Abstract:
Business process analysis and integration are key endeavours for today's enterprises. Recently, Web services have been widely adopted for the implementation and integration of business processes within and across enterprises. In this dissertation, we investigate the problem of enabling the analysis of service interactions, in today's enterprises, in the context of business process executions, and that of service integration. Our study shows that only fraction of interactions in the enterprise are supported by process-aware systems. However, enabling above-mentioned analyses requires: (i) a model of the underlying business process to be used as a reference for the analysis, and (ii) the ability to correlate events generated during service interactions into process instances. We refer to a process model and the corresponding process instances as a "process view". We propose the concept of process space to refer to all process related information sources in the enterprise, over which various process views are defined. We propose the design and development of a system called "process space discovery system" (PSDS) for discovering process views in a process space. We introduce novel approaches for the correlation of events into process instances, focusing on the public processes of Web services (business protocols), and also for the discovery of the business protocol models from the process instances of a process view. Analysis of service integration approaches shows that while standardisation in Web services simplifies the integration in the communication level, at the higher levels of abstractions (e.g., services interfaces and protocol models) services are still open to heterogeneities. We characterise the mismatches between service interfaces and protocol specifications and introduce "mismatch patterns" to represent them. A mismatch pattern also includes an adapter template that aims at the resolution of the captured mismatch. We also propose semi-automated approaches for identifying the mismatches between interface and protocol specifications of two services. The proposed approaches have been implemented in prototype tools, and experimentally validated on synthetic and real-world datasets. The discovered process views, using PSDS, can be used to perform various analyses in an enterprise, and the proposed adaptation approach facilitates the adoption of Web services in business process integration.

Roth, Benjamin S. "Academic Culture, Business Culture, and Measuring Achievement Differences: Internal Auditing Views." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2012. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/eps_diss/93.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT ACADEMIC CULTURE, BUSINESS CULTURE, AND MEASURING ACHIEVEMENT DIFFERENCES: INTERNAL AUDITING VIEWS by Benjamin Sterling Roth This study explored whether university internal audit directors’ views of culture and measuring achievement differences between their institutions and a business were related to how they viewed internal auditing priorities and uses. The Carnegie Classification system’s 283 Doctorate-granting Universities were the target population. Directors for 144 institutions (51%) returned questionnaires providing their views of academic culture and measuring achievement differences; the importance of internal auditor attributes, and types, subject areas, and determinants of internal auditing work; and whether operational audits of research, teaching, and public service were appropriate. Data collected included directors’ age, gender, race and ethnicity, education, certifications, and work experience and information on their reporting officials, boards/audit committees, audit departments, and institutions. Chi-square tests of independence, p ≤ .05, determined statistically significant relationships, and Cramer’s V, effect size. Dichotomous categories of “businesslike” and “distinct” were used to label views from the university’s perspective. Fifty-six percent viewed university culture distinct; 65% viewed measuring achievement businesslike. Thirty-eight percent viewed both businesslike; 30%, both distinct; 26%, culture distinct and measuring achievement businesslike; and 6%, culture businesslike and measuring achievement distinct. Culture views were related to measuring achievement views with medium effect, and with large effect for respondent subsets, such as older (≥ 50 years) males, certified internal auditors (CIAs), and directors at schools with higher research funding and/or a medical school. Also, with small effects, a distinct culture view favored awareness of culture and missions; a businesslike culture view favored operational audits; and a businesslike measuring achievement view favored operational audits in research, teaching, and public service. Older males had the highest percentages viewing culture businesslike and both culture and measuring achievement businesslike. CIAs had highest percentages viewing culture distinct and both culture and measuring achievement distinct. With culture and measuring achievement views related, internal auditor awareness of university culture and missions might warrant greater emphasis. Businesslike views favoring operational audits might encourage management practices historically decried by scholars as ill-fitting an academy, or might conserve resources to make more available to enhance academic practices and outcomes.

Davis, Katherine. "Reconciling views of project success : a multiple stakeholder model." Thesis, Kingston University, 2016. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/35755/.

Full text
Abstract:
Organisations use projects to manage customised, one-off events across a wide range of functions. Project management is an essential operational tool and process that is utilised to effectively and efficiently manage resources, tasks and activities, and associated timelines. Since each project is considered unique, it is essential to control the project's outcome parameters to minimise the chances of failure and the likely major financial and managerial ramifications for the organisation. As a consequence, project management literature has been dominated by discussions on the various critical success factors that are used to maximise the probability of a project's success. However, there is no single formula for success. In a recent report, it was found that 19% of completed projects fail and 52% were challenged in terms of meeting the time, cost, and quality constraints. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility that failure is a result of different interpretations of the criteria and factors used for success (termed 'success dimensions' within this study) by multiple stakeholder groups. Currently, there is no recorded theory to determine project success within the project management literature, which includes both the perspective of multiple stakeholder groups and shared use of success dimensions for a given project. This omission is the basis of the current work, which explores the impact of using all stakeholder views as opposed to a selected few to define project success. The research outcomes are important for informed managerial decision making that enables the minimisation of major financial losses. This study drew on previous research undertaken on project success and combined technological solutions (in the form of software packages, such as the Web of Science database, Bibexcel, NVivo, and Excel) to facilitate the identification, selection, and analysis of data sources relating to the success dimensions for project management. The results of the systematic literature review identified the 'diagnostic behavioural instrument' as the most frequently recognised measure of project success. This broadly argues that there are ten success factors that must be considered for successful project implementation. The literature also highlights the limitations of the 'diagnostic behavioural instrument', which forms part of the current gap in the literature regarding project success. These limitations were used to design a qualitative study to identify the additional attributes regarding project success as perceived across different stakeholder groups (i.e., senior management, project core team, and project recipients), as well as identifying which stakeholder perspectives are considered important in judging project success and which ones are being ignored. The findings of the qualitative study were extended to a quantitative study to confirm whether the initial findings were similar across a larger sample of stakeholders. The results from both studies were used to create an idealised, multiple stakeholder model, considering all the critical attributes to measure project success. This model was tested with a focus group to identify the extent of ease and the barriers that adopting this new perspective would present in practice. The results of the qualitative and quantitative studies showed clear differences between the project performance attributes that were considered important across the different stakeholder groups. The focus group results demonstrated a clear difference in opinion within and among the stakeholder groups, indicating their potential use for project managers to align stakeholders' views to increase project success. There is some indication that the model could be applied to projects from any field, but testing this assumption is beyond the scope of the current work. However, the preliminary results would support its use to increase the shared, multiple stakeholder perception of project success. Through use of the model, organisations can be more precise in their choice of success dimensions used to judge project success, leading to more informed decision making and subsequent motivation of employees and hence a more productive organisational culture.

