Johnson, David Michael. "THE GOOD VILLAIN." MSSTATE, 2008. http://sun.library.msstate.edu/ETD-db/theses/available/etd-04012008-102317/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Good Villain is the first 100 pages of a novel in progress. The novel is a parody of the biography genre and a satire of American culture, specifically Southern American culture. The biographer, David Johnson, travels to Starkville, Mississippi to interview and interrogate fictional author, Avis James, and his friends and family. The critical introduction of the same name describes how authors Lewis Carroll, Edgar Allan Poe, and Vladimir Nabokov have influenced the novel in terms of the whimsical, the grotesque, and the humorous.

Abstract:
<p>WILLIAMS, SUNDEE KATHERINE. Jack Johnson: Victim or Villain. (Under the direction of Dr. Linda McMurry, Dr. Pamela Tyler, and Dr. Walter Jackson.)Jack Johnson reigned as the first African-American heavyweight champion of the world from 1908 until 1915. Unfortunately, unlike future African-American athletes such as Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson, Jack Johnson infuriated Americans of all ages, classes, races, and sexes with his arrogant attitude; his expensive and usually imported automobiles, champagne, and cigars; his designer clothes and jewelry; his frequent trips to Europe, usually in the company of at least one beautiful white woman; his inclination to gamble and race sports cars; and his many well-publicized nights of dancing and playing jazz on his prized seven foot bass fiddle. However, his worst offenses, during his reign as heavyweight champion, were his two marriages to and numerous affairs with white women. The purpose of the research has been to place Jack Johnson within the context of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century culture, economics, law, politics, race, and sex. The influences of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century American commercialization, immigration, industrialization, and urbanization on perceptions of femininity, masculinity, sexuality, and violence are investigated; and the implications of Jack Johnson?s defiance of racial and sexual constraints on the African-American community are interpreted.<P>

Marino, Kelli Rae. ""Someone, Anyone": Contemporary Theatre's Empathetic Villain." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/193253.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the course of theatre's history, villains had stereotypical traits: revenge, greed, and power. Contemporary villains, though, evoke more empathy and sympathy from audiences than classic villains. In an effort to understand the roots of villainous behavior in contemporary characters, this thesis surveys a few notable classic villains to help compare the classic to the contemporary. While holding on to qualities of the classic stereotypes, contemporary playwrights create frequent moments of sympathy and empathy for villains who appeal to audiences' desires to connect, justify, and understand the reasons for their villainies. This thesis investigates despicable yet empathetic villains in three plays: Tony Kushner's Angels in America, Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane, and Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's Assassins. An analysis of the playwrights' manipulation of characters and traits, as well as audience expectations, provides a theory on the new villain type and the lessons that can be learned.

Ioannou, Maria. "Hero or villain? : criminals' experience of crime." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2006. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/13629/.

Full text
Abstract:
A neglected area of research within criminality has been that of the actual experience of the offence for the offender. The social science literature contains only scattered evidence of what it means, feels, sounds or looks like to commit a particular crime. Katz (1988) in his work Seductions of Crime proposed that empirical research has to focus on the foreground, rather than the background of crime and that the emotional significance of crimes needs to be considered more fully in order to understand the psychological processes that sustain and encourage cnme. This research examines and proposes a model of Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE) by exploring the emotions that criminals experience and the narrative roles that they act out across a broad range of crimes. Hypotheses and a series of questions were derived from the Circumplex of Emotions (Russell, 1997), Frye (1957), Narrative Theory (McAdams, 1988) and its link with Investigative Psychology (Canter, 1994). The analysis was based on 120 cases. Convicted for a variety of crimes, incarcerated criminals were interviewed and the data were subjected to Smallest Space Analysis (SSA). Results showed that the emotions reflected the circumplex structure of emotions postulated by Russell (1997) for non-criminal experiences. Thus, it was possible to identify four themes in relation to emotions: Elation. Calm. Distress. and Depression. However, they showed a stronger distinction between pleasure and displeasure than for the normal range of noncriminal experiences. with Russell's 'arousal' dimension being less clearly differentiated. In addition, criminals' emotions were found to be more intense than these of a "normal" population. Concerning criminal narrative roles four distinct themes were identified. These themes are: Adventurer. Professional. Revenger and Victim that reflect Frye's (1957) four story forms (Mythoi): Comedy, Irony, Romance and Tragedy. Further analysis showed that the emotional experiences are thematically significantly associated to the narrative roles, a finding that was supported both by statistical tests and Smallest Space Analysis. When both emotions and narrative roles were subjected to SSA four themes of Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE) were identified: Elated Adventurer, Calm Professional, Distressed Revenger and Depressed Victim from which scales with very high alpha reliability scores could be derived. Offenders' criminal history using the 042 Self-Report Offending Questionnaire (Youngs, 2001) was examined in relation to their Criminal Narrative Experience. Smallest Space Analysis showed that the d42 offending behaviours could be differentiated according to four themes: Violence, Dishonesty, Antisocial and Planning. Statistical tests revealed that the Elated Adventurer theme is significantly correlated with the offending behaviours of Planning, Dishonest and Antisocial while the Calm Professional with Planning. By examining differences between the index cnme and Criminal Narrative Experience analysis showed that different subsets of crimes were more likely to be associated with different emotions and narrative roles. The themes that reflect Criminal Narrative Experience were found to differentiate between different types of crimes. In broad terms, Elated Adventurer and Calm Professional were found to be associated with property offences (theft, burglary and robbery) and be experienced more pleasant than Distressed Revenger and Depressed Victim that were found to be associated with crimes against the person (sex offences, violence and murder) and experienced unpleasant. The implications of these findings for understanding crime on the basis of the Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE) are discussed. Important future directions for the study of crime are outlined.

