Full textThe dead language called "Tocharian" had been used in the vast area fromt Turfan to Tumshuq on the northern route of the Silk Road. The manuscripts date approximately from 5th to 11th century CE. Now, they are preserved in museums and libraries of England, Germany, France, Russia, China and Japan. The decipherment, translation and interpretation of these texts have shown that the Tocharian Buddhism of Agni (Šorcǔq) and Kucha regions belonged to the Hīnayāna branch, namely to the Sarvāstivādin school for the most part. The Buddhist canonical literature can be divided into three parts: Sūtra, Vinaya and Abhidharma. The Sūtra contains the teaching of the Buddha, the Vinaya is about the discipline for buddhist monks and nuns, and the Abhidharma is the philosophical commentary of the Sūtra. In addition, the Vinaya can be divided generally into three genres, the one is the Prātimokṣas̄utran, the other the Vinayavibhaṅga with the Vinayavastu and the Parivāra, and the third the Karmavācanā. The aim of this study is to study all the fragments written in tocharian belonging to the Prātimokṣas̄utra, the Vinayavibhaṅga and the Karmavācanā, especially through comparison with parallel texts written in chinese, sanskrit and pali in order to elucidate the position of Vinaya-literature in tocharian in the history of buddhism

Full textThe chief purpose of this work is to provide a complete translation of the lokottaravadin bhikshuni-vinaya and bhikshuni-prakirnaka, which constitute the only complete disciplinary text known so far in sanskrit, about buddhist nuns. The translation is based on the printed edition of the text by g. Roth, corrected according to my own readings (listed in the "collation of the manuscript"). The commentary aims at pointing out: 1) the structure of the technical parts of the text (ecclesiastical procedures, etc. ), which are difficult to understand at first reading, due to copist's mistakes and omissions; 2) the problems pertaining to the constitution of the text as we have it now: it is quite clearly the result of the compilation of heterogeneous material, sometimes badly patched together (especially in the longer narrative parts, which call to mind the compilation of a connected text from the same school, the mahavastu). The present thesis may provide a basis for future research about the constitution of the normative canon law buddhist texts; this implies taking into account the chinese and tibetan texts about nuns from other buddhist schools