Simpson-Law, Meagan. "Ethical consumption: An analysis of consumer views and ethical coffee purchasing trends." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28426.

Full text
Abstract:
Fair Trade is a market-based development tool with much potential to improve the lives of small-scale, impoverished producers in the developing world; however, despite the movement's admirable goals, its effectiveness is limited. Low consumer demand is one of the most significant limitations. This thesis discusses the Fair Trade movement and the current challenges it faces---in particular, those posed by the current mainstreaming trend. Most significantly, it examines factors affecting demand for Fair Trade and other ethical trade products. Drawing on a study of coffee consumers in one rural and two urban centres in Manitoba, this thesis presents some preliminary conclusions about consumer views and ethical coffee purchasing trends. Findings suggest that ethical coffee consumption is positively associated with higher education and the ability to distinguish between different ethical certifications, and negatively assicated with distance from ethical coffee purchasing outlets. Ethical coffee purchasing behaviours also suggest that Fair Trade's mainstreaming trend may not effectively increase the demand for Fair Trade products.

Abstract:
<p> Education policymakers in Nigeria lack the knowledge on the views of Niger Delta youths, who rely on entrepreneurship education and its contents to fight poverty and unemployment in their area. This study&rsquo;s purpose was to gain deeper understanding of the views of Niger Delta youths on entrepreneurship education, its contents, and its role in fighting their area&rsquo;s high rate of poverty and unemployment. This study was framed and guided by three key concepts that focus on the challenges of poor communities: youth unemployment in sub-Saharan Africa, entrepreneurship education, and youth entrepreneurship. To address this issue properly, a qualitative multiple-case study was designed. Data were collected from multiple sources: semi structured interviews, archival data from government labor reports , and the researcher&rsquo;s field notes.Data analysis was completed through thematic and cross-case synthesis analysis. . The findings showed that the Niger Delta is less privileged in financial availability, deepened in economic recessions under unemployment, poverty, inflation, hunger and starvations, with less chance of obtaining education, without qualification for employable white-collar jobs, neglected by the government of Nigeria, irrespective that Niger Delta region is the city of petroleum production that gives approximately 95% of Nigerian national revenue annually. With the adoption of entrepreneurship education in their school system and through training and skill acquisition, the Niger Delta would contribute to poverty alleviation, increased business career ownership, and meet the daily economic demands of their families, and be able to have a voice in social change. Social change can potentially be achieved through economic restoration and the enhancement of youths&rsquo; education and employment status, which in turn would help decrease the rate of poverty.</p><p>

Odimara, Chika Raymond. "Managers' Views on Path-Breaking Interventions to Support Effective New Public Management in Nigeria." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6639.

Full text
Abstract:
Implementing public sector reform in Nigeria is complex. Although government effectiveness is important for citizens' welfare, little evidence links management practices for effective public service delivery for low-income populations in developing countries. The purpose of this qualitative, multiple case study was to explore views of public agency managers in Nigeria on putting progressive interventions into practice to improve public services and change social outcomes for this population. The conceptual framework of the proposed study was path dependency, defined as increasing returns, positive feedback, or self-reinforcing processes, which are significant in understanding the challenges of formal and intentional reform programs. Seven agency managers recruited from the Nigerian public sector completed semistructured interviews to give their perspectives to address the following research question: "What are the views of public agency managers in Nigeria, assigned agents of NPM reform, on implementing path-breaking interventions within their agencies to improve services and change social outcomes for the low-income population?" I used NvIVO software to develop the splitting up of common codes, phrases, and words in the responses of the participants. Fifteen themes were presented, including the categories of corruption, nepotism, marginalization, and poor service delivery to low-income populations in Nigeria. Social change for the low-income population in Nigeria can only be realized when local NPM managers themselves can have a voice in Nigeria's national conversation on implementing effective interventions to improve services and change social outcomes.

Abstract:
The esport industry is growing, and it is growing fast. Research suggests that the phenomenon of esport poses a great opportunity to research the development and assessment of human expertise in our modern digitized society. Consequently, the research in this thesis is that of a case study of an esport organization through which we have sought to answer the research question: "How do stakeholders within an esport organization view human capital, that is the investment in, and the development, assessment, and treatment of players?" We answered this research question by gathering relevant empirical material through five semi-structured interviews, which we analyzed to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying reasons and different justifications as to how human capital in the organization is viewed by different stakeholders within the organization. We present four general conclusions. Firstly, there were similar views among the different stakeholders regarding investments in and development of players. Secondly, it was apparent that the stakeholders viewed the players as the core of the business. Thirdly, upper management seemed to carry more of a goal-oriented perspective on the players development as opposed to stakeholders more ‘hierarchically’ adjacent to the players. And lastly, the investments in the players' development were justified through various aspects. Through these conclusions, we i) contribute to managerial/organizational knowledge on how or how not to invest in, develop, assess, and treat human capital in an esport organization, ii) contribute theoretically by applying various different theories and concepts in an esport context; thus expanding the theoretical knowledge of the capabilities and usage of said theories and concepts, and iii) contribute to the empirical body of literature regarding the esport phenomenon by portraying different stakeholder views of human capital within an esport context.