Faria, Paula Soares. "The journey of the villain in the Harry Potter series :: an archetypal study of fantasy villains." Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/ECAP-7LQEGY.

Full text
Abstract:
Fantasy has featured in our culture since the beginning of times. From ancient mythology to futuristic Sci-Fi, stories have been filled with fantastic characters and settings. Disguised under the cover of the fantastic there is a heavy load of symbolism being conveyed through structures called archetypes. The idea of archetype as a symbolic structure which is repeated countlessly over time and space was identified and studied by the psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung and these archetypes can be recognized in many forms of art or even in dreams. Fantasy usually has archetypes as its basic structure. The symbols expressed as archetypes are supposedly understandable through cultures, and yet, each culture may express the same archetype in different ways. An important archetype that too often features in fantastical stories is that of the hero. Joseph Campbell has explored it, based on Jung's archetype theory, and called the pattern that composes heroes worldwide the Monomyth or the hero journey. This journey can be clearly seen in stories from ancient folk-tale and mythology to contemporary works, which is the case of the Harry Potter series. A literary phenomenon of the 21st century, the Harry Potter series tells the story of a boy wizard and his journey into herohood. In every hero journey, its pinnacle is reached in the confrontation with an arch(e)-villain. Every step in the journey bears a symbolic significance and the villain as part of that journey follows the rule. The villain is mostly the force to which the hero has to oppose, he is also a representation of the unknown; therefore this character is usually presented without a past or reason to be. However, the villain in the Harry Potter series, Lord Voldemort, lives his own journey; one which is incredibly similar to the archetypal journey lived by the hero, Harry. This thesis studies the archetype of villains in fantasy literature and the journey of the hero as it can be related to the villain in the Harry Potter series. This study is based on the archetypal the ory of C. G. Jung and on the pattern traced for the hero by Campbell. The journeys of both villain and hero are compared for the proposition of a contemporary understanding of the villain archetype.<br>XXX

Blackwelder, Kevin. "MY, CLAUDIUS: A CASE AGAINST THE KING AS VILLAIN." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2010. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2159.

Full text
Abstract:
The role of Claudius in Shakespeare s The Tragedy of Hamlet has traditionally been affixed with the label of villain, coupled with a presumption of malice. This prejudice has plagued the role, relegating it to shallow melodrama throughout the majority of the play s 440 odd-year history. Although it has now become more commonplace to see him portrayed as a capable, intelligent, even initially likable king, this has only been the case for the past 50 years or so, and even so the label of villain and the assumption of malice persist and prevail even in contemporary practice. While the author is reluctant to insist on the benevolence of the King as imperative, they do contend that Claudius should not be portrayed as a villain. Doing so undermines the primary conflict - that of Hamlet vs. Claudius - cripples the possibilities for exploration of the King as a role, hinders the potential for Hamlet s journey, and absolves the viewer of active engagement by playing directly into expectations. Within this thesis, consideration of historical analysis and editorial tradition are utilized in order to demonstrate a progressively encompassing disregard that has led to the role s neglect. An account of the 2006 University of Central Florida Conservatory Theatre production is used to validate the necessity of avoiding a villainous portrayal of the King. A brief description of the author s ideal Claudius explores the realm of possibility opened by such non-villainous portrayal, and potential for the role s complexity is examined through a thorough voice/text analysis and brief discussion of Jaques Lecoq s movement equilibrium theory via appendices.<br>M.F.A.<br>Department of Theatre<br>Arts and Humanities<br>Theatre MFA

Spens, Christiana. "Playing the villain : understanding the punishment and portrayal of terrorists." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/12175.

Full text
Abstract:
Playing the Villain argues that the portrayal and punishment of terrorists in the Western media perpetuates colonialist attitudes, due to the visual connections between these modern images and past or fictional representations of iconic, punished villains. A theory of scapegoating related to intervisuality supports this argument, by explaining that as a ritual dependent on and developed by cultural history and mythology, scapegoating requires engagement with recognisable visual motifs that repeat and perpetuate Western, colonialist attitudes. Underlying, repeated narrative patterns ensure that the scapegoating ritual functions in a way that is cathartic and builds national unity following social crisis. This need for catharsis requires that there be a scapegoated villain whose demise may be celebrated, and that the villain is objectified and fetishised through visual representation and spectacle.

