Full textAfter an introduction on Manet and his time, when various artistic movements coexisted, this thesis concerning Manet's painting as well as his graphic art, is composed of two parts, the first of which is devoted to the study of portraits, and the second to the representation of scenes of parisian life. The general conclusion concerns the evolution of Manet's style, shows the opposition between the french and anglo-saxon theories relating to his art and underlines that Manet was an objective witness of his time, and the first among great painters to represent parisian life and society in a new and modern fashion. Full textIn this work, we want to show the originality of the melodic language of Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880), from the analysis of his opera bouffe La Vie parisienne created in 1866 at the Palais-Royal Theater. The stylistic perspective however doesn't stop at the study of the melodic line, at the statement of features or idiomatic shapes but tends to take out a global net of significations. Text and music are considered simultaneously in a comparative poetics : we examine the concordances, the discordances or the conflicts between the verse and the melodic phrase. The former is replaced in its poetic and dramatic context - the strophe or a fixed form - and the latter is apprehended as a structure based on an harmonic teleology, on a cadential interaction between its two members. We get interested too in the rhythmic organisation of the verse, separated by the caesura into two hemistichs and in the motivic organisation of the melodic phrase, according the scheme pickup notes/accent/desinence. Our conclusions not only allow us to determine in which measure Offenbach was preoccupied by the prosodical and metrical problems but also to confront the working of the musical discourse with the one of the poetic discourse, in the particular context of La Vie parisienne and in general

Full textThe present study critically defines the concept of narrative theatricality, through the Scènes de la vie parisienne and the "cycle de Vautrin" (the Vautrin cycle). This includes to go into Balzac's modes of structuring the narrative, on the genetics of writing's point of view. Reader and member of the audience : here is the result of the treatment of space, which builds a theatrical perception of the narrative. Through his successive parts, the character reveals himself as an actor who supports the dramatic structure of the narrative. Also, the function of direction, which is given out to the characters, reflects the relationship between the creator and his creation. This function governs both the narrative composition and the drama structural logic. Besides, studying how the narrative has been written shows how the writing conditions the narrative theatricality. Thus, as the dramatic characteristics of Balzac's writing are demonstrated, his "mal écrire" reveals itself as a dramatic "bien écrire"
Aquatias, Sylvain. "En bas des barres : sociabilités et lien social des jeunes dans les cités de la banlieue parisienne." Paris 8, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998PA081446.
Full textThe present thesis deals with the social relationships young people living in suburban areas have between theym or with the other people they meet : others dwellers, dwellers of others residential areas or representatives of territorial or national institutions. Therefore, the purpose is not only to describe the sociabilities of the suburban young people but also to explain what binds theym to the global society through perceptions and actual experiences, and to describe the nature of the social bond which ties young people to others members of french society. The specific place suburban young people have in the social classification builded at the level of the global society governs their conceptions of their social relations. That place creates a "community of experience", a group of common practices and perceptions which unite the young people living the same experiences in the same category, empirically defined by the young people theymselves. Most of the data has come from investigations of about ten different sites and gathered from participatory observations. They have been completed by extensives interviews. More than one hundred people have been met in four years of fieldwork. The data allows one to understand how the social relationships of the young suburban people are organized, between children and parents, between girls and boys, between age-sets, in the groups of young people, between young people and others dwellers of the block, between young people and representatives of the departmental and national institutions like teachers, policemen and social workers, and how distances are created between groups and categories in the french society

