The use of the Internet has expanded the communication skills of people, generated networking contributes to what came to be called the information society, where everyone is constantly connected, connecting the actors in a huge communication network. Sought to examine how are the relationships and interactions in virtual social network Reseachgate demonstrating through action if the social network established for the promotion of scientific collaboration. Sets as objectives to characterize the relationship of the members of the Institute of Computing department (ICOMP) in the virtual community of the Federal University of Amazonas formed on the social network ReseachGate; categorize the scientific production and positioning of these researchers within the network and to investigate whether there through interaction, there is consolidation of scientific collaboration. It adopts main theoretical supports the concepts of Recuero (2009), Wasserman and Faust (1994), Murphy (2004) and Bardin (2006). The methodology is qualitative and quantitative, based on social network analysis with treatment of metrics analysis by Gephi system and content analysis. As a result of the study was determined that the social network ReseachGate, there is already a network of collaboration, initially formed by contact among researchers within the ICOMP department and the virtual interaction process between the actors, expands establishing a new network scientific collaboration that goes beyond the physical limit and enables the development of projects with researchers from other higher education institutions.
A pesquisa busca examinar como são os relacionamentos e interações na rede social virtual Reseachgate demonstrando através de medidas, se na rede social constituída há a promoção da colaboração cientifica. Estabelece como objetivos caracterizar o relacionamento dos membros do Instituto de Computação (ICOMP) na comunidade virtual da Universidade Federal do Amazonas formada na rede social ReseachGate; categorizar a produção científica e posicionamento desses pesquisadores dentro da rede e investigar se há através da interação, há consolidação da colaboração científica. Adota como principais suportes teóricos os conceitos de Recuero (2009), Wasserman e Faust (1994), Murphy (2004) e Bardin (2006). O uso da internet ampliou a capacidade de comunicação das pessoas, gerou rede de contatos, contribui para o que passou a ser chamado de sociedade da informação, onde todos estão constantemente conectados, interligando seus atores em uma enorme rede comunicacional. A pesquisa é de natureza qualitativa e quantitativa, com base na análise da rede social com tratamento das métricas de análise pelo sistema Gephi e análise de conteúdo. Como resultado do estudo, foi aferido que na rede social ReseachGate, já há colaboração, inicialmente formada pela contato entre os pesquisadores dentro do o ICOMP e que o processo de interação virtual entre os atores, se expande estabelecendo uma nova rede colaboração científica, que extrapola o limite físico e possibilita o desenvolvimento de projetos com pesquisadores de outras instituições de ensino superior.

Novel computer vision techniques have been developed for automatic monitoring of crowed environments such as airports, railway stations and shopping malls. Using video feeds from multiple cameras, the techniques enable crowd counting, crowd flow monitoring, queue monitoring and abnormal event detection. The outcome of the research is useful for surveillance applications and for obtaining operational metrics to improve business efficiency.

Abstract:
This paper reports preliminary investigations into gaze teleportation, a locomotion interaction inside virtual reality in which the user can push a button and teleport to the point at which they are looking. The results could help future application creators design intuitive locomotion interfaces to allow users to more easily scale virtual worlds larger than their play space. In a study consisting of 12 participants, gaze teleportation was compared to the conventional hand-tracked controller. Participants played a portion of Valve’s The Lab with an HTC Vive and a Tobii Eyetracker; half of the participants completed the set tasks with gaze teleportation, and the other half used hand-tracking. Using Likert questions, they then rated their experiences in terms of enjoyment, frustration, effort, distance, occlusion, immersion, and motion sickness. After answering the questions, the participants got to try both methods and were interviewed on their preferences and opinions. Our results suggest that gaze teleportation is an enjoyable, fast, intuitive, and natural locomotion method that performs similarly to hand-tracked teleportation but is preferred by users when they are given a choice. We conclude that gaze teleportation is a good fit for applications in which users are expected to locomote in their direction of focus without too many distractions.
I det här dokumentet rapporteras preliminära resultat av blickteleportation, en rörelseinteraktion för virtuella verkligheter där användaren kan trycka på en knapp och teleportera till den punkt som de tittar på. Resultaten kan hjälpa framtida applikationsskapare att designa intuitiva rörelsegränssnitt så att användarna lättare kan röra sig i virtuella världar som är större än deras spelrum. I en studie med 12 deltagare jämfördes blick med teleportation med den konventionella handkontroll metoden. Deltagarna spelade en del av Valve’s The Lab med en HTC Vive och en Tobii Eyetracker; Hälften av deltagarna slutförde de uppsatta uppgifterna med blickteleportation, och den andra hälften använde handmetoden. Med Likert-frågor bedömde de sedan sina erfarenheter när det gällde njutning, frustration, ansträngning, avstånd, ocklusion och rörelsesjuka. Efter att ha besvarat frågorna fick deltagarna prova båda metoderna och intervjuades om sina preferenser och åsikter. Våra resultat tyder på att blickteleportation är en trevlig, snabb, intuitiv och naturlig rörelseinteraktion som presterar likt handmetoden, men föredras av användarna när de får välja. Vi drar slutsatsen att blickteleportation passar bra för applikationer där användarna förväntas förflytta sig i samma riktning som deras fokus.