Last, Stephanie Jane. "Reading the Villain: The Psychology of Character in the Victorian Novel." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2022. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/29627.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the complex and unsettling villain that emerges from the Victorian novel. Moving away from simplified, black and white conceptions of the ‘bad character’, the novel offers a nuanced, vivid, uncertain picture of villainy. Recent contributions to character studies usefully acknowledge that characters can be both human-like entities and integral cogs in the formal structures of narratives, yet the specific import of the villain character remains an intractable problem. This thesis offers a new intervention into the character debate by focusing on the intricacies the ‘villain effect’ – that is, what one character type, the villain, does to readers and what plot requires of it. It scrutinises the affective impact of the villain, alongside its imperative contributions to narrative configuration and explication, in the works of Charles Dickens, Charlotte and Emily Brontë, Anthony Trollope, Wilkie Collins, and Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Given its tendency to spark confused and conflicted feelings rather than straightforwardly negative ones, the villain offers a unique way to address the psychology of reading. The experience of reading the villain is bound up in a specific type of fervid attachment entrenched in both negative and positive affect. The conundrum this thesis investigates, therefore, is why the villain produces dynamic psychological responses in readers, involving an overflow of feeling and paradoxical reactions which are difficult to reconcile. I draw primarily on psychoanalytic methodologies, which are attuned to fixations and ambivalences, to work through these knotty, heightened responses. Among others, Sigmund Freud’s theory of the uncanny and Julia Kristeva’s notion of abjection help to explicate the villain’s uniquely uncomfortable hold on readers. Silvan Tomkins’s theory of primary affect offers another psychological angle, illuminating the more instinctive dimensions of reader response.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing dramatically worldwide. Type 2 diabetes is a major health and socio-economic burden. Genetic predisposition and the obesity epidemic, due to sedentary life style and high caloric food intake, are associated with development of type 2 diabetes. Circulating free fatty acids (FFAs), in particular saturated FFAs, are linked with insulin resistance and β cell dysfunction. Following this background we performed RNA sequencing of human pancreatic islets treated with the saturated FFA palmitate to acquire a global image of the islet response to this insult. We identified several stress pathways induced by palmitate with a major induction of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response. The ER stress response, in particular the PKR-like ER kinase (PERK) branch, has been shown to be induced by saturated FFA. It leads to increased β cell apoptosis both in fluorescence activated cell sorter (FACS) purified rat β cells and human islets. We further clarified the role of this pathway by studying the involvement of the constitutive repressor of eIF2α phosphorylation (CReP) in a monogenic form of diabetes. CReP is a repressor of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α (eIF2α) phosphorylation. A direct target of PERK, eIF2α is involved in translational attenuation and induction of apoptosis. We have shown that CReP loss-of-function leads to a new syndrome of young onset diabetes, intellectual disability and microcephaly. The identified R658C mutation abrogated CReP activity leading to increased eIF2α phosphorylation and β cell apoptosis. To further demonstrate the importance of eIF2α dysregulation in β cell demise, we used guanabenz, a chemical inhibitor of growth arrest DNA damage inducible 34 (GADD34). GADD34 is an ER stress-induced repressor of eIF2α phosphorylation. Guanabenz potentiated FFA-mediated ER stress and apoptosis in clonal and primary rat β cells and in human islets through the activation of CCAAT/enhancer binding protein homologous protein (CHOP), downstream of eIF2α. Guanabenz administration in mice impaired glucose tolerance and led to β cell dysfunction. In ex vivo experiments guanabenz also induced β cell dysfunction in mouse and rat islets. In conclusion our data demonstrate that the dysregulation of signaling in the PERK/eIF2α pathway is crucial for β cell demise. Together with previously reported monogenic diabetes caused by loss-of-function mutations in PERK in man and the eIF2αS51A mutation in mice, our findings suggest that a narrow regulation of PERK/eIF2α signaling is central for proper β cell function and survival.<br>Doctorat en Sciences biomédicales et pharmaceutiques (Médecine)<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

This creative practice-led research examines how Vladimir Propp’s formalist structural analysis of Russian fairy tales may be applied to the writing of revisionist cinematic adaptations where the traditional literary villain is transformed into an anti-hero. This was achieved by mapping Propp’s 31 narrative elements to Syd Field’s three-act structural paradigm which resulted in the formulation of a new screenwriting schema that may be used as an alternative to the more established The Hero’s Journey model.

Mohamad, Lina. "The burden of valour : the hero and the terrorist-villain in post-9/11 popular fiction." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/17598.

