Abstract:
Wrzeszcz is one of the oldest suburban districts, incorporated into Gdańsk in 1814. In the nineteenth century, the district gained railway and tram connections and it developed dynamically. Rural buildings quickly gave way to manor houses, new villa districts were created. In the picturesque surroundings of forested hills, new eclectic villas were built along Jaśkowa Dolina Street. Most of them survived World War II and still enchants us with their beauty.

ABSTRACTExcavations by Chichester and District Archaeology Society on the site of a Roman villa at Warblington, near Emsworth, Hampshire, revealed a small stone cist containing two lead packages. While interpretation as a burial is explored, it appears more likely that the cist and its contents represent a ritual deposit within a domestic structure.

Abstract:
Mining is one of the most important industrial activities worldwide. During its different stages numerous impacts are generated to the environment. The activities in the region have generated a great amount of mining residues, which have caused severe pollution and health effects in both human population and biotic components. The aim of this paper was to assess the impact of mining activities on biotic communities within the district of Villa de la Paz. The results showed that the concentrations of As and Pb in soil were higher than the national regulations for urban or agricultural areas. The bioavailability of these metals was certified by the presence of them in the roots of species of plants and in kidneys and livers of wild rodents. In regard to the community analysis, the sites that were located close to the mining district of Villa de la Paz registered a lower biological diversity, in both plants and wild rodents, aside from showing a change in the species composition of plant communities. The results of this study are evidence of the impact of mining on biotic communities, and the need to take into account the wildlife in the assessment of contaminated sites.

AbstractA vitric fiamme containing BaO-bearing sanidine (BaO = 11 wt.%) was sampled (via di Fioranello, Rome) in the pyroclastic products of the Lower Flow Unit (LFU) belonging to the Villa Senni Eruption Unit in the Colli Albani Volcanic District (Roman Comagmatic Province, Central Italy). The fiamme of the LFU is essentially made up of glass, in which scarce phenocrysts of BaO-bearing sanidine, leucite and Al2O3-bearing Ca-clinopyroxene occur. In this paper the various parameters controlling barium partitioning between alkali feldspar and LFU liquid, are discussed.

Abstract:
This research provides a characterization of ancient Roman mortars from “Villa del Capo di Sorrento” (commonly known as “Villa di Pollio Felice” or “Bagni della Regina Giovanna”). A deepened analysis of cementitious binding matrix and aggregates was conducted with the aims of determining possible sources of raw materials and the mix recipe, and to evaluate the minerogenetic secondary processes. Twenty samples taken from the Villa were investigated by means of a multi-analytical approach, including polarized optical microscopy on thin sections, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy analysis, energy dispersed spectrometry, simultaneous thermal analyses, and mercury intrusion porosimetry. Bedding mortars were made with slaked lime mixed with volcanic materials, whereas coating mortars were made adding to previous recipe as ceramic fragments. All samples were classified as hydraulic mortars. Cementitious binding matrix was characterized by gel-like C-A-S-H, calcite, hydrocalumite, and gypsum, deriving from lime/pozzolanic material. Geomaterials used for mortar production had a local origin. Pozzolanic materials, such as volcanic fragments, scoriae, pumice, and crystal fragments derived from both pyroclastic rocks of the Campi Flegrei district and from rocks of the Somma-Vesuvio complex; porosity test suggest that the products related to minerogenetic secondary processes, make mortars more resistant.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Year 2016, The Social Progress Imperative design the Social Progress Index (SPI), model that is being used as a global tool to messure the welfare of people taking into consideration three dimensions that analyze social and environmental results, first dimension is Human Basic Needs, which search if essential society needs are fullfiled, the second is Walfare Basics which study the essential elements to allow people and communities to grow and manteined their well-being and finally, the dimension of opportunities that shows if there are enough oppotunities for people to achieve its full potential, these three dimensions are divided in four componets each. This reseach aims to calculate and analyzed the Social Progress Index (SPI) in the distric of Villa el Salvador to messure quality of life of its population. The SPI results for Villa el Salvador District was 59.29 points of 100 positioning in Social Progress Medium Low. From the three dimension analyzed in the District, the highest score is in dimension Basic human Needs with 68.16 points with social progress Medium High position, standing out componets as wáter, basic sanitation, dwelling and public services. Dimension Walfare Basics obtain the lowest score with 49.71 with Low qualification, at this point, special attention should be paid to the environmental sustainability components and access to basic knowledge. Oportunity dimension stands in the second place with 60.00 score qualified as Medium Low, where stands out personal freedom and choice, getting lesser score access to higher education, in that sense, authorities should focus on this component. In comparison with the analized district in this reserah, we took the adjacent Chorrillos District, which SPI is 57.43, slightly beneath from Villa el Salvador District however both are in the same rank of level of social progress, medium low; whereas on the other hand as compared with San Isidro District, which belong to level of social progress high, with 83.02 of qualification, evidencing two different realities.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the transfer of Vilna and the surrounding district to the Lithuanian republic in a 1939 treaty. After this transfer, the Lithuanian republic annulled the previously operating Polish laws and introduced its own legal system. The new Ministry of Education announced that under Lithuanian law the kehilah of the Jewish community, which had exercised authority during Polish rule, would have to be re-elected in May 1940. As a consequence, the kehilah's structure and its operating rules would be changed. This led the leaders of the Jewish community to petition that kehilah's status as a legal entity be restored and to allow it to continue its activities as under the laws of the former Polish state.