Abstract:
<p> This is an empirical study of ecological worldviews and action logics of global sustainability leaders. Although a body of research has emerged in recent years focused on corporate sustainability practices at the organizational level, the literature has paid less attention to corporate sustainability at the individual level. As a result, little is known about the deeper psychological motivations of sustainability leaders and how these motivations may influence their behavior and effectiveness as change agents. </p><p> This study was based on theoretical insights from several social science disciplines including ecopsychology, integral ecology, environmental sociology, and developmental psychology. Drawing on interviews with 65 leaders in more than 50 multinational corporations, NGOs, and consultancies, the study presents three major propositions that illuminate specific ways that ecological worldviews and action logics are developed and expressed by sustainability leaders. Specific findings include five experiences that shape ecological worldviews over the lifespan and six ways that post-conventional action logics are expressed by sustainability leaders. Findings also include how the complexity of sustainability is driving highly collaborative approaches to leadership. Insights from this research can be integrated into leadership development programs in a wide range of public and private institutions and will be of interest to a range of sustainability scholars, social science researchers, sustainability executives, and social entrepreneurs. </p><p> Key Words: Sustainability leader, ecological worldviews, action logics, ecopsychology, developmental theory, new ecological paradigm, ecological self, corporate sustainability.</p>

Full text
Abstract:
Chinese firms are experiencing a rapid increase in technological diversification, which is referred to as maintaining their capabilities in multiple technologies. However, the research on the relationship between technological diversification and firm performance is inconclusive. This PhD thesis tries to re-investigate the technological diversification-firm performance relationship from three different perspectives using data on Chinese listed firms from 2003 to 2014. First, the thesis tries to overcome the shortcomings of previous technological diversification research by unpacking technological diversification into explorative and exploitative technological dimensions from the mechanical view and studying their roles in firm performance. The findings suggest that technological diversification that combines explorative and exploitative dimensions is positively related to firm performance. This relationship is conditional on intangible complementary assets and firm type (high or low-tech firms). Second, this thesis tries to investigate the technological diversification-firm performance relationship through an institutional view that has hardly been mentioned in the previous literature. Here it is argued that firms try to use technological diversification as a way to gain legitimacy. In order to do so, firms' technological diversification need to be similar to the industrial norms. The results reveal a positive relationship between firms' conformity in technological diversification and their performance. The results further delineate the boundary conditions that influence this relationship. While environmental dynamism strengthens the conformity-performance relationship, environmental munificence reduces it. Finally, this thesis tries to integrate both a mechanical view and an institutional view of technological diversification and find evidence to support the optimal distinctiveness view that firms should reach a balance between these views. The results reveal a curvilinear (inverted U-shaped) relationship between firms' conformity in technological diversification and their performance. I also test the boundary conditions of this relationship. While firm age strengthens the conformity-performance relationship, state ownership weakens it.

Abstract:
<p>Businesses carrying out related diversification moves with the objective to gain synergy effects have been a frequently occurring phenomenon since the midst of the past century. Plenty of models have been constructed, mainly using external data, in order to predict the outcome of these moves, but a high degree of contradictory results in empiric testing shows that current models are insufficient. Our objective is to present a model which also takes into account the internal data presented by the line of research called horizontal strategies, with the aim of moving towards a more accurate explanatory model for related diversification. This is a study of literature which resulted in a model which may be used for approximations as a strategic planning device. Our main conclusions are that further empirical testing, mainly regarding the behaviour of costs for implementing interrelationships, is necessary in order to create an accurate, explanatory model for predicting the outcome of related diversification.</p>

Abstract:
Main purpose - In a world where different countries have adopted different actions towards sustainability, their sustainable development is strongly affected by the level of commitment toward corporate sustainability of the different companies forming the countries business environment. Economy students from different countries are the future actors of the business environment and we want to discover how they experience and value different aspects within the concept of corporate sustainability in three different countries: Sweden, Italy and Russia. We want to study if their attitudes and views reflect the degree of sustainability that is emphasized in the country. Sub purpose - We look at economy students as future businessmen and businesswomen; and to be able to value their attitudes towards the concept of corporate sustainability we need concrete aspects that are directly collected from the business environments. The identification of these criteria is the reason why the achievement of our main purpose requires that we perform a explorative study of the sustainability leaders. We want to empirically explore the business environment in order to identify the criteria that characterize corporate sustainability. Those criteria are the ones that we will use in our survey in order to understand the students attitudes and perceptions about the concept of corporate sustainability. Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 50 surveys each from Sweden, Russia and Italy was analyzed using a combination of deductive and inductive coding techniques. The answers from the students were analyzed in order to reveal the eventual existence of a connection between the way of answering and the country of origin.   Findings – The findings of the study show that the educational development toward sustainability is not as fast as the one of the business environment. This development seems to be fastest in Sweden and Italy and much slower in Russia. Students from all three countries seem to have a general interest in this topic and they expressed their wish to have more information from their universities. There are some differences in the way students value the concept of corporate sustainability in different countries; however, there is an indication that the ranking positions of the countries explored will not change in the future. Originality/value – We have succeeded in investigating the development of the sustainability trend in the business environment by shifting the focus from the company’s dimension to the economy student’s dimension. We approached a complex and controversial topic by individualizing an uncovered field. We showed how the study of corporate sustainable development must be structured based on the long term perspective by taking into consideration the influence of the future actors of the business environment.

Abstract:
This thesis is guided primarily by concepts associated with Pierre Bourdieu's habitus perspectives by comparing them with disruptive innovative products dynamically developing broader context related to market offerings and services, and their positive outcomes once the habitus is disrupted. Understanding how disruptive innovation can change the habitus traits among customers. At the same time, by discovering the habitus traits of managers in corporations have failed to pay close attention to the new tendencies either by ignoring the signs from customers' demands or missing significant opportunities in the market that could help them to improve the business approaches. Disruptive Innovation describes a process through which new products that underperform in comparison to existing products' key attributes intrude upon a market by introducing an alternative package of benefits centered around being cheaper, simple, smaller, and or/ more suitable for consumers demands. Thus, companies should be aware of these disruptive leanings as a form to stay competitive in the given industry.