Full text
Abstract:
My research is a literary study which primarily examines previously unstudied best-selling action-thriller fiction primary material from the US, Britain and Russia (published in the decade following the 11 September 2001 attacks) in the contexts of hegemonic masculinity and Self and Other stereotyping. I analyse thirteen works by the following popular fiction authors: Vince Flynn, Daniel Silva, Nelson DeMille, Frederick Forsyth and Danil Koretskiy. Drawing on masculinity studies and archetypal psychology, I formulate the model of the archetypal hero – a character type which the above authors‘ works capitalise on. I trace the employment of this model in these primary works within the framework of constructing a positive and heroic image of the Self, of which the action-thriller hero is the chief representative. The archetypal hero‘s principal traits include courage, honour, individualism and just violence among others. Heroes such as Mitch Rapp, Gabriel Allon, John Corey, Mike Martin, Max Kardanov and Alexei Mal‘tsev embody this archetypal model and confirm it as positive and dominant in their respective narratives. The authors also utilise a variety of framing strategies to enhance their heroes‘ authoritativeness and characterisation. Among these strategies, the use of historical facts and figures to anchor the narrative, enemy acknowledgement of the hero‘s qualities and female characters‘ fulfilment of traditional gender roles are the most prominent. First-person narration also plays a role in enhancing authenticity, such as in DeMille‘s novels. While the heroes and the side they represent are characterised as inherently positive and superior, their terrorist antagonists fulfil the role of the essentialised and diametrically opposite Other. I demonstrate through further analysis how these characters are positioned as archetypal terrorists, embodying traits which are antithetical to the hero‘s: backwardness; hatred of modernity and ‗civilisation‘; religion (Islam) as their source of hatred; desire for arbitrary revenge and unjustified violence; hypocrisy and disloyalty. Having analysed the main archetypal heroes and villains in the primary action-thriller works, I proceed to examine two mainstream literary authors: American John Updike and Algerian Francophone Yasmina Khadra. I study those of their novels which foreground terrorist characters instead of archetypal heroes, thus analysing one novel by Updike (Terrorist) and two by Khadra (Les Sirènes de Bagdad and L’Attentat). I find that, despite an increased focus on the character of the budding teenage suicide bomber from New Jersey, Updike‘s characterisation follows a pattern similar to the archetypal terrorist in the action-thriller sources. On the other hand, Khadra achieves a more balanced and complex portrayal, presenting his terrorists as human beings motivated by their various personal, social and political grievances rather than blind religious hatred. In sum, only Khadra‘s narratives transcend stereotypical views of terrorism, while the other post-9/11 primary works (including Updike) focus on perpetuating binary oppositions of the Self and Other, masculinity and emasculation. My original contribution to knowledge is the identification, definition and comparative textual analysis of archetypal hero and terrorist characters in post-9/11 action-thriller and mainstream fiction in three languages (English, Russian and French) within a framework combining several elements: aspects of the system of representation of the terrorist Other, masculinity studies and archetypal psychology as well as the context of political and media post-9/11 views of Arabs and/or Muslims in the US, Britain and Russia.

Biggs, Michael. "THE DARK SIDE OF THE TUNE: A STUDY OF VILLAINS." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2008. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3648.

Abstract:
On championing the villain, there is a naïve quality that must be maintained even though the actor has rehearsed his tragic ending several times. There is a subtle difference between to charm and to seduce. The need for fame, glory, power, money, or other objects of affection drives antagonists so blindly that they ve no hope of regaining a consciousness about their actions. If and when they do become aware, they infrequently feel remorse. I captured the essence of the villain by exposing these lightless characters to the sun. On Monday, April 9th and Tuesday, April 17th, 2007, on the Gillespie stage in Daytona Beach, Florida, I performed a thirty-minute, one-act cabaret entitled The Dark Side of the Tune. By selecting pieces from the musical theatre genre to define and demonstrate the qualities of the stock character, the villain, I created a one-man show; a musical play, including an inciting incident, rising conflict, climax, and dénouement, with only a few moments of my own dialogue to help handle the unique transitions for my own particular story. By analyzing the arc of major historical villains and comparing them to some of the current dark characters, I will discuss the progression of the villain s role within a production and the change from the clearly defined villain to modern misfits who are frequently far less scheming or obvious. My research includes analysis of the dark references within each piece s originating production, and how it has been integrated into the script for The Dark Side of the Tune and a breakdown of my cabaret s script (Appendix A). I explore actors tools, specifically voice, movement, and characterization, and their use in creating villainous characters. I also discuss similarities in story progression for the deviant s beginning, middle, and final positions within the plot structure of a production.<br>M.F.A.<br>Department of Theatre<br>Arts and Humanities<br>Theatre MFA

Helmfors, Linda. "Understanding the dual nature of lysozyme: part villain – part hero : A Drosophila melanogaster model of lysozyme amyloidosis."

