Abstract:
This study explores the significance of symbolic language and imagery in Vietnamese folk songs and proverbs for the purpose of safeguarding and transferring cultural values. This study is based on the theoretical frameworks of cultural semantics and pragmatics (Goddard & Wierzbicka, 2014) and cultural ecolinguistics (Stibbe, 2015). The study scrutinizes the expression of cultural meanings through language and explores the reciprocal influence of language on a community's conceptual system, values, and beliefs. The study utilized a qualitative research methodology to gather and examine 160 Vietnamese proverbs as valuable sources of data containing symbolic language and imagery. The findings demonstrate that these linguistic artifacts successfully capture the knowledge, experiences, beliefs, and perspectives of the Vietnamese people, showcasing their balanced connection with nature, social morality, and ethical ideals. The study employs meticulous qualitative analysis to reveal the complex network of cultural meanings embedded in symbolic language and imagery. It emphasizes the crucial role of these meanings in preserving and transmitting cultural values over generations, as well as fostering a sense of cultural identity and continuity within the Vietnamese community. In conclusion, the research highlights the significance of folk songs and proverbs in preserving and spreading Vietnam's abundant cultural heritage.

Proverbs and idioms are folk voices, are creative products of the masses through many ages, reflecting people's feelings and emotions in daily activities. Although they are from folk language, proverbs and idioms are not ordinary voices but rhymes, brief, widely popular among the masses. Proverbs and idioms are oral literature, expressing many aspects of the masses' activities, especially emotionally. In addition, proverbs and idioms also express people's judgments on the good and bad behaviors of people in society when communicating with each other. Therefore, the research topic "Vietnamese and South Korean proverbs and idioms of social relations in comparisons" has been done in order to find out the similarities and differences in culture, thinking and languages between two countries, two cultures. Since then, this study is not out of the goal to help international students have more opportunities to exchange and integrate with Vietnamese culture as well as to facilitate foreigners in studying Vietnamese language and Vietnamese studies. In this research, proverbs and idioms about social relations in Vietnamese and Korean will be compared in terms of syntax structure, semantic structure and pragmatical characteristics to find similarities and differences in culture, thinking and language.

Abstract:
This paper demonstrates how plant metaphors in Vietnamese and English proverbs reflect cultural values through an analysis. It contends that proverbs serve as a means of transmitting cultural knowledge. The essay demonstrates the influence of cultural context on metaphorical language by contrasting proverbs that convey similar meanings ("Every rose has its thorn" and "Hồng nào mà chả có gai"). Additionally, it examines proverbs that convey the same meaning but employ distinct metaphors, such as "Cơm tẻ là mẹ đẻ" versus "Corn is the staff of life." In conclusion, the essay recognizes culture-specific proverbs and asserts that comprehension of them promotes effective intercultural communication.

В настоящей статье детально определены научные исследования вьетнамских ученых в области паремиологии, рассмотрены признаки, отличающие пословицы от поговорок, с выделением таких параметров, как значение, функция, структура, синтаксис. На этой теоретической основе проанализированы национально-культурные особенности пословиц и поговорок вьетнамского языка, фиксируемые источниками с конца 90-х годов XX века. Подобно пословицам и поговоркам разных стран мира, вьетнамские пословицы и поговорки представляют собой особую форму народных знаний, социально-исторического опыта, накопленного за тысячелетия. В статье делается вывод о том, что паремиологический фонд вьетнамского языка отражает аграрный статус страны, ее патриархальный уклад, вербализуя особенности сельской жизни. На материале проанализированных паремий выделены провербиальные концепты, характерные для вьетнамского народа, такие как «воля», «стойкость», «трудолюбие», «верность», «честность», «коллективизм», «красивая внешность» (о девушке). Особое место занимают гастрономический и соматический коды и связанные с ними провербиальные смыслы. Соматический код часто применяется во вьетнамских поговорках для выражения психологических и эмоциональных состояний человека. В заключении подчеркивается необходимость изучения языковых особенностей паремий, их роли и функционирования с целью достижения большего коммуникативного эффекта. This article provides the scientific research of Vietnamese scholars in the field of paremiology, considers the features that distinguish proverbs from sayings, highlighting such parameters as meaning, function, structure, syntax. On this theoretical basis, the paper analyses the national-cultural features of proverbs and sayings of the Vietnamese language that have been recorded since the late 90s of the 20th century. Like proverbs and sayings of different countries of the world, Vietnamese proverbs and sayings represent a special form of folk knowledge, socio-historical experience accumulated over millennia. The article concludes that the paremiological fund of the Vietnamese language reflects the agrarian status of the country, its patriarchal way of life, verbalizing the peculiarities of rural life. On the material of the analyzed paroemias, the paper highlights the verbial concepts characteristic for Vietnamese people such as “will”, “resilience”, “diligence”, “loyalty”, “honesty”, “collectivism”, “beautiful appearance”. The gastronomic and somatic codes and related proverbial meanings occupy a special place. Somatic code is often used in Vietnamese proverbs to express psychological and emotional states of a person. The conclusion emphasizes the necessity of studying the linguistic features of paroemias, their role and functioning in order to achieve a greater communicative effect.

