Abstract:
In the article the views of notable scientists and mujtahids of Islam about sufizm are analyzed. The scholars of the time of the imams and salafis of the four sects highly valued mysticism and respected the Sufis. The ideas of purity and humanity in the teachings of Sufism are relevant in our society. At the same time, one of the main ideas of our national ideology is the study of mysticism in the education of the perfect man

This article considers the railways as a decolonial option for moving toward mobility justice. It views the photographic artwork Trained Man by Ngalkban Australian artist Darren Siwes through a mobilities lens, considering how the artist plays with time and attends to space, making visible what colonial projects of protection and assimilation have attempted to erase. Attending to the truths and imaginaries that reside and move with Trained Man, it draws on the work of Aboriginal and Black artists, scholars, and activists to trace Australia’s past and present colonial history of training Aboriginal people into whiteness. It considers the railways as carrying “two lines of destiny” with potential moving in both colonial and decolonial directions. The article concludes by suggesting that shared spaces such as the railways open possibilities for mobilizing the decolonial project.

Arnel, Iskandar. "The concept of the perfect man in the thought of Ibn 'Arabī and Muhammad Iqbal : a comparative study." Thesis, McGill University, 1997. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=27925.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the concept of the Perfect Man in the thought of both Ibn 'Arabi (560/1165-638/1240) and Iqbal (1877-1938). The concepts of these two figures are analytically compared by way of their views of wujud, the evolutionary process of human being, qada' and qadar, and the classifications of the Perfect Man. In Ibn 'Arabi's system, these concepts are based on wahdah al-wujud and, in Iqbal's system, on his philosophy of Khudi. Although Iqbal criticized many aspects of Ibn 'Arabi's thought, this thesis will show that their concepts of the Perfect Man are quite similar, and that Iqbal was influenced in a number of important ways by Ibn 'Arabi.

Furber, Christine M. "Surviving baby feeding : a grounded theory of midwives' views and experiences." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2005. http://www.manchester.ac.uk/escholar/uk-ac-man-scw:95044.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to use the grounded theory method to discover the main concerns of midwives in relation to their practice with baby feeding, and to identify the processes that are involved in dealing with baby feeding in their day-to-day work. Data were generated from thirty in-depth interviews with midwives who worked in two maternity care Trusts in the North of England. Data were analysed using constant comparative techniques of the grounded theory method. A computer software program (Non-numerical Unstructured Data Indexing Searching and Theorising package) for qualitative data analysis was used to manage and store the analysis. The grounded theory that emerged suggests that baby feeding was not an easy part of these midwives’ work. These midwives were finding ways of dealing with the pressures that were around them, and which they felt, were affecting their practice. Examples of these pressures include the environment where feeding took place, the support and contributions of those around the woman and baby (particularly other midwives), and the beliefs and behaviour of the woman and baby themselves. ‘Surviving’ enabled midwives to feel that they had dealt with baby feeding in their practice and successfully managed their workload. Surviving consists of four main categories: altering proximities of baby feeding, emotionalising baby feeding, struggling with baby feeding, and directing baby feeding. Surviving is not a linear process that is sequential, but cyclical as these categories are inter-related to each other. However, these midwives’ actions created many of the problems that they experienced, therefore the process was perpetuated. The significance of this substantive theory has been explored within the literature related to baby feeding, workers’ functioning in other public service bureaucracies, and research methodology. Implications for midwifery research, practice and policy are discussed. It is suggested that this thesis could contribute to wider health service agendas such as clinical governance, multi-disciplinary working and public health.

Atkinson, Cathy. "Motivational Interviewing and boys' views and perceptions of reading at key stage 3." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2005. http://www.manchester.ac.uk/escholar/uk-ac-man-scw:78211.