Abstract:
In order to achieve a cashless society, many countries have started to use electronic payment methods and tools to replace traditional payment methods. China and Sweden already have mature electronic payment tools, Swish, and Alipay. In this research, a phenomenological approach was used to interview users comparing two electronic payment tools, the Chinese Alipay and the Swedish Swish. The analysis of the respondents’ answers shows that convenience, security, and cost of electronic payment tools are the most important aspects to them, which is in line with previous research on acceptance, adoption and use of new technology, not only electronic payment tools. Convenience and security were more important. However, too much convenience will affect the interviewees' trust in electronic payment tools because it will make interviewees feel unsafe. Respondents' trust is affected by their own acquaintance; they trust electronic payment tools they know better.

Abstract:
<p>At the time of writing, the business world is currently recovering from a recession that struck globally in the late 2008. The financial crisis brought many consequences, not least in the labor market. In meantime, media is reporting of the increasing trends of companies outsourcing their employment needs, by using staffing companies. Could it be that there is a correlation between the recession and the companies’ choices to do so?</p><p>By revising literature on the topic we have found that the companies need for flexibility seem to be their main reason for using staffing companies. We have also come to review the first reports on the current increase of staffing company use in the US claimed to be caused by the current recession. Regarding the recession, we have come to find that it does have a structural impact on the labor market according to literature. An impact, that many claims is not temporary, but is here to stay.</p><p>We have departed from retroduction with a touch of abduction when investigating our research problem. In practice, we have conducted a study based on surveys where we have asked 37 people in managerial positions at the top 100 largest employers in Sweden about their views on the recession and their attitudes towards the staffing industry. In addition, we have conducted an interview with a manager from a staffing company in Sweden to get another view on the use of staffing companies.</p><p>The findings of this study include; even though several references in this paper forecast rapid growth during times of expansion for the staffing companies, this is not reflected within the responses in our sample. The companies perceive the situation of temporary staff as being better than what some theory suggests. There is reason to suggest that large companies that use staffing companies are moving towards a permanent need of temporary labor, and the respondent of such companies generally perceive staffing companies as a good option for mitigating labor-associated risks.</p><p>It is difficult to draw definite conclusions based on our findings. We have opted to give the reader some insight as to how the companies perceive the staffing industry, and how a manager of a staffing company perceives its current state. We would like to encourage further research to use the questions and suggestions raised in our paper to conduct tests in the area of temporary staffing from a corporate perspective to nourish the debate in the society with a scientific point of view.</p>

Abstract:
Ethical issues and problems in business are receiving increasing attention, both in terms of criticism of examples of "bad" behaviour of business actors and in terms of the development of ethical codes of conduct in certain companies, ethical visions for businesses etc. In general, ethical problems seem to be increasingly prevalent in business, but ethics tend to be disregarded by traditional organisational and managerial theory. This calls for the development of an ethical perspective on business. This study adopts a stakeholder approach to the problem, meaning that the empirical focus lies on how business actors deal with the ethical issues that arise in their daily work in relation to various stakeholder groups. Two empirical studies have been conducted: one is a survey study of the attitudes of Swedish managing directors, and the other a case study of the ethical values and behaviour of two companies. These studies resulted in the formulation of concepts which reflect contextually interpreted moral views on the individual and organisational levels, respectively. On the individual level, a distinction was made between humanitarian morality, meaning that ethical problems in business are judged according to what is best for individuals, and organisational morality, where economic and practical concerns for the company are considered. On the organisational level, I found a principled, individually based morality where rule-following, voluntary agreements and personal moral norms were important, and an instrumental, collectively based morality, which meant that company goals dictated the way stakeholder relations and ethical dilemmas were taken care of. Overall, it was possible to make a distinction between two basic ethical criteria business actors use when judging ethical dilemmas: principles versus objectives. The results indicate that the use of principles and moral rules presuppose an intimate and personal handling of stakeholder relations. On the other hand, when business actors acquire a more professional way of managing their activities, stakeholder relationships are handled in accordance with objectives and economic utility, these usually being the same as company goals. One of the major contributions of this thesis is the concept of the ethical contract, as a metaphor for the relationship between a company and any one particular stakeholder with special focus on the informal and implicit aspects of the relationship. The contract is characterised by two opposing forces: the striving for self-interest, which underpins ethical problems, and the development of self-imposed duties, which are necessary if instrumentally based interaction is to be "good". The mutual development of such duties is stimulated by proximity and personal relations.<br>digitalisering@umu

Abstract:
<p>This paper will from a managerial perspective investigate the function of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) as a strategic tool for companies operating in Indonesia.Another aspect this paper will discuss is different views on CSR and what positive aswell as negative aspects CSR brings. The country was first in the world to state a lawregarding CSR performance in 2007, which makes CSR mandatory for all companiesusing natural resources in some way. This issue complicates CSR matters in Indonesiasince the law is vague regarding what is considered as a natural resource. Furthermore, this paper will display how companies using CSR relate themselves totheir stakeholders and in what way they operate in order to fulfil and satisfy differentstakeholders’ needs and demands. It will also discuss which stakeholder is consideredto be the most important and influential regarding a company’s CSR activities.Findings in this thesis show that CSR among companies is used as a strategy in orderto gain legitimacy from the society to be able to do business and operate in theseareas. Further, using CSR will create competitive advantages towards non-users anda company will increase its reputation as well as image.</p>

Abstract:
The manner by which courts view performance appraisals in relation to the outcome of case is certainly a topic worthy of discussion. Utilizing the framework used within the work of Werner and Bolino (1997), the following study was able to accomplish two main goals: (1) update the information of Werner and Bolino (1997) by evaluating modern cases, and (2) to evaluate new data regarding age discrimination utilizing the same framework as Werner and Bolino (1997). Utilizing chi-square analysis to test all of the hypotheses, it was demonstrated that there was statistical significance in performance appraisals with the presence of a job analysis regarding court outcome. Other variables such as appraisal basis (trait, behavioral, MBO), triangulation, and appraisal frequency did not have any statistical significance. Out of the six new hypotheses tested, all showed statistical significance except for one. These hypotheses showcased the immense differences in how different forms of discrimination are viewed by the court even with respect to the performance appraisal. This was especially true with age discrimination in comparison to every other form of discrimination. In conclusion the following study accomplished its two main goals by displaying consistency with Werner and Bolino’s work and successfully evaluating new variables to support the hypotheses that involve differences between different forms of discrimination and the outcome of the court case.

