Full textThrough the study of the artistic, intellectual and social aspects of painter Vincenzo Camuccini’s (1771-1844) career, this PhD research is meant to expand the knowledge of European art history between the French Revolution and the Bourbon Restoration.Regarded as one of the leading artists of his time since he was young, Camuccini held high office in the Pontifical administration for several years (Saint Luke Academy and Vatican Museums). From the study of his historical paintings he emerges as the leading representative in Europe of a late neoclassicism characterized by an axiomatic adherence to historical sources and a mediated approach to contemporary history through the lens of past styles. His religious paintings attest his participation in the development of the papacy’s cultural policy. Since his death in 1844 such firmly academic artist has been condemned by the critics. This monographic study is aimed at a reassessment of Camuccini’s career allowing for a new regard on the relationship between art, politics and religion both within the Vatican State and in Europe between the end of the 18th century and the first part of the 19th century

Full textWith his work "Imagini degli dei degli antichi" published in Venice in 1556 and, later, in multiple extended and illustrated editions, the committed Vincenzo Cartari, protégé of the Este dukes, created the first Italian mythographic volume in vulgar language, circulated and translated in all modern Europe. Cartari revised the traditional Latin sources with educational intents and accuracy towards the sources: like the detailed "Genealogie deorum gentilium" by Giovanni Boccaccio, the previous "De deis gentium varia et multiplex historia" by Lilio Gregorio Giraldi, the remarkable "Fasti" by Ovid, which he also commented and translated. Above all, he introduced the fantastic heritage of fables and commentaries of the Classics, with Egyptian, Middle-Eastern, Saxon influences to a bright and lively original interpretation: the Ekphrasis. The Gods and the procession of inferior creatures, the legendary tales and their attributes follow one another with an iconic and selective approach. In a triumph of refined Neoplatonic Petrarchism and classic Renaissance picta poesis, he represented only the conceivable and distinctive attributes of these mythical figures: so that all matters relevant to the ancient figures are «thoroughly explained», «with images of almost all the gods and the reasons they were thus depicted». Hence, "Imagini" was favoured by elegant educated courtiers as well as artists and writers, ceramists and artisans. It staged a sort of «user manual» ready for the ink of the poet or the brush of the painter, an evocative collection of «figurative booklets» evoked by Paolo Veronese and Giorgio Vasari, the Carracci and Nicolas Poussin. Finally, it proved to be an erudite summa that attracts criticism and revisions: the antiquarian Lorenzo Pignoria from Padua, in 1615 and again in 1626, added archeological and comparative appendices with regard to the Ancient Reign of the Pharaohs and the exotic idols of the Orient and the New World.

Vincenzo Galilei (1520?-1590) was born at Santa Maria a Monte, a small city near Florence. He was a music-theorist, a lutenist and a teacher. He was sent to Venice to start theoretical studies with Gioseffo Zarlino and interested in the studies of ancient texts, he was helped by the philologist Girolamo Mei. Galilei had basically two main goals. The first was to clarify, what he called misunderstood facts of the history of music and the second was to restore music to its original place among the sciences. Therefore he explored the nature of ancient music in a very detailed and systematic fashion and provided novelties based mostly on the results of his investigative method. In experimenting with different materials, cotton, metal, wood, etc., combined into different shapes, Galilei showed to take matter into account to know how it affects the behavior of the instruments. Despite the fact that Music was based on the concept of number, and that most of the musical theorists of the sixteenth century were not interested in the physical nature of sound or in the materials that produce it, Vincenzo Galilei succeeded to provide to Music a new basis, named sound