Abstract:
Mathematics and idioms, as well as proverbs, all reflect the laws of life. At the same time, primary school children may have heard idioms and proverbs before attending school. Therefore, there are many possibilities to exploit and apply idioms and proverbs in teaching mathematics in primary schools. This study aims to identify appropriate situations and apply idioms and proverbs in different regions of Vietnam to teaching mathematics. The researchers selected 1155 expressions related to mathematics from many typical pieces of research on idioms and proverbs in Vietnam. After surveying 1822 teachers three times in many provinces and cities in all 3 regions of Vietnam: the North, the Central and the South, the researchers have classified the data according to the criteria from closed to open-ended questions. The results show a prominent level of interest (level 4/5) of all teachers participating in the survey, and there is no difference in the effectiveness in the three regions, but there is a clear difference in regions in using idioms and proverbs. Particularly, identifying situations to teach geometric and quantitative knowledge, as well as probability and statistics, allows one to apply idioms and proverbs at a high level. It is concluded that if idioms and proverbs from Vietnamese regions are appropriately selected and applied in teaching mathematics in primary schools, they will contribute to improving students' mathematical ability and preserving the national cultural heritage. This paper employs the analytical tools of Cultural Linguistics to investigate the Vietnamese cultural conceptualizations of bụng (belly) and lòng (abdomen), both of which are considered to be the location of thoughts and feelings. Based on our corpus of Vietnamese idioms and proverbs, The Tale of Kieu, and several selected modern poems, we found that, while they share many cultural conceptualizations in common, lòng is used more in figurative contexts than bụng. bụng and lòng are the seat and container of thoughts and emotions. lòng is viewed as a vast sea, vast cloth, piece of land/soil, stone, and a changeable living entity. lòng, besides having size and quality, is believed to metaphorically have weight and color. An ethnographic survey reveals the Vietnamese sociocultural historical context, ethnomedicine, and philosophical beliefs that motivate the centralization on the abdominal area to metaphorically host people’s thoughts and emotions. Our investigation again reveals that language is a “memory bank” (Sharifian 2011, p. 5), this time for cultural conceptualizations that have prevailed at different stages in Vietnamese history.

