamandi, South Africa. The overall objective of the dissertation is to consider the potential of participatory video within current-day South Africa towards enabling marginalised groups to represent themselves and achieve social change. As will be shown, the term ‘participatory video’ has been used broadly and applied to many different types of video products and processes. For the preliminary purposes of this dissertation, participatory video is defined as any video (or film) process dedicated to achieving change through which the subject(s) has been an integral part of the planning and/or production, as well as a primary end-user or target audience. The two key elements that distinguish participatory video are thus (1) understanding video (or film) as a tool for social change; and (2) understanding participation by the subject as integral to the video process. An historical analysis thus considers various filmmaking developments that fed into the emergence of participatory video. These include various film practices that used film as a tool for change -- from soviet agitprop through to the documentary movement of the 1930s, as well as various types of filmmaking in the 1960s that opened up questions of participation. The Fogo process, developed in the late 1960s, marked the start of participatory video and video advocacy and provided guiding principles for the Kayamandi project initiated as part of this dissertation. Practitioners of the Fogo process helped initiate participatory video practice in South Africa when they brought the process to South African anti-apartheid activists in the early 1970s. The Kayamandi Participatory Video Project draws on this background and context in its planned methodology and its implementation. Out of this, various theoretical issues arising from participatory video practice contextualise a reflection and an analysis of the Kayamandi project. Lastly, this study draws conclusions and recommendations on participatory video practice in South Africa.

Abstract: The presented research investigates methodologies of audiovisual production in schools through the analysis of five videos produced by Hight School students. The detailed exposition of the methods used in each of these videos, besides their analysis and discussion of bibliographical references, brings interesting possibilities regarding the role of audiovisual resources in the teach-learn process. The results show, also, that the practical experience and the constant option for these teaching strategies, inserted in the regular content program of the matters, inducted a technical and esthetical development through the years the methodology was used. Brésil, Brazil, the first production experience in 2003, contributed in a very important way to improve the sequent productions, year by year, until reaching the last production (ECCReporter - a TV show 40min long), a long and intense work that counted with 100% of the students in the pre-production, production and post production. Among innumerous questions analyzed throughout this research, the following could be highlighted: the positive and negative aspects of each work; the registration and analysis of the productions' backstage; the audiovisual language and the written language; the production processes reports; the analysis of the projects' results. Through this research, it's intended not only the contribution around the video production experiences in classrooms; but also, and beyond all, to achieve a broader perspective through the reflection on the suggested methodologies as a way to make viable, in more spaces and with more students, the audiovisual teaching process. In this study, the objective was to raise the image issue in education not only as a methodological matter, but also as a knowledge and cultural matter, trying to articulate the relations between image and knowledge. It's intended to show that its presence in school is viable and for its specific contours, it's necessary to create an investigation process that extracts from a report and from an objective analysis of the videos, skills, methods and categories concerning the image and sounds languages' relationship with education

Full textThis research deals with the practice of making videos at the Colégio Estadual Professora Ottília Homero da Silva, in Pinhais city, in the metropolitan region of Curitiba, differentiating what you can see from the comparison between two different genres: one, a experimental video-fiction, another, a institutional video-documentary. It addresses the production of videos at a public school, based on studies of culture and art and technology as a collective action, with emphasis on the teaching-learning processes. This research study focuses on the practice of making videos by a group of students at a public school, with the goal of finding some evidence of the implications generated by such practice as a symbolic construction and disruption of daily life imposed by certain situations, as a complex act cultural and process. Why do these people make videos over there? How this practice occurs in theses circumstances? How we give this process of building cultural symbolic? The evidence founded included the search for social integration, and extension of critical reflection, when people involved in the practice began to question their positions in the construction of their identities.