Full text
Abstract:
Although affective factors have been regarded as important in reading development, these aspects have attracted relatively little attention from policy makers and researchers. Furthermore, adolescent boys have tended to demonstrate lower reading motivation and engagement than other pupil groups. This thesis investigates reading engagement and motivation amongst Key Stage 3 boys, through materials based on the principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI).The thesis comprises three interlinked studies. In Study One, a whole class, five-session intervention was designed. This was introduced to Year 8 boys attending a single sex school and a quasi-experimental design was developed to measure its efficacy. However, during the piloting and delivery of the sessions, it became evident that the boys' responses to the activities were influenced by socio-cultural factors, group dynamics and classroom practices. Following an exploration of the outcomes in relation to MI theory, an alternative model of enquiry was proposed to further investigate boys' views and perceptions of reading. Study Two involved working with staff in the Learning Support Department. Opportunities to use the materials with individual pupils proved to be limited, restricting further investigation into their usefulness. However, staff focus groups provided information about pupil views and perceptions of reading, offering insights into the boys' educational and socio-cultural contexts and possible explanations for their responses in Study One. The activities, therefore, became a tool for investigating boys' reading within the school, rather than an intervention per se. Once a clearer understanding of school-based literacy practices had been established, in Study Three, findings were presented to boys who had participated in Study One. Discussion groups were held to explore the boys' views about these ideas and discuss possible explanations for the outcomes of the quasi-experimental research. Overall research findings indicated that the factors that facilitated or inhibited boys' reading were the result of complex interactions between socio-cultural influences, peer pressures, gender perceptions and literacy preferences. MI was seen as a useful paradigm for schools to explore both the affective literacy needs of individual pupils and how school-based literacy practices might facilitate reading development opportunities.

Ekström, Sofia. "Pedagogers syn på hur man kan arbeta för att underlätta skoldagen för elever med Aspergers syndrom." Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Arts and Education, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-3029.

Abstract:

I chose the diagnosis Asperger’s syndrome as subject for my graduation paper, because I believe it is relevant to my education. As a future pedagogue I may very well come in contact with children and adolescents diagnosed with different syndromes and I want to be prepared. The purpose of my paper is to investigate pedagogues’ views on how to facilitate school work for children diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome.

In order to find out how school pedagogues work I chose interviews as method for my research. Initially, my idea was to interview five teachers, but during the course of my work my opinion and my choices have changed. My final interview subjects were: three teachers, one assistant and one special pedagogue. These five persons share purpose and goals but use different methods. Their approach, I believe, contains a high level of aspiration towards creating a pleasant school environment where children and adolescents diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome can develop. To cumulate background facts on Asperger’s syndrome and its symptoms, I have used literature and electronic resources.

Upon completing my research it became evident that all subjects interviewed agree that these students need a structured and tranquil environment. To assist a student during the day one can place a schedule on the blackboard that is used by either the entire group or place an individual schedule at the student’s seat. The interview subjects also stressed the fact that as pedagogues it is important to implement flexibility in one’s teaching as well as in one’s planning of classes. It is also important that these children and adolescents are met in a way that matches their abilities and knowledge.

Yancy, Lisa Fleck Uhlir. "Pride and sexual friendship: The battle of the sexes in Nietzsche's post-democratic world." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2008. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc9009/.

Abstract:
This dissertation addresses an ignored [partly for its controversial nature] aspect of Nietzschean philosophy: that of the role of modern woman in the creation of a future horizon. Details of the effects of the Enlightenment, Christianity and democracy upon society are discussed, as well as effects on the individual, particularly woman. After this forward look at the changes anticipated by Nietzsche, the traditional roles of woman as the eternal feminine, wife and mother are debated. An argument for the necessity of a continuation of the battle of the sexes, and the struggle among men and women in a context of sexual love and friendship is given. This mutual affirmation must occur through the motivation of pride and not vanity. In conclusion, I argue that one possible avenue for change is a Nietzschean call for a modern revaluation of values by noble woman in conjugation with her warrior scholar to bring about the elevation of mankind.

As investigações visam compreender as dúvidas e inquietações, que sempre perpassam o pensamento deste sujeito, considerado o representante universal do “homem humano”.
The present thesis aims to investigate the many religious manifestations shown by the   character-narrator Riobaldo, as well as his “unusual” religious views, in the novel The Devil to Pay in the Backlands, by João Guimarães Rosa. The research focuses on a psycho-religious analysis of the protagonist’s lines and of some symbolic episodes of the narrative. The investigations intend to comprehend the doubts and unrests that are always in this subject’s thoughts, considering the universal representative of the “human man”. The psychoanalytical theoretical grounds of Freud, Lacan, Ana-Maria Rizzuto as well as some of their followers support the narrator’s therapeutical practice of narrating his life. Already as an elderly and resting in his hammock, he needs to talk as a way of understanding himself, overcoming his difficulties and “crossing the ghosts” of his existence. His religious views, just like his psyche, and the forms of understanding the world have many sides, which no religion can fully satisfy. But it is through love and prayer that he tries to comprehend reality, for he considers religion as a “thing of the heart”, and his lonely and powerless condition is what makes him believe in God.

Wells, Jennifer. "Lights and shadows: Olive Schreiner's theorising woman." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 1991. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/26508.

