Abstract:

Abstract:
This study aims to determine if the phrasal verbs used in English in the TV series Bewitched have the same interpretation of meanings in the translation to Portuguese in the subtitles. The research follows the model of Vinay and Darbelnet (1989) with focus on part of their theories called “oblique translation”. The study is an exploratory research and the episodes of Bewitched series selected were from the first and the last season, aiming at comparing the original scripts with phrasal verbs with the translation in the subtitles to Portuguese. The software AntConc was used to locate phrasal verbs through scripts; the software Notepad++ was used to compare the English and Portuguese versions; and the Excel software enabled the researcher to account for the data found. The results are shown in accordance with Vinay and Darbelnet's theory since they emphasize the transmission of a message to whoever is watching through the possible linguistic means each language presents over literal translation.

Abstract:
Translation theories which bloomed in the 1950s and the 1960s have inspired numerous debates on multiple contexts of theory and praxis. With the increase of specialized journals and publishing houses of the past few decades, the professional literature has gone in so many directions –with supporters and opponents alike— that it is often hard to strike a balanced view of the contributions of these theories to current translation studies. In an attempt to fill this gap, this theoretical review article examines a corpus of scholarly publications which have taken place mainly between 2002 and 2018 about the translation theories proposed in the 1950s and 1960s. To such end, a body of works focusing on the seminal works of Vinay and Darbelnet (1958), Jakobson (1959), Nida (1964a), Catford (1965), and Nida and Taber (1969) are reviewed to infer their degree of applicability to current translation-based discussions and praxis. Findings suggest that the authors exerting the greatest influence on contemporary discussions of translation studies seem to be Vinay and Darbelnet, followed by Nida and Taber, and then by Jakobson and Catford. They also indicate that the degree to which the translation theories under question are obsolete (or not) is hard to determine with accuracy. It remains unclear whether the bulk of publications which these theoreticians inspire is the product of acceptance or rejection of the assumptions contained in their postulates.

Abstract:
This article aims to specify one method of descriptive analysis, which can be used in the epistemological framework of the Descriptive Translation Studies and the theory of the polysystem. The challenge is essentially to define the unit of analysis in relation to traditional translation methods (borrowing, tracing, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, adaptation), defined in 1958 by Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet. We aim to associate the comparative stylistics with polysystem theory on the descriptive studies of translation and to propose a method of qualitative and quantitative analysis on corpus of source and target texts. The method could be profitable especially for studies in the field of the history of translation (in the phase of “historical criticism” according to the taxonomy of the discipline formulated by A. Pym).

Abstract:
The new linguistic science lacunology has come into prominence recently. The lacunae studies embrace sociolinguistics, nonverbal semiotics and applied linguistics studies. The re-search of terms of lacunology (lacunicon) is devoted to empty places in the structure of the contrasting languages and the ways of zero verbalization in the written and oral discourse. The empty category of the category “lacunarity” has been studied by the Canadian transla-tors Jean Paul Vinay (1910-1999) and Jean Darbelnet (1904-1990), the Russian pioneers of lacu-nology Yuriy Sorokin (1936-2009) and Gulchera Bikova and their followers. The research has resulted in the cognitive mind mapping. It turned out that lacunarity has several vectors, e.g. lacunae of language (i), lacunae of speech (ii), lacunae of cognition (iii) to be further discussed in the article. The basic terms of lacunicon are described. These are a pause in syntagmatics, a linguistic gap in paradigmatics, a lacuna in both diachronic and synchronic regimes.

Abstract:
Translation shifts are among the disciplines that have always been in focus. Many scholars have discussed in this regard and have proposed some models. Three main types of shifts have been paid attention to including syntactic, semantic and stylistic shifts. First models like the ones introduced by Catford and Vinay and Darbelnet mostly had tendency toward syntactic shifts. On the contrary, the later frameworks have studied semantic and stylistic shifts.<p>Undoubtedly, Van Leuven-Zwart’s framework that studies syntactic, semantic and stylistic shifts all together has been one of the most detailed ones. It has been presented to establish and describe shifts in translations of narrative texts. However, some scholars including Toury have not paid attention to this model in shift studies because of its complexities.<p>This paper aims at briefly introducing Van Leuven-Zwart’s framework and speaking about its strengths and drawbacks, respectively, in order that researchers and students get more familiar with this influential model. It also gives some suggestions for further researches.<p>

Abstract:
The objective of this research was to analyze how English address terms in “The Princess Diaries” were translated into Indonesian in “Buku Harian Sang Putri”, which published eight times that might indicate its popularity among Indonesian enthusiasts. This research applied content analysis method, particularly the theory of address terms postulated by Braun and Kridalaksana also the theory of translation strategies proposed by Baker, Newmark, and Vinay and Darbelnet. The data were both target and source address terms in dialogs. The address terms were grouped into subsets of the unit for analysis. The result shows English address terms are translated into 11 Indonesian address terms and ’konstruksi kepemilikan’ by using ten translation strategies. The research also shows that loan-address terms (full-loan and scattered-address terms) are chosen as a strategy to enhance the novel’s source atmosphere though they distort the target culture to some extent. To conclude, address terms aren’t always translated into address terms and pragmatic meaning’s distortion happens though various translation strategies are applied. It is necessary to conduct research on how to minimize loan address terms to maintain the source novel’s atmosphere without distorting the pragmatic meaning of Indonesian culture.

