Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract. The paper presents the case study of the complete 3D survey of the area of the Fort of Pietole in Borgo Virgilio using the Leica Pegasus Backpack wearable Mobile Mapping System (MMS). Surveying the site is challenging because of its complex topology on the one hand (with notably narrow passages) and because of the presence of vegetation on the other. The framework within which this research takes place is the Fort of Pietole survey project that aims at the extraction of the Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of the area and the georeferencing of the fort defensive structures. The requirement of the project is the 3D reconstruction of the whole area at an accuracy that stands between a big scale environmental survey and a small-scale architectonic survey (1 : 500).

The project is the opportunity to discuss the state of the art of wearable MMS, and to test the versatility and accuracy outcomes of the Pegasus Backpack under varying and challenging condition (indoor-outdoor, even-uneven pavement, satellite covered-denied areas) with the ambitious goal to use only the backpack MMS to record all the data from the DTM to the indoor narrow structures.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:
Abstract:
Background:Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a segmental, necrotizing vascular disease that primarily impacts medium-sized muscle arteries. The estimated annual incidence of PAN is still lacking in China. Digital gangrene is an ischemic manifestation of the limb. However, the causes and the treatment methods vary from case to case, and the outcome is unpredictable. These features emphasize the need to identify measurable variables that accelerate digital gangrene development in PAN patients. However, little effort has been made to identify the clinical and laboratory factors that affect PAN patients with digital gangrene to anticipate their natural history and response to therapy. Objectives:Many patients with polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) complicated with digital gangrene have poor outcomes and related research information is limited. This study was carried out to identify the associated risk and prognostic factors. Methods:We conducted a retrospective study of 148 PAN patients admitted to Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) from September 1986 to December 2018. The characteristics, therapeutic regimens, and outcome data for patients with and without gangrene were compared. The Kaplan–Meier method and Cox hazard regression model were used to evaluate the prognostic factors.Results:Forty-seven (31.8%) PAN patients had digital gangrene complications. The average age was 40.4±17.9 years and the average disease duration was 11 (4-27) months. The presence of digital gangrene was correlated with smoking history [odds ratio (OR), 4.27; 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 1.56-11.66] and eosinophil elevation (28.12; 10.30-76.8). Thirty-two (68.1%) gangrene patients received methylprednisolone pulse therapy and all of these patients were treated with cyclophosphamide. Nine patients suffered irreversible organ injury and two died. Disease duration ≥ 24 months and elevated serum C-reactive protein (CRP) were identified as hazardous factors for poor prognosis in patients with gangrene (P=0.003, HR=8.668, 95% CI 2.11, 35.55 andP=0.042, HR=27.062, 95% CI 1.13, 648.57, respectively). Conclusion:Smoking history and eosinophil elevation in PAN patients were more prone to digital gangrene and high serum CRP level predicted poor outcomes. PAN patients with smoking history and elevated eosinophils need to be seriously evaluated by clinicians. Furthermore, the CRP level should be efficiently controlled for good prognosis.References:[1]De Virgilio A, Greco A, Magliulo G, Gallo A, Ruoppolo G, Conte M, et al. Abstract:
Of recent editors only Ehwald, I think, prints formosast rather than formosa est. This orthography is supported by that of the capital MSS of Virgil (O. Ribbeck, Prolegomena critica ad P. Vergili Maronis Opera Maiora [1867], 419); the inscriptions offer no consistent guidance. Here, however, the intentions of the writer himself are evident: Ovid must have written formosast to give three words to each season. He can be seen, as so often, improving on his model, here the Virgilian ‘mini-catalogues’ (A. A. R. Henderson, ad loc.) of the Eclogues, exploiting the couplet form to produce a completely symmetrical effect. In his magisterial note on the orthography of prodelision at D.R.N. 1.993 Lachmann confined his remarks on the elegists to the last word of the pentameter, and his conclusion is asserted rather than argued. Here we have contemporary evidence that by Ovid at least the syncopated form was written as well as spoken.

To that end, regional tests were performed on 12 lines of Virginia tobacco that permitted selection of a promising line (Virginia 4-3-30) for which the effects of the principal components of production over cultivar yield were evaluated. The most outstanding characteristics of the chosen cultivar are as follows: clear green plant color, conical shape, wide leaf area, an average of 22 leaves, 77 days flowering time, good physical-chemical quality, moderate resistance to common tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and to root-node nematodes. The marginal worth of this cultivar surpasses various commercial genotypes.

