Full textDRAINMOD was used to simulate the measured water table fluctuations and relative corn crop yields over the growing season. Verification of the model was needed to determine if it could be a useful tool in the design and operation of water table management systems for the Quebec region.
It was found that DRAINMOD output closely simulated the water table fluctuations for conventional drainage and subsurface irrigation plots provided no exceptional circumstances existed. More study is needed in some areas such as bedded fields and in the use of fluctuating water level control structures.

Full textMetribuzin concentrations up to 3.47 $ mu$g/l were detected in the tile drain water. Surface runoff samples had metribuzin concentrations up to 47.086 $ mu$g/l. Aldicarb was not detected in any of the water samples. Fenvalerate was detected in surface runoff at a level of 0.05 $ mu$g/l during the 1989 growing season. Phorate was not detected in subsurface drain water in the 1990 growing season.
Pesticide levels were higher in the surface soil layer (0-5 cm), than at 25 cm depth. Fenvalerate was detected at a level of 0.013 $ mu$g/g in the surface (0-5 cm) soil samples. Phorate concentrations of up to 0.020 $ mu$g/g were detected in soil samples. Aldicarb was not detected in the soil samples. Metribuzin was found mostly in the soil surface layer with concentrations of up to 0.23 $ mu$g/g during the 1990 growing season.

Full textThe study offers an overview of Quebec's past and present immigration and integration policies and programs. It considers those policies in light of identity theory and, more specifically, focuses on the relationships between language learning, integration, and identity in the experience of adolescent immigrants within a francophone secondary school in Montreal. Based on interviews and participant observation conducted over 15 months, the study describes the ways in which the participants' integration and identity are shaped by school discourses and the standardizing imperative of most North American educational institutions. Findings suggest that the participants resist the school's discourses in order to assert themselves dialogically and relocate their sense of identity in their host society. However, the dialogic relationships that the students are able to establish with and within the school discourses are imbalanced, leaving several students to feel dislocated both physically and psychically throughout the study. The study indicates that a distributed notion of the Self might improve theory, policy, and pedagogy related to newcomer integration. Finally, specific suggestions are made for building on current educational-integration research and practice.

Full textPlans for two possible water supply systems designed to provide 180 mm a year of irrigation water for the subsurface irrigation of 1,250 ha in Richelieu County were considered. An economic analysis indicates that subsurface irrigation using groundwater has the greatest net benefits with an internal rate of return of 22.92 % and benefit to cost ratios of 1.90, 1.72 and 1.56 for discount rates of 8 %, 10 % and 12 % respectively. However, much of the groundwater in this region is saline and its use for irrigation may need to be restricted. Subsurface Irrigation using surface water from the Yamaska River was also profitable with an internal rate of return of 17.31 % and benefit to cost ratios of 1.66, 1.46 and 1.30 for the same discount rates.

Full textLaboratory experiments were conducted on large and small undisturbed soil cores to determine pertinent soil properties, relating drainable volume and steady upward flux to water table depth.
A water balance model was developed and used with a stress-day-index to predict water table depth, excessive and deficit soil moisture conditions and effects on corn yield. Economic analyses were made to identify subsurface irrigation/drainage designs which optimize the profit for a corn crop.
A simple method based on first and second order moments was proposed to determine the effects of parameter uncertainty in the relationship of steady upward flux vs water table depth on subsurface irrigation/drainage design parameters.
Based on the above information, a realistic subsurface irrigation/drainage design was proposed and operational recommendations were made for an example field.

Full textThe productivity of individual dairy farms were estimated using data envelopment analysis. The average annual growth rate of productivity was 0.70% with a standard deviation of 2.44% for the 1987--93 period. The Spearman's rank correlation coefficient did not show any significant relationship between farm size and growth rate.
The Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) approach, used for the first time to estimate technical efficiency, performed equally as good as the regression models in modeling the technology especially at the higher levels of output. The efficiency values estimated using ANN were higher than that estimated by ordinary least squares method. The results indicate the existence of significant potential for improving the efficiency of resources on Quebec dairy farms.

Full textOne aim of the present study was to search for genetics variants associated with autism and other related disorders. This study represents the first family-based association study looking at the entire X chromosome using a French-Canadian autistic population, a genetically homogenous group. We found association between autism and markers at two loci. Our results support the existence of a putative gene located on the X chromosome and moreover the founder effect, in the French-Canadian population, may provide greater power to fine map disease genes especially in complex traits.
The second aim of the present thesis was to confirm the involvement of the MECP2 gene in our RTT group of patients. While we confirm the presence of mutations in this gene in our cohort of RTT patients we also demonstrated that clinical stringency greatly influences the mutation detection rate for this disorder.

Full textLand suitable for subirrigation includes uniform sandy textured profiles deeper than 1 m, with hydraulic conductivities greater than 0.5 m/d and lying on a clay layer at approximately 2 m from the surface, and with slopes less than 0.5% and little or no microrelief.
Soils that failed to satisfy the subirrigation criteria and that would most benefit from sprinkler irrigation were identified. These soils had available water holding capacities of less than 7.5 cm per 100 cm of soil. Most of the soils suitable for sprinkler irrigation were shallow sand (50 cm) over clay.
Both the Richelieu and St-Lawrence Rivers could meet the flow demand for the total irrigated area. However, 57% of the subirrigable land is located at more than 20 km from the Richelieu and St-Lawrence and could be more economically supplied by the Yamaska River. The Yamaska River could supply all the subirrigated land in its vicinity (4 900 ha) and part of the land suited for sprinkler irrigation (1 000 ha) 4 out of 5 years. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Full textRole ambiguity appeared to be non-existent in the principalship. Expectations and conflicts were identified with regard to students, teachers, parents, community members, and principal's superiors. The principalship was clearly more a managerial than leadership role. Principals were responders to a series of problems and issues. They orchestrated responses. Instructional leadership was not a part of their role.
Coulibaly, Housseini Diadié. "Drinking water quality and management strategies in small Quebec utilities." Doctoral thesis, Université Laval, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/17867.
Full textThis thesis presents a study of small Quebec municipal utilities (i.e., serving 10,000 people or fewer) and includes three chapters. The first chapter focuses on a portrait of historical quality of distributed water and on management strategies. Concurrently, it puts historical quality and management strategies in relation to certain important water quality parameters. Results show that for surface water utilities using chlorination alone, the mean difference of annual system flushings between utilities that have experienced difficulties with historical quality and those not having experienced such difficulties proved statistically significant. In addition, some agricultural land-use indicators within the municipal territory appeared significantly correlated with coliform occurrences. The second chapter studies the spatial and temporal variation of drinking water quality in ten small utilities. These utilities were divided into two groups: four utilities that had never or rarely served water violating the provincial drinking water microbiological standards and six utilities that very often infringed upon said standards. Results show that the differences between the two groups of utilities are associated essentially with maintained chlorine residuals and heterotrophic plate count bacteria populations in corresponding distribution systems and, to a lesser extent, to the applied chlorine doses. The study includes three distinctive parts: the first one is a portrait of studied utilities’ operational, infrastructure, and maintenance characteristics; the second part is devoted to development of indicators of performance for the same utilities, whereas the last part deals with human and organisational factors. The portrait revealed interesting trends, most of which had been confirmed by utility performance indicators. As for human and organizational factors, they allowed highlighting such issues like educational background, supplementary training, experience, awareness of and preparedness to take up new challenges, and support from local authorities. Overall, this research enabled a thorough investigation of management strategies the most popular with small drinking water utilities and the development of explanatory tools that may usefully guide action from local managers and government bodies.
