Abstract:
A comparison of alveolar and velarized lateral realizations in two language varieties, Albanian and the Viennese dialect, has been performed. Albanian distinguishes the two laterals phonemically, whereas in the Viennese dialect, the velarized lateral was introduced by language contact with Czech immigrants. A categorical distinction between the two lateral phonemes is fully maintained in Albanian. Results are not as straightforward in the Viennese dialect. Most prominently, female speakers, if at all, realize the velarized lateral in word-final position, thus indicating the application of a ph

The papers published in this issue of Balgarski ezik are unified by the idea of presenting the peculiarities of the language varieties spoken by Bulgarian communities that live outside the state borders of present-day Bulgaria. In these new studies, one can trace the influence of the scientific ideas, theoretical views and remarkable teaching activity of an eminent Bulgarian scholar, Prof. Ivan Kochev, to whose 85th anniversary this issue is dedicated. This article is devoted to the peculiarities of the acquisition of phonetic skills by learners of German as a language of instruction in Austria. The focus of the study is on students whose first language is Ukrainian who came to Vienna in 2022 and had to integrate into the Austrian school system. When addressing the acquisition of German as a language of instruction, special attention is paid to the linguistic situation in Austria, which is strongly influenced by dialect-standard continuum processes. In this context, we first look at the terminology, clarifying the difference between learning

The 18th century was marked by the dispute among scholars which German dialect landscapes should serve as models for the development of Hochdeutsch. In addition to the Upper Saxon variety, which was often mentioned as a prestige variety, also the so called ‘Maximilianische Kanzleisprache’ of the Viennese Court played an important role in the development of a superior German written language.
The aim of my paper is to reconstruct the historical concept Hochdeutsch by using a framesemantic approach. On the basis of a text corpus that includes 6 grammars of the 18th century, an individual t

The most important person in the network of Kretschmer in Lesbos, Stefanidis supported the Viennese professor in collecting his linguistic material and evaluating the data. Abstract This article shows what we can learn from Vienna Jewish cabaret, so-called Jargontheater ‘jargon theater’ and the language situation of Vienna Jews at the end of the 19th century. By analyzing one of the most popular plays of this genre, we can see how structures from Yiddish dialects fused with Viennese German and what may have caused ‘Vienna Jewish speech,’ a Judeo-German city variety in the First Austrian Republic (1920s and 1930s).

For most German-speakers, of all ages, the name 'Kasperl' conjures up joyful images of a harmless children's puppet theatre character. Recent research in Austrian popular theatre has uncovered Kasperl's origins in live theatre performances from the eighteenth century, however. The 'Kasperl Project' concluded that Kasperl is a product of the Enlightenment civilization process and therefore a watered-down and ineffectual successor to his bawdy and flamboyant predecessors in comic theatre. The 'Kasperl Project' did not devote much analysis to the linguistic comedy of these plays, however. The Kas