Full textVincenzo Rabito (1899-1981), an unschooled Sicilian, wrote two immense autobiographical typescriptscovering his extraordinary journey through the 20th century in Italy as a member of the most underprivileged social classes. In his writing, which mixes Sicilian with Italian, words are graphically modelled on pronunciation and separated by punctuation marks. The text strongly echoes oral traditions as the discourse becomes digressive, intertwining life and fantasy. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the second typescript in the aim of translating it into French. Using the relation to linguistic otherness as the main thread, this research falls into three successive parts. The first one uses the life, language and work of the author in context and develop the idea of ‘Outside Literature’; it analyses the publication process and conditions of reception in Italy and in France as well, as the latter is characterised by its highly normative relation to language. The second part which is dedicated to Rabito’s text, analyses the language of the author, the narrative structure and stylistic devices. Questioning the dichotomies which are at work in translation theory, the last part develops the notion of hybridity and displacement to build the translation of Rabito’s text – a subjective project aiming at achieving a balance between the specificities of the original text and the demand for readability required by any prospect of publication. This thesis ends with the translation of twenty pages extracted from the typescript under scrutiny, as a prelude to its coming publication

Full textThis thesis aims to examine the material reality and construction techniques of historic Venetian architecture of the sixteenth century through the figure of Vincenzo Scamozzi (1548-1616). Writing a glossary is the first part of the aim, examining the lexicon used by the architect in Books VII and VIII and the Indice Copiosissimo of L’Idea dell’Architettura Universale (1615). In those books, the compendium between theory and constructional praxis can be found. The transcription of the books mentioned above, resulting in the second part of the thesis, was necessary to investigate the lexical, orthographic, and grammatical variations. The glossary contains 430 lemmas cataloged in specific forms. Each form comprises definitions, quotes from L’Idea, frequency, orthographic changes, related lemmas, sources and possible notes. The semantic richness can be deduced both from the continuous references in the marginal notes of the treaty to historical and contemporary artistic and architectural sources, revealing the encyclopedic character of the treaty, and from the use of Venetian terms that testify to his direct experience in the design and in the related construction sites in contact with the workers.

Full textVincenzo Cardarelli (1887-1959), poet, prose writer and founder of La Ronda review (1919-1923), remains primarily associated to the under taking of the classical restoration of the review, and therefore, to the “art prose” genre, where together with Emilio Cecchi (1884-1966), he would be an uncontested master. After an historical and theoretical analysis of the notion of “art prose”, where we propose a poetic definition rather than a generic one, an overall analysis of Cardarelli’s work, as in comparison with Emilio Cecchi’s and Riccardo Bacchelli’s work, enables us to differentiate from Cardarelli’s work what we called the “ art prose myth”. On the other hand, it also enables us to update the construction, both in prose as well as in poetics, of a truly “autobiographical myth”. By showing how this “isolated” voice (according to Montale’s expression) makes its way throughout its time, a mediation role assured by Cardarelli is revealed. At the same time, he defines himself as a precursor of hermeticism and as a single interpretor of the “autobiographical myth”, forged by La Voce writers, which he uses in order to offer a completely personal thinking process which reveals a resolutely modern practice of “self” writing