Full text
Abstract:
Amyloid proteins are a distinct class of proteins that can misfold into β-sheet rich structures that later mature to form the characteristic species known as amyloid fibrils, and accumulate in tissues in the human body. The misfolding event is often caused by mutations (or outer factors such as changes in pH) that destabilize the native protein structure. The mature amyloid fibrils were initially believed to be associated with diseases connected to protein misfolding such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease, transthyretin amyloidosis and lysozyme amyloidosis. However, now it is known that many different factors are involved in these diseases such as failure in protein clearance, lysosomal dysfunction and formation of intermediate misfolded protein species, which possess cytotoxic properties, preceding the formation of mature fibrils. In this thesis the amyloidogenic protein lysozyme has been examined in vivo by using Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) as a model organism. The effects of over-expressing human lysozyme and amyloidogenic variants in Drosophila have been investigated both in the absence and presence of the serum amyloid P component (SAP), a protein known to interact with amyloid species. In addition, the role of lysozyme in AD has been investigated by  co-expressing human lysozyme and amyloid β in Drosophila. The lysozyme protein is an enzyme naturally found in bodily fluids such as tears, breast milk and saliva. It is engaged in the body’s defense and acts by hydrolyzing the cell wall of invading bacteria. Certain disease-associated point mutations in the gene encoding lysozyme destabilize the protein and cause it to misfold which results in systemic amyloidosis. To investigate the in vivo misfolding behavior of lysozyme we developed and established a Drosophila model of lysozyme amyloidosis. SAP is commonly found attached to amyloid deposits in the body; however, the role of SAP in amyloid diseases is unknown. To investigate the effect of SAP in lysozyme misfolding, these two proteins were co-expressed in Drosophila. The amyloid β peptide is involved in AD, building up the plaques found in AD patient brains. These plaques trigger neuroinflammation and since lysozyme is upregulated during various inflammation conditions, a possible role of lysozyme in AD was investigated by overexpressing lysozyme in a Drosophila model of AD. Interaction between lysozyme and the amyloid β protein was also studied by biophysical measurements. During my work with this thesis, the dual nature of lysozyme emerged; on the one hand a villain, twisted by mutations, causing the lysozyme amyloidosis disease. On the other hand a hero, delaying the toxicity and maybe the neurological damage caused by the amyloid β peptide.

Abstract:
Grundat i undersökningen har en kompletterande gestaltning i form av en film skapats där vi har använt oss av karaktärsrollerna som vi analyserat.<br>Meetings between people can be exciting and make you discover something new, also in movies. Meetings between the characters drives the plot forward, and create exciting interaction between the characters. We have chosen to focus on meetings between the hero and the villain, two strong and important character roles in the film. The character roles are taken from Vogler, The Writer's Journey (1997). To get a broader picture of how roles may appear in film, we have chosen to analyze two different films in different genres, the films we have chosen are Die Hard (1988) and Alien (1979). We have used the analytical model presented in From Antz to Titanic - A student's guide to film analysis (2000) and formed the model to our fitting. One of the parts of the analysis focuses on the technical aspects of the scenes that can help move the story forward. Based on our survey of character roles and meetings between them, we have created a movie to portray this.

Abstract:
This qualitative thesis examines levels of pessimism as they relate to modern and postmodern horror cinema. Beyond assumed differences in levels of pessimism between the two genres, the study also examines implicit and explicit moralization of these categories. Specifically, the study questions if postmodern horror cinema's characteristic increase in pessimism is simply a change in the genre's convention, yet a change that is irrespective of either genre's capabilities to moralize. First, the study singularly examines the conventions of each genre as it relates to levels of pessimism. Second, the study discusses works that bridge the two genres. And third, the study speculates on the future of pessimism in postmodern horror cinema, specifically examining the genre's increased reliance on a combination of narrative and documentary techniques. In addition, this study uses content analysis as its methodological framework, whereby representative works of horror cinema (the data) are subjected to in-depth personal reading and textual analysis given the levels of pessimism between the two genres (the coding) via text immersion. Nonetheless, this study should be viewed more as a guided and informed exploration of certain characteristics regarding the genres and less of a defense since the data will not be quantified.

Abstract:
The debate regarding the advantages and disadvantages of using DDT for IRS has divided the scientific community. The health benefits of reducing malaria spreading are weighed against the potential health and environmental consequences of the chemical, and opinions also differ regarding the cost-effectiveness of the use of DDT. Global recommendations regarding use of DDT for IRS have been issued by the WHO, and the receipt of these on the local level is determined by the intended beneficiaries’ perception of legitimacy of the organisation. The WHO recommendations on DDT as well as interviews conducted with residents of a South African village and representatives for two South African NGOs have been reviewed using qualitative content analysis. This method was used to highlight different perceptions of and views on DDT use, as well as for examining the potential effect that the interviewees’ perception of international institutions’ legitimacy has on their views on DDT. This study shows that the controversy regarding DDT is not as prominent on the local level as on the global level, and that the perceptions of IRS with DDT differ between the WHO, the NGOs and the residents of the village. Further, this study shows that assessing legitimacy is dependent on a definition of “the people” in question, and that the accountability of authoritative actors on different levels needs to be evaluated further.

