Abstract:
This chapter gives a brief overview of research methods using video material, lead by the question how these manage the ambiguity lying in interaction regarding this footage. The argument is put forward that, from a perspective of symbolic interactionism, in order to adequately make assertions regarding video material it is necessary to use video itself as a key statement in scientific discourse.

Griffiths, David John. "Developmemt of High Speed High Dynamic Range Videography." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/74990.

Full text
Abstract:
High speed video has been a significant tool for unraveling the quantitative and qualitative assessment of phenomena that is too fast to readily observe. It was first used in 1852 by William Henry Fox Talbot to settle a dispute with reference to the synchronous position of a horse's hooves while galloping. Since that time private industry, government, and enthusiasts have been measuring dynamic scenarios with high speed video. One challenge that faces the high speed video community is the dynamic range of the sensors. The dynamic range of the sensor is constrained to the bit depth of the analog to digital converter, the deep well capacity of the sensor site, and baseline noise. A typical high speed camera can span a 60 dB dynamic range, 1000:1, natively. More recently the dynamic range has been extended to about 80 dB utilizing different pixel acquisition methods. In this dissertation a method to extend the dynamic range will be presented and demonstrated to extend the dynamic range of a high speed camera system to over 170 dB, about 31,000,000:1. The proposed formation methodology is adaptable to any camera combination, and almost any needed dynamic range. The dramatic increase in the dynamic range is made possible through an adaptation of the current high dynamic range image formation methodologies. Due to the high cost of a high speed camera, a minimum number of cameras are desired to form a high dynamic range high speed video system. With a reduced number of cameras spanning a significant range, the errors on the formation process compound significantly relative to a normal high dynamic range image. The increase in uncertainty is created from the lack of relevant correlated information for final image formation, necessitating the development of a new formation methodology. In the proceeding text the problem statement and background information will be reviewed in depth. The development of a new weighting function, stochastic image formation process, tone map methodology, and optimized multi camera design will be presented. The proposed methodologies' effectiveness will be compared to current methods throughout the text and a final demonstration will be presented.

Shoemaker, James A. "Use of Multispectral Aerial Videography for Jurisdictional Delineation of Wetland Areas." DigitalCommons@USU, 1994. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/6500.

Full text
Abstract:
Multispectral aerial videography was used to reproduce the jurisdictional delineation of wetland area of approximately 50 hectares in Davis County, Utah Imagery from the system consisted of three-band composite with wavelengths covering 550 nm (±10 nm), 650 nm (±10 nm), and 850 nm (±10 nm). The site was overflown at three different flight dates during the 1992 growing season (June 2, July 22, October 1). Imagery resolution varied from 0.56 m to 0.81 m. Mosaiced images were analyzed with a Supervised clustering/maximum likelihood classifier, ISODATA clustering/Euclidan classifier, statistical clustering/maximum likelihood classifier, and fuzzy c-means clustering. Overall accuracies for wetland/upland designations as compared to ground truth data varied from 60% to 75%. The ISODATA method was the poorest performer for all dates and both of two accuracy testing techniques. Supervised clustering and statistical clustering were comparable with a slight edge in accuracy to the supervised clustering. The best all-round performer was the fuzzy c-means algorithm in terms of time spent and accuracy.

Abstract:
Camera trapping, a process in which images of organisms are captured through the use of motion and or infrared sensor cameras, is frequently used within the field of biology to estimate species density through the capture-recapture method. Classic physics models of density based on the ideal gas constant, however, can be used to estimate the density of an animal population without the need for recognition of individuals. This study adapts one of these models (Rowclife et al. 2008) to the unique data recorded through automated videography or video trapping, and uses it to estimate the population densities of three relatively abundant species on the Firestone Reserve in Costa Rica: Collard Peccaries, Central American Agoutis, and White-tailed Deer. Collard peccaries were found to have a density of 4.93 individuals/km2, Central American Agoutis were found to have a density of 1.01 individuals/km2, and white-tailed deer were found to have a density of 0.50 individuals/km2. The knowledge of species densities can be extremely useful in the context of a reserve. Changes in these estimates can serve as indicators of consequences from poaching, pollution, or climate change, and monitoring them could be very beneficial to the Firestone Reserve.

