Abstract:
This thesis aims to investigate varieties of committed female virginity, beginning with the suggestion that virginity may be a gendered identity distinct from womanhood. It argues that virginity, as a means by which medieval women can access holiness and evade some aspects of their subordination, has often been neglected by critics in favour of forms of gendered piety which exploit the particular qualities of the medieval female body. Both medieval theology and post-modern gender theory support the claim that the virginal body may be produced in the process of performing a virginal identity. T

This relationship is a Material Reciprocity. In the Timaeus, a concept of a world soul is outlined in which all elements that compose the physical world (the "ten-thousand things" of th

Abstract:
The Clinch and Powell Rivers located in Southwestern Virginia contain some of the most diverse freshwater mussel assemblages found throughout North America. However, in recent decades mussel species decline has been documented by researchers. The presence of coal mining activity in the watersheds has been hypothesized to be linked to the decline of numerous species and the extirpation of others. The effects of various discharges from an active coal preparation plant facility located in Honaker, Virginia were evaluated for acute and chronic toxicity using field and laboratory tests. The res

One of these is intertextuality, which is concerned with the interrelationship between/among different texts. In this thesis, the theme of “reading” will be emphasized in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, Michael Cunningham’s The Hours and David Hare’s The Hours: A Screenplay. The authors and characters in these three texts will be analyzed via theories of intertextuality: those of Roland Barthes (“readerly” texts vs “writerly” texts),