Cultural integration in foreign language teaching is one of the ways to help learners develop language competence. In foreign language teaching, there have been many successful models of cultural integration. Vietnamese is also a foreign language of interest in some countries. In Vietnam, a cultural integration model in teaching Vietnamese to foreigners has been initially implemented with good results. The program was based on a number of culturally integrated teaching models to help foreigners learn Vietnamese effectively, including such elements as cultural experience (learning to sing folk songs and taking part in plays), and using literary texts (songs, proverbs). The purpose of this article is to report on a study of the effectiveness of this cultural integration program teaching Vietnamese to overseas students at the Thai Nguyen University of Education. The study involved scrutiny of documents, curricula and teaching methods, along with a survey of international students’ perceptions of three particular aspects of the program focused on cultural integration. The study also sought to gauge whether the Vietnamese language ability of the international student learners had been improved by engagement in the new program in comparison with student performance from the previous year. Рассматривается понятие «этнокультурная компетентность» в сфере образования. Большое внимание уделено типам упражнений, факторам, которые необходимо учитывать при построении градуальных упражнений, а также критериям для оценки уровня сформированной этно-культурной компетентности учащихся. Предложен дидактический материал, иллюстрирующий представленные упражнения. Описаны упражнения, разработанные по градуальному принципу с целью формирования этнокультурной компетентности вьетнамских учащихся в процессе обучения пословицам с этнокультурным компонентом. The author highlights the importance of incorporating ethnocultural components in teaching Russian as a foreign language, especially in the context of globalization, and emphasizes that acquiring ethnocultural competence is one of the primary objectives of foreign language teaching. The author examines the concept of “ethnic culture” in the field of education and categorizes ethnocultural components, such as the culture of communication, behavior, history, lifestyle, traditions, customs, and holidays. Furthermore, the author proposes two approaches to define the concept of “ethnocultural competence”: from the perspective of students and from the perspective of teachers. The author also emphasizes the significance of anticipating factors and types of exercises that should be considered before designing gradual exercises, as well as criteria for assessing students’ levels of ethnocultural competence. The author outlines the principles of developing exercises that aim to form the ethnocultural competence of Vietnamese students while teaching proverbs containing ethnocultural components. These principles include a gradual transition from the initial to the final stages, a gradual increase in the complexity of exercises, and a sequential approach. Using these principles, the author describes the didactic materials that exemplify the exercises built on the presented principles. The author suggests that gradual exercises aim to form ethnocultural competence have a great teaching potential.

Thông qua việc phân tích ngữ nghĩa và đặc điểm liên văn hóa, nghiên cứu này nhằm mục đích chỉ ra những điểm tương đồng và khác biệt về thành ngữ chỉ lòng quyết tâm trong tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt trên cơ sở ngôn ngữ học đối chiếu. Từ đó nghiên cứu rút ra những khác biệt theo định hướng liên văn hóa giữa hai ngôn ngữ về hình tượng liên tưởng trong việc dùng thành ngữ. Hơn thế nữa, giáo viên có thể khuyến khích tinh thần ham học hỏi của học viên trong quá trình khám phá vẻ đẹp của thành ngữ trong hai ngôn ngữ. Phraseological units, particularly proverbs in this study, are the root of almost all cultures as well as a critical part of language acquisition. This research, based on cross-cultural features and semantic analysis, aims to point out the similarities and differences of English and Vietnamese determination proverbs. This research can, therefore, explore the cross-cultural gaps between the two languages in terms of proverbs’ referents. Moreover, teachers can promote the learning spirit of students in their exploration of the beauty of proverbs in both languages. From this study, students can find out the relationship between the two languages and cultures, as well as gain more background knowledge and experience. Coursebook designers can also use this research as a source of reference to localize English coursebooks in Vietnam.

Lineage, known as “dòng họ” in Vietnamese or “Tông tộc” in Han characters, symbolize the intricate familial and inter-familial relationships based on shared bloodlines. The proverb “within the lineage, outside the village” has long been used to describe the enduring bond between lineages and the traditional villages in Vietnam. Lineage culture encompasses deep-rooted and sacred values that resonate through generations. This article aims to explore the essence of lineage culture within the context of traditional villages in the Thanh region, focusing on the captivating case study of Hoang Loc Village (Hoang Hoa, Thanh Hoa) in the medieval period. Through this research, we hope to shed light on the distinct characteristics of village culture in the Thanh region, while considering the broader framework of traditional Vietnamese village culture.