Abstract:
This study evaluated the ability of individual subjects and small groups to correctly identify Arizona plant communities from color airvideo footage, explored the relationship of five background variables to subjects' success, and determined which community types were easiest and most difficult for subjects to identify. Forty-six volunteers from the University of Arizona School of Renewable Natural Resources participated in a multiple-choice pretest-posttest experiment using 30 different plant communities depicted in one-minute segments of videotape. Three hours of training increased mean individual score from 7 correct (pretest) to 21 correct (posttest), and mean group score from 11 to 24. All respondents significantly improved their performance, regardless of background. Posttest results showed no significant difference in ability among individuals or between individuals and groups. The most difficult community to identify was creosote-tarbush desertscrub; the easiest was paloverde-saguaro desertscrub. Findings support the feasibility of video interpretation by minimally-trained personnel.

Kendall, Marshall. "Calculation of the residual error in three-dimensional videography using stationary, panning and mobile video capturing techniques." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/26499.

Full text
Abstract:
Significant technological advancements have been made in the study of human motion over the past few decades. There are three known video capturing techniques for collecting three-dimensional kinematic data; stationary, panning and mobile camera set-ups. The panning and mobile camera techniques allow for the cameras to follow a subject throughout the entire length of the skill while maintain a close-range view of the subject, something the stationary camera set-up does not allow. Accuracy of the panning and mobile camera techniques has not yet been well documented. The main objective of this study is to determine root mean square (RMS) errors of three-dimensional coordinates in a 5.5-meter filming volume using stationary, panning and mobile camera techniques using three specific testing conditions. Although the three camera techniques showed acceptable residual errors throughout the three testing conditions, the mobile technique produced the lowest RMS error for the two out of the three test condition. For the panning and mobile camera set-ups, camera-to-subject distance is much smaller than the static camera technique for a 5.5-meter field. Lamontagne et al reported that residual errors could be minimized when camera-to-subject distance is reduced. The mobile technique produced acceptable accuracy in video analysis (Lafontaine et al., 2000). This technique did reduce the residual errors, of positional coordinates of markers and the vectors length measurements; by 55% and 44% in the gait testing condition respectively from errors obtained using the stationary camera technique. This study allowed for a comparison of three video capturing techniques abilities to collect accurate data over a large filming area. The results show that, although all three camera set-ups produce low residual errors, the mobile camera set-up offers the best accuracy while maintaining a small camera-to-subject distance, allowing for close range studies to be performed successfully.

