ABSTRACTExperts use their superior skills and understanding to mediate between evidence in some domain and non-experts. But how should we understand the proper relationship between experts and non-experts? In this paper, I present two ways of conceiving experts’ mediating role from the perspective of non-experts: the Authority View and the Advisor View. Jennifer Lackey (2018) has criticized the Authority View and defended the Advisor View. I defend an account of epistemic authority that avoids her criticisms while arguing the Advisor View lacks the advantages she claims. Ultimately, I present

The field of academic advising lags behind other similar fields in the use of technologically mediated communication modalities shown to improve academic outcomes. We investigated student satisfaction with undergraduate advising by examining the ways communication methods, such as social media, between student and advisor relate to student satisfaction. A considerable body of research connects students' college experiences to their interactions with a faculty member. Quality academic advising is key to student success and the faculty advisor is a valuable piece of the advisor-student interaction. To ensure student success through academic advising, it is important for institutions to understand how they can best support faculty in their advisor roles. This qualitative study explored the experiences of eleven faculty members at a mid-sized, Midwestern public institution in their role of academic advisor. The findings suggest faculty consider t

Abstract:
The editors of this volume have asked me to write something about reduction because I have been focusing on this issue in my research for some time. Rather than rehashing any previously published ideas, I want to consider a new aspect of this question—or at least one that is new to me. I will draw liberally on the work of my thesis grandfather, the chemist, Fritz Paneth. I use the term somewhat unusually, because Paneth was not the person who advised my own advisor Heinz Post but was, in fact, his natural father, from whom Heinz presumably developed an interest in the philosophical aspects of science. I will touch on such areas as realism, including naive realism, the nature of the periodic system, metaphysical aspects of chemistry, and, as suggested by the editors, the reduction of chemistry. Of course, nobody likes to be referred to as a naive anything, and not surprisingly, some chemists are quick to react if it is suggested that they tend to adopt a naively realistic attitude in their work. Nevertheless, I think it is true that chemists are often realists, naive or otherwise, and this may not be such a bad thing, as I will try to explain. The question hinges on the extent to which such realistic views are maintained and in what context they may or may not be appropriate. Broadly speaking, chemists are frequently accused of unwarranted realism by physicists for taking chemical models too literally. Whereas no chemist nowadays believes that tiny springs connect the atoms in a molecule, such denials of models are less prevalent when it conies to hybridization, electronic configurations, and atomic orbitals. Chemistry professors may well begin by declaring that these are approximate concepts, but they frequently fail to emphasize that, from the point of view of physics, they are strictly incorrect or, philosophically speaking, are nonreferring terms.

Chapter 3 looks into how the PLA established and trained the first three regular divisions, the 304th, 308th, and 312th Divisions, for the Viet Minh in China in 1950. The PLA also opened two officer academies; four communication, technology, and mechanic schools; three driving schools; two medical training centers; and six language institutes in 1951 for the Vietnam Minh. By 1952, the Chinese had provided military, technology, and professional training for 25,000 Vietnamese officers, soldiers, engineers, technicians, and medical staff in China. In August, when the Chinese Military Advisory Group (CMAG) arrived, more than 450 Chinese advisors worked with the PAVN commanders at the high command, division, regiment, and battalion levels. The PLA advisors taught the Vietnamese their successful tactics from the Chinese Civil War. They developed tactics for mobile operations and designed surprise attacks to outnumber the enemy whenever the situation permitted, in order to wipe out entire enemy units instead of simply repelling them. Chinese training, rearmament, and advisory assistance were intended to improve PAVN combat abilities in order to achieve victory by using annihilation tactics. When the PAVN launched the Border Campaign at Cao Bang in September-October 1950, they defeated the French near Cao Bang, opening transportation lines for Chinese aid.

During the seven years of writing the Ancient Unconscious I would sometimes imagine this moment of closure. I have been invested in this study, in research and writing, for many years, long before I even had a clear view of the book. Sometime in 2011, however, I officially embarked on the new book project. I associate this beginning with a specific dream, whose mysterious nature commanded my attention. The dream brought me once again to the house of Gordon Williams (1926–2010), Thacher Professor of Latin Literature at Yale for twenty years and my PhD advisor. I was showing his beautiful but empty house to someone, though I could not exactly remember who this person was. And yet a strong feeling told me that it was actually Gordon Williams whom I was showing around. The dream was the last of a series during the first year after Gordon’s death, followed shortly after by the death of his wife Jay. These frequent dream visits to their house were part of my mourning....

Chapter 4 presents three of Fénelon’s letters. The Letter to Louis XIV is a striking excoriation of both the character and rule of Louis XIV. An enduring model of what it looks like to speak truth to power, the Letter offers an uncompromising critique of the obsession with grandeur and glory that led Louis to privilege his image and the image of his court over the well-being of his people. Alongside it appear two further selections from Fénelon’s extensive correspondence—a letter to the chief advisor to the King of Spain and a letter to the Duke of Burgundy grown to adulthood—that likewise offer insight into his views on the responsibilities of advisors to and holders of executive authority.

Abstract:
Advisory committees are part and parcel of policy-making in every government agency. Their input is used at many levels, ranging from high level strategic initiatives and planning to very specific input into narrowly defined decisions. This chapter describes an operational overview of the different approaches used by science agencies in the United States and documents the heterogeneous way in which they are used. It suggests that some of the principles that motivated the establishment of advisory committees are not always fully served in practice. It also finds that that the financial structure and incentives of some entities, might usefully be reviewed. The chapter concludes by observing that the structure of committees might be improved by developing a more scientific approach to their constitution.

This deliverable report focuses on the main Uncertainty Quanti cation (UQ) results obtained within the EXAscale Quanti cation of Uncertainties for Technology and Science Simulation (ExaQUte) project. Details on the turbulent wind inlet generator, that enables the supply of random, yet steady, wind velocity boundary conditions during run-time, are given in section 2. This enables the developed UQ workflow, whose results are presented on the basis of the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Council (CAARC) as described in Deliverable 7.1. Finally, the completed UQ workflow and the results are eval