Abstract:
When learning English, once in a while, learners may need help to cope with English proverbs, and the dictionary may not help them explain the proverbs’ meaning. Then, it leads them to find Google Translate (GT) as a safe place to help translate proverbs. The present study attempts to discover how GT renders English proverbs into Vietnamese. To have the data for the study, the author adopted 17 proverbs from an educational website full of explanations of such proverbs. The data was collected in about 45 minutes from the GT translation platform. The results revealed that GT could translate all the words in each proverb and put them in acceptable Vietnamese structures. However, GT needs to provide Vietnamese readers with the intended meaning of the proverbs, which is to give advice to people on work and work effort. The study also includes some limitations for further study.

Abstract:
Symbolic images with negative nuance of domestic animals in proverbs is the result of symbolizing aesthetic materials with negative nuance. Vietnamese people and Korean people have many similarities in symbolizing negative features of zodiac animals being domestic animals into symbolic images with negative nuance. This is proved by 26 symbolic images with both partial and impartial homogeneity in terms of number and species of zodiac animals. The differences in the way of thinking and perceiving the world of Vietnamese and Korean people are also reflected in proverbial units of zodiac animals being domestic animals. The corpus of Korean language has 15 blanks, and the corpus of Vietnamese language has 3 blanks of zodiac animals, which are the materials to establish symbolic images with negative nuance in proverbs.

Abstract:
Language is often considered to be the summary of all the experiences of a nation and its cultural heritage. Every nation has its own language and such language reflects the values and characteristics that exist in such society and in such culture. In the negative meanings of Korean comparative proverbs, the environment, the form and the capacity of the animals are related to the bad, difficult, and unfavorable situations; the ugliness and no harmony, inadequacy; the foolishness, limited capacity and little value, etc. The comparative proverbs with zodiac signs clearly reflect the negative aspects in the material and spiritual life, worldview, outlook on life, and the values of the Korean people. The connection with Vietnamese language also shows the close similarities and the unique features of the way of thinking, the language expression as well as the culture of the two nations of Korea and Vietnam.

Abstract:
Generally, the gender culture of East Asia is male chauvinist. This assumption is not only an expression of masculine dominance but also a social convention that gives men the privilege to administrate society based on the presumption of male intelligence and rationality in order to serve the needs of social development. Such social conventions are expressed in the proverb: "Men are the backbone of the country" or "Men are as shallow thinking as the wells. Women are as deep-thinking as the betel tray." These social conventions have been extended and practiced in the structure of the traditional nuclear family, expressed in idioms and proverbs such as: "The boat follows the waterman; the girl follows the husband" or "A child has a father like a house has a roof. The fatherless children are like tadpoles without tails"; or the ethical values assigned to women such as "Three obedience and four virtues", which are considered Confucian values. It is worth noting that although Vietnam is located in the East Asia cultural area, Vietnamese society also has idioms that emphasize the role of women/mothers in the family in balancing the roles of the two genders, such as: "Men build houses, women build happy nests" or "Those who fatherless eat rice and fish, those who motherless lie in leaves". Even so, it is undeniable that men play a pivotal and vital role in the traditional Vietnamese nuclear family structure: Men are given the voice to represent the family (or agency of family), whether based on their will or the will of the family collective. In other words, the man is "the leader of the family" for all activities and development of his family, thus having all the privileges of family administration delegated by the members of his family. In the context of contemporary Vietnamese families, this element of administrative privileges is gradually being transferred to women. This transference has not just appeared in this 21st century, but has existed in a small scope. In the first 20 years of this 21st century, the mainstream discourse has increasingly encouraged this transference, such as changing the metaphor of "roof" from father to mother. Women today are compared to the "roof" of the family instead of men as tradition. Therefore, women have more voices in establishing the core values of the traditional Vietnamese nuclear family. What is the cause of that transference of privilege? What made men voluntarily give their privilege to women even though society still preserves the role of men both in society and in the family? There are many sociological explanations, such as the maturation of women's social status through labour freedom, economic independence, body self-determination, and freedom of sex-mate choice. This article aims to provide an additional perspective on socio-psychological aspects when describing and demonstrating a psychological complex that exists deep in the mind of men towards women; thus, when faced with the maturity of the status of women, men are forced to concede their position status in the role of establishing the core of values in the traditional nuclear family. This psychological complex is temporarily called "fear of being cuckold".
