Wild animals are vulnerable to environmental noise. In wetlands, wintering waterbirds are easily disturbed by ship noises; however, the behavioral changes of waterbirds in response to different levels of noise are unclear. We simulated the acoustic environment created by ship movement to investigate the effects of ship noise on foraging, vigilance, and flight behaviors of the wintering bean goose (Anser fabalis). In particular, we used a noise playback method to simulate the acoustic environment created by ship operations at various noise levels (i.e., background noise <50 dB, 60, 70, 80, 9

This paper intends to demonstrate that ship safety is currently at the center of intense international activities, undergoing a process of evaluation and change that is likely to yield a new face that bears little resemblance to the past. It is most heartening that changes take place in desirable directions but the need for vigilance is now greater than ever. In exploring this process of change the paper stresses the areas where attention is needed the most and attempts to provide evidence in support of a key argument concerning a gap in the way safety has always been approached. Sustainable growth should not only be beneficial to the shipping industry in the future, but is also an urgent need to respond to resource and environmental crises and strengthen shipping governance. Maritime traffic in Arctic waters is prone to encounter dangerous ice conditions, and it is essential to study the mechanism of ice collision risk formation in relation to ice conditions. Taking the ship-ice collision risk in Arctic waters as the research object, we propose a dynamic assessment model of ship-ice collision risk under sea ice status dynamic association (SDA) effect. For example, taking a shortcut to get a product to market quickly could prove to be a wise decision if it allows the company to learn from customer feedback and then iterate accordingly on the product. But like barnacles on a ship, too much tech debt can slow you down, so be vigilant about managing it.