Analysförfarandet delades upp i två steg.

Abstract:
According to Johansson &amp; Hjalmarsson (2003) the business advice industry targeting microenterprises, small and medium sized businesses is a multibillion pound activity throughout the world, but little research has been conducted upon the theoretical basis for this field. The content of the advice coming from the advice industry targeting microenterprises is questioned by both micro-entrepreneurs and researchers, according to Johansson (1997), who describes that the use of support services among microenterprises doesn’t answer to their needs. To figure out why the conception of growth advice doesn’t correspond between academics, entrepreneurs and advisors, the research question for this study is – what similarities and differences in content of microenterprise growth advice are there between entrepreneurs, academics and advisors? The purpose of the study is to identify and analyse these areas. This is a qualitative study that will be carried out with an inductive approach and exploratory design. Interviews and focus groups have been conducted with advisors and entrepreneurs, and in addition to this, a literature study has been performed. Further, the contents of business advice have been analysed, and in the final section of this paper conclusions are presented regarding what the conceptions are of microenterprise growth advice among academics, entrepreneurs as well as advisors. By having identified the differences and similarities among these conceptions a general statement about the business advice industry is made; in relation to both empirical findings and the theoretical background of this study.

Abstract:
With an increased number aesthetic surgeries performed in Sweden combined with social media used as a marketing tool, potential clients are exposed for persuasive marketing messages. The harder competition has led to a pressure on prices and the requirements of marketers’ creativity have increased. We predicted that this industry faces ethical challenges which makes it worth investigating.  The purpose of the study was to explore how young women view and respond to marketing by aesthetic surgery clinics in social media. In order to fulfill the purpose a qualitative approach was conducted through the use of two different focus group interviews. Twenty screenshots were discussed by eight young Swedish women where two of them have undertaken aesthetic procedures.   The conclusions of the study shows how different marketing messages can be viewed and how clients respond to them. The respondents perceived a normalization of aesthetic procedures due to social media marketing. Furthermore, the findings also suggest that there is a difference in how young women who undertook aesthetic procedures view and respond to the marketing compared to the unexperienced women. Marketing that communicates professionalism is likely to be more positively viewed by clients. This study further confirms our predictions regarding an ethical tension between the marketing messages and the recipients.  The implications of the study are an increased awareness of how this type of marketing is viewed from young women’s perspective. Furthermore, future research could focus on if surgeons are persuasive during consolations and how this is revealed.

Amukwelele, Laimi Naango. "Rural road infrastructure as a facilitating channel towards rural development : community views and perceptions on the Kamanjab-Omakange-Okahao road project in North-Western Namibia." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/95652.

Abstract:
Thesis (MDF)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.<br>Rural development in most of the developing countries, Namibia included, entails making sure that every area is accessible in terms of road networks and telecommunications. Such infrastructure avoids the alienation of some areas or segregation and marginalisation of these same areas. Just as in many other African countries, a large portion of the Namibian population is located in the rural areas, yet development has not as of yet cascaded downstream to reach them. This research explores how rural road infrastructure development and facelift can transform the economic development of the rural folk. Most entrepreneurs in rural areas struggle to grow as they have challenges connecting to the markets, due to poor road infrastructure. The rural people in Tsandi and Opuwo constituencies in north-western Namibia desire to be easily connected to activity centres like schools, hospitals, etc. However, accessibility, especially during the rainy season, is a problem. The researcher used a quantitative data analysis method on data collected from rural residents and rural entrepreneurs via questionnaires, interviews and observation methods. These methods were combined in order to come up with a more reliable conclusion from the randomly selected sample, representing the population of the two constituencies in the north-western Namibia. Rural communities are prevented from accessing a number of resources because of poor road networks. For example, it is common that the rural residents get stale news with expiration dates ranging from one month up until three to four months. This report shall propagate various ways that can be employed to improve road infrastructure in the rural areas as well as unveil the benefits of such development to overall rural economic challenges. A large amount of literature was considered for review on this topic as well as field research in order to understand the findings on the topic and to come up with a sound conclusion containing worthwhile recommendations. It was observed that rural road infrastructure development plays a pivotal role in rural socio-economic development, which is usually measured by the Rural Access Index (RAI). As the road infrastructure improves, so too will the standard of living for rural people because they will have the convenience and ease of road travel to be able to access to hospitals, schools and other activity centres. In order to effectively unlock the full potential of rural road infrastructure and transport corridors, a new perspective for road infrastructure is required that takes into account lessons learnt and changes to the external environment.

Nicolaisen, Johanna, and Elsa Thorgren. "Vad styr ekonomistudenternas val av arbetsgivare? : En undersökning riktad mot studenter vid Ekonomprogrammet på Högskolan i Gävle." Thesis, University of Gävle, Department of Business Administration and Economics, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-128.

