Abstract:

Many studies in public understanding of science emphasise that learning how to do science also involves learning about the philosophical issues surrounding the nature of science. This thesis aims to find out how scientists themselves talk and write about these philosophical topics, and how these topics get used in scientific thought. It contrasts scientists' opinions on these issues with how they are portrayed in popular science, and also contrasts them with how philosophers themselves have justified their ideas. Through analysing how scientists talk and write about philosophical topics, it aims to find out what and how scientists themselves think and learn about the nature of science, and what they would like other people to learn about it. 30 popular science books were analysed for how they treat philosophical topics on the nature of science. 40 academic scientists were then asked in a series of semi- structured interviews questions based on the philosophical topics that were found discussed most often in the books. Five philosophical topics are dealt with in detail: The demarcation question of "what is science", the philosophies of Popper and Kuhn, Occam's razor and reductionism, which reflect the most common philosophical themes in the popular science books. In interpreting the books and the scientists' responses on these topics, I use the concepts of boundary work and boundary objects, and social identity theory. It demonstrates that philosophical topics can be used to draw boundaries and to define social identities around science or various disciplinary affiliations. Philosophies and famous philosophers like Popper also act as boundary objects facilitating scientific communication across boundaries. The talk surrounding the various philosophical categories however often hides a big variation in actual philosophical opinion, which is set slightly apart from how the philosophy itself is discussed.

This thesis deals with the political philosophy of al-Ghazzali from an analytical point of view. It focuses its examination on his theory regarding the imamate and sultanate. This examination is based on four of his works, namely, Fad&dotbelow;a'ih&dotbelow; al-Bat&dotbelow;iniyah wa-fad&dotbelow;a'il al-Mustaz&dotbelow;hiriyah, al-Iqtis&dotbelow;ad fi'l-i'tiqad, Ih&dotbelow;ya' 'ulum al-din and Nas&dotbelow;ih&dotbelow;at al-muluk . It begins with an account of past scholarship on al-Ghazzali's political thought. Until recently scholars have focused on al-Ghazzali's theories without giving due consideration to the circumstances that led him to develop them. This thesis shows how they were shaped by his encounter with the 'Abbasid court and the Seljuq sultanate, and how his own theological and juridical concerns coloured his interpretations. The practical necessity of justifying his concept of the imamate was forced upon him by the challenge posed by the Fat&dotbelow;imid caliph in Egypt, and by the reality of power politics in Baghdad, where the caliph exercised only nominal control. Throughout his writings he demonstrates an overriding concern for a stable society in which Islam can be practiced in full, even at the cost of living under an oppressive system.

Abstract:

This thesis is an attempt to understand the Neutrality Debate, in the light of two basic distinctions: a distinction between political philosophy and politics, and a distinction between three different views of political philosophizing, which I call foundationalism, explanationism and interpretivism. According to foundationalism, the political philosopher starts with an account of what is essentially human and deduces from it moral/political principles, which should govern every human society. According to explanationism, the political philosopher seeks to understand a particular society (e.g. the Western state) sub specie aeternitatis, i.e. as an immutable, autonomous, self-sufficient world of ideas. Similarly, interpretivism focuses on a particular society (e.g. the Western state), but understands it as an ever-changing world of shared conceptions, understandings and self-perceptions, which are unearthed by the political philosopher. Of the three meta-theories only foundationalism and interpretivism are normative (regulative), whereas explanationism is an intellectual exercise. What is commonly known as "state neutrality" is actually three different philosophical positions each corresponding to a different one of the three meta-theories. Given that each one of these three state neutralities makes different epistemological assumptions, their combination into a single (meta-theoretically mixed) argument with the intention of making state neutrality more attractive to a wider audience is flawed from a philosophical point of view. Such an argument is "political" in that it seeks to persuade rather than to demonstrate philosophical truth.

This thesis will explore the ethics of assisted reproduction technologies and human reproductive cloning from an Islamic ethical perspective. Abstract:

Background: Loneliness is associated with numerous detrimental effects on physical health, mental health, cognition, and lifestyle. Older adults are one of the groups at highest risk of loneliness, and indeed about 46% of older adults in England are lonely. Those experiencing loneliness visit their General Practitioner (GP) more frequently than those who are not, which has the capacity to put a strain on GPs and primary care waiting lists and costs. There is some literature on GPs’ experiences of other social problems, but it is yet unknown how GPs in the UK perceive and work with loneliness in older adult patients. Aims: To explore GPs’ views and experiences of loneliness within their older adult patients. Method: A qualitative approach was taken for this research and followed a social constructivist perspective. 19 GPs were recruited using researcher contacts, snowballing, and purposive sampling. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted either in person or over the telephone. Data were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis Findings: Five over-arching themes and 14 corresponding sub-themes were presented. GPs’ definitions of loneliness and its prevalence in our society is discussed. GPs held a medicalised and individualistic view regarding loneliness. They discussed their barriers to raising the topic, as well as the social stigma surrounding loneliness for both GP and patient. GPs felt powerless in their ability to fix the problem, and tended to use self-protection strategies. Further need for GP support and system improvements were discussed. Conclusions: Study findings are discussed in the context of relevant theories and literature. Implications include greater emphasis on social problems like loneliness in GP training, more practical and emotional support for qualified GPs, and a clearer more streamlined approach to managing loneliness presentations in primary care. Strengths and limitations of the study are discussed, and avenues for future research suggested.

This thesis examines the role of prosody and semantics in word order variations in Chinese. In particular, I address the controversial issue of whether overt object scrambling is available in Chinese. I argue that overt object scrambling exists in Chinese on the basis of (i) scope evidence, and (ii) the similarities between the distribution of the object in Chinese and object scrambling in Dutch and German. I show that the distribution of the object in Chinese exhibits prosodic, semantic and discourse information structure effects, similar to object scrambling in Dutch and German (Neeleman and Reinhart, to appear). I suggest that certain differences between Chinese and Dutch/German in the distribution of the object follow from the different word orders in these languages and how the word orders interact with the possibility of stress shift. There is evidence from the distribution of the object(s) in serial verb constructions and double complement constructions that the scrambled object occupies a position within the VP. This study places Chinese among languages such as Dutch and German which allow object scrambling and by doing so, enriches the data base for determining why scrambling occurs. by Hooi Ling Soh. Abstract:

Early Chinese philosophical texts contain discussions of the nature, origins, and possibility of knowledge, in which both positive accounts and skeptical responses to them are couched in importantly different terms to those most familiar from similar discussions in Western philosophy. In place of appeals to truth, belief, and fallibility of the senses, action, discrimination, and difference of perspective play crucial roles. The aim of this dissertation is to explain why this should be so, and what consequences this had for the early Chinese understanding of knowledge. In an attempt to answer these questions, I argue that, likely influenced by both facts about the classical Chinese language and key philosophical trends and interests of the time, discussions of knowledge by early Chinese thinkers generally referenced a broad notion of knowledge that was seen as being closely related to action. Linguistic factors also contributed to theorizing about knowledge focusing not on beliefs or other sentential structures, but rather on the drawing of action-guiding shi-fei distinctions, and the same shi-fei framework that was applied to perception was also applied to knowledge. Language, understood most fundamentally in terms of an ability to distinguish shi-fei and apply names to things in the correct way, also played an important role in the pre‐Qin understanding of knowledge. On a linguistic level, knowledge corresponded to reliably correct language use, and rigid fa (法 standards, models) were seen as underwriting this by providing the standard of correctness. Just as these fa could be used to measure the correctness of individual terms, thinkers interested in the correctness of doctrines and speech in general attempted to apply the same idea to larger linguistic structures such as sentences, in the hope of finding fa for correct language use at a higher level. In doing so, they discovered facts about natural language use that could not be accounted for using the types of fa they considered. Likely in part influenced by similar observations, others called into question the existence and uniqueness of standards in general and the adequacy of language in expressing knowledge. I argue that the prevailing positive view of knowledge ultimately gave rise to an interesting and nuanced form of skepticism grounded in a form of perspectivism. This skepticism does not merely have the negative consequence that we should question some of our knowledge commitments, but can also be used to suggest that – while still doubting – we can make practical use of our skepticism to improve our knowledge by considering a wider range of perspectives. published_or_final_version Philosophy Doctoral Doctor of Philosophy

Abstract:

