Full textThe history of cinema and the history of the city are narratives that work together for over a century. Urban areas have been the scene of several productions in the first decades of cinema experiments. Include those that have been made to Auguste and Louis Lumière at the end of the nineteenth century or where the city of Amsterdam appears, a few years later, in a poetic way, the images of Regen (1929), Joris Ivens . Today décor continues to be the space traversed by the cameras when they will tell the stories dramatized in movies. However, film studies are still limited to the analysis of the city as a backdrop. Assuming that space is a major element in understanding the staging of a film, one might say that there is a kind of aesthetic experience of building images the city on film? How aesthetic experiences they have created and disclosed in the urban spaces of the cinema? And what aesthetic pleasures they allow these spaces from an experience of their buildings on the fictional film productions? What it you experience the drift approaches or departs you it cinematic images?

Full textThe main objective of this is to reflect upon the social universe of a city, using the cinematographic reception as the supporting point. Thus, the empirical perspective of the thesis lies on the experience the city of Londrina has had with the cinema, with special emphasis which directs this work tries to vedate the cinema as the privileged place in which one can understand a city. The relationship cinema city is understood within a dimension of reciprocity; that is, the city is the generator "per excellence" of topics and history for the cinema allows itself to perceive, through the images and generates, the contours of a fiction which cuts through the daily activities of a city. The division proposed in this thesis tries to answer this question. Part I deals with methodological questions. As the methodology is proposed, questions related to the city and the cinema are discussed within a theoretical framework. Part ii aims at an empirical description of the city of Londrina, keeping in mind the main objective of this work. In an attempt to approximate the two preceding parts the unique experience of Londrina with the cinema is discussed in part iii, the last part of the thesis

Full textThis thesis focuses on the figure of marginality that has appeared in Chinese independent cinema. In particular, it examines independent cinema in a post-socialist Chinese context. This study allowed the exploration of the social condition of marginalized people, as well as their representation in independent cinema. In order to identify the characteristics of the representation of the marginalized in Chinese cinema, thematic and aesthetic approaches were used. Urban space, the suburbs and the countryside have been favored by some independent filmmakers. Three movements were accordingly examined: the cinema of the Urban Generation, the cinema of the New Xungen movement and the New Documentary movement. The three films associated with them are East Palace, West Palace (Zhang Yuan, 1996), Still Life (Jia Zhangke, 2006) and The Three Sisters of Yunnan (Wang Bing, 2012). These films are representative of the presence of marginalized people in Chinese society.

The act of inhabiting becomes a point of convergence between social activism and artistic ambition in these films. The notion of territory, which adds a political dimension to the conception of space, is key to this analysis of recent Brazilian cinema, which seeks to identify trends in the works examined without ignoring the filmmakers’ individual styles

Full textThis thesis aims to demonstrate that the term mosaic films adequately characterises the category of multi-protagonist films whose plots unfold in different locations and which gained popularity in the 1990s and 2000s. This expression represents a certain cinematographic narrative (simultaneity of multiple plots, spatial dispersion, thematic convergence, coincidences), the underlying sociological influences (globalisation / digitisation) and the contradictions of a world between homogeneity and heterogeneity (the unity of the mosaic versus the discontinuity of the tesserae, the narrative unity of the film versus the discontinuity of the plots, the homogeneity of the globalised culture versus the heterogeneity of local cultures). In the context of the so-called "Tarantino effect", this work explores the proliferation of narrative innovations that has manifested itself in many films during the 1990s and, more specifically, the production of films with multiple plots (multi-protagonist films or multiple protagonist films). The category of mosaic films is separated into urban mosaic films, whose actions extend into a large heterogeneous and often multicultural city; and global mosa. Ic films, where the actions are distributed throughout the planet. In addition, mosaic films are linked to the processes of globalisation and the digitisation of the planet and the thesis examines whether they reflect the spirit of an era without borders and its -apparent - economic and political freedom

Full textThis thesis discusses the representation of urban landscape in Greek films during the urban reconstruction period (1950-1974). Considering the filmography of popular cinema as a primary source of collective memory of the cityscape before and after its reconstruction, this research explores the film images of the Greek capital landscape, which was characterized by historical discontinuity, architectural rupture and collective amnesia. The thesis seeks to examine both the city’s influence on cinema and the cinema’s impact on the city, exploring how cinema created a cinematographic geography, projected urban models, reflected city imageries and formed utopian visions of historical continuity. The thesis explores various topics relating to the theme of the city, such as the practice of shots in location and the recording of urban spaces, house description before and after the reconstruction, the plots about house demolition, replacement or construction, and the emergence of new symbols in Athens geography. The thesis explores both hegemonic and alternative representations of the city. The nostalgic utopia often found in post war films rejecting reconstruction, the emergence of a modernity discourse, critical views on working class spaces, and the city as a monument or as a showcase of the tourist industry are also examined. For the presentation of a panoramic view of Athens cityscape a corpus of 110 films, representative of various trends in Greek post war cinematography, has been examined