Full text
Abstract:
We are interested in studying “what determines the students of business administration’s choice of employer” since we are students of business administration ourselves and have started to think about our future employers.</p><p>This subject is also interesting for companies and organizations since knowledge about what determines the choice can make it easier to attract suitable co-workers. When the companies and organisations have found the right employees it’s a matter of keeping them and one way of doing this is by knowing and satisfying the employees’ needs.</p><p>The purpose of this essay is to examine what determines the students of business administration’s choices of future employer through their factors of motivation and if these factors is consistent with existing theories on motivation. We also want to find out if companies and organizations know what students of business administration are interested in and what can be done to make students want to live in Gävle after they are finished with their studies.</p><p>The method we have chosen for our study is e-mail interviews since our first idea of discussions in focus groups couldn’t be followed through because of a lack of interest. Nine students of business administration at the University College of Gävle and three organizations in Gävle, that are involved in the NU!-project, participated in the interviews.</p><p>To get a deeper knowledge into what motivates people we have chosen to study a number of motivational theories. We have chosen a few, to us, well-known theories to create a base to which we add less discussed theories to give us different angles of approach.</p><p>We also present facts about the labour market in Gävleborgs län, a study concerning what expectations the students at the University College of Gävle have on their future labour market, Universum Communications’ “FöretagsBarometern” and an understanding of the process of socialisation.</p><p>The most important motivational factors that the studentgroup is concerned with regarding future employers are: the work assignments (are they inspiring, diverse and meaningful?), the salary (is it a fair compensation?), growth opportunities (both personally and professionally?), work hours and commuting time (will I have time for family, friends and interests?) and a pleasant work environment (will I like working here?).</p><p>The motivational theories that we chose didn’t fully explain the students’ choice of motivational factors. There is however certain parts of the theories that offers some understanding of the students’ choices, but to get a deeper understanding a combination of several theories is needed.</p><p>The employers seem to have some insight in what the students of business administration are looking for but they don’t have the complete picture, since none of them mention work assignments as an important factor.</p><p>Both groups think that a more positive labour market could attract more students to stay in Gävle, i.e. that there are work related to business administration available. Many of the students of business administration could imagine staying in Gävle if they got a work that suited them.</p>

Abstract:
Para aplicar as visões arquiteturais ODP foram utilizados o estilo arquitetural SOA e os conceitos de evolução de arquitetura de software da Model Driven Architecture (MDA).<br>The Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) brings a notation that is readily understandable by all business users and the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) is meant to be used to coordinate the execution of the process implemented, through web services call. There are several researches that demonstrate how to relate both languages, in various forms inside the software development process, to obtain the BPEL from the BPMN model. But there is a commom problem in synchronization between models, ie from BPEL model can not return to the BPMN model. This paper presents a way to obtain the relationship using views of software architecture. As BPEL uses the services to coordinate the execution of business processes, this paper used the software oriented architecture (SOA). Thus, from the problem of use of two technologies, emerged the problem of relationship between the specification of business processes and implementation of these processes, through the services. The proposed solution is to apply architectural views of the Open Distributed Processing (ODP) in the specification and execution of business processes. To apply the ODP architectural views were used the SOA architectural style and concepts of software architecture evolution of the Model Driven Architecture (MDA).

Abstract:
This research paper was aimed at analysing the influence of culture and communication practices in team functioning.  The scope of the study was limited to the project teams in the financial sector in Japan and the Philippines. The study was a qualitative research through the application of case studies whilst the primary data were gathered from semi-structured interviews. The findings of the study revealed that the project teams were collectivist with a noticeable degree of power distance, bestowment of status through ascription and the strong need for harmony in the project team environment. The communication practices were also affected by the hierarchical, relational, societal and regulatory dictates and expectations. However, there were some differences noted in Japanese and Philippine project teams as the latter exhibited more flexibility towards hierarchical relationship where position was not seen as hindrance in developing convivial and professional relationships. In so doing, culture and communication practices influenced team functioning in the aforementioned research context. Finally, the results of the study will allow project members, leaders and other key stakeholders in understanding the influence of culture and communication practices to team functioning in a more in-depth manner. This will lead to better policies and practices in helping them realise their goals and objectives.

Abstract:
The unemployment rate in South Africa and around the world has a crippling effect on economies. Many studies have shown that an improvement in entrepreneurial activity frequently leads to a decrease in unemployment and increase in economic growth rate. Young firms play an essential role in new job creation through both start-ups and firm growth, and business incubators have been shown to be highly effective tools for developing these new ventures and contributing to job creation and economic development. Gaining a greater understanding of the factors driving business incubator effectiveness will lead to an increase in the number of successful early stage firms, thus contributing to job creation and economic growth. In addition, having an understanding of the differences in perceptions between incubator managers, tenants and key stakeholders with regards to business incubator effectiveness will help tenants and stakeholders make better decisions on which incubators to work with, as well as helping business incubators to align their offering to the needs of tenants and stakeholders. This study explored the factors that drive business incubator effectiveness from the perspective of entrepreneurs, incubator managers and stakeholders as well as to identify differences in opinions between these three groups. This was done using a phenomenological approach, focused on gathering qualitative data using in-depth semi-structured interviews from 16 participants. A success framework for business incubation emerged from the research findings and was found to represent the 16 components that are crucial to incubator effectiveness from the perspective of the three sample groups. The results of this study could help to improve effective incubation by highlighting the factors driving effectiveness and discovering new factors relevant to the South African context. This could in turn provide incubator managers with knowledge to better tailor their offerings to tenants and key stakeholders. This improved value proposition would lead to greater success for all involved.<br>Mini Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2017.<br>zk2017<br>Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS)<br>MBA<br>Unrestricted

Abstract:
In this context, the tasks of specifying and checking compliance at runtime become particularly challenging. In this thesis, our goal is twofold: monitoring and security in the context of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Thus, we proposed a view-based monitoring approach and a framework that target monitoring of business process compliance at runtime. Our monitoring framework aims to offer an easy way to specify properties to be monitored and to facilitate its integration with SOA based environments. Thus, we have developed a new monitoring language called BPath, which is an XPath-based language that offers among others, the ability to express and to check temporal and hybrid logic properties at runtime, making the execution of business processes visible by expressing and evaluating quantitative indicators, in order to detect any compliance violation at runtime. A specific compliance monitoring concern in SOA based environment is security, which is also an important aspect for companies willing to give access to some of their resources over the Web. Thus, we proposed a domain specific language (DSL) based architecture for ensuring security in SOA environments. We particularly focused on access control by proposing a graphical language to facilitate the specification and generation of access control policies. Our approaches are implemented and integrated within a complete end to end compliance framework developed within the COMPAS project