Liu, Yanhe. "Human oocytes and embryos viewed by time-lapse videography, and the development of an embryo deselection model." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2016. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/1787.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite its wide application today, in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment continues to have relatively low efficacy, largely due to inaccuracy in selecting the best quality embryo(s) from the cohort for transfer. Novel methodologies for improved selection are being developed, and time-lapse observation of human embryos is gaining increasing popularity due to the more detailed morphokinetic information obtained plus uninterrupted culture conditions. The morphokinetic information enables the use of quantitative timings in developmental milestones of embryos and qualitative measures of abnormal biological events, to assist embryo selection/deselection. This project aimed to identify current limitations in the use of such measures and to develop recommendations for improvement in clinical application. In the current study, most data were collected retrospectively from infertile couples seeking IVF treatment at a fertility clinic, with consent to use time-lapse incubation (Embryoscope) for embryo culture. Comparisons of time-lapse measures were made between embryos with confirmed implantation and non-implantation outcomes following uterine transfers. Thereafter, an embryo deselection model was proposed based on the retrospective findings, followed by prospective validation. It was found in the current study that the reference starting time point (t0) in certain existing time-lapse systems was inaccurate due to (i) the early biological variations between sibling oocytes, (ii) technical limitations in current equipment and protocols, and (iii) different insemination methods used (Papers 1&2). The above variations may be minimized by using pronuclear fading (PNF, a biological time point) as t0 rather than insemination (a procedural time point) (Paper 2). An example of such application was the comparison of embryo development between patients with high and low serum progesterone levels on the trigger-day (Paper 3). Furthermore, the growth rate of embryos reported in the literature is subject to multiple clinical or laboratory factors, and this was in agreement with the present study where a published time-lapse algorithm emphasizing quantitative timing parameters was shown to lose its discriminatory power in implantation prediction when applied in two different laboratories (Paper 4). Interestingly, the qualitative measures seemed to have better inter-laboratory transferability due to the embryo growth patterns appearing independent of clinical and technical factors (Paper 4). Two novel qualitative measures were reported in the present study, namely reverse cleavage and less than 6 intercellular contact points at the end of the 4-cell stage, showing negative correlations with embryo implantation outcomes (Papers 5&6). A qualitative embryo deselection model was therefore proposed, including several qualitative measures with implantation rates being potentially increased from 22.4% to 33.6% (Paper 6). Finally, an embryo deselection model combining both qualitative and quantitative measures was reported with the use of PNF as t0, showing significant prediction of implantation outcomes in embryos regardless of insemination method (Paper 7). In conclusion, this thesis demonstrates the usefulness of time-lapse embryo selection during IVF treatment in one specific laboratory. However, any new time-lapse parameter or model for embryo selection requires external validation by properly designed large-scale studies. Future clinical research and the development of integrated engineering and computer technology may further improve the efficacy of time-lapse selection of human embryos.

Abstract:
There has been great interest in the use of small robotic helicopter vehicles over the last few years. Although there are regulatory issues involved in flying these that are still to be solved, they have the potential to provide a practical mobile aerial platform for a small fraction of the cost of a conventional manned helicopter. One potential class of applications for these is in searching for people, and this thesis explores a new generation of cameras which are suitable for this purpose. We propose HeatTrack, a novel algorithm to detect and track people in aerial imagery taken from a combined infrared/visible camera rig. A Local Binary Patterns (LBP) detector finds silhouettes in the infrared image which are used guide the search in the visible light image, and a Kalman filter combines information from both modalities in order to track a person more accurately than if only a single modality were available. We introduce a method for matching the thermal signature of a person to their corresponding patch in the visible modality, and show that this is more accurate than traditional homography-based matching. Furthermore, we propose a method for cancelling out camera motion which allows us to estimate a velocity for the person, and this helps in determining the location of a person in subsequent frames. HeatTrack demonstrates several advantages over tracking in the visible domain only, particularly in cases where the person shows up clearly in infrared. By narrowing down the search to the warmer parts of a scene, the detection of a person is faster than if the whole image were searched. The use of two imaging modalities instead of one makes the system more robust to occlusion; this, in combination with estimation of the velocity of a person, enables tracking even when information is lacking in either modality. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first published algorithm for tracking people in aerial imagery using a combined infrared/visible camera setup.

Abstract:
The aerial videography is a technique that has been used in the USA to evaluate, detect and prevent agricultural problems, as well as in the handling of natural areas. One of the reasons for the employment of this technique is its low cost for obtaining the images and the speed with that they can be captured, processed and analyzed. The aim of this work was to verify the usefulness of the videography technique in detecting nutritional deficiency in eucalyptus plantations, using it as a tool in the nutritional monitoring, turning it more precise and less costly than the methods used at present. For this, an experiment was settled with treatments of subtraction of nutrients with the purpose of verifying the potentiality of the aerial videography as technique to distinguish the treatments with nutritional deficiency in eucalyptus plantation. Images were obtained in the green, blue, red and infrared close spectrum, after 12 months of plantation. Those images were obtained with two cameras S-VHS: one capable of capturing the bands of the visible spectrum (400 - 700 nm) and other capable of capturing the bands in the visible and near infrared band (400 - 1100 nm). In these cameras, subtraction filters were also used to separate the bands of the spectrum to work. Besides, with the use of the software ENVI, it was made an analysis of the values of pixels of each portion, being obtained the minimum, medium, maximum values and the mean standard deviation. Then, these values were compared to each other and put together according to the multivariate statistical analysis, looking for relationships between the data of the images and the treatments. Significant relationships between the tree and pixel values data were found for the images obtained in 1500 m high by the camera COHU, in the spectra blue and close infrared and for the camera PANASONIC, in the red band.