This study is focused on the procedure of verbs’ translation in English (source language) into Indonesian language (target language), and how the mapping of action verb meanings in the procedural text. The research uses qualitative method, employing a cooking book recipe “Step by Step Cooking Balinese Delightful for Everyday” as its data source and its Indonesian translation. The theory used in this research is the theory of Vinay and Darbelnet (in Venuti, 2000) about translation procedures that include borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. The theory of applying the natural semantic metalanguage approach (NSM) proposed by Wierzbicka (1996) is used to discuss the mapping of English action verbs. The theory is applied in order to explain how the Indonesian action verb meanings are mapped into English, with the exponential mapping technique. The description of the mapping meanings including the exponential mapping to the action verb of the Indonesian language has produced a new dimension. This new dimension turns out to be able to explore the meaning of the lexical item including the one that has even a subtle difference, therefore there is no more swirling of meaning. Abstract:

This study looked at punctuation mark and their relevance in written information although; the objective of the study is to discover the relevance of punctuation mark in subtitle: The Foreign audience example and to re-echo the need to have a well punctuated write-up in literary genres. The study sees language as a system of human communication. The problem of the study sets in from lots of poor and wrongly applied punctuations, as various forms of signs are seen to be used in some of the movies of the entertainment industry – Nollywood, which in turn, gives rise to wrong interpretation to the foreign audience of that language, and as such, the foreign learner of a particular language, the Igbo example will not enjoy the supposed information. The study adopted the framework of Vinay and Darbelnet principles and strategies as a guide to solving the problem as one of its principles – equivalence was used to relate the movie wrong punctuated subtitles to their supposed target language. The methodology of explication is equally adopted while the study concludes that punctuation errors are involved with wrong application of punctuation mark to written discourses on where it is not supposed to be since punctuation occurs only in written discourses and not spoken.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
A mutashabihat verse (anthropomorphism) is a verse that contains many interpretations as it has various dimensions of meaning. Explicitation is one of the translation procedures introduced by Vinay and Darbelnet as an effort to make the target language readers understand clearly the implicit meaning contained in the source text. In other words, the implicit meaning contained in the source text can be revealed into the target text through this procedure. A translator whose role is to transfer the meaning of source text is always bounded by a certain ideology that will influence his translation works. This study aims to examine the forms of explicitation used in the translation of the mutashabihat verses in the Quran and relate them to translators’ ideologies. This study adopted a qualitative approach that led to the analysis of text content of the Quran, which is elaborated descriptively by selecting three (3) words found in the text of the Quran that is related to Allah, as the sample of the study which are )يد( ,)استوى( and (أعين ). The corpus texts used are the Malay Quran translation by Abdullah Basmeih, Mahmud Yunus, and Zaini Dahlan. The findings showed that the translation of the mutashabihat verses used various forms of explicitation to enhance a clearer understanding of the target readers to the meaning of the Qur'an, such as lexical specification, the addition of explanatory remarks, additional information in brackets and footnotes. In addition, studies found that Mahmud Yunus and Zaini Dahlan retained the meaning of translated mutashabihat verses literally without giving an esoteric interpretation of the Quran and sometimes inclined towards the ideology of al-Ta’wil. On the other hand, Abdullah Basmeih was more prone to the ideologies of al-Ta’wil and al-Ithbat bi Dawabit in translating the verses.

