Abstract:
Hepatitis means ‘inflammation of the liver’ and is manifest with symptoms that include malaise, anorexia, fever, flu-like symptoms, and pain in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, with the pain being caused by swelling of the liver and its capsule. Elevations in circulating hepatic enzymes, particularly aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase, are common, with jaundice occurring some time after the onset of other symptoms and signs. There are five viruses that primarily cause viral hepatitis: hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E viruses, abbreviated HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, and HEV, respectivel

Protocol to estimate mortality from cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma attributable to viral hepatitis B and C. Pan American Health Organization, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275123768.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the goals to be achieved by 2030 of the Global Health Sector Strategy on Viral Hepatitis 2016-2021 is to reduce mortality from hepatitis viruses B (HBV) and C (HCV). To measure and monitor it, countries need to implement a systematic process to generate national estimates of mortality from viral hepatitis, which many lack. This document is aimed at the institutions and/or ministries in charge of monitoring progress in each country. The main objective of this protocol is to present simple methods to estimate the proportion of patients with cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma who have

Abstract:
Viral infection includes any clinical illness caused by a pathogenic virus. Acute viral infections are amongst the most common illnesses of humans and range from minor upper respiratory tract infections to viral haemorrhagic fever. The principles in diagnosing acute viral infection are, first, recognize the syndrome, then identify key features that might suggest a specific diagnosis, and, finally, consider laboratory investigations to elucidate the specific causative agent. The host–pathogen response determines different outcomes for specific viral infections. After infection with some viruses

Abstract:
A corollary of the high proportion of people who inject drugs cycling through prisons worldwide is the accompanying high prevalence of viral hepatitis, particularly hepatitis C (HCV). Prisons have the potential to either escalate or interrupt the transmission of viral hepatitis: prisons that do not provide access to even basic prevention programs are high-risk environments for viral hepatitis transmission. In contrast, prisons can also reduce prevalence through testing and treatment programs. This chapter provides an overview of the global prevalence and incidence of HCV and hepatitis B (HBV)

Abstract:
Disease prevention is usually directed where there is considerable morbidity or mortality, and etiological factors that can be controlled, treated, or reduced. The greatest morbidity and mortality from gastrointestinal disease is related to infectious diarrhoea and gastrointestinal cancer, both of which can be prevented. Smoking has been closely associated with oesophageal, gastric, and liver cancer and also has a significant effect in inflammatory bowel disease. In addition, alcohol consumption and viral hepatitis are preventable causes of liver disease, liver failure, and hepatic cancer. Thi