As the enrollment of Chinese international students (CIS) increased at a private institution in the Midwest, so did suspected cases of plagiarism. This study addressed the problem of how faculty members grappled with CIS' interpretation and application of Western-based views of plagiarism. The purpose of the study was to identify similarities and differences in the views of these 2 groups. Social cognitive theory, intercultural adaptation theory, and neutralization theory framed this qualitative case study. The research questions focused on how these particular CIS interpreted and applied the Western concept of plagiarism to assignments and exams, the impact of classroom practices and instructional processes on their view and experience, how the faculty members experienced CIS' interpretation and use of Western concepts of plagiarism, and respectively the differences in perceptions of U.S. faculty and of CIS. Eight full-time CIS and 8 faculty members who taught or currently teach CIS were purposefully selected. Data were collected using individual interviews, course syllabi, and plagiarism-related institutional policies. The interview data were analyzed using an ecological perspective to reveal themes; these data were triangulated with the data from course syllabi and institutional policies to ensure research credibility. The results of the study indicated a disconnect between student and faculty perceptions of Western-based contextualized plagiarism, the plagiarism ethos, and academic cultural differences between faculty and CIS that led to the creation of a faculty professional development plan using blended learning focused on cultural differences and teaching methods to deter plagiarism. The results may advance positive social change by improving faculty understanding of CIS and educational practices about plagiarism to better service these students.

Abstract:

Breast cancer is increasingly threatening the health of Chinese women. However, little is known about beliefs, attitudes or health practice related to breast cancer among Chinese women in the UK, which means that it is difficult for health professionals to provide evidence-based services to them. Using a triangulation research design, this study investigated the views on breast cancer among Chinese women in the UK. Moreover, factors influencing their views and the factors potentially threatening Chinese women's breast health were also examined. Chinese women who accessed the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK for primary care and were aged from 50 to 70 years were targeted. Twenty-two semi-structured interviews were conducted initially. Based on interview findings, a questionnaire was developed and a questionnaire-based survey was undertaken in a larger population. The findings showed that although negative views on breast cancer were held by the majority of the Chinese women, most women engaged in a healthy lifestyle and actively attended breast screening in order to promote health and prevent breast cancer. Breast cancer views were significantly influenced by the extent to which these Chinese women had been in contact with western culture. Chinese women who were more acculturated to western culture were more likely to hold positive views on breast cancer. Two factors potentially threatened Chinese women's breast health, which were lack of knowledge on breast and barriers to accessing health services. In order to promote early detection, practice nurses in communities need to develop culturally sensitive educational intervention to improve Chinese women's knowledge on breast cancer, in particular on warning signs and risk factors. In addition, barriers to accessing health services need to be tackled. In particular, interpretation services should be provided to those with limited English proficiency.

Abstract:

This thesis describes the development of the Chinese virtue ren 仁 from its earliest recorded occurrences around 1000 BCE to its use in the Song dynasty around 1200 CE, asking the questions: 1) How did the meanings of ren change over time; and 2) How does quantitative textual analysis affect our understanding of ren? I argue that the earliest recorded meaning of ren was most likely “manliness” in the Western Zhou dynasty, that it later came to mean “Goodness,” followed by “benevolence” during the Warring States period, and that by the end of the Song dynasty, it meant transcendental “humanity.” Quantitative textual analysis affects our understanding of ren by supporting and qualifying existing theories, and also by illuminating new areas of research. While prejudice against Jews has been regarded as a real and ongoing category in Western culture, little attention has been paid to the myths of the 'Jews' and their impact in countries outside the West. My work draws on a wide variety of source material from the past two centuries to examine the images of the 'Jews' as constructed in China. However, my interest here does not lie in the determination of the boundary between the real and fictional aspects of these images. Rather, it lies in the implications associated with the 'Jew' as an 'other', which remains a distant mirror in the construction of the 'self ' amongst various social groups in modern China. In China, representations of the 'Jews' and Judaism are very complex. Although these representations seem to correspond to images of the 'Jews' in Europe, it would be superficial to reduce them to purely 'Western influence'. Representations of the 'Jews' have been endowed with indigenous meaning by modernizing elites since the late nineteenth-century. Unlike anti-Semites of Europe who used the language of Jews as the mark of their inferiority, in China the difference of the 'Jews' has been marked by their 'non-Chineseness'. By creating the 'Jews' as a homogenous group, which acts as a constitutive outsider which embodies all the negative, as well as positive qualities, which were feared or desired by various social groups in China, theses Chinese could thus identify themselves as a integrated reference group: a homogenous 'in-group'. They are thus able to project their own anxieties onto outsiders like the 'Jews'. In this respect, it corresponds to a widespread fear, as well as need of an 'other', which can be found in many cultures and societies. The present thesis does not, however, supply the final answer. It is meant to be a historical study in order to point out that the prejudice about the 'Jews' is not merely a 'western problem', it exists in China. It therefore opens a field for general and wider discussions, not only about the 'Jews', but also about other 'marginalised' groups, such as 'blacks' and 'homosexuals'.

