Full textThis thesis explores the inputs and the impact of digital footprints on the understanding of the spatial dimensions of urban tourist practices. Digital footprints are an emerging field of investigation that promises a better understanding of service stakeholders’ expectations (businesses, institutions, academic). From heat maps to dashboards, data is collected, processed, aggregated, smoothed, and synthetized into visualizations that could reveal a new tourist space-time. Applying frameworks from tourism geography and critical data studies, we suggest a critical approach to analyze the way these data are used. A review of the existing literature confirms an uptrend in digital footprints usage / monitoring, identifies what is at stake regarding the observation of tourist cities and points out critical limits. Two complementary approaches are then presented to measure the concrete value of this data regarding the space-time of urban tourist practices. In Biarritz (France), the analysis of a given social media dataset highlights the need for a contextualized analysis of footprints. In La Rochelle (France), a GPS dataset complemented with a series of interviews reveal the potential of elicitation methods to better understand digital footprints and narrate the practice of the tourist city. Eventually, these two approaches confirm our initial hypothesis i.e. digital footprints tend to enrich, under specific conditions, the understanding of tourism practices. The outcomes obtained allow us to advocate the relevance of contextualized and qualitative research on digital footprints in geography

Full textAlong with the geometrization of urban space producing a geometric center, a hierarchical vision of space occupation has been developed. The top of this hierarchy has coincided for a long time with this geometrical centrality which becomes the essential element of city's identification, known by the term of downtown or city center. It is essential to note that downtowns have significantly evolved. Like other cities all over the world, the city of Bejaia doesn't escape this phenomenal disruption of these traditional centers, followed by emergence of new centralities. In the framework of a multidisciplinary approach, our study aims to discover different levels of breaks and degree of both conformance and difference between planning policy and socio-economic potentials of Bejaia, concerning its central spaces. Essentially, it searches to identify its touristic predispositions and develop their consistence and coherence in the light of opening up to the Mediterranean area

Full textThis research has also a contribution to the qualitative study in the domain of tourism and advertising. In order to get an exhaustive investigation in the process of interpreting advertising language, analyzing the content qualitatively with the integration of a linguistic approach is suggested. The qualitative study reinforces the tendency in tourism advertising since it necessitates careful studies about the topics of tourism and advertising. The objective of this research is not to make a comparison between different figurative devices employed in tourism advertising in the case of Marrakech, but rather to examine the connection between the explored rhetorical figures and discover how they contribute to forming the image of Marakech as one of the best destination the potential tourist may choose and how they make him understand the destination through advertising. These connections go around the context of metaphorical patterns and the wants of potential tourists. Analyzing the content underlines the features of the language used in tourism advertising. These features are extracted from the tendencies in tourism and changes that happen according to the wants and requirements of tourists throughout. Only a subjective interpretation is possible in the case of language in this research area. The unavoidable part of this kind of research is the researcher’s qualified opinion. The researcher generally guides the entire process; he is part of the study because the interpretations of the work are made according to the abilities and the beliefs of the researcher. However, this does not mean that the ideas and points expressed in this work are purely subjective. They rely on complete research that may be confirmed by other researchers in order to be considered as a reflection of general tendencies and wider facts about the practice of language in tourism advertising

Full textTourism Destination Competitiveness is a new concept in Vietnam and Laos, no study on this subject carried out in the context of heritage cities (in Vietnam and Laos). This study mainly uses the Tourism Destination Competitiveness (CTD) model of Ritchie and Crouch (2003) to analyze the competitiveness of three heritage cities in Southeast Asia: Hue (Vietnam), Hoi An (Vietnam), and Luang Prabang (Laos). To this end, using 7 criteria and 51 sub-criteria, this research applies the Fuzzy Number and the model in Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) approach allows to classify these three destinations. This empirical study was based on a two-step procedure. The first step consisted of applying the Fuzzy Number to analyze the CTD of three mentioned destinations. At the second step, the TOPSIS process was applied to the ranking analysis. The TOPSIS provided not only the ranking of the 3 destinations according to 7 criteria, but also the final general classification among the sub-criteria. Finally, managerial implications for three studied cities to improve their tourism competitiveness were discussed. The results showed that the Fuzzy Number in TOPSIS can be implemented as an effective approach for the CTD evaluation.Key words: Tourism Destination Competitiveness, Fuzzy Number, Fuzzy Number in TOPSIS, Crouch and Ritchie model
