Abstract:
In 1807, Napoléon bought the prestigious Borghèse antiques collection for his museum. It was installed in the Louvre, but our knowledge of it was, until now, incomplete and questions remained. How many and what type of objects were bought by the French government? Could we identify in the Louvre the objects belonging to this collection? Where were these objects originally from? Who purchased them and why? How much was spent? Three studies answer these questions by mainly using archived documents. (i) The catalog is an inventory of the purchased antiques and states in which collections they can be found. (ii) The archeological reconstitution of the 1807 building façades décor relocates the moved objects in their initial frame, a frame that is reconstituted in a neoclassic unknown state. (iii) Research on Visconti’s thoughts surveys his mission as an antique dealer, reestablishes his work on preparing and estimating the collection acquisition and offers the portrait of this renowned antiques expert. The archived files of the antiques collection acquisition are available on the attached CD