Full text
Abstract:
Olive Schreiner is perhaps best remembered for, and was in her own lifetime most famous as the author of, The Storv of an African Farm (1883; a semiautobiographical novel set in South Africa), Woman and Laooor (1911; a theoretical tract on the condition of women and the feminist movement), and numerous "dreams" or allegories (Dreams, 1890; Dream Life and Real Life, 1893; Stories, Dreams and Allagories, 1923). Prominent amongst her other works are her first novel, Undine (1929) and From Man to Mao (1926), an unfinished novel published posthumously which deals with the subject of prostitution — a subject which concerned Schreiner throughout her life and which is a recurring theme in her work. Assessments of Olive Schreiner's work, however, have been plagued by the portrait of her constructed in Samuel Cronwright Schreiner's biography, The Life Qt Qliva Sohrainar and in his "Preface" to The Letters of Olive Schreiner. 1876-1920. As Ruth First and Ann Scott maintain in their biography of Schreiner, CronwrightSchreiner's Life written after Schreiner's death presents Schreiner as "the hysterical personality of the 18803"? They contend that Cronwright, unable to comprehend the complexities of Schreiner's emotional and intellectual constitution, constructed and perpetuated a view of her acceptable to himself by destroying much of the biographical material to which he had access. He was thus able to defuse those aspects of her life and thought which most evaded his understanding and which he could not reconcile with conventional notions of genius - and femininity. In this way, "his presentation of her personality and behaviour created the Olive Schreiner of most subsequent biographies and commentary".

Abstract:
Saull’s two-hour geology lecture, delivered to reformers in riot-torn Bristol in August 1833, was the only one to be reported verbatim in the Owenite and atheist press. This was undoubtedly his stock talk, and designed to be mentally liberating for the marginal men. It fully justified Anglican claims that his socialist geology was outraging Revelation. He started by debunking Scriptural myths supporting the tithe-rich clergy’s authority, as inimical to rational morality and “political elevation”. Replacing them were to be the “immutable truths” of deep-time geology, and a naturalistic account of life’s advancement. This ascent was powered by progressive ecological conditions caused by planetary oscillations, as Sir Richard Phillips had argued. While atheists and socialists routinely claimed, following Holbach, that mankind was “generated by nature”, Saull’s account of how this came about was to cause shock waves. He replaced the old-fashioned steady-state views of nature with a picture of fossil life as an ascending gradation of species. Out went Phillips’ all-at-once production of the entire fauna, as Saull turned the fossil sequence into an evolving lineage. The last, and “most singular of animals, ‘man’,” finally emerged out of the monkey tribe. Mankind had been produced by changed ecological conditions. Robert Owen’s mantra that bettering cultural conditions would generate a more perfect society was being stamped onto nature. Saull’s sources for his ideas are discussed, as are the ultra-radical True Sun’s political squibs on the French transformist Lamarck. Saull’s subsequent discussion of mankind’s rise from savagery is traced to Humphry Davy’s dream sequence in Consolations in Travel.

Full text
Abstract:
Spontaneous, open-ended survey responses can sometimes better reveal what is actually on people’s minds than small sets of forced-choice, closed questions. Our analysis of closed questions and trade-related open-ended responses to 2016 ANES “likes” and “dislikes” prompts indicate that Americans held considerably more complex, more ambivalent, and – in many cases – more negative views of international trade than has been apparent in studies that focus only on closed-ended responses. This paper suggests that contrast between open- and closed-question data may help explain why the effectiveness of Donald Trump’s appeals to trade resentments surprised many observers.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2023, demands for the United Nations to take up a larger role in global tax governance are louder than ever before. Nevertheless, there is not yet a global consensus on the way forward. In this paper we investigate how the United Nations (UN) could create a more inclusive and effective space for international cooperation. We define the current governance architecture as an ‘international regime complex’, emphasising the fact that several institutions govern international tax cooperation, without there being a hierarchy between them. Based on evidence drawn from interviews with 33 government officials (mainly from lower-income countries) conducted from May to July 2023, and from literature reviews on global governance arrangements in other policy areas, we discuss what role the UN could take in this international regime complex.