Abstract:

This study quantitatively tested whether the strategic preferences of China’s future decision makers are consistent with non-coercive Confucian values. Students at six elite Chinese universities were surveyed to identify beliefs about the character of the international system, when and how it is permissible to use force, and whether morality should constrain state behavior. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to characterize and validate stated beliefs, strategic preferences, and moral reasoning as well as to determine the extent to which they reflected the theoretical Confucian system of values and conception of moral governance. Respondents’ perception of a dangerous, zero-sum, conflict-prone international system was not consistent with a Confucian worldview. Neither was their strong proclivity to use force to counter most any potential threat or when in the state’s best overall interests. There was substantial concern for noncombatants and the intentionality of harming them influenced the morality of doing so. However, moral ideals did not strongly constrain behavior. At the same time, such exceptional necessity also did not tend to make immoral behavior moral. There was also a consistent, strong bias to hold foreign states to higher standards of behavior and morality than the respondents’ own state. The results also showed that the framework of related issues which define and differentiate major IR theories only explained a small portion of respondents’ beliefs about the international system, state behavior, and the role of morality in them. It is likely that respondents’ reasoning about these issues were also influenced by nationalistic beliefs which combined Confucian and political realist ideologies.

As we approach the 21st Century, our society is increasingly being faced with technological advances. One of such areas of advancement is the reasearch involving human genes. The human genome-mapping project(HGMP) started on the first of october 1990 with a group of over 350 labs. but by late 90's, many important advances had been discovered concerning how to improve the human specie. With these advances came ethical questions and concerns.Both moral and legal questions have been raised as to the effectiveness and safty of this technology. It is the contention of this paper to give a clearer meaning and understanding of the ethics of genetic control.As such I will discuss the wide spread fears and anxiety brought about by the introduction of this new technology. To make this aim more comprehensible, I will pay particular attention to Joseph Fletcher and his books on Genetic control, and Humanhood: Essays In Biomedical Ethics. Fletchers ardent support for genetic control has developed worldwide debates from both ethicists and philosophers as to the safty and efficiency of genetic engineering.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to study definitions of freedom in education and compare them to find out similarities and differences. The aim is not to come up with practical applications for freedom in education, but to understand what freedom can be and to find out whether there are similarities or differences between the definitions. The theoretical research question of this study is how freedom is defined in the deschooling philosophy, and the empirical research question is how freedom is defined in education according to the collected data. The theoretical framework is based on deschooling philosophy and on texts mainly written by authors from the 1960s and 1970s, but there are also some texts included in the study produced by some more recent authors. The theoretical framework comes from a very different educational context and era which is why it is not directly compared to Finnish primary education. Hence, this thesis does not aim to criticize Finnish primary education. Freedom according to the theoretical framework exists within limits, and does not mean that students can do whatever they want. What matters in freedom according to deschooling authors is the existence of choice and in particular, meaningfulness of the choices. As freedom exists within limits, the limits are seen as providing security for students who can then safely engage in activities that they are interested in. The data comes from five Finnish primary school teachers who answered open questions about freedom in education. The methodological paradigm is closest to constructivism, but borders on pragmatism. Content analysis was chosen for analysis method, since the data was textual and the research was concerned of the latent thematic content. The analysis is qualitative, but quantitative in the sense that code frequencies are given. Code categories were formulated deductively but revised after trial coding. Four actor categories and seven thematic categories were formulated, after which the segments of data were coded accordingly. The analysis was carried out along the order of the thematic categories, and every code combination was analyzed separately. The findings were summarized to answer the empirical research