Full textAt the bottom of housing projects in Montrimond, young men gather in building entrances and public places. In this small city located in the ring of suburbs, next to Paris, a few adolescents and young adults see themselves as the “guys from the hood”. The “guys from the Belvedere” and the “guys from the Val” wander around in the so-called “sensitive neighborhoods” the city hall has labeled as such. This thesis shed light upon the lived experience and the meanings of this juvenile affiliation. What does that mean to “be a guy from the hood” on a daily basis? On which everyday activities this affiliation relies on? How some boys come to be morally bound together? Initially, the thesis investigates the historical and ecological aspects in the genesis of the so-called “sensitive neighborhoods.” It shows how youth came to embody a social phobia that yields the residents to see them as outsiders. Then, this social fear is related to the narrative of foundation youth tells their own origin. Through the order of generation upon which they tell the history of their “hood”, anyone can be assigned to a place of either an “ancestor,” an “elder” or a “young.” Here we describe the networks of friendships that shape those generational gatherings. In the interstices of educational institutions of the city, like family, school and youth center, those “guys” cultivate an esprit de corps with its own moral standards. This esprit de corps is the touchstone upon which they give rise to a moral world that revolves around three ethical figures: the friend, the partner in crime (accomplice) and the enemy. Finally, the thesis unfolds the psychosociological dynamics entailed in the metamorphosis of commitment friends are engaged in while becoming deviant (drug dealing, robbery, stick-ups, etc.). In the context of deviant careers, friends cannot believe anymore in the sincerity of their alter ego. Facing the possibility of disloyalty, scam and snitch, they start doubting the honesty that was at the core of their mutual respect. In this distrust process, the ethical and emotional vulnerability undermines the faith in the future, engaging each other in a vicious circle of predicting the betrayal of the old friend. Some would go as far as killing a would-be enemy, others would be cruel in retaliation when certain would withdraw from violence to save their sense of humanity

Full textThe French XIXth Century assigned the theatre a foremost place, specially the comic genre. It became the vector for social and individual forceful trends. Hence, the death of a once famous actor enlightens him as well as those who survive him. Words and attendance to the burial display recollection and oblivion, the look put on an art and his artists placed until then under secular bias. The death ritual replace the dead among a cultural nebula very dense and show a man often exemplary of his century with his respectable way of life – a new look and position. The result of the actors’ thoughts and fight through professional associating, promotion of their art history, helped with the soar of the press. The journalists were often playwrights and part of the audience such the attraction for the drama was strong

Full textThis thesis examines how German-speaking musicians lived and worked in Parisian exile in the years 1933-193‘). As a musicological study indebted to the concepts of cultural history, the paper focuses on the possibilities of action and practices of exiled musicians and their French colleagues, as well as their ways of perceiving and generating sense in this situation. How did musicians approach the new musical spaces opening before them in the Parisian exile? How did they describe their Parisian exile and attribute meaning to it? How did the French musical world react to the arrival of their German-speaking colleagues? What part did music play in the rich cultural life of the Parisian exile‘? Drawing upon French archives hitherto virtually unexplored in this context, especially sources of police surveillance and cultural administration, as well as the French press, exile journals and contemporary recordings, this study analyses the musical exile in Paris by employing varied methodical approaches and perspectives, as proposed by the French concept of histoire croisée. Lt explores a mosaic of spaces of musical action spanning from Radio broadcasting to the theatres of operetta. Furthermore. It studies cultural crossings as the interrelation of amateur and professional musical life and the role of music in cultural organisations of the exiled community, as well as global characteristics of the field and individual biographies. Thus, the exile of musicians in Paris can be perceived in all its ambivalence: Including creativity and existential fear, favouring cultural crossings and the drawing of distinct borderlines, it became a temporary or permanent space of musical action

Full textTo improve water management at the scale of large cities is a real challenge. However, the quantification of flows and environmental impacts linked to water use are not yet sufficiently developed. This is the objective of the thesis: “how to model complex urban water system of a megacity for assessing its environmental impacts in relation to the provided services to water users, within the life cycle assessment (LCA) framework?” The core of the thesis is the development of a generic framework defining water flows and environmental impacts associated with 3 categories of items – i.e., water technologies, water users and water resources – from a LCA point of view. The UWS model (termed WaLA) is built through a modular approach allowing the interoperation of these three components in an integrated way. The model provides indicators of impacts on services which may be useful to decision makers and stakeholders. It simplifies the evaluation of forecasting scenarios and decreases the complexity of the urban water system while ensuring its good representation from a LCA perspective. In addition to this main objective, the thesis also aims at refining water use impact indicators at a relevant scale for UWS. A methodology that assesses water deprivation at the sub-river basin scale in life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) integrating downstream cascade effects has been developed. It allows differentiating the withdrawal and release locations within a same river basin. The WaLA model and its associated indicators are applied to assess the environmental impacts of the water system of a Paris suburban area (perimeter of Syndicat des Eaux d'Île-de-France). It shows the interest and the applicability of the model for assessing and comparing baseline and forecasting scenarios