Vertical aerial videography is a commonly technique used by geologists and researchers from several fields of knowledge. Aerial videography of low altitude, in oblique viewing, is a resource not spread, but very accessible, by the quality of digital equipment available, by capacity and facility of software and hardware operation and by the low cost of flight hour in small planes. The terrain observation (imaging) and oblique visualization of landscape in TV language allow building data base, to promote discrimination of surface landforms and morphologic patterns with tectonic meanings, and supply an approach that supplement the information derived from other media. In this work the goal was to apply this technique of data register in low cost and complexity of data treatment, test its aptitude to compose the didactic material and transmit specific information from geological interest.

Abstract:
Invasive species, such as the red lionfish, Pterois volitans, are damaging many ecosystems around the world by out-competing native species. However, little work has been done to determine if P. volitans have a direct influence on the feeding performance of native species with which they compete. This study examines the feeding performance in terms of suction pressure, kinematic timing, and excursion distances of spotted scorpionfish, Scorpaena plumieri. Through multiple trials it was examined how S. plumieri modulate their kinematic behavior in response to P. volitans and a conspecific. The creation of a smaller buccal cavity and a decrease in time of buccal expansion may allow individuals to create greater sub-ambient pressures to increase their prey-capture success. High-speed cinematography and pressure transducers were used to determine if S. plumieri modulate feeding performance in the presence of either P. volitans or a conspecific. The results of the study suggest that S. plumieri do not create larger subambient pressures or modulate their feeding kinematics in the presence of P. volitans or a conspecific.

Abstract: Vertical aerial videography is a commonly technique used by geologists and researchers from several fields of knowledge.

Abstract:
The article constitutes an approach on music education, which takes its starting point from a question: Does music appear in music lessons and how, assuming the phenomenon music appears in fulfilling praxis only. Fulfilling praxis is defined as a meaningful constellation of different characteristics, such as the attitude of perception, the topic, the ways of action, interaction and communication of the participating people. The introduction leads from observations in school settings to the keypoints of music didactics, focusing on three different scientific parts of the related issues. Part one portrays “praxis” as the key issue connecting different theories ranging from epistemology to videography. Part two and three depict aesthetical praxis as general form and culture-related meaning as specification of fulfilling musical praxis. Two times four criteria identify aesthetical and cultural aspects of fulfilling musical praxis in the classroom (=SchoolMusic) and are illustrated by the joint music lessons on DVD, which are appended to the book. While the main emphasis of the article is descriptive and does not aim for normative purposes, an excursus drafts a model of music education called “Experiencing and comparing different kinds of musical praxis”

Abstract:
This dissertation is an exploratory analysis of fanatic consumption. This is set within the framework of Consumer Culture Theory (CCT), analyzing other relevant themes, such as experience consumption, symbolic distinction and the development of identities and communities. As a locus of study, the environment of genre film festival was chosen, aiming at studying individuals that have a high involvement with their consumption object, through their own point of view. The main goal of this dissertation is to analyze if these festivals exert influence on the identity(ies) of their attendees and if they are responsible for the development of communities of consumption. The empirical study consisted in the incursion in two research fields (Fantastic Fest, Austin, USA, on 2010 and Fantaspoa, Porto Alegre, Brasil, on 2012). Two participant observations were made, as well as 60 filmed interviews in the two events. The interviews were used to create a videography and they were also transcribed for the analysis of results. The transcribed content was codified and separated in items. The coding techniques were used to generate concepts based on the data, aiming at analyzing their content with academic rigor. The framing of this dissertation on the interpretativist paradigm aimed at understanding the complexity of the social phenomenon in a integrated way, being based on the meanings attributed by the festival’s attendees and their social and cultural relationships established on the field of research. It is noteworthy that the most assiduous attendees create what might be called of “identity-for-the-festival”. Such events not only cause influence on the development of the identities of its consumers, but also assist on the development of strong emotional bonds among them. It was confirmed that the majority of the attendees might be considered a fan, because they transform their festival attendance in a cultural activity, sharing thoughts and feelings and becoming a member of a community, in which there is a strong feeling of acceptance and belongingness. It was verified that this interaction, within time, generate contacts that enhance the interest and the knowledge of the attendees, developing relationships that might become communities of consumption.