Abstract:
There has been a long-standing tendency to divide Roman Britain into just two regions. This simplistic view goes back toHaverfield’s (1912) ‘civil’ and ‘military’ districts, and Fox’s (1932) ‘lowland’ and ‘upland’ zones, and the persistence of these binary characterizations contributes to the impression of homogeneity in Romano-British landscape character (Collingwood 1930; Frere 1967; Salway 1981, 4–5). Dark and Dark’s (1997) substitution of the term ‘villa landscape’ for ‘civil zone’, and ‘native landscape’ for ‘military zone’, simply reinforces this over-simplification. While there have been many discussions of local distinctiveness within the Romano-British landscape, this has all too often been within the context of modern counties (e.g. papers in Thomas 1966a), and Taylor’s (2007a) use of twenty-first century units of regional government was no better (his ‘South East’ region, for example, stretches from Kent to the foot of the Cotswold Hills and embraced regions of very different character in the Roman period). In An Imperial Possession Mattingly (2006) moves the debate on a long way, in discussing how three ‘communities’—military, civil (urban), and rural—interacted with each other in different regions, although his 621-page book, which is so rich in ideas, contains just fifteen very small-scale maps, reflecting how our understanding of regional variation in landscape character is not as well advanced as it is for the medieval period. The need to improve our understanding of regionality within Romano-British society across eastern England has recently been highlighted as a priority in the Research Framework for this region (Medlycott 2011b, 47); the following three chapters will hopefully go some way towards achieving that. The Roman Conquest brought about a transformation of lowland Britain as it was progressively drawn into the Roman world. One effect of this is an archaeological record that appears, at first sight, remarkably homogeneous, with the landscape apparently characterized by towns and villas, the economy seemingly dominated by market-based trade, and material culture increasingly using a relatively uniform repertoire of forms.

Abstract:
Castanheiro do Vento is an archaeological site with an occupation that covers the entire 3rd millennium and the first half of the 2nd BC. It’s located in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, district of Guarda and has been investigated by a vast team. With this paper, we intend to present some reflections on how to build in Castanheiro do Vento and share some ideas on the relationship between doing architecture on the site and the idea of architecting a larger space, a territory. If we accept that building is a way of being in the world, architecture will always have connections to that world and consequently to its organization. It is important to bear in mind that during recent prehistory, the landscape of the Alto Douro was being changed by communities in the process of consolidating an agro-pastoral system. This territorialization process led to a diversified occupation of the landscape. Some points of this landscape were marked by the construction of walled enclosures, others, which are almost invisible and still others, which occupy great natural markers of the landscape.

Abstract:
The complex social and administrative fabric of Anglo-Saxon England existed largely without urban environments. Based upon patterns of naming, this chapter examines relationships between local administrative districts (hundreds) and central places, arguing for the long-term persistence of pre-urban modes of social organisation in Anglo-Saxon England. Following a review of urban development in Anglo-Saxon England, neglected material is brought to bear on long-standing notions of urbanism which emphasise the progressive nucleation of social and administrative functions as a linear measure of social complexity. A new perspective is offered here which emphasises the limited extent of urban development in England before the 12th century and the robust nature of non-urban social complexity as a social system. Overall, the applicability of measures of social and administrative complexity drawn from ‘primary’ complex societies is questioned and a plea is made for approaching European post-Roman societies on their own terms rather than by comparison with ancient and classical ones.

Abstract:
This is a study of the territorial structures within which past communities managed their landscapes. Today, we live our lives within a complex hierarchy of administrative units that includes parishes, districts, counties, and nations, and while some of these are recent in origin, others are deeply rooted in the past: most parts of England, for example, still have counties that are direct successors to the shires recorded in Domesday and which still form the basis for our local government. These territorial entities are an important part of our history, giving communities a sense of place and identity, and this book will explore where this aspect of our landscape has come from: might county names such as Essex— meaning the ‘East Saxons’—suggest that they originated as early Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, and if so, what was the relationship between these kingdoms and the Romano-British civitates and Iron Age kingdoms that preceded them? The idea that the landscape all around us has a long and complex history is a familiar one. For a long time, however, continuity stretching back to the Roman period and beyond was thought to be rare. Archaeologists and historians have argued that once Britain ceased to be part of the Roman Empire, its economy collapsed, and it was not long before hordes of Angles and Saxons sailed across the North Sea and dispossessed the Britons of their land. This was thought to have marked the onset of the ‘dark ages’ before the flowering of a new era of civilization—the ‘Middle Ages’—a few centuries later. Although this was the view when Hoskins (1955) wrote his Making of the English Landscape, it is noteworthy that in the same year Finberg (1955) published a short paper speculating that there may have been considerable continuitywithin the landscape at Withington in Gloucestershire. Overall, however, while some Romanists saw a degree of overlap and continuity during the Anglo-Saxon colonization, most saw the fifth century as one of dramatic change reflected in the apparent desertion of most towns and villas, the collapse of market-based trade and manufacturing, and the introduction of entirely new forms of architecture, burial practice and material culture (see Esmonde Cleary 2014, 3 for a historiography).