Full textApproximately 50 SmO towns (counting 2 to 20. 000 inhabitants) are widespread in the western centre of the Bassin Parisien (Touraine, Sarthe and their fringe). The hereby study will try to explore the social évolution of 5 among these cities (Richelieu, Loches, Sillé, Château-Renault et Fresnay) from a geographical and historical point of view. These towns were very different in their respective social structures towards the middle of the 19th century: Nevertheless, they all underwent a strong renewal of the building industry in their own historical town centers. The joint study of name lists and cadastre surveys indicates that a minority only of its inhabitants owned their houses in 186 1. The fact that ownership is rare (7. 7 1/o of the whole population), the majority of whom was ageing. If we add this element to the fact that homes classified as 'of modest conditions' had a significant patrimony, it shows the predominancy of inhelitance as a means of building up a stone-patrimony for families during the 19 th century in the towns we are currently studying. Lastly, there exists a link between the areas in whieh respective social classes lives and the type of housing people live in. In 1936, demography figures of old town centres is unfavourable and tends towards ageing. Moreover, small towns expérience clear loosening. The buildings which used to shelter large families become single-family homes. The social composition of the town we observed shows that jobs become more complexe The diversité of fonctions comes along with the tendency for our towns to become similar since each particular fades out compared with 1861. The link between social status and type of housing is weaker than ever. Today's small towns have last their role of go-between for rural surrounding areas these zones are now the living place for commuters working in the centre of big cities and hardly savouring the pleasures of life in the countryside

Full textFrom 1648 to 1653, France suffers a severe uprising against the authority of the King or his representatives, and particularly Cardinal Mazarin, main minister. Beside many accounts written by the chroniclers and narrators of that time, Abraham de Wicquefort, a Dutch citizen living in Paris, composes weekly letters to his German principal, the Duke of Wolfenbüttel. Most of them have never been published to this date : the author notifies and comments the events occurring during the rebellion of the judges in Paris and the provinces known as the “Fronde”, reports on the sequestration of the Prince of Condé and the subsequent revolt of the nobles, followed by the civil war when Louis the fourteen reaches his majority. He also covers various battles at the Spanish Flanders’ border, in Italy or Catalonia, while relating a multiplicity of events transpiring from the main families of the Kingdom with a great affluence of information, making these letters a fascinating source to understand the political and cultural history of this period

Full textThis thesis' work follows a number of studies carried on for more than thirty years on the territory during the Iron Age. It focuses on the North-West Paris basin and covers up five centuries of evolution and occupation between the Ha D1 (625 BC) and the LT D1b (90 BC). lt relies on a very rich archaeological documentation supplying a relational database built after a long work of modeling and insertion within an-information system. 3,517 occupations were thus indexed and are divided into functional categories : domestic, funerary, religious and craftsmanship. They also include data linked to regional planning. This work focuses more particularly on the domestic and funerary data. Through the use of identical tools and methodologies based on statistics, spatial analysis and spatial statistics, the goal was to see how each of these categories of sites allowed to transcribe the evolution of the occupation, of the structuration of the territories, and also of the human groups. The question that arose was that of the hierarchy of the sites and, through them, of the society. The hierarchy was approached through a crossover study of fumiture and structures. For the domestic occupations, it was also the occasion to start considering the identification of the numerous activities implemented, which make it possible to characterize the complexity and the richness of the occupations

