Abstract:
We propose a violin bowing action recognition system that can accurately recognize distinct bowing actions in classical violin performance. This system can recognize bowing actions by analyzing signals from a depth camera and from inertial sensors that are worn by a violinist. The contribution of this study is threefold: (1) a dataset comprising violin bowing actions was constructed from data captured by a depth camera and multiple inertial sensors; (2) data augmentation was achieved for depth-frame data through rotation in three-dimensional world coordinates and for inertial sensing data through yaw, pitch, and roll angle transformations; and, (3) bowing action classifiers were trained using different modalities, to compensate for the strengths and weaknesses of each modality, based on deep learning methods with a decision-level fusion process. In experiments, large external motions and subtle local motions produced from violin bow manipulations were both accurately recognized by the proposed system (average accuracy > 80%).

ABSTRACTTwo experiments focus on Thai tone perception by native speakers of tone languages (Thai, Cantonese, and Mandarin), a pitch–accent (Swedish), and a nontonal (English) language. In Experiment 1, there was better auditory-only and auditory–visual discrimination by tone and pitch–accent language speakers than by nontone language speakers. Conversely and counterintuitively, there was better visual-only discrimination by nontone language speakers than tone and pitch–accent language speakers. Nevertheless, visual augmentation of auditory tone perception in noise was evident for all five language groups. In Experiment 2, involving discrimination in three fundamental frequency equivalent auditory contexts, tone and pitch–accent language participants showed equivalent discrimination for normal Thai speech, filtered speech, and violin sounds. In contrast, nontone language listeners had significantly better discrimination for violin sounds than filtered speech and in turn speech. Together the results show that tone perception is determined by both auditory and visual information, by acoustic and linguistic contexts, and by universal and experiential factors.

Abstract:
ObjectiveClozapine is used in the management of treatment-resistant schizophrenia and is effective in reducing aggression; however a subgroup of patients is poorly responsive. For violent patients in this group, there is limited literature on the use of strategies to augment clozapine with other agents. Here we present a case series of 6 schizophrenia patients, within a high-security hospital, who have a history of serious violence and who were treated with clozapine augmented with amisulpride.MethodsWe reviewed case notes and health records for evidence of violence/aggression and positive factors such as engagement in activities, and Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scores were formulated. We also examined metabolic parameters before and after augmentation.ResultsAll 6 of the patients showed clinical improvement in symptoms and a reduction in their risk of violence to others. Five patients had a reduction in number of violent/aggressive incidents, and all patients showed improvement in engagement in occupational, vocational, and/or psychological work. Metabolic parameters were largely unchanged except for 1 patient whose Body Mass Index (BMI) increased. Five patients reported side effects as unchanged or improved.ConclusionThese schizophrenia patients with a history of violence showed clinical improvement and reduced aggression and violence with amisulpride augmentation of clozapine. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an antiaggressive benefit of this combination in forensic psychiatric patients. Further studies are warranted to establish the efficacy and anti-aggressive effects of amisulpride augmentation of clozapine.

Abstract:
I argue in this article that race – reconceptualised against the post-racial logic of racial neoliberalism as a material relationship rather than simply an identity – functions within the logic of radicalisation in Australian anti-terrorism to produce the conditions necessary for the reproduction of neoliberal capitalism. Taking theoretical cues from the arguments of David Theo Goldberg and Stuart Hall, I argue that the logic of radicalisation within this process mobilises the raced spectral figure of the essentially violent, extremist Muslim ‘other’ to two key ends: first, the invisibilisation of the political motivations and grievances underpinning the actions of those who commit terrorist violence; second, the reproduction of neoliberal capitalism through the fashioning of neoliberal subjectivities, the salving of collective anxieties at the effects of neoliberal restructuring via ‘authoritarian populism’, and the innovation of new – and augmentation of existing – opportunities for profit and accumulation.

Abstract:
Existing data on building destruction in conflict zones rely on eyewitness reports or manual detection, which makes it generally scarce, incomplete, and potentially biased. This lack of reliable data imposes severe limitations for media reporting, humanitarian relief efforts, human-rights monitoring, reconstruction initiatives, and academic studies of violent conflict. This article introduces an automated method of measuring destruction in high-resolution satellite images using deep-learning techniques combined with label augmentation and spatial and temporal smoothing, which exploit the underlying spatial and temporal structure of destruction. As a proof of concept, we apply this method to the Syrian civil war and reconstruct the evolution of damage in major cities across the country. Our approach allows generating destruction data with unprecedented scope, resolution, and frequency—and makes use of the ever-higher frequency at which satellite imagery becomes available.