Full text
Abstract:
The alignment of business and information technology (IT) strategy is an important and enduring theoretical challenge for the information systems discipline and has remained a top issue in practice for the past twenty years. The extant literature makes two implicit assumptions. One is that IT strategy is aligned with a single business strategy, either at the corporate level or within a single strategic business unit (SBU). The other is that strategies are developed at a single point in time. Therefore, multi-business organisations present a particular alignment challenge, because business strategies are developed at both the corporate level and SBU levels, and these strategies are developed over time. This dissertation contributes a dynamic, capabilities-based theory of business and IT strategy alignment. Rather than extending existing models, this study draws on theory from the resource-based view of the firm and path dependence to address business and IT alignment within and between corporate and SBU levels across the strategy cycle. A new dynamic alignment model conceptualises IT alignment as the fit between business and IT strategies within the corporate and SBU levels and the coherence between these two levels. Value is created by complementary relationships among business and IT capabilities. IT alignment (or misalignment) is embedded over the strategy cycle, with the degrees of freedom declining quickly over time. The new model is validated using pattern matching with a single critical case of strategy development in a multi-business organisation across a complete strategy cycle. The strong match between the empirically observed and theoretically predicted patterns, and the complex nature of these patterns, provides strong support for the model. The model reconceptualises the way IT alignment drives organisational performance and how IT alignment changes over time. This has implications for existing IT alignment models, providing alternative theoretical explanations of how IT alignment creates value and how IT alignment changes over time. The new model also has implications for practice across the IT investment value chain and its governance.

Abstract:
Many small businesses in the United States declare bankruptcy within the first 5 years of starting operations. Small business leaders may avoid bankruptcy if they would take advantage of the financial benefits associated with entering the business process outsourcing (BPO) market as service providers. BPO service providers in the United States have experienced significant revenue increases since entering this growing market. This multicase study was an exploration of the strategies small business leaders use to enter the BPO market as service providers to increase revenue and reduce the likelihood of bankruptcy in the metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia, area. The multicase population consisted of 4 small business leaders from 3 companies who successfully entered the BPO market as service providers and increased revenue. The conceptual framework for this study was the resource-based view theory. The data collection process included semistructured interviews, interview notes, and company records. Data were compiled and organized, disassembled into fragments, reassembled into sequence of groups, and interpreted for meaning. Methodological triangulation and member checking validated the trustworthiness of those interpretations. Three themes emerged from the data collected: using professional resources and personal skills to enter the BPO market; entering into trade contracts with BPO clients; and establishing and building on relationships with BPO clients. The implications for positive social change include the potential to increase the success rate of small businesses, improve and revitalize the economic and social conditions of the local community by providing jobs.

Abstract:
Corporate strategy is a foundation for companies operations, processes and  the ways in which its various businesses  work together to achieve particular goals.  Scholars and managers  recognize different levels of strategy for organizations. One of  the  differentiations  is  based  on  governance structure of the organization, and divides  corporate strategy on two levels: corporate strategy  and business-unit strategy. In many cases, some might think that business and corporate dimensions are the same. However,  when divided into strategies, there is a difference. This especially relates to MNEs (multinational enterprises), with their massive and sometimes complicated structure  and business units all over the world.  This study intends to find out whether and how corporate strategy as whole is employed and engineered in terms of this differentiation at MNEs, as well as to explore the additional factors   to well-known ones, affecting strategy development on both levels. Even though, a decent amount of studies have been done on a field,  the views on which questions should be answered by corporate level  strategies or business unit strategies are significantly differ. Hence, in order to develop understanding and contribute to the further research, this study has been undertaken.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the legal consequences that space manufacturers face, should their items be defective or should they do not function as intended. The research is segmented in five parts starting with preliminary remarks and gradually focusing on specific issues, such as product liability for space activities, liability of the manufacturer in international programmes, risk management and space insurance.<br>To conclude, it recalls the importance of clear delimitation of liability, whether it is in international legal texts or in contracts, and its natural link with an efficient exploitation and use of outer space notably by private entities.

Alharthi, I. J. "Business schools and universities in Saudi Arabia : a stakeholder view of reputation." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2018. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3018760/.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this research is Saudi Arabian Higher Education (HE), specifically, how business schools are perceived by their key stakeholders. This study enriches the existing body of literature pertaining to Higher Education (HE) in the Saudi Arabian context. It also aims to provide HE policy makers with insights to influence strategic decisions pertaining to business schools in Saudi Arabia in the future, drawing on the concepts of 'stakeholder differences' and 'reputation' The context of the research reveals important findings regarding its contribution and potential impact. All aspects of society and education in Saudi Arabia are influenced by religion and this is set out in the context and later examined in a discussion of how stakeholder views are influenced by the wider societal background. The concept of reputation is the lens through which this study positions and assesses stakeholders' views of business schools. Reputation is examined here in order to fully comprehend its underlying constructs, dimensions and the different ways in which these can be understood. In particular, reputation can be classified here as being based on judgment where stakeholders' own experience determines how reputation is constructed by them, or non-judgment based criteria where an external factor such as accreditation or ranking determines reputation. Methodologically, the research adopts an interpretivist approach, employing semi-structured interviews with individuals from different stakeholder groups including, academics, students, employers, and students' family members. Template Analysis, a specific form of thematic analysis for analysing and interpreting the collected interview data was adopted. The research contributes to methodological practice in this area by using parallel coding, in which English and Arabic transcripts were considered side by side to enhance the reliability of data. The methodology used also exemplifies the phases of Template Analysis and documents the progress from one phase to another. The research makes a significant contribution to our understanding of business education in Saudi Arabia, by demonstrating that business schools and business education in Saudi Arabia have significant distinguishing characteristics that differentiate them from their counterparts in the US and the UK. This is important as it reveals that existing research, mainly conducted in and written from a Western perspective is not entirely applicable to the Saudi context. The study is also the first of its kind to assess a wide spectrum of HE stakeholders in Saudi Arabia to understand their individual perspectives directly. By doing so it identifies potential conflicts of interest, whereby some aspects were viewed positively by some stakeholders and negatively by others. This adds detail and nuance to our understanding of how the reputation of business schools and business education is constructed in Saudi Arabia. This not only provides an interesting research finding but will also be of potential interest to policy makers in this field. The research concludes that for universities and business schools, an awareness of their own reputation and how it is managed could contribute significantly to their operation and further development, and a key outcome from this research is the call to introduce reputation management into the strategic development and policy guidelines for business schools in Saudi Arabia.