Abstract:
Bulgakov’s novelThe Master and Margarita(1966-1967), a highly complex and multi-levelled narrative, is a challenge for any translator. Because Bulgakov’s narrative has been translated into English seven times (twice by the same translator, Glenny), with the first two translations published in the same year, 1967, and the latest in 2008, the novel offers a unique insight into the analysis of translation shifts, not merely from a synchronic, but also from a diachronic perspective. The emphasis here is on the translation of historicalrealia, referred to asSovietisms, and pertaining to items characteristic of Soviet discourse of the 1930s, word-formations of the non-standard “Soviet Russian.” Bulgakov’s language is sated with Soviet vocabulary which refers to various cultural and socio-political elements of Soviet reality.Sovietismsoccur at various levels (lexical, syntactical, stylistic and rhetorical) and should be carefully translated as a significant characteristic of Bulgakov’s style. A complete domestication ofSovietismsmay lead to a loss of a connotative meaning essential for understanding the context, while a foreignization of these terms which are most likely unknown to Western readers may disturb the fluency of reading. The purpose of the analysis, thus, is to illustrate the use of domesticating/foreignizing strategies employed by the translators and to assess the translation choices, considering that the target audience of English-speaking readers are most likely completely unfamiliar with most terms. The analysis employs theory on foreignizing and domesticating principles, as well as taxonomies suggested by Vinay and Darbelnet (1958/1989), Vlakhov and Florin (1980) and Aixelá (1996) as the grounds for the case study.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Delivering exactly and accurately the same message of a text under minor bias and without any form and meaning shifts in another language has always becoming the final-purpose of a translation process as the main objective of translation is transferring the message of a text in one language into another one by highly considering on how the readers of another language will understand and enjoy the translation while obtaining the needed information. Most of the time, the difficulties of expressing similar message in another language lays on the different interpretation due to the different culture. To deal with it, a translator must be a ‘balance-bilingualist’ as she/he must understand well the languages involved in the translation process. Sometimes, the error in translation occurs when the structure of the first language/the source language (SL) of the translator influence the translation in second language/ target language (TL). To analyse the error, Error Analysis Theory from Richard (1974) and Types of Error in producing English from Dulay (1982) is used as it is aimed at revealing the kinds or error along with the factors influencing the error. This research is done to describe the error in public translation such as billboard, banner and decoration containing wise words around Semarang City to show the kinds of error and the factors influencing those errors along with the way the translator translate the text under Translation Theory from Catford (1965) and Nida and Taber (1969) also Translation Model from Venuti (2000) and Translation Method and Technique/ Procedure from Vinay and Darbelnet (1958). The result shows that most of the errors are in generalization that happened as a result of the influence of the first language/SL structure and writing system that is different with that of the second language/TL.

Abstract:
Translation has been classified into the humanities since its inception. Its establishment as a science has a special theory that has gone through many stages. This required intellectual innovation that began with extensive practice, and later moved to theorizing. The theorists of the 1950s sought to formulate proposals that were characterized by their important methodology and their focus on key and specific linguistics issues, and stressed the need to prove that translation issues and problems belong the field of linguistics. In this way, translation has gained its linguistics and pedagogical dimensions. Thus it has become possible to describe translations departing from the source and target languages. Additionally, it has become possible teaching translation as the process of moving from one language to another to the extent that some researchers, after the expansion of translation studies, started considering it a pure applied linguistics practice. In this study, I elaborate the contribution of linguistics in theorizing translation by tracking the work of a group of linguists, including Nida in his project of theorizing the science of translation, Vinay and Darbelnet through his model of translation transformations, Catford in his approach to translation transformations within the framework of applied linguistics, Roman Jacobson regarding his proposals in the semiotics approaches, and George Monan in the linguistic theory approach to translation, and Fedorov in his contribution to the modern Theory of Translation...The objectives of this are to monitor the nature of the interest of these linguistics researchers and the specific background knowledge of each one of them, the nature of the conceptual devices and the analysis and classification mechanisms surrounding the problems faced by translators, particularly the difficulties of analyzing the source text and reformulating the target text through an awareness of the difference between languages.

Abstract:
Purpose: To study the existence of the Arabic language in the Indonesian language mostly limited to terms used in Islam religion. Methodology: This article discusses the existence of Arabic literature in the Indonesian source text, a novel with the life in a pesantren as the setting, where the author of the source text needs to translate the Arabic expressions used in the story into Indonesian. Then from the Indonesian source text, the novel is translated into English. The method used in this research is the descriptive comparative method. The leading theory used for this research is the strategies of Translation by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995), what Arabic linguistic units involved in the Indonesian source text, and what strategy of conversion used by the author and the translator become the objectives of this research. Principal Findings: The results show that the Arabic linguistic units found are ranging from a word into a clause or sentence, and the strategies of Translation used in the target text do not always deal with one single procedure; sometimes, it involves a combination of some procedures. Applications of this study: The translation work may lead to similar as well as a contrastive linguistic phenomenon. People can learn more about languages involving in a translation, particularly when the structures of the source and target language are compared linguistically. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study covers the gap left in the previous research carried out by the same team entitled “Translation Equivalences of Islamic Terms in the Novel (The Land of Five Towers ‘Negeri Lima Menara’). This previous research used the same data source, Arabic expressions, in the novel. It focused more on the Arabic feelings relating to Islamic terms, such as names of five obligational prayers, names of optional prayers, activities in shalat, or praying. The rest of the Arabic phrases which are not used in this previous research are left unstudied.
