Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a primary cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States. Asian Americans have the highest CRC mortality rates. CRC screening tests can reduce CRC incidence, yet Asian Americans, specifically the subgroup of Vietnamese Americans, underuse CRC screening. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand why Vietnamese Americans, ages 50 to 75, underuse CRC screening. <p> Many Vietnamese American immigrants experienced major mental health risks prior to resettlement in the United States, including the trauma of civil war, communist reeducation camps, the boat-person experience, and lengthy detention in refugee camps. As a result, Vietnamese Americans are more likely to rate their mental health status as poor or fair compared to members of other Asian subgroups. A review of the literature indicated that there are many barriers to Vietnamese American mental health service utilization, ranging from language mismatched service providers to cultural stigma. </p>

I go beyond the previous literature to examine the Viet Minh government's modernization and anti-imperialist projects, both of which proved critical to D.R.V. policy evolution and the evolution of a new national identity. Vietnam is a tragic land, which has witnessed three successive wars since it won independence in 1945. The purpose of this dissertation is to seek answers to the question of why so many tragedies struck the Vietnamese people, and in particular to examine the contribution made by Sino-American competition to this tragic history. Objectives We aimed to examine the association between immigrant generation and obesity among Californian adults and Asian Americans. Results Overall, 23.3% of the Asian population was obese, and 40.0% was overweight. The percentage of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation were 72.7%, 22.6%, and 4.6%, respectively. Overall, 1st generation of Asians had lower odds of being obese compared to Whites (OR = 0.34, 95%CI = 0.26–0.45).