Abstract:
This paper goal was to analyze urban forestry in the city of Águas de São Pedro-SP, aiming to obtain important information that allows planning of a city with better environmental quality, more life quality to its inhabitants and more attractive to the tourists. Firstly, it was quantified inhabitants opinion about city urban forestry and environment. To do so, 330 people were interviewed. Most of the people cited the need of improvements in the parks, squares and city urban forestry but also pointed out environmental problems in the city. It is clear the necessity of a management plan that takes into account public opinion and technical factors. Secondly, it was analyzed the city conception and formation history and levantadas the current conditions of squares, parks, open spaces and permanent protection areas. The results were the following: a) the city has only two squares but only one is used by the population; b) about parks, one of them is private and the other three are public. From the public ones, one is highly frequented and the other two are underused. Some changes in the parks are suggested to increase the number of visitors; c) about open spaces, despite the fact the city has two dedicated areas for public events, the population complains about the few choices for entertainment in these places. The city has another five open spaces, designed in the so called garden-city urbanization project, but none of them has any landscaping treatment. Most of them is abandoned, but one is appropriate to install a park meant for children recreation, hardly wished by the population, and d) about permanent protection areas, are found in bad shape and abandoned, needing urgent actions, from reforesting to wastewater treatment. It can be stated that only a good urban project does not guarantee life and environment quality to the population, being necessary a continuous urban environment planning that includes conception, implementation, maintenance and management. Thirdly, it was used high resolution multispectra air videography, obtaining the open spaces area, trees canopy, among others. This technique was adequate to distinguish between different targets urban and to show that the city has open spaces designed in the garden-city concept that are not used. This leads to environmental, life quality and touristy potential losses. The city does not have an Environment Department, thus reinforcing the need to create one with actions towards the construction of parks, open spaces reformulation, trees planting in certain areas, reforesting, effluent treatment, waste recycling and elimination/reduction of sound, air, water and visual pollution.

Abstract:
Video-recorded music lessons (on multi angle DVDs) were used to inspire and improve understanding among experts from different cultures and discourses of music education. To make the process manageable and focused we developed the Analytical Short Film (2-3 minutes) to address particular areas of interest and starting points for debate. We asked selected music teachers from seven nation-states to allow a typical and (in their opinion) good lesson to be recorded. We also asked the students and their parents for permission. At a symposium, national experts and researchers presented views on „their“ lessons through Analytical Short Films. Discussion included implicit and explicit comparisons. The presenters also used a lesson from one of the other countries to stimulate discussion about assumptions in and challenges to their own views. We documented all comparisons made and compared these to derive cross cultural categories (tertia comparationis). These categories should be relevant for understanding what makes a music lesson „good“. The different perspectives and discussions offered by the authors in this book provide rich and diverse material for researchers, teachers and teacher educators.

Abstract:
There is currently no effective tool available to quickly and economically measure a change in landmass in the setting of biomedical professionals and environmental specialists. The purpose of this study is to structure and demonstrate a statistical change-detection method using remotely sensed data that can detect the presence of an infectious land borne disease. Data sources included the Texas Department of Health database, which provided the types of infectious land borne diseases and indicated the geographical area to study. Methods of data collection included the gathering of images produced by digital orthophoto quadrangle and aerial videography and Landsat. Also, a method was developed to identify statistically the severity of changes of the landmass over a three-year period. Data analysis included using a unique statistical detection procedure to measure the severity of change in landmass when a disease was not present and when the disease was present. The statistical detection method was applied to two different remotely sensed platform types and again to two like remotely sensed platform types. The results indicated that when the statistical change detection method was used for two different types of remote sensing mediums (i.e.-digital orthophoto quadrangle and aerial videography), the results were negative due to skewed and unreliable data. However, when two like remote sensing mediums were used (i.e.- videography to videography and Landsat to Landsat) the results were positive and the data were reliable.