Lischka, Andreas. "Business Partnering in HR : reality or myth? : a practitioner view of the parameters for the successful implementation of Business Partnering." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2017. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/5446/.

Full text
Abstract:
Twenty years ago David Ulrich presented a new concept asking HR to move away from administration and routine and to become strategic. By using new technological developments (newly developed software, the internet, and the segmentation of HR services) he created the foundation for HR to become a ‘business partner’. However, contemporary HR departments still seem be dominated by administrative tasks, now executed by new IT systems. This is reinforced by the Roffey Park “Management Agenda 2014” which states that the vast majority of HR professionals view themselves as “too reactive” spending “too much time on unimportant things” (p.33). Working as a consultant in HR I am confronted with these realities and the impact of Ulrich’s model on relationships between HR and its customers. By interviewing experts and surveying line managers and employees, the evidence indicates that the relationship between HR and employees faces disturbances, as benefits from business partnering are not obvious to HR’s customers. Hence, HR is at a crossroads as a function; it can either contribute to business by using current (and future) technological tools, or increasingly lose significance within the business. This research develops an ‘in-partnership’ approach that aims to re-connect HR and business. The in-partnership approach addresses relationships and helps to overcome the segmentation in HR by entering into a dialogue between HR and business. This research therefore provides novel insights into HR by understanding the importance of the relationships with the different communities which need to benefit from Business Partnering, allowing a useful contribution to practice that values the relationships to HR customers, internally as well as externally.

Elias, Marlene, and Magnus Wretlund. "Business Intelligence som del i skapandet av konkurrensfördelar." Thesis, Mälardalen University, School of Sustainable Development of Society and Technology, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mdh:diva-9830.

Full text
Abstract:
When business leaders around the world are about to take a decision, 40% of these decisions are based on gut rather than any rational information. This, together with the claim that “<em>one of the biggest hinders for competitive advantage is acting solely on gut or intuition</em>” leads to the combination of the decision support tool Business Intelligence and competitive advantage. Competitive advantage can be seen from numerous perspectives; one of these is the resource-based view, where the resources are the basic pillar for competitive advantage. From this the thesis study question is formulated; “<strong>How and why can BI, seen from a resource-based perspective, support the creation of competitive advantage, on short and long term, in large companies?</strong>”</p><p><strong>Purpose</strong>: To explain and describe how and why BI, seen from a resource-based perspective, can support the creation of competitive advantage, on short and long term, in large companies.</p><p><strong>Theory: </strong>The theoretical foundation is based upon definitions on BI and what BI really is, together with a presentation and discussion on the resource-based view. Following the BI and resource-based view parts, the research model for this thesis is presented, where a modified resource-based view model for competitive advantage, and a definition collection for BI, is combined.</p><p><strong>Method: </strong>For this thesis, 18 companies where they have some sort of BI solution implemented, has been interviewed. The companies have been selected based from their size, where the 120 largest companies first were contacted with an interview proposal. The companies are based in industries such as media, telephone communications and insurance. On these companies, the individual that is the “BI responsible” has been interviewed, which varies from company to company. BI responsibles could be Controllers, IT Managers or specific BI Managers.</p><p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> In the conclusions part of this thesis the research question is divided into a how part and a why part. One conclusion from the how part, is that BI can both support and drive a so-called patching capability, which means that a company can be faster and more agile in their market adaption. One of the reasons why BI can support competitive advantages from a resource-based view is that it can help to drive efficiency, optimization and process innovation in different capabilities that can lead to competitive advantage. Another conclusion is that despite its abilities to support what drives competitive advantage through the resource-based view, the term for this is mainly short-term, due to the fact that it is not hard to imitate the information, which constitutes the basic resources that BI supports.</p>

Naidoo, Talira. "Business rescue in South Africa: an exploration of the views of business rescue practitioners." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/22141.

Full text
Abstract:
A research report submitted by In partial fulfilment of the Degree: Master of Commerce School of Accountancy 2016<br>Given the seemingly low rate of success of the current business rescue regime (at just 13.6% as at June 2015), this study sought to identify whether the current business rescue regime in South Africa realises its intended objectives and why this meeting of objectives or failure to do so may be the case. It focuses on practical issues and the investigation is undertaken through interviews with business rescue practitioners who are the facilitators of business rescue. The findings show that there is a lack of clarity in the definition of success which may be cause for concern and that, despite its consistency with other jurisdictions, in the views of practitioners, the success rate is expected to improve. The study finds that there is a lack of prompt action when signs of financial distress are noted and a lack of funding for companies in business rescue. The experience of the practitioner has a significant impact on the success or failure of the rescue and may be one of the reasons for the current low rate of success of the regime, while the specific qualifications of the practitioner play a smaller role. The plan is imperative but there is often a lack of information and insufficient time allocated to its preparation. Consistency of Court judgements also has a bearing on success of business rescue, while consistency with provisions of other jurisdictions is not considered to be important.<br>MT2017
