PurposeThis paper analyses the incremental housing process developed at Villa Verde, a housing project designed by the Chilean architecture firm Elemental, whose director Alejandro Aravena received the Pritzker Prize in 2016. This project is conceived within a social housing framework and designed as an affordable “half-house” to be incrementally extended by the owners.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is based on research undertaken in August 2017 with data obtained through site surveys, trace analysis, interviews with 32 residents and photographic surveys. The researchers mapped the modifications made by all households at Villa Verde in the four years after occupation.FindingsThe strategy of designing a formal framework for informal additions has generally been successful with most houses undergoing substantial expansion to a high standard of construction. The paper raises concerns regarding the settlement's urban design, response to local climate and the quality of shared open space. We also find evidence of over-development as informal additions extend across front and rear yards that are in some cases fully enclosed.Originality/valueThis project is critiqued within the context of a long series of architectural attempts to harness the productive capacities of self-help housing. Villa Verde engages the freedom to build in a self-organised manner within a formal framework. But what will stop these additions from escalating into a “slum”?

Background:CXCR5+PD-1hifollicular helper (Tfh) and CXCR5-PD-1hiperipheral helper (Tph) T cells play an important role in the pathogenesis of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) by providing help to autoantibody secreting B cells. Whereas Tfh cells typically dwell in the germinal centers of lymphoid organs, Tph cells accumulate at inflamed tissues. An increased frequency of Tph cells and of circulating counterparts of Tfh cells have been described in the peripheral blood of patients with seropositive RA.Objectives:To examine the effect of treatment escalation using biological agents (TNF blockers or abatacept), on the frequency of circulating Tfh (cTfh) and Tph (cTph) cells in RA.Methods:Peripheral blood was drawn from seropositive RA patients with an incomplete response to csDMARDS (n=29) who initiated biological therapy with TNF blockers (TNFb) (n= 17) or abatacept (n= 12), prescribed based on routine clinical practice. cTfh and cTph cell frequencies were determined by flow cytometry of freshly isolated PBMCs at the basal visit and 6 months after starting treatment escalation. For each patient, an age and gender-matched healthy control (HC) was also studied at both time points (n=29).Results:As compared with HC, active RA patients receiving csDMARDs demonstrated a baseline increased frequency of both cTfh and cTph cells. A significant improvement of disease activity as determined by the DAS28 score (ΔDAS28>2.0) was apparent in all of the patients 6 months after initiating biologicals. At that time point, a significant reduction of the previously elevated cTph cell frequency was observed in both treatment groups. However, cTfh cells remained elevated in patients receiving TNFb notwithstanding a good therapeutic response, whereas subjects receiving abatacept experienced a significant abatement of their cTfh cell frequency. Experimental variation of the cTfh and cTph cell numbers in HC was minimal.Conclusion:Abatacept but not TNFb, are able to bring down cTfh cell numbers in RA. This indicates that costimulation blockade can help attain an immunological remission, whereas TNF neutralization may allow a persistent pathogenic germinal center overactivity. La región de los Altos Norte se ubica en la parte noreste del estado de Jalisco dentro de la cuenca de Río Verde en la región Hidrológica Lerma - Santiago. En esta región, el principal producto del sector ganadero es el huevo para plato que representa el 49.8% de la producción total (2013). Gran parte de los residuos generados en la región por la actividad doméstica, pecuaria e industrial no son manejados adecuadamente ocasionando graves deterioros ambientales. En el presente trabajo se comparan los análisis de 20 puntos de muestreo de aguas superficiales distribuidos en los 8 municipios que conforman la región en dos ocasiones (2014 y 2016), detectándose cierto grado de contaminación en los cuerpos de agua estudiados en todos los municipios. Los que presentan mayor grado de contaminación son: Lagos de Moreno, San Juan de Los Lagos, Unión de San Antonio, Villa Hidalgo y en la última evaluación San Diego de Alejandría, los municipios con menor grado de contaminación son Encarnación de Díaz, Ojuelos y Teocaltiche.