Abstract:
Flight is a vital component of butterfly natural history, and flight-associated morphology is thought to be under strong selection for the performance of critical behaviors such as patrolling, courtship and oviposition. However, while different behaviors require different proportions of flapping versus gliding flight, few studies actually quantify butterfly flight behavior. Moreover, as butterfly flight is anteromotoric, no prior study has measured the role of hind wing allometry in flight. Using high-speed videography, this study compares the flight of two species of Haeterini (Nymphalidae) that regularly employ gliding flight. We also employ stereo videography and experimental hind wing area reduction to measure the effects of hind wing allometry on flight. Results suggest that although the forewings are reliable predictors of flight in these two species, relative hind wing area can significantly affect gliding flight performance, and should be considered as a factor in future investigations on flight-associated morphology in butterflies.

The present research in visual arts has proposed to investigate, so practical and theoretical, the process of a series of poetic works, seeking to establish new relationships in order to propose a dialogue between language and means ceramic photographic and videography. We suggest the combination of digital resources as agents for trial between languages, materials, techniques and support of hybrid possibilities. From these choices, resize to the ways in different contexts of displacement: at first, in the studio pottery, in a second stage, in a meeting place - the existing Pottery Campus UFSM - seen as potential place-image, in a third time, it operates with the place of exposure and assemblages (interaction) in its surroundings. Such possibilities are experienced in all the poetic works, build relationships of proximity, specific conceptual and procedural and present intertwine in research, helping to contextualize the practice. Thus, the series production facilities Between Ball 1, 2 Between Spheres, Balls Between 3 and artistic proposals A Whole in Parts I, II and III proposed relationships, travels, crosses and associations, establishing new roads and contributing to the poetic research contemporary art.

Becoming a young woman amid the foothills and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains has fulfilled me with an awareness that I am not from "around these parts" that I now find myself in. As I navigated my way across the mountains, to the southern slopes of the east coast, I began to realize the life I was leaving behind through the process of photography, film, and the act of making a recording. This document speaks about the ideas and persistent energy that drive my process of creation while focusing on three important bodies of work that exhibit what I believe to be a method of engagement between the body and the camera. Out of my experiences, I want to make record of the blips and intonations, and of the in-between spaces where language is displaced and the visual speaks for itself.

Abstract:
This thesis explores what is not seen and yet what can be found in images: "the visibly missing". This expression points to the center of emotions in which signs seem to be organizing themselves and designating what is unseen, and nevertheless essential to the image, to the artist and to the viewer. Our working hypothesis defines this moment as prior to the creation of the image. It originates in the conscious mind through memories, dreams, obsessional thoughts, mental images which help maintain memory alive, as well as motor behaviors like the very act of perceiving, of anticipating our experience of reality, and the act of appreciating the presence of the image itself. The research is based on my fine art video practice, as well as photographic, cinematographic and video graphic works from contemporary artistic fields, and aims to analyze precisely their iconic, artistic and semantic ranges. It also establishes links between what is seen, what is felt behind the vision, and what is named. Finally, it outlines an "aesthetics of the fainting": a deliberate fainting, expressing a fragility that the viewer's eye recognizes as such by the paradoxical proximity with its own vulnerabity