Abstract:
Phytophthora ramorum, the causal agent of sudden oak death, poses a threat to woody plants in the rest of the United States. Several plant species native to Gulf Coast and southeastern US forests were tested for reaction to P. ramorum, including eastern baccharis (Baccharis halmifolia), spicebush (Lindera benzoin), yaupon (Ilex vomitoria), southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora), sweetbay magnolia (M. virginiana), Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), black willow (Salix nigra), and baldcypress (Taxodium distichum). The foliage of each species was inoculated with a zoospore suspension and placed in a dew chamber for 5 days. The average percentage of leaf area necrosis was 0.2, 4.9, 27.9, 32.1, 8.6, 1.5, 1.1, 0.2, and 5.0% for inoculated eastern baccharis, spicebush, yaupon, southern magnolia, sweetbay magnolia, Virginia creeper (Louisiana), Virginia creeper (Maryland), black willow, and baldcypress, respectively. Comparison of the percent necrotic leaf area between inoculated and non-inoculated plants showed significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) for yaupon (P = 0.0008), southern magnolia (P = 0.001), and sweetbay magnolia (P = 0.0009). The other species did not show significant differences although infection was confirmed on spicebush, Virginia creeper, and baldcypress. This is a first report of yaupon, sweetbay magnolia, and baldcypress being hosts of P. ramorum. Accepted for publication 2 April 2013. Published 30 July 2013.

Abstract:
Background: Data regarding outpatient antibiotic prescribing for urinary tract infections (UTIs) are limited, and they have never been formally summarized in Virginia. Objective: We describe outpatient antibiotic prescribing trends for UTIs based on gender, age, geographic region, insurance payer and International Classification of Disease, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes in Virginia. Methods: We used the Virginia All-Payer Claims Database (APCD), administered by Virginia Health Information (VHI), which holds data for Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance. The study cohort included Virginia residents who had a primary diagnosis of UTI, had an antibiotic claim 0–3 days after the date of the diagnosis and who were seen in an outpatient facility in Virginia between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2016. A diagnosis of UTI was categorized as cystitis, urethritis or pyelonephritis and was defined using the following ICD-10 codes: N30.0, N30.00, N30.01, N30.9, N30.90, N30.91, N39.0, N34.1, N34.2, and N10. The following antibiotics were prescribed: aminoglycosides, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (TMP-SMX), cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, macrolides, penicillins, tetracyclines, or nitrofurantoin. Patients were categorized based on gender, age, location, insurance payer and UTI type. We used χ2 and Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel testing. Analyses were performed in SAS version 9.4 software (SAS Institute, Cary, NC). Results: In total, 15,580 patients were included in this study. Prescriptions for antibiotics by drug class differed significantly by gender (P < .0001), age (P < .0001), geographic region (P < .0001), insurance payer (P < .0001), and UTI type (P < .0001). Cephalosporins were prescribed more often to women (32.48%, 4,173 of 12,846) than to men (26.26%, 718 of 2,734), and fluoroquinolones were prescribed more often to men (53.88%, 1,473 of 2,734) than to women (47.91%, 6,155 of 12,846). Although cephalosporins were prescribed most frequently (42.58%, 557 of 1,308) in northern Virginia, fluoroquinolones were prescribed the most in eastern Virginia (50.76%, 1677 of 3,304). Patients with commercial health insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare were prescribed fluoroquinolones (39.31%, 1,149 of 2,923), cephalosporins (56.33%, 1,326 of 2,354), and fluoroquinolones (57.36%, 5,910 of 10,303) most frequently, respectively. Conclusions: Antibiotic prescribing trends for UTIs varied by gender, age, geographic region, payer status and UTI type in the state of Virginia. These data will inform future statewide antimicrobial stewardship efforts.Funding: NoneDisclosures: Michelle Doll reports a research grant from Molnlycke Healthcare.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Focal mechanisms are presented for 11 earthquakes from the Giles County, Virginia, seismic zone and for 12 earthquakes from the central Virginia seismic zone. These earthquakes (0 ≦ M ≦ 4) were monitored by local networks between January 1978 and October 1984. In Giles County, six single-event focal mechanisms and five composite-event focal mechanisms were determined. In central Virginia, eleven single-event focal mechanisms and four composite-event focal mechanisms were obtained. A computer program, FOCMEC, that systematically searches the focal sphere for valid mechanism solutions, based on both P-wave polarities and (SV/P)z amplitude ratios, was used to determine the focal mechanism solutions. The results for the Giles County seismic zone show predominately strike-slip mechanisms on steeply dipping (73° ± 16°) NNE (right-lateral motion) and ESE (left-lateral motion) trending nodal planes. However, some (4/11) of the solutions show similar movement on nodal planes rotated 45° counterclockwise. The means and standard deviations for the trends and plunges of the P axes are N46°E ± 24° and 13.5° ± 20°, respectively, as computed from the six single-event focal mechanisms and two composite-event focal mechanisms. Focal mechanisms from central Virginia exhibit much more scatter in mechanism types and nodal plane orientations than observed in Giles County. The P axes in central Virginia are generally northeast-trending for shallow earthquakes (<8 km) and northwest-trending for deeper ones (>8 km). The focal mechanisms exhibit a mixture of reverse and strike slip faulting on planes that dip 62° ± 16°. The two Virginia seismic zones are separated by only 200 km, yet their seismogenic characteristics are very different. In Giles County, the earthquakes occur beneath the Appalachian decollement, and the faulting and inferred stress orientations are uniform. In central Virginia, however, the seismicity is occurring at and above the decollement and the associated fault planes and stress orientations are quite variable.