Abstract:
In Günter Grass's Danzig Trilogy and novella, Im Krebsgang, an antagonistic female type makes a repeated appearance. She appears in the guise of Susi Kater and Luzie Rennwand in Die Blechtrommel, and as Tulla Pokriefke in the other works, Katz und Maus, Hundejahre, and Im Krebsgang. This antagonistic female type is not like other women in these works. A review of Le Deuxième Sexe by feminist Simone de Beauvoir reveals several crucial components contributing to woman's position in society. Most essentially, a woman's natural attributes and (dis)abilities and the conventions of society have enforced her historical submission to man. This thesis analyzes how the antagonistic female type, or villain, compares and contrasts with other female figures in these works by Grass, according to a paradigm derived from Beauvoir's description of woman. From this analysis, a better understanding of the female villain's nature emerges. Indeed, such a comparison demonstrates that certain female figures in the works of Grass transcend their historically oppressed or subdued status by refusing to submit to those natural handicaps and societal restrictions identified by Beauvoir, and thus become a threat to man's status or security as an antagonistic female type, or villain. However, the villain figure is not always inherently evil, but possesses the capacity to change. The villain and victim can reconcile their differences and may even form a friendly relationship. This evolving villain-victim duality becomes most clear in Grass's work, Im Krebsgang, and suggests the possibility of assuaging contemporary conflicts as educators sympathize with the experiences of both extremist groups and victimized parties and help them come to terms with their differences.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior<br>This work aims to understand the consolidation of the villain as a stereotypical character, representative of questions related to conception of social, cultural and historical values, according to a collective imagination. For tihs, it seeks to support the comparative analysis of two works in which we can see the configuration of this character one, linked to a theater type, very popular, the melodrama, and other linked to Brazilian dramaturgy in the nineteenth century. This approach favors the observation of relevant aspects about the development of theater in Brazil, at a time when there was an accentuated movement towards the establishment of a national culture. In this context, there was a conflict between the aim of producing works of literary quality, according to foreign standards (mostly European) and scenic exercise. However, in this period, there was a predominance of representations of popular forms, like the melodrama, acclaimed by general public. Its success stimulated influence of its features in writing of the national works, encouraged the exploration of aspects like the utilization of villains characters and the relationship between written text and elements of the scenic spectacle, approaching theatre and literature with the composition of spectacular texts, based on the use of rubrics. Therefore, in this study, we present a show that this happened in practice and suggest its income in the characterization of the Brazilian literature.<br>Este trabalho almeja compreender a consolidação do vilão como uma personagem estereotipada, representante de questões relacionadas à concepção de valores sociais, culturais e históricos, de acordo com um imaginário coletivo.

Abstract:
Oliver Twist is a novel loved by many, read by more. It is a classic novel by Charles Dickens, portraying the life and hardships of a young boy named Oliver Twist, who was born in a work house. Oliver is bright and righteous, the exact opposite of his brother Edward “Monks” Leeford. This essay will follow Oliver and Monks and analyse their characters in the light of the literary hero and the literary villain and in doing so see how Dickens use the characters as literary tools to convey his view of a dark, uncaring Victorian society as well as his hopes for a brighter future. Their strong characteristics make way for a fascinating story, a story that do not only tell us about Oliver’s bravery and Monks’ egoism, but one that do also prove that they are characters created by Dickens to show both the Victorian society that he lived in as well as the society that it could become.

Abstract:
<p>The literature on J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter is prolific. People have written on various topics dealing with issues such as translation, etymology and diverse areas concerning the language. In this essay, I examine whether linguistic features such as reporting verbs, adverbs of manner and adjectives contribute to the depiction of heroic and villainous characters. Before conducting this research, my assumptions were that there would be a great difference in the value of the words depending on the character they were associated with. I wanted to see if the heroic characters used verbs and adverbs with positive connotations, and the villainous characters verbs and adverbs with negative connotations. I also wanted to know if the adjectives describing the characters could, in themselves, clearly indicate whether a character was a hero or a villain.</p><p>The results of my research suggested that the choice of particular verbs and adverbs contributed only indirectly to the depiction of the characters. Without context, it was not possible to know if the character was a hero or a villain simply by identifying the verbs and adverbs used to describe their speech. By contrast, the choice of particular adjectives did appear to indicate more clearly whether a character was hero or villain. Finally, the results of my research indicated that context, rather than the use of particular linguistic features was often the most important factor in contributing to the portrayal of characters in the novel.</p>