question. The interpretation indicates that freedom in education is always controlled by authority. Freedom is suggested to include practical choices, and possibilities to affect one’s own education. Limits are seen as necessary, and responsibility is seen as a necessary competence for using freedom. There are both similarities and differences in definitions of freedom, yet the definitions recognize the importance of limits and the role of authority. Security and providing choices are also seen as important elements of freedom. The data suggests that responsibility is a necessary competence for freedom though it does not appear in the theoretical framework. The findings are based on subjective interpretation and therefore, they cannot be generalized more widely. As the main methodological paradigm is constructivism, the thesis does not claim to provide universal results and thus recognizes the subjective rather than objective quality of the study Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tarkastella määritelmiä vapaudesta ja vertailla niitä keskenään erojen ja samankaltaisuuksien löytämiseksi. Työllä ei pyritä löytämään vapauteen liittyviä sovelluksia kasvatusta varten, vaan ymmärtää mitä vapaus voi olla ja pohtia määritelmien eroja ja yhteneväisyyksiä. Teoreettinen tutkimuskysymys tutkielmassa on miten kouluttomuusfilosofia määrittelee vapauden kasvatuksessa, ja työn empiirinen tutkimuskysymys on miten tutkimusaineisto määrittelee vapauden kasvatuksessa. Työn teoreettinen viitekehys perustuu kouluttomuusfilosofiaan, ja teoriaa rakennetaan pääasiassa 1960- ja 1970-luvun kirjoittajien näkemysten kautta, mutta mukana on myös muutamia uudempia aihetta käsitteleviä tekstejä. Teoreettinen viitekehys perustuu hyvin erilaiseen kasvatus- ja aikakontekstiin, mistä syystä sitä ei suoraan verrata suomalaiseen peruskouluun. Näin ollen työ ei tähtää suomalaisen peruskoulun kritisoimiseen. Teoreettisen viitekehyksen mukaan vapaus on olemassa rajoitusten sisällä, joten vapaus ei tarkoita oppilaiden voivan tehdä ihan mitä haluavat. Vapauden kannalta onkin merkittävää valinnanvapaus sekä erityisesti vaihtoehtojen mielekkyys. Rajojen nähdään myös luovan turvallisuutta, jonka avulla oppilaat voivat rauhassa syventyä itseään kiinnostaviin aktiviteetteihin. Tutkimuksen aineisto on saatu viideltä suomalaiselta peruskoulun opettajalta, jotka vastasivat avoimiin kysymyksiin vapaudesta kasvatuksessa. Tutkimuksen metodologinen paradigma on lähinnä konstruktivistinen, mutta osin myös pragmatistinen. Tekstimuotoisen aineiston analyysimenetelmäksi valittiin sisällön analyysi, jossa keskeisiksi nousivat tutkimuksiin liittyvät teemat. Analyysi on laadullista, mutta koodien lukumääristä annetaan myös määrällistä tietoa. Koodikategoriat luotiin teoriapohjaisesti, ja kategorioita korjattiin testikoodauksen jälkeen. Lopulta luotiin neljä tekijäkategoriaa sekä seitsemän teemakategoriaa, minkä jälkeen aineiston segmentit koodattiin tämän mukaisesti. Analyysi tehtiin teemakategorioiden järjestyksen mukaisesti, ja kaikki koodiyhdistelmät analysoitiin erikseen. Löydökset on kirjoitettu auki yhteenvedossa, jolla myös vastataan empiiriseen tutkimuskysymykseen. Aineiston voidaan tulkita kuvaavan näkemystä vapaudesta, jonka mukaisesti vapaus kasvatuksessa on aina auktoriteetin kontrolloimaa. Vapauden nähdään sisältävän käytännönvalintoja, sekä mahdollisuuksia vaikuttaa omaan kasvatukseen. Rajat vapaudessa nähdään välttämättöminä, ja vastuu nähdään tärkeänä kompetenssina vapauden käytölle. Vapauden määritelmissä on eroja ja yhtäläisyyksiä, joskin ne tunnustavat rajojen merkityksen sekä auktoriteetin roolin vapauteen liittyen. Turvallisuus sekä valinnanmahdollisuudet nähdään ensiarvoisen tärkeinä. Aineistosta voidaan nostaa vastuun merkitys vapaudelle, mikä ei kuitenkaan nouse esille teoreettisessa viitekehyksessä. Tutkimuksen tulokset ovat subjektiivinen tulkinta, eikä niitä siten voi laajemmin yleistää. Koska tutkimuksen paradigma on suurelta osin konstruktivistinen, ei tutkimuksella yritetäkään todentaa yleispäteviä tuloksia, vaan tunnustetaan niiden olevan ennemmin subjektiivisia kuin objektiivisia

Abstract:

This thesis examines how Aristotle's theory of friendship deals with differences between persons, given that his paradigm case is that of friendship between men who are excellent without qualification. I argue that because of his teleological understanding of human virtue, Aristotle believes that such men will share a comprehensive set of affective and rational apprehensions of the good; true friends will love and understand each other because of their identity in virtue. I establish my interpretation against a rival view, which sees Aristotle as sensitive to the need for attentiveness to and valuation of differences between friends: while I show this latter view to be exegetically untenable, I suggest that it is informed by modern understandings of individual uniqueness which provide the basis for a critique of Aristotle. Finally, I explore the implications of a 'difference' critique of Aristotle for his understanding of the bonds which unite political communities.