Anco, Daniel J., Maria Balota, Jeffrey C. Dunne, and Nino Brown. "Sound Splits as Influenced by Seed Size for Runner and Virginia Market Type Peanut Shelled on a Reciprocating Sheller." Agronomy 11, no. 9 (September 17, 2021): 1869. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/agronomy11091869.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to examine peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) kernel percent sound splits as a function of sound mature kernel seed size when shelled on a reciprocating sheller. Data were compiled from a total of 139 field experiments conducted in the Virginia-Carolina region and Georgia from 2005 to 2020. Runner and Virginia peanut market types were graded according to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards using standard sheller screens with upper grid sizes corresponding to the red pan from the pre-sizer of 10.3 × 19.1 mm (26/64 × 3/4 ″) and 13.5 × 25.4 mm (34/64 × 1 ″) with minimum bar grid clearances of 8.7 (11/32 ″) and 12.7 mm (1/2 ″), respectively. A subset of runner market type samples was graded using the Virginia sheller screen. Grade data per market type and sheller screen was analyzed separately. Among runner market types shelled with the standard runner-type screen, percent sound splits increased linearly with increasing seed size at the logit rate of 1.16 per sound mature kernel g (p < 0.001). Sound splits for Virginia and runner market types shelled on the standard Virginia-type screen did not significantly vary by kernel size (p = 0.939 and 0.687, respectively). Extra-large kernels (proportion) for Virginia types linearly increased with seed size at 1.91 per sound mature kernel g (logit scale) (p < 0.001). Runner market types sized 75 to 91 g/100 sound mature kernels (605 to 500 seed/lb) were estimated to have a 50% probability of a 2.3 to 4.5% or greater increase in sound splits when shelled with the standard runner-type screen compared to runner-type seed sized 55 g/100 sound mature kernels (820 seed/lb), respectively, equivalent to a potential deduction increase of 1.8 to 4.4 USD /1000 kg. For both Virginia and runner market types, seed weight linearly increased with pod weight at 0.169 and 0.195 g/g (p < 0.001), respectively. Results from this study may be used as a reference to suggest runner-type seed sizes above which larger reciprocating sheller screen utilization in line with USDA grading practices is warranted to reduce mechanically induced sound splits during grading and subsequent economic deduction penalties for corresponding farmer stock peanut.

Abstract:
Purpose: United States Department of Agriculture Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants use SNAP-authorized stores for dietary purchases. Relationships between obesity prevalence and access to grocery and varied nontraditional (eg, dollar, drug, and convenience) SNAP settings are underexplored. This research aimed to determine the association of a full range of SNAP-authorized stores with obesity prevalence in Virginia. Design: The SNAP Retailer Locator was used to cross-sectionally identify authorized stores, and county health ranking information was applied based on store location. Setting: Virginia, United States. Sample: The SNAP-authorized stores, classified among store categories: grocery or supermarket; drug; mass merchandiser; supercenter; convenience; dollar; club; other; nonfood store; farmers markets; and independent grocery stores. Measures: County-level obesity prevalence with income and rurality as potential confounders. Analysis: Multiple linear regression was used to determine associations between county-level adult obesity prevalence and available SNAP-authorized store formats ( P < .05 a priori). Results: Store format was a predictor of obesity prevalence in Virginia in simple and adjusted models ( R 2 = 0.035, P < .0001 and R 2 = 0.434, P < .0001, respectively). Grocery store or supermarket access was associated with obesity. The SNAP-authorized convenience, dollar, and nonfood stores were associated with a 0.3, 0.5, and 1.3 increase in county obesity prevalence, respectively ( P < .05). Conclusions: Research, practice, and health policy approaches to improve grocery, convenience, dollar, and restaurant or delivery service settings may favorably influence community obesity prevalence in Virginia.