Greimas and in Brazil by Diana Luz Pessoa de Barros and José Luiz Fiorin. The purposes are to examine the narrative and discursive strategies applied as persuasion mechanisms in a political discourse; among these strategies, show the resources used in the creation of the figure of the hero; check the intertextual and interdiscursive relations present in the text, which builds the ideological and socio-historical context of the discourses; to examine the role of the setting of the hero in a political discourse; and checking how Collor set up himself as a hero and how the media supported to create the hero picture taken by the political, until to the achievement of the presidency of the country, and the villain picture when he begun to be investigated by the crimes of corruption. The material analyzed consists of Fernando Collor discourse as president in 1990 and as a senator in 2007, beside of this and two magazine where the politician was masthead, and some records of the main printed communication press of the time. With the linguisticdiscursive analysis, it was possible to draw the line of the hero powerful as opposed to the hero suffered , used as persuasion techniques in political discourse.<br>Este trabalho tem como tema a construção do herói e do vilão no discurso político, mais especialmente no discurso de Fernando Collor de Mello, com base, principalmente, na teoria semiótica de linha francesa e a metodologia desenvolvidas por Algirdas J. Full text
Abstract:
From Aesop, the Roman actor, to Heath Ledger, the Hollywood star, numerous sources report instances of actors “possessed” by the evil part they are playing. Groundless myth, wild speculation on the part of spectators in search of thrills, or even marketing strategy? Perhaps, but that is not what matters most: whether real or fantasized, the number and the consistency of these stories throughout history bear evidence of their importance. Our imagination as a spectator seems to feed on these fantasized slips, on these stories of actors who, as the saying goes, lost themselves in acting and sometimes even died from it. After paying brief attention to some of these stories and to what they reveal about our relationship to the stage, a reversal of perspective is proposed : the risk of confusion between the actor and the character he is playing is no longer investigated through the lens of one’s perception of the actor but through paying close attention to the personal experiences of the actors themselves – we try to evade fantasies by attempting to understand what is really occurring in the actors’ mind when playing an evil character- To this end, we analyze the actor’s work in its most concrete and seemingly most innocuous aspects, from making up to the beating heart, from knee pain to flashes of pleasure, from the rituals before going on stage to laughter and tears shed once the performance is over, from tension to complicity with the partnering actors. We slip into the everyday life of the Théâtre du Soleil company by means of a wide field study which combines observation of rehearsals and actors’ statements of their own experience

Abstract:
This study addressed the question: “Does Western media framing of different actors in ethnic conflict influence the likelihood of intervention being advocated in the media?” In order to answer this question, this study used a content analysis of USA, UK and Australian print media, and explored the media framing of conflicts in Rwanda, Kosovo, and East Timor. The study examined newspaper articles prior to intervention and, using Piers Robinson’s media framing model (2000), measured the quantity of “empathetic” and “distancing” coverage in relation to suggestions for intervention. The results of this study show that simplified representations of these complex conflicts often lead to a dangerous polarisation in Western media. Ethnic conflicts are discussed either within a “barbaric” frame, where readers are presented with well-defined heroes, victims and villains and are encouraged to support intervention; or with a “native” narrative, where the situation is reported as a distant problem between “squabbling tribes”, and the media consumer is encouraged to support non-intervention.

My thesis explores an idea about a spatial transformation within a volume. This transformation occurs internally and externally with the introduction of light. The volumes become objects that can be studied, analyzed and trans- formed again. This constant transformation is guided by certain proportional relationships that are formed within the formal construction of the cubic volume. Sections and models are generated to study aspects of the cube that may realize an architecture of place. A villa is used in this mode of study as a basic unit of human habitation. The hierarchical relationships within the parts of the villa mirror that within the formal construction of the object and the interactions that are necessary between the parts.<br>Master of Architecture

The objective is to demonstrate, through the analysis of the verbal-visual discourse of the performances of crossplayers when interpreting male characters, that the figures of the hero and the villain in works of female authors, have power and show that for crossplayers to assume the representation of such figures, the conditio sine qua non is the silencing of the feminine. The corpus of analysis consists of two performances presented by Brazilian crossplayers: the first concerns a clipping from the manga Clover authored by the CLAMP group (composed entirely of women) focusing on the hero Kazuhiko Fay Ryu, and the second an excerpt from the manga Inuyasha, authored by Rumiko Takahashi, aiming at the villain, Sesshoumaru. The work is divided into four chapters. The first discusses concepts of Japanese pop culture, focusing on the manga (comic books). The second presents the world of cosplay practice (activity that involves representing characters derived from popular media, including the manga) and crossplay (segment in which cosplay practitioners interpret characters of the opposite sex). The third is based on the theoretical framework, in which I elaborate on a literature review of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Visual Grammar, gender studies, fundamentals of Takarazuka Theater (theater company composed entirely of women) and studies on performance. The fourth chapter includes: a) the transformation of crossplayers described from supplementary materials available in a video and tutorials that illustrate the preceding steps of stage performance; b) analysis methodology, based on the model of the pentad of Burke (1973), composed of agent, act, scene, agency and proposal, to which selected categories among the other theoretical axes are added; c) the analysis of the two performances, available in DVD. In order to broaden the informative horizon tangent to the practice of performances resulting from intertextual movements with manga I include an attachment with the testimony of Brazilian crossplayers and an appendix with an account of my own experience in cos/crossplay. Along with the test results, this material is also considered in the search for an answer to the question that imposes itself from the title of the work: "Silence or subversion? The representation of the social role of women in the performative discourse of manga crossplayers<br>Esta tese é construída a partir da hipótese de que o apagamento do corpo feminino para interpretar o masculino é um meio de adquirir voz e poder.