Full textThis thesis is a contribution to the geographies of sexualities and more specifically to queer geographies. It first seeks to understand how queer places are created by the many ways they are defined, though of, and organized in their rhizomatic pattern. Self-defined queer people have indeed a tendency to create places through the gathering of an array of persons who are connected by a particular relationship to gender, sexuality, as well as by the political component of the queer discourse. Focusing next on the “milieux de vie” that emerged from this loose network of places, the research looks at the systematic violence exerted against queer people in the public and private space. This phenomenon is seen and explained through a set of norms and domination patterns occurring at different levels and scales in society. Violence within the communities is finally studied. The author concludes in examining and in offering a critic of the concept of safe space, which lay the ground for the proposal of the construction of espaces bienveillants (derived from the concept of brave place). The study was conducted through participant observations, auto-ethnographic method, on-line surveys and direct conversations. Reflexivity was at the center of the field work, the author insists most notably on the emotional work researcher faces in this type of research

Full textBased on a important corpus of prostitutional literature, novels, memories, and police archives, this thesis in history questions tensions and draws links between legitimate and illegitimates sexualities. During the second half of the 19th, the diversity of the practices and discourses about sexuality shows the plurality of prostitution's representations in the social imagination. Along a deep process of transformation of the Parisian society, this diversity also sheds light on the oppositions and confrontations between various social groups wich were trying to establish their conception of prostitution, sexuality, marriage and conjugality. The first part tackles the various paths of the prostitutes and the "femmes galantes", the "demi-monde", the student's sexuality and the rise of abolitionism. It demonstrates that the contestation of arranged marriages and the process of love marriages had transformes illegitimate sexualities before influencing marital and familial strategies. A phenomenon wich explains the multiplication of the "femmes entretenues" (kept women) and "parallel couples". The second part focusses on the evolution of the prostitutional activities with the emergence of Modern Paris. Thus, brothel's decline and prostitution's metamorphosis appear to be less linked to an evolution of the male sexual desire than to the rise of leisure and entertainment spaces to the extroversion of the Bourgeois lifestyle, as a consequence of the changes in the public space

Full textThis study deals with the different modes of noise control in a bustling neighbourhood of historical Paris city centre, busy by day and night, and with its resident’s perception of noise. Our definition of noise is restricted to human and non mechanical sound sources. Our analysis is concerned both with public and private space related arrangements. This thesis research started as a campaign against nighttime noise pollution was brought onto Paris political agenda. Our work comes up within a debate on city centre planning, between urban attractivity and residential comfort issues, which could be generalised to any lively nightlife areas attracting young crowds in globalised cities. We offer to examine the anti-noise pollution policy at the city level, and more specifically at the level of a few bustling streets, and to analyse the way the residents of these streets react to their sound environment. With regards to the complexity of the sound phenomenon and because of the specificity of the fieldwork, we have opted for a cross-circular approach at the intersection between urbanism, public action sociology, gentrification studies, social history, anthropology and psychoacoutics. Our methodology also relied on a number of tools such as a set of interviews with different local agents (residents, shopkeepers, elected representatives, etc.), archival research and micro-sociological observations

Full textAnalysis of human societies and horse populations interactions is viewed in the Western Europe Late Glacial context, an unstable climatic and environnemental period. The diversity of equids have been realised toward three areas : the Paris Basin, the Switzerland Plateau, and the Charente. The usual morphometrics analysis of several anatornical parts come out onto a regional pattern of horse populations, distinct of the specific reference, Equus caballus arcelini, Guadelli 1991. The distribution areas fragmentation imply a low level of genetic flux between them, a high démographie density and the absence of large scale migrations. On the other hand, it could be pointed out that all those horses evolved in the same kind of habitats (lowland meadows, river banks, marshes). The analysis of the equids exploitation allow to understand the socio-economic features of Paris Basin's Madgalenian and early Azilian bands, helped by a comparative study of Switzerland Plateau Magdalenians. In those areas, the evidence of large butchery sites show a year round exploitation of horse harems, killed during collective hunts. Conversely, in the reindeer dominated sites, horses have been obtained by less ambitious hunts. The "functionnal complementary" model of Madgalenian sites seems to be the more probable, despite the radiocarbon plateau chronological uncertainties. In the early Azilian case, the exploitation strategies are distinguished by less efficient but repeted approach or chase hunts, at différent seasons. The probable coexistence of those two Paris Basin cultural entities could have been possible thanks to the large horse populations presence