Abstract:
Neauvia Intense is biocompatible, injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) filler PEG cross-linked for facial soft-tissue augmentation that provides volume to tissues. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the sensitivity of Neauvia Intense in hyaluronidase from bovine testes in a time-course analysis. The test is based on the colourimetric determination of the N-acetyl – D - glucosamine (NAG) released by the hyaluronidase in standardised conditions. The in vitro conditions involve the treatment of Neauvia Intense with a known concentration of the enzyme (6080U/ml). The NAG content was determined at different times to assess the kinetics of the degradation (1h, 3h, 6h, 24h, 48h, 72h, 120h, and 168h); the Ehrlich’s reagent was used for the colourimetric quantification, by the method described by Reissing and colleagues. The intensity of the violet colour developed after the chemical reaction was proportional to the NAG present in each sample. A microplate reader at 585 nm read the absorbance. The amount of NAG released by the product was proportional to the time of incubation with bovine hyaluronidase, reaching a plateau after 168 hours.

Abstract:
Large-eddy simulations of a compressible turbulent square duct flow at low Mach number are described. First, we consider the isothermal case with all the walls at the same temperature: good agreement with previous incompressible DNS and LES results is obtained both for the statistical quantities and for the turbulent structures. A heated duct with a higher temperature prescribed at one wall is then considered and the intensity of the heating is varied widely. The increase of the viscosity with temperature in the vicinity of the heated wall turns out to play a major rôle. We observe an amplification of the near-wall secondary flows, a decrease of the turbulent fluctuations in the near-wall region and, conversely, their enhancement in the outer wall region. The increase of the viscous thickness with heating implies a significant augmentation of the size of the characteristic flow structures such as the low- and high-speed streaks, the ejections and the quasi-longitudinal vorticity structures. For strong enough heating, the size limitation imposed by the lateral walls leads to a single low-speed streak located near the duct central plane surrounded by two high-speed streaks on both sides. Violent ejections of slow and hot fluid from the heated wall are observed, linked with the central low-speed streak. A selective statistical sampling of the most violent ejection events reveals that the entrainment of cold fluid, originated from the duct core, at the base of the ejection and its subsequent expansion amplifies the ejection intensity.

Introduction La plupart des matchs de la Ligue nationale de hockey (LNH) télédiffusés comportent des mises en échec violentes, des coups illégaux et des altercations. Nous avons émis l'hypothèse que les joueurs des ligues de hockey mineur imitaient de tels comportements et que le fait de ne pas regarder ces matchs se traduirait par une réduction du taux de blessures chez les joueurs de hockey plus jeunes. Méthodologie En utilisant un modèle quasi expérimental, nous avons comparé sept ans de matchs de la LNH télédiffusés (2002–2009) avec l'année du lock-out de la LNH (2004–2005). Nous avons utilisé les données du Système canadien hospitalier d'information et de recherche en prévention des traumatismes (SCHIRPT) pour caractériser les blessures et déterminer si elles étaient attribuables à un contact intentionnel ou à des actes illégaux, ce qui inclut les altercations. Résultats Nous n'avons observé aucune différence significative entre les proportions de blessures tous types confondus et celles liées à un contact intentionnel, un acte violent ou un acte illégal chez les joueurs de sexe masculin des ligues de hockey mineur entre l'année où les joueurs professionnels ont été en lock-out et les années précédentes et suivantes. Conclusion Nous concluons que le fait de ne pas voir de matchs télédiffusés de la LNH comportant des scènes violentes pourrait ne pas se traduire par une réduction des blessures, même si un effet possible pourrait avoir été masqué puisque nous avons observé une augmentation marquée, durant le lock-out, du nombre de spectateurs aux matchs des ligues mineures professionnelles où la violence est tout aussi présente.