Abstract:
Aus der Einleitung: Given two ontologies/terminologies collections of terms and their 'meanings' as used in some universe of discourse (UofD), our general task is to integrate them into a single ontology, which captures the meanings of the original terms and their inter-relationships. This problem is motivated by several application scenarios: • First, such ontologies have been and are being developed independently by multiple groups for knowledge-based and other applications. Among others, medicine is an area in which such ontologies already abound [RZStGC, CCHJ94, SCC97]. • Second, a traditional step in database design has been so-called 'view integration': taking the descriptions of the database needs of different parts of an organization (called 'external views'), and coming up with a unified central schema (called the 'logical schema') for the database [BLN86]. Although the database views might be expressed in some low-level formalism, such as the relational data model, one can express the semantics (meta-data) in a more expressive notation, which can be thought of as an ontology. Then the integration of the ontologies can guide the integration of the views. • Finally, databases and semistructured data on the internet provide many examples where there are multiple, existing heterogeneous information sources, for which uniform access is desired. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to relate the contents of the various information sources. The approach of choice has been the development of a single, integrated ontology, starting from separate ontologies capturing the semantics of the heterogeneous sources[Kas97, CDGL+98]. Of course, we could just take the union of the two ontologies, and return the result as the integration. However, except for the case when the ontologies had absolutely nothing to do with each other, this seems inappropriate. Therefore part of our task will to be explore what it means to 'integrate' two ontologies. To help in this, we will in fact assume here that the ontologies are describing exactly the same aspects of the universe of discourse (UofD), leaving for a separate paper the issue of dealing with partially overlapping ontologies.

Abstract:
Jair Bolsonaro has become notorious for his incendiary comments on women and minority rights, and his misogynistic and homophobic views are well-known. His caustic views and “macho swagger” have been amplified by his social media presence and distinctive approach to self-representation. He is without a doubt Brazil’s first “social media president,” echoing in many ways Trump in his use of such platforms. He is often compared to other strongmen — most famously as the “Tropical Trump” — however, his most obvious likeness is President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines.

Abdulkhaliq, Zubeida S. Kakai Religion and the Place of Music and the Tanbur. Institute of Development Studies, January 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/creid.2023.001.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper discusses the historical context and mythic framework of the Kakai religion. While some information regarding Kakai theological views and beliefs may be known to outsiders, many facets of their religious life, customs and traditions remain undisclosed. Much secrecy surrounds this religion, and non-believers are not encouraged to engage in or witness most Kakai rites. Geopolitical instability in the Kurdistan region also makes access difficult. Throughout this paper we will look at the relationship between Kakai beliefs and music (tanburo), and how the tanbur (a sacred lute) is not merely a musical instrument but is seen as a symbol of Kakai identity, with the music preserving language and legend.

Chivers, Melanie, and Howie Jess. EXPLORING RESEARCHERS' VIEWS ON METRICS AND RESEARCH IMPACT INTERNAL REPORT. The University of Waikato Library, September 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.15663/uow.ort01.

Full text
Abstract:
Research excellence is a goal that universities and researchers alike strive for, but how do we identify and measure research excellence? Do quantitative metrics demonstrate the impact that researchers are aiming for? This report details the results of an exploratory case study investigating how researchers responded to a range of quantitative metrics. As a part of their approach, the project team interviewed thirteen academic staff at the University of Waikato across a range of disciplines. A thematic analysis of the interviews was carried out, bringing to light eight dominant themes from the participants’ discussions: • No one-size fits all - impact and excellence varies greatly across disciplines and matter more to some disciplines than others • Lack of understanding of metrics and reliance on h-index • Metrics are subjective and can be gamed • A general nervousness around metrics or disdain, especially for Altmetrics • Cultural considerations and the importance of the collective • Disconnect between what they value and what they think their peers value • Publishing decisions are driven by a diverse range of factors • Varying levels of importance in getting research out into the public including OA This paper argues that metrics can be used as a tool for researchers, but should be understood in the context of non-quantitative measures. Metrics alone cannot determine how impactful a researcher’s contribution may be. It is important for researchers to be recognised as individuals in order for them to tell the story of their work. This will require upskilling both for researchers and those who evalu-ate research.

Webb, Philip. Unsettled Issues on the Viability and Cost-Effectiveness of Automation in Aerospace Manufacturing. SAE International, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/epr2021005.

Full text
Abstract:
The aerospace manufacturing industry is, in many ways, one of the most sophisticated commercial manufacturing systems in existence. It uses cutting-edge materials to build highly complex, safety-critical structures and parts. However, it still relies largely upon human skill and dexterity during assembly. There are increasing efforts to introduce automation, but uptake is still relatively low. Why is this and what needs to be done? Some may point to part size or the need for accuracy. However, as with any complex issue, the problems are multifactorial. There are no right or wrong answers to the automation conundrum and indeed there are many contradictions and unsettled aspects still to be resolved. Unsettled Issues on the Viability and Cost-Effectiveness of Automation in Aerospace Manufacturing builds a comprehensive picture of industry views and attitudes backed by technical analysis to answer some of the most pressing questions facing robotic aerospace manufacturing.