Full textThis work is aimed at studying the way a Parisian underground metro station is affected by various airboume pollutants. Firstly the four factors are already known to influence metro air quality — i. E. Stations and lines properties, ventilation. Number of users inside the station and outdoor air quality - are detailed. Results from previous underground experiments on gaseous and particulate pollutants were then gathered and summarised. It was discovered that aerosols play a major role in the pollution problem and therefore, during the second part of this thesis aerosols properties were specifically studied in urban and metro environments, allowing us to optimise and select relevant parameters for the continuing work. The third part of this thesis is dedicated to the materials, methods and resuits. After determining the air cxchange rate and the air velocities occuring in one particular station, instrumentation was then set up in this station and later in another one to characterise some of the physical and chemical properties of the metro aerosol with respect to the outdoor environment. Li was revealed that there were greater PM mass levels measured underground, and more importantly from the chemical analyses it was shown that there was a major contribution from the iron specie and to a less extend from other metallic elements emitted by mechanical braking system on trains. However, the use of a specific tracer — i. E. Baryum, only emitted by train braking - combined with the results of the elemental mass size distribution analysis has provide evidence ofother unerground sources whereas the outdoor acrosol does not count for much in the metro. At the second station the numerical size distribution of the submicronic aerosol was monitored. It displayed large similarities to that of the outdoor samples, particularly a peak value at 37 nm, suggesting transfer of fine particles to the underground station from street level was possible

Full textAdherence to antiretroviral therapy is a major stake of people with HIV medical care insofar as these treatments require to be followed nearly perfectly to be effective. This anthropological research addresses the issue of adherence while questioning at the same time the patient's medication-taking practices and the methods of people who prescribe treatment and/or accompany the persons with HIV/AIDS in their therapeutic difficulties. This study relies on a two years field survey carried out in Paris (France). The first part of this thesis explores the perspective of fifteen patients by studying their medication-taking and adverse effects experience and by trying to identify elements that shape and modify their medication behavior, in the direction of adherence failure or recovery. The three following parts are devoted to ethnographical description of several therapeutic accompaniment settings: the medical consultations of two public hospital services, two different adherence interventions in hospitals and one associative patients discussion group. The last part of this thesis proposes an analysis of the therapeutic behavior evolution process common to the whole of the interviewed patients, as well as a modeling of components of the relationship with the treatment which structure this behavior. Those results are compared with the methods and the logics of the different therapeutic accompaniment settings, in order to question their influence on the therapeutic behavior of the patients

Full textModern live shows tend to be light and fun affairs which integrate with bad taste and popular culture. Some stagings, which possess an undeniable artistic value, have emerged with a tone that one could call kitsch. According to Hermann Broch, kitsch is the "anti-art". This contradiction arises because, as Susan Sontag and Guy Scarpetta have demonstrated, when kitsch is considered at a distance, with irony, it can be considered art. To call a show kitsch in a non-pejorative manner, and in order to understand the manner of this reversal, one must first define kitsch. Based on the definitions of this notion by thinkers like Walter Benjamin and Clement Greenberg and the descriptions of the properties of kitsch by Abraham Moles and Christophe Genin, this dissertation will notably end with the role of the self-reflexive process of metatheatre. This allows kitsch, in identifying it as such, to become a tool for the stage that produces an aesthetic that we call metakitsch. In terms of concretely defining the stakes, the effects and the limits of this aesthetic, the operetta has proved to be the most suitable theatrical genre. The second part of this study is centered, on the one hand, on four works by Jacques Offenbach presented by the same director, Laurent Pelly, and on the other, on a comparative analysis of four representations of La Belle Helene by Offenbach, presented by different directors. It will emerge that the use of kitsch, which offers a great deal of freedom to directors, produces spectacles that are often ironic, even caustic, hybrid, eclectic and playful. The use of kitsch, of anti-art in art, seems to meet the public's need for something new