La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo monitorear de qué manera se relaciona el establecimiento de Unidades Centinelas Larvarias (UCL) en los escenarios tipo II con la vigilancia y control de Aedes aegypti. En tal sentido se instaló un total de dos (02) UCL distribuidas equitativamente en las localidades de Villa Alejandro y Martha Milagros Baja, dichas UCL fueron Carpas de Lino-Modelo Árabe cuya estructura especifica fue de Lino Pesado de Policioruro de Vinilo tipo PVC-S de medidas ancho: 2 m x largo: 2 m x alto: 2 m, en su interior se dispuso nueve recipientes con agua (barril sansón, balde, tina, cilindro, botella de plástico, lata, florero, depósito de barro y llanta), adicionalmente se midió a diario parámetros físicos tales como, temperatura ambiental, temperatura del agua, cloro residual y pH. Durante abril, mayo y junio del 2014 las UCL registraron un total de 30 larvas de Aedes aegypti en la localidad de Martha Milagros Baja y ninguna en la localidad de Villa Alejandro, demostrando que en un radio primario de 100 m y un radio secundario de 400 m se puede detectar la presencia y/o ausencia del vector Aedes aegypti. El monitoreo también reconoció la preferencia de recipientes tipo “cilindro y llanta” elegidos por la hembra grávida para ovipostura y posterior criadero de larvas, aunque las localidades de Martha Milagros Baja y Villa Alejandro no se encuentran alejadas geográficamente, presentan ecosistemas totalmente diferentes debido a que las temperaturas ambientales registradas en Martha Milagros Baja exceden en 8.6°C (en la máxima) a la localidad de Villa Alejandro, esta característica puede estar vinculada a la poca altitud de la zona y a la mínima circulación de vientos que solo concentran aún más el calor.

This chapter examines how DEMUS wove interculturality into its feminist human rights work as it sought to address the challenges involved in cases of sexual violence during the internal armed conflict. When the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Committee (PTRC) finished its mandate to research the causes and consequences of the internal armed conflict, it submitted the final report with recommendations for reform and reparations to Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo and passed forty-seven human rights cases to the state prosecutor. Women who decided to pursue their cases through Peru's judicial system are currently represented by feminist and human rights organizations. This chapter considers how DEMUS confronted the legacy of colonialism and describes subsequent efforts to rework its project on the Manta and Vilca case of sexual violence given linguistic and sociocultural gaps.

Esta catástrofe cultural es un síntoma del modo en que la metrópoli evoluciona, atolondrada, ¿a la deriva?. “Que la vivienda unifamiliar como tema sea el tubo de ensayo, la preparación microscópica de las grandes experiencias”. La casa Guzmán supone la resolución de constantes preocupaciones sobre el habitar. Allí, Sota materializó temas como la relación del hombre con la naturaleza, el orden y libertad de circulaciones, la flexibilidad espacial, y tantos otros temas que se traducen y reflejan en la arquitectura de mayor escala, en la propia ciudad. ¿Donde estamos pues los arquitectos? Somos los responsables del devenir de nuestro Patrimonio, de la salvaguarda de la buena arquitectura y de la evolución constante de nuestra ciudad. El Patrimonio del Movimiento Moderno se hace frágil en este discurso. Apostemos por el, por nuestra cultura. Anticipémonos, como Le Corbusier en la salvaguarda de la Villa Savoie, con actitud productiva. La conservación de nuestro Patrimonio y por tanto el incremento del valor de la urbe comienza por la formación. Ya es mucho el camino recorrido, por organismos como Docomomo o la Fundación Alejandro de la Sota, que difunden y hacen accesible la arquitectura del siglo XX. Pero todavía hay mucho camino por recorrer, sigamos el consejo de Sota: ”Proteger el patrimonio no con ordenanzas, sino con sensibilidades es el único camino”.
