Full textTo the architect Le Corbusier (1887‐1965), the habitation was more than a mere building: it was part of a comprehensive typological concept which concerns technological and social innovations, and all the other transformations caused by life in the machine age. The special configuration strategy that Le Corbusier started with the structure Dom‐ Ino and Citrohan structures influenced all the architectural production starting from the 1920s. This work proposes to analyze the residential theme taking as bias the corbusian projects and publications, which reflect his ideals for the formation of the concept of the Machine for Living. Taking as principle that Le Corbusier creates his own compositional types, works on them, reinterprets and perfects, we analyze two works which are considered icons within the architect's production: Villa Savoye (1928, Poissy) and Curutchet House (1948 , La Plata). The Villa Savoye as an ideal situation, for being the concrete manifestation of the “Five Points of New Architecture” published in 1927, a refuge built on a large lot of bucolic landscape Curutchet House as a real situation, for manifesting as a revision of the Five Points, which become ten when added to the new researches from the post‐war period, demonstrating the corbusian maturity and allowing its insertion in a smaller lot in an already consolidated urban fabric. The approach occurs from an analysis matrix composed of two structuring axes: a horizontal axis and a vertical axis. The first corresponds to the analysis of the corbusian speech considering the chronological aspects of its architectural and textual work, highlighting the historical contexts in which are inserted the two works selected for this investigation; the second axis corresponds to an analysis of the corbusian syntax along with the typological and compositional concepts presented in both selected samples.

Full textWith this work, the urbanity rating can emerge in Savoy which was rural between 1536 (Geneva's Independence) and September 1792 (Savoy's invasion by French revolutionary troops). The first part highlights a corpus of towns, market towns and small towns, from the contemporary stories. Secondly, it states the urban development conditions. The urban Savoy has very small towns, the resort of them generally dwells on important rural territory and population. During this time, this cities show a demographic low growth, or even negative for lots of market towns. The towns in Savoy are characterized by some specifics features in the urban demography like more mortality, more femininity, less enlarged and multiple families...).The exam of the administrative, religious and cultural duties reveal an urban hierarchy dominated by Chambéry and to a lesser extent by six provincial town's capitals. The military duty is insignificant, except Montmélian. The towns in Savoy, even if they are locate on an international junction, lack opportunity on economic level. Without enterprising and enough well-off elite, because of duchy’s chronic poverty and politics reticence, they don’t know how to catch a part of European trade and they don’t accomplish economic starting up. The second part talk about the town’s convenient. The study of the urban environment outlines some rural towns and dependent deeply natural conditions. The lack of financial means and other inertia have stop the urban direction ins to send of the towns to the medieval rigidity, even if some new town planner appears at the end of this period. The social custom of the town is also envisaging. It highlights cohesion’s factor which link the urban society, but threats which influence the social order too, and rate close to those of the countryside. The third part tries to assess openness capacity of the town’s in Savoy. It’s interested in competition, dependence and complementary notions, between the towns and the countryside, between cities duchy, and between the last and the big bordering cities, like Geneva, Lyon, Grenoble and Turin. In addition, by his geographic situation, the Savoy presents some border towns which characteristics are state. A board of the urban network in the Savoy in modern era will conclude this study

Full textThis thesis focuses on Palestinian youths in Ramallah, which is, since the Oslo Accords of 1993, the temporary capital of the Palestinian non-State. They are not originally from the city, but they are living there in order to study, work or simply spend their time. Their discourses, their daily practices and trajectories divert from the social and moral norms that dominate Palestinian society. Surrounded by three refugee camps since 1948 and by three Israeli settlements, Ramallah urbanity has known considerable changes, on a social, demographic and urbanistic level that have increased inhabitants heterogeneity. In this context of social and political violence, they are submitted to different and sometimes contradictory injunctions linked to Israeli colonisation, but also to their family, neighbourhood and their peers. They learn to modulate their behaviours according to the situations in order to find a form of autonomy. Based on an intensive practice of participant observation during four fieldworks from 2012 and 2019, this research observes two different urban orders (of visibility and invisibility), which are set in private spaces (homes and flats) as well as public (streets) and semi-privates ones (coffee shops, bars, restaurants and university). Between transgression and conformation, the daily practices of these youths contribute, from the margin of the city, to the development of parallel urban forms

Full textThis thesis presents a sociology of the construction of a Utopia in a berbérophone province of Algeria, Bejai'a. The case study in question concerns the revalorisation of a local and national patrimony, undertaken by a group of mathematicians (GEHIMAB, Groupe d'Études sur l'Histoire des Mathématiques à Bejaia au Moyen Age). The analysis attempts to account for the consecration of the group that originated this enterprise, via an understanding of the trajectories of the actors. It locates the project in the objects upon which it works, the personalities in which it is invested, and the strategies which it follows. The approach adopted is sociological, but several disciplines contribute to the argument. The first part of the thesis presents the theoretical approach and sociological method employed. The second presents a sociology of the actors in question. The third part deals with the discovery of a manuscript library and the uses to which it, and its contents, are put, demonstrating both the status of written knowledge and lettered learning, and the symbiosis that existed between the written and the oral. The fourth part of the thesis pertains to the multiple dimensions of the city

Full textCombining history of knowledge, cultural history and historiography, this study analyses how a field of knowledge, archaeology, is built up, in colonial Tunisia as weIl as after its independence. How is this acadeInic discipline, which rightly daims a scientific legitimacy, enlisted in argumentations which support imperialist or national daims? How do the definitions of identities and heritage evolve in such significantly different contexts as the colonial and national periods? This approach combines historical and anthropological methods, analysing specific case studies, and is based on a wide and varied documentation -scientific literature, archives surveys, field work, etc. The genealogical links at work which began in the 19 th century and are today made more complex due to the internationalisation related to the expansion of tourism, are interpreted through a set of thematic chapters' mixing diachronic points of view and synchronic analysis. Institutions, the hidden face of this activity, archaeologists, archaeological sites and finally the return of the Ancients, make up the different fields of observation from which the ties between archaeology and present are analysed. In what strives to be a contribution to the history of cultural relations between France and Tunisia, we support the thesis that archaeology is a human science which neglects itself and of which the et1ects on society have particularly serious consequences

Full textWith the establishment of a press at University of Paris in 1470, the history of printing presses in the French speaking world began. One of the founders was the German scholar Johannes Heynlin von Stein. He marks the start of a historically significant development in which printers from the Holy Roman Empire are of central importance. In the 15th century, it were in fact German printers who took the initiative to establish printing presses in eleven out of forty French cities. Geographically, those presses were predominantly located in the southeast of the French Kingdom and in the Duchy of Burgundy, in the Palatinate County of Burgundy, as well as in the region of what is today the French-speaking part of Switzerland. This media-historically important transition is the focus of this dissertation. On the basis of a profound methodology rooted in the history of materiality, the thesis shows that printing presses must be understood as an intersection of different developments. A comprehensive examination of the biographies of the respective printers and their printing portfolios are presented. Additionally, this thesis records the university, urban and monastic environment of the presses and critically evaluates the printed editions. By doing so, it is possible to work out in detail – while always referring to the sources – the complexity of the transition from a period of manuscripts to a period of printed books. Hence, a transition from non-typographic to typographic societies. Finally, this thesis proves that the German printers were a communicative and trans-border networked group which exemplarily stands for the French and partly for the European history of the printing press in the 15th century. By precisely and extensively analysing one of the most important groups of printers in the 15th century, this thesis allows for new insights to the history of early French printing presses and therefore seeks to fill a gap in academic literature. Furthermore, it encourages an international and scientific dialogue