Abstract:
A lesson in the light of different theories: experts on music education from German universities observe a typical music lesson and use it to explain their positions. This shows us a range of perspectives on music education which can be related to one another through the shared example, thus creating a map of current musical education theories. That was the original idea. At the centre of the Leipzig conference were three well-documented music lessons from different parts of Germany, which twelve educationalists referred to. They were able to observe each lesson from three different camera perspectives, and there were also guiding interviews with both teachers and learners. After every four presentations the speakers met in fishbowl discussions which were open to the audience. Abridged versions of these discussions are included alongside the essays. The DVDs of the lessons, sample excerpts from the speakers, and transcriptions of the interviews accompany the volume.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a methodology of geo-referenced mobile video-mapping from the development of prototypes that use a Geovisualization Multimedia Interface to synchronize the record (on video) of a place or event of interest to the route traveled by the inspection vehicle (on map or image), by collecting data from mobile sensors: digital camera, microphone, GNSS receiver and digital compass. The interface allows the integration of these sensors with existing digital maps available in web services. Systems such as this significantly improves the temporal analysis, management and decision making. The interface proposed and developed in this study is useful for many applications such as monitoring and inventory tool. This interface can be understood as the visual component of a mobile mapping system or mapping system as an alternative or complement, for applications in which the geometric precision of the GNSS navigation receiver is sufficient and its accessibility, a competitive factor. Applications developed in this study were twofold: a monitoring system and inventory road sign posts and a monitoring system of flood / drought and inventory of properties on the edge of hydroelectric reservoirs, both in full operation.

Abstract:
The present study aims at gathering a higher comprehension about the motivation of collector behavior, using as study subjects the vinyl record collectors of Porto Alegre. The central question of this research can be defined as: What are the causes that motivate vinyl record consumption? The study importance is justified due to the fact that there are gaps to be filled in the studies of collector behavior as well as in nostalgic tendencies influencing consumption. Above all, a collector is a consumer, is based on this premise this study was developed. Such choice is due to the fact that this product is a specialty product, which differs itself from a common product by a series of characteristics (HOYER E MACINNIS, 1997) and also due to the “personal meaning” (SCHIFFMAN E KANUK, 2000) that the consumer attributes to this kind of product, creating an object of study more pertinent and richer in information. The kind of collection chosen allows also the approach of studies on nostalgic consumer behavior. It is believed that the results of this research are pertinent due to the subjects interviewed: heavy-users and expert dealers, besides the use of a multimethodological approach, which allows that the joint results gathered to be more comprehensive (ELALI, 1997). The different stages accomplished: simple observation, recorded in-depth interviews, including the usage of critical incident technique, editing and finishing of the videography allows to develop inferences on the sample analyzed. The results indicate that some collectors really seem to be out of the time and the reality which surrounds them. They do not live the daily rush of the modern world, instead, they enjoy their spare time to dedicate to their favorite records. Most collectors posses a nostalgic feeling to their records, but, above all, the felling of involvement created with the passage of the years between the collectors and the collection is something unsolvable. In any moment of their lives the collection can be seen as a safe harbor, which perhaps cannot be found in any other object or even in a person. Moreover, they are persons whom love this objects with fervor and that found in them an extension of their personality.

This dissertation aims to provide an improved understanding of the social consumer movement of vegetarians and vegans, while it summarizes the results of three studies that, taken together, fulfill the twin objectives of analyzing the revolution in videography and analyzing marketplace exclusion. In the first study, the central role of marketplace exclusion in the social consumer movement of vegetarianism in the city of São Paulo is discussed, and the commitment of vegetarians based on their individualized forms of participation and their focus on cultural change is described. The second study of this dissertation discusses the technique of videography and its application to the practice of academic and market research, presenting a protocol that summarizes the rich and detailed understanding of this method in practice. The third study is an example of a published videography that uses realistic conflict theory to observe how different types of people connected with vegetarianism and veganism deal with conflicts within and outside the movement and how these conflicts affects market dynamics. The data are based on 12 months of ethnographic immersion fieldwork that involved visits to 18 vegetarian events, five public demonstrations on the street, and regular visits to five different vegan restaurants, in order to observe and talk to vegetarians and vegans on-site. Extended interviews were conducted with 6 ovo-lacto vegetarians and 27 vegans. The paper concludes with a discussion of the main theoretical contributions, managerial implications, implications for public policy, and limitations and suggestions for further research.