My project was a kindergarten in an area with villas from 1920's with beautiful old gardens and fragments from classism and charataristisc colours and elements.  Kindergarten Green House is well adapted both for its content and surroundings in scale and charactar. Its green colour, the steep roof and the rounded windows are examples of how the new building fits its area.  The interiors is characterized by simlicity, beautiful materialial as birch and limestone and rooms in a scale and logic that is adapted and understandable for children. The shared spaces as studios and workshop in located in the center surrounded by the three departents. The garden around Green House is an important complement for the interior rooms, the garden have space for pedagogic learning about nature, playing and have food outside in all kind of the swedish weather.

Abstract:
Para comprender el marco local es fundamental tener en cuenta las relaciones entre el concejo y la Monarquía y los efectos que los designios de ésta pudieron tener sobre aquél.<br>The work here presented search, therefore, since there was used, socially secondhand the municipal institution of a medium villa, both from the internal point of view and from the project to do it we have chosen the years that ran as hinge between the XVIth and XVIIth century and a concrete territory the villa of Dovecots of the field in Huete's (Cuenca) .El case of Dovecots fits well in the system that allows us to raise the suppositions on the meaning centralizadora of the Monarchy in these years. Grogan, Mary Christopher. "VICARIOUS VILLAINY: A CRITICAL LITERARY ANALYSIS OF SYMPATHETIC VILLAINY IN AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATRE." UKnowledge, 2014. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/theatre_etds/1.

Full text
Abstract:
A disproportionate amount of research into musical theatre focuses on the positive and accessible nature of the books and librettos. Very little, if any, research into musical theatre explores its darker side, specifically the considerable amount of villainy (i.e., traditionally immoral and/or criminal behavior) practiced by some of its protagonists. Moreover, it is important to note that several of the most popular musicals contain villainous characters, and that many of these characters are highly popular and even sympathetic (i.e., understandable, pitiable, and deserving of compassion) to audiences. Therefore, this thesis explores sympathetic villainous personalities in popular American musicals, focusing on the defining characteristics of the sympathetic villainy presented within specific musical works. Specifically, this thesis examines a variety of American musical theatre pieces, chronologically, from Show Boat (1927) to Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz (2003) which have strong sympathetic villainous characters. This thesis primarily addresses musical theatre villainy primarily from a critical literary analysis standpoint.

Abstract:
The aim of this Ph.D research is to provide a representative framework of the forms and role of extraurban farms and villas in Northern Italy, on the basis of accidental findings. The research project included the systematic census of the sites starting from the publishing documentation. The data have been entered into a relational database, adapted and constantly optimized by taking into account the different features of the data needing to manage. At the same time a GIS has been developed: it allow to compare results on a geographical basis as well. Finally, 203 sites have been selected and catalogued, they are divided by modern regions Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, and they can be ascribed to the chronological period between second century B.C.E. and fifth century C.E. The first part of the thesis aims to provide a consistent framework of the argument and to present the project, clarifying the criteria used, the limits and the innovative aspects. The collected documents was then processed through the computer tool (i.e. relational database), forming the basis for further analyses. First of all, typological features have been investigated: the analysis of the sites allowed to formulate some reconstructive hypotheses concerning the general organization of the buildings and the arrangement of the different areas or functional spaces within them. For this purpose, the data have been supported by precise comparisons with better known cases. Once the objective features of the sites were analyzed and identified by their forms and models, it has been proceeded into a critical analysis of their functional role, which helped to identify the functional Types, distinguished on the basis of clear evaluation criteria. The conclusion is that the territory must have been occupied by a widespread hierarchical system of isolated complexes, generally developed since the Augustan age and characterized by a long continuity of frequentation, which lasted until the V-VI century CE, with renovations, plan variations and internal divisions. The research will then provide a complete synthesis of the published data about isolated and extra-urban sites in Northern Italy, constituting a solid basis for future studies on the topic.<br>La ricerca di dottorato nasce con l’obiettivo principale di fornire un quadro d’insieme delle attestazioni relative a fattorie e ville di epoca romana indagate archeologicamente in Italia settentrionale.

Abstract:
My thesis compromises a variety of short stories which are modern re-writes of dark fairy tales. Fairy Tales often explore the dark side of human nature and in these stories I focus on the voices of female villains and the strange psychology which drives them. I find Fairy Tales absorbing because they reveal the vulnerabilities, dreams and fears of the human consciousness. My stories contain some satirical expositions of human nature and society. My influences are the anthology of short stories, “My mother She Killed Me and My Father He Ate Me”, The Grimm Fairy Tales (original) and The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault as well as the writing of Horacio Moya, Angela Carter and Alissa Nutting for their dark satire and mockery of social eccentricities. Kate Bernheimer’s “Form is Fairy Tale and Fairy Tale is Form” is very influential in terms of the style it recommends in writing such as: “every day magic”, “flatness” (a form of narration), abstraction and intuitive logic.
