Abstract:
This thesis addresses questions about the tension in the history of sociology between academic self-description and the practical actuality of ‘doing sociology’ in traditionally broader social and political contexts. In focusing on the work and careers of three socially committed sociological researchers: Gunnar and Alva Myrdal and Viola Klein, it aims to show that activities in the margin of a discipline in themselves constitute an important field of inquiry illustrating the inherent dilemmas and tensions of the discipline: between science and values, theory and practice, the ideological and

Isaac J. Barrera, a noted scholar of Ecuadorian literature, succinctly described the nineteenth-century Liberal essayist, Juan Montalvo, in this way. "Two completely different aspects exist in the intellectual personality of Montalvo, that of the elegant, traditional writer ... and that of the terrible polemicist, possessing a scathing pen [and] ignited rage." Indeed, it was Montalvo's "scathing pen" and "ignited rage" combined with his exceptional mastery of the Castillian language which distinguished his writing from that of other Ecuadorian reformers. Yet, the Ecuadorian's insulting polemic

Abstract:
My thesis examines the work of contemporary crime fiction author James Ellroy, focusing on his representation of the constitution of masculine subjectivity through the ritualised repetition of violence. Locating his texts in postwar America, Ellroy reconstructs this as an era saturated with violence, whose ideological fabric is woven from the intersecting strands of misogyny, racism and homophobia. Elucidating these inequitable power relations, I adapt Kristeva’s theory of abjection to suggest that Ellroy divides his textual universe into the mutually exclusive realms of a domain of “viab