Abstract:
This dissertation critically engages the meaning and scope of the category of the 'essay film'; a term that has gained increasing currency in recent decades in film studies and contemporary art to group a diverse array of moving-image works. Departing from recent literature on the essay film, the essay, as I argue, should be conceived less as a stable generic category, than as a dynamic form and experimental mode of writing and filmmaking, which employs and cuts across diverse literary, cinematic and televisual genres and sub-genres, and which is historically subject to critical transformation as it encounters new social, technological and cultural forms and mediums. The introduction provides a critical survey of some of the leading proponents of the essay film, and outlines a working definition of the essay as a literary and cinematographic form. Chapter 1 examines the history of the essay and criticism as a literary and philosophical form, focusing on the essayistic and critical writings of Michel de Montaigne, the early German Romantics, Walter Benjamin, Theodor W. Adorno and Roland Barthes. Central to the critical and experimental nature of the essay, as the chapter underlines, is the deployment of various indirect, allegorical, and modernist rhetorical and poetic strategies and devices - such as citation, irony, fragmentation, and parataxis - which attempt to engage the reader in the text's reflective process through the constellation of enigmatic and disjunct moments and perspectives. Chapter 2 explores the emergence of various essayistic forms in the Soviet avant-garde in the 1920s, relating debates around the privileging of literary and photographic documentary montage practices in Soviet Factography to Esfir Shub's historical compilation films, Dziga Vertov's experimental newsreels, and Sergei Eisenstein's project to make a plotless film-essay based on Karl Marx's Capital. Chapter 3 focuses on Jean-Luc Godard's film and video essays - from Camera Eye (1967) to Histoire(s) du cinéma (1988-1998) - delineating the crucial shifts in Godard's various attempts to present a critical discourse on cinema and the media through the montage of image and sound. Chapter 4 investigates the essay films, archival video essays, and essayistic video installations of Harun Farocki, attending to how his works endeavour to render the ciphered social life of images and the historical transformations in technologies and techniques of seeing and imaging available for critical interpretation. Central to my account of the essay as a literary, cinematographic, and videographic form is the question of compilation; namely, how (from Montaigne to Farocki) knowledge and history (whether in the form of text or image) is archived and assembled through the juxtaposition and critical weighing of disparate citations and images. Paramount in relation to Godard and Farocki, as I underscore, is their respective shifts to working with video technology, which afforded both filmmakers the capacity to more freely combine and analyze images from divergent media sources, as well as to devise novel forms of videographic montage based on the construction of historical correspondences between audio-visual elements. I conclude the dissertation with a consideration of the impact of digital technology on contemporary essayistic audio-visual practices, and how issues raised in the preceding chapters - around audio-visual criticism, the spatialization of montage in moving-image installation work, and documentary and archival film practices - have been affected by such technological and cultural shifts.

Abstract:
The dissertation deals with teacher expectations for student achievement. The first two studies investigate student characteristics teachers rely on when forming their achievement expectations. Study 3 investigates the associations of inaccurately high or low teacher expectations with their teaching behavior and students’ subsequent achievement development. The analyses are based on data from the longitudinal research project “competence acquisition and learning preconditions” in which 1065 students from 64 first grade classes participated in the school year 2013/2014. Study 1 revealed that teachers’ expectations for students’ language and mathematics achievement differed depending on students’ ethnic background, social background and gender. These differences partly persisted even after controlling for students’ actual achievement, general cognitive abilities and motivation, and therefore indicate biased expectations. The results of study 2 showed that social bias and gender bias in teacher expectations were partly due to differences in teachers’ perceptions of students’ motivation and learning behavior. Ethnic bias, however, appeared independent of these teacher perceptions. The results of study 3 support the assumption that inaccurately high or low teacher expectations may result in self-fulfilling prophecies and influence students’ achievement development as early as in the first school grade. The video study of study 3 further revealed that inaccurately high or low teacher expectations may result in different teacher feedback for the students. Teacher feedback, however, did not substantially mediate teacher expectancy effects on student achievement. The results of the present dissertation are of great relevance for educational practice. First, they highlight the advantages of high expectations and, second, they sensitize for biasing influences of student background characteristics.