Abstract:
Of 20 Plasmopara viticola isolates collected in four locations in Virginia and northwest North Carolina in 2005, 16 were resistant to QoI fungicides. The resistance factor was over 100, and label rates of formulated azoxystrobin and pyraclostrobin provided little or no control of these isolates. Additional sampling in 2006 revealed at least 15 additional vineyards with QoI-resistant P. viticola in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Of 22 isolates of Erysiphe (Uncinula) necator collected in 2005 from five Virginia locations, 20 isolates from 4 locations showed resistance to QoI fungicides. Abstract:
Background. The objective is to analyze and compare Virginia suicide data from 2003 to 2012 to US suicide data.Methods.Suicide trends by method, age, gender, and race were obtained from Virginia’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s annual reports.Results.Similar to US suicide rates, suicide rates in Virginia increased between 2003 and 2012 from 10.9/100,000 people to 12.9/100,000 people. The most common methods were firearm, asphyxia, and intentional drug overdose, respectively. The increase in asphyxia (r=0.77,P≤0.01) and decrease in CO poisoning (r=-0.89,P≤0.01) were significant. Unlike national trends, intentional drug overdoses decreased (r=-0.55,P=0.10). Handgun suicides increased (r=0.61,P=0.06) and are the most common method of firearm suicide. Hanging was the most common method of asphyxia. Helium suicides also increased (r=0.75,P=0.05). Middle age females and males comprise the largest percentage of suicide. Unlike national data, the increase in middle age male suicides occurred only in the 55–64-year-old age group (r=0.79,P≤0.01) and decreased in the 35–44-year-old age group (r=-0.60,P=0.07) and 10–14-year-old age group (r=-0.73,P=0.02). Suicide in all female age ranges remained stable. Caucasians represent the highest percentage of suicide.Conclusion.There has been a rise in suicide in Virginia and suicide rates and trends have closely resembled the national average albeit some differences. Suicide prevention needs to be enhanced.

Abstract:
Bacterial speck of tomato, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato, is an important disease of fresh-market tomatoes along the Eastern Shore of Virginia. P. syringae pv. tomato was first identified in Northampton County on 17 May 1993, using the Biolog software program. During the spring of 1998, a field of tomato plants showed symptoms of bacterial speck. Three isolations on tryptic soy agar were made from symptomatic leaves and fruit tissues taken from young transplanted tomato plants, cv. Sunpride. The isolates were identified as P. syringae pv. tomato, using Biolog. A representative isolate was sent to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Harrisburg, for confirmation. The Virginia isolate was transferred to King's medium B, and identification of P. syringae pv. tomato was confirmed by fulfilling Koch's postulates, matching with the Biolog database, and testing for levan production (+), oxidase reaction (-), potato soft rot (-), arginine dihydrolase production (-), and tobacco hypersensitivity (+). In vitro growth inhibition of the 1998 Virginia P. syringae pv. tomato isolate required anhydrous cupric sulfate at 368 μg/ml compared with only 175 μg/ml for a known copper-sensitive 1998 Pennsylvania isolate. Therefore, the 1998 Virginia isolate was considered a copper-tolerant strain of P. syringae pv. tomato. For field evaluation, three copper treatments and two noncopper treatments were established in a randomized complete block design replicated four times. Treatments were initiated on 19 May and reapplied every 7 days for a total of 10 applications. Three disease ratings were taken every 7 days beginning on 30 June. For copper hydroxide (2.24 kg/ha; Kocide DF) plus mancozeb (2.24 kg/ha; Dithane); chlorothalonil (2.34 liters/ha; Bravo) plus copper salts of fatty and rosin acids (2.34 liters/ha; Tenncop); 2% maneb plus 66% copper sulfate (6.72 kg/ha; Cuprofix); and an untreated control, area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) values were 319, 468, 478, and 438, respectively. There was no significant difference (P = 0.05) between the copper treatments and untreated control, confirming laboratory findings. In contrast, noncopper treatments of acibenzolar (21g/ha; Actigard), and acibenzolar (21 g/ha) plus mancozeb (2.24 kg/ha) (Actigard plus Dithane) were significantly different (P = 0.05) from the untreated control and copper treatments with AUDPC values of 116 and 160, respectively. This is the first report of copper-tolerant P. syringae pv. tomato in Virginia.