Abstract:
In times of crisis there is an unmistakable tendency to augment and extend the powers of the executive branch. This centralizing tendency has been exhibited in numerous legal systems and through varied kinds of crisis. More recently, similar trends have been much in evidence in the United States, and a corresponding academic discourse defending and extolling the virtues of such augmentation has emerged. This Article is skeptical of the virtues of such advice and its ultimate policy benefits. We assert that there are substantial dangers to the centralization of crisis powers in times of emergency. These tendencies hold particular perils for the democratic state. Moreover, the rush to create or cement decision and review making hierarchies can be antithetical to the project of utilizing the strengths of rule of law based societies to respond to the challenges posed by violent actors. The purported benefits of excluding, or at best sidelining, the courts from review of executive actions of crisis regulation are particularly ill-conceived. Such proposals consistently fail to engage with the importance of across-the-board institutional legal engagement with state action in times of crisis. The success and value of such engagement cannot be measured from the crisis vantage point. Rather it requires an assessment beyond the moment of exception, factoring in a return to normalcy and the impact on law and legal institutions in the post-crisis phase. We assert that scholars advocating for exclusive executive supremacy in times of crisis fail to measure the harms that may be caused by inept or illegal state action, not only as experienced by individual victims but to the broader project of discouraging and dissuading the resort to group based violence.

Abstract:
Learning violin is a challenging task requiring execution of pitch tasks with the left hand using a strong aural feedback loop for correctly adjusting pitch, concurrent with the right hand moving a bow precisely with correct pressure across strings. Real-time technological assistance can help a student gain feedback and understanding helpful for learning and maintaining motivation. This thesis presents real-time low-cost low-latency violin augmentations that can be used to assist learning the violin along with other real-time performance tasks. To capture bow performance, we demonstrate a new means of bow tracking by measuring bow hair de ection from the bow hair being pressed against the string. Using near- eld optical sensors placed along the bow we are able to estimate bow position and pressure through linear regression from training samples. For left hand pitch tracking, we introduce low cost means for tracking nger position and illustrate the combination of sensed results with audio processing to achieve high accuracy low-latency pitch tracking. We subsequently verify our new tracking methods' e ectiveness and usefulness demonstrating low-latency note onset detection and control of real-time performance visuals. To help tackle the challenge of intonation, we used our pitch estimation to develop low latency pitch correction. Using expert performers, we veri ed that fully correcting pitch is not only disconcerting but breaks a violinist's learned pitch feedback loop resulting in worse asplayed performance. However, partial pitch correction, though also linked to worse as-played performance, did not lead to a signi cantly negative experience con rming its potential for use to temporarily reduce barriers to success. Subsequently, in a study with beginners, we veri ed that when the pitch feedback loop is underdeveloped, automatic pitch correction did not signi cantly hinder performance, but o ered an enjoyable low-pitch error experience and that providing an automatic target guide pitch was helpful in correcting performed pitch error.

Abstract:
In recent years, deep learning, a critical technology in computer vision, has achieved remarkable milestones in many fields, such as image classification and object detection. In particular, it has also been introduced to address the problem of violence detection, which is a big challenge considering the complexity to establish an exact definition for the phenomenon of violence. Thanks to the ever increasing development of new technologies for surveillance, we have nowadays access to an enormous database of videos that can be analyzed to find any abnormal behavior. However, by dealing with such huge amount of data it is unrealistic to manually examine all of them. Deep learning techniques, instead, can automatically study, learn and perform classification operations. In the context of violence detection, with the extraction of visual harmful patterns, it is possible to design various descriptors to represent features that can identify them. In this research we tackle the task of generating new augmented datasets in order to try to simplify the identification step performed by a violence detection technique in the field of Deep Learning. The novelty of this work is to introduce the usage of DensePose model to enrich the images in a dataset by highlighting (i.e. by identifying and segmenting) all the human beings present in them. With this approach we gained knowledge of how this algorithm performs on videos with a violent context and how the violent detection network benefit from this procedure. Performances have been evaluated from the point of view of segmentation accuracy and efficiency of the violence detection network, as well from the computational point of view. Results shows how the context of the scene is the major indicator that brings the DensePose model to correct segment human beings and how the context of violence does not seem to be the most suitable field for the application of this model since the common overlap of bodies (distinctive aspect of violence) acts as disadvantage for the segmentation. For this reason, the violence detection network does not exploit its full potential. Finally, we understood how such augmented datasets can boost up the training speed by reducing the time needed for the weights-update phase, making this procedure a helpful adds-on for implementations in different contexts where the identification of human beings still plays the major role.