Full textVincenzo Monti's experiment took place between 1786 and 1802. As a majour poet of Italian, Neoclassicism, Vincenzo Monti contributed to reform the genre with his three tragic plys : Aristodemo, Galeotto Manfredi, Caio Gracco. While referring to illustrious sources and role models - ranging from William Shakespeare to Vittorio Alfieri, from Carlo De Dottori to Marie-Joseph Chénier, from Metastasio to Voltaire - Monti manages to create an autonomous, modern tragic language by humanizing his characters and dealing with tragic issues. Themes that tackle family life, women's misfortunes, craziness and melancholy, as well as the creation of labyrinths in which intimate feelings are staged, all heralded 19th century Bourgeois theatre. If such elements are already found in comic theatre at the dawn of the Enlightenment, their emergence in tragic theatre is preoccupation for the dawn of the 18th century, Vincenzo Monti plays a great part in the creation of modern theatre by influening the authors of plays in prose and musical theatre over the following century
Mangione, Vincenzo. "Analisi grafica del progetto di Paolo Labisi per i padri crociferi di Noto." Thesis, Università degli Studi di Catania, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10761/142.
Full textThe thesis has the intention to show that beyond the photographic reproduction of the drawings, there's a critique analysis realized by one of the most important architects of the 18th century in Sicily. Such fame is granted to an intricated personality, entirely for the existing extraordinary collection of his drawings in respect of what he has actually produced . Each single stroke as well as the borehole of his compass relate the story of his difficult project. It is not easy for an architect of the 21st century to understand the drawings represented by Labisi and at the same time to find the explanation of the discrepancies that can be verified between the two. The attitude is undoubtedly different as regards the project. Nowadays the two dimensional representation of the layout, prospect and section are becoming moreover a mechanized result of a project based on a tridimensional space. Analyzing the drawings carefully is easily comprehensible that the succession of the plates which have been ordered by the same author do not correspond chronologically to their draft. This deduction has originated from the numerous discrepancies verified in the representation. At first they have been judged as imprecisions accomplished by the designer, but after an accurate analysis one can understand that the discrepancies have been modified as a result of new clients demands. To understand better in which context the architect had to work, it was essential to study the socio-cultural condition of Noto in the following years of 1693. The attention is contracted on the drawings which have been photographed, digitalized, analyzed in every detail and intersected to try to understand the relationship and verify the contents. The survey has proceeded with a historical and geometrical research on the existing factors. The campaign has been carried out solely to reproduce the representation according to the order applied by Labisi. The subsequent comparison between the project and the survey has enabled to understand that what has been represented, in fact during the research the drawings have been the barycentre of the survey. In fact they have been the confirmation of the information originated from the numerous interpretations. In brief the result of the analysis which have been executed, has come to a conclusion that the buildings in Via Bovio proposes only in part the idea that Labisi has outlined in 1750.

Full textThis research follows the trajectory of Italian photographer Vincenzo Pastore, who lived in São Paulo between 1899 and 1918. If Pastore, on the one hand, produced commercial portraits in studio during his life, on the other, his most emblematic production was the series of photographs taken on the streets and surroundings of São Paulo\'s capital. The path trodden by Vincenzo Pastore entwines with that of his images in this analysis, in a research focused on the social processes that built both paths: that of the photographer and of his pictures. This study tried to understand two main issues. From a historical point of view, we document the practice and the experience of Pastore as a portrait photographer of remarkable penchant for photo-pictorialism. We followed Pastore\'s path not only in the métier of the portrait in São Paulo, but also in Potenza and Bari, Italian cities where the photographer worked. The research, also carried out on the collections and archives in the region of Puglia and Basilicata, provided a historical approach, which outlined the many challenges of Italian portrait painters, who were constantly searching for more favorable conditions to live by the production of portraits in south of Italy, often forced to undergo the experience of migration. We documented more deeply the agency process on the images produced on the streets of São Paulo, between 1908 and 1914, but that entered an appropriation and circulation circuit only after 1996, when the photographers descendant\'s donated the photos to the Moreira Salles Institute.

He articulates itself in three parts considerating Malacarne's anatomical research’s, his clinical studies and his position in the history of brain and cerebellum investigations. This work concentrates its analyse on his anatomophysiological, clinical and pathological thoughts. It concludes about the following theory : Malacarne makes an important link between form and degree of composition of the cerebral structures with the faculties of the intellect. This correlation is based on an organic quantification of the mental faculties confirmed by clinical and pathological fields. An ideological project is also realised. .

Full textA previously unknown document, which has been recently discovered in the National Archive of Florence, contains the census of Vincenzio Borghini’s library and heritage (manuscripts, printed editions, drawings). The document has encouraged new research on documents and materials belonged to the benedictine Prior. The first part of this project focuses on the philological and textual analysis of the inventory, with particular attention to the XVI century cultural and historical environment in which this collection was built. The information gathered on each item, once stored in a database (since this electronic tool offers the most flexible way to access and process accurately large amount of data), has proven very useful to search and and find manuscripts and editions from the Prior’s library, today scattered in several European and Western libraries, thus unknown by scholars and researchers.