Abstract:
Este trabalho apresenta uma arquitetura para simulação de circuitos de lógica com binacional de topologia arbitrária, visando interfaceamento com algoritmos evolutivos para fins de geração de hardware. A implementação é em FPGA utilizando a técnica VRC. O simulador permite circuitos compostos por LUTs de número de entradas parametrizável. A livre interconectividade entre as LUTs permite a construção de circuitos cíclicos. A arquitetura é modular e de interfaceamento simples. Alta performance é obtida através do uso de múltiplos módulos de simulação em paralelo, trazendo resultados que ultrapassam os obtidos em outros trabalhos utilizando DPR.
This work presents an architecture for simulation of combinational logic circuits of arbitrary topology, meant to be interfaced with evolutionary algorithms for hardware generation. It was implemented in FPGA using the VRC technique. The simulator allows for circuits composed of LUTs of parametrizable number of imputs. The free interconectivity between LUTs allows the construction of cyclic circuits. The architecture is modular and of simple interfacing. High performance is obtained by the use of multiple simulation modules in parallel, bringing results that surpass the ones obtained from other works based on DPR.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the following research question: How does immersion occur in a virtual game environment? Specifically, this study will focus on the Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft. Approaching the question using a grounded theory methodology, the study finds that immersion takes place in two primary areas: Environmental and Social. Environmental immersion concerns technical aspects of the game including aesthetic detail, sensory stimulation, and narratives. Social immersion evolves as a paradigmatic opposition of cooperation and intimidation. Players are not fully immersed in the world until they have accepted cooperation as their dominant paradigm for play.

The use of technology based on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), a reconfigurable technology, has become a frequent object of study. This technique is feasible and a promising application in the development of embedded systems, however, the difficulty in finding a flexible and efficient way to perform such an application is their bigger problem. In this work, a virtual and reconfigurable architecture (AVR) in FPGA for hardware applications is presented using a Genetic Programming Software on the development of an optimal reconfiguration for this AVR, in order to build a hardware capable of performing a given task in an embedded system. This proposal is a simple, flexible and efficient way to achieve appropriate applications in embedded systems, when compared to other reconfigurable hardware techniques. The representation of phenotype of the proposed evolutionary system is based on a bi-dimensional network function elements (EF). The GPLAB tool for MATLAB is used in Genetic Programming, and the solution found by this procedure is converted into a memory mapping to represent the best solution, where it is used to reconfigure the hardware. In the tests, GPLAB found results for logic circuits in a few generations, and for image filters containing efficient solutions, where there was little hardware occupation, especially memory, in the cases this has been presented, with a reduced chromosome size, shows a proposal efficiency.
O uso da tecnologia baseada em Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), de forma reconfigurável, para a solução de diversos problemas atuais, tem se tornado um frequente objeto de estudo. Essa técnica é de aplicação viável e promissora na elaboração de sistemas embarcados, porém, a dificuldade em encontrar uma forma flexível e eficiente de realizar tal aplicação é o seu maior problema. Neste trabalho, é apresentada uma arquitetura virtual e reconfigurável (AVR) em FPGA para aplicações em hardware, utilizando um software de Programação Genética na elaboração de uma reconfiguração ótima para esta AVR, de forma a construir um hardware capaz de efetuar uma determinada tarefa em um sistema embarcado. Esta proposta é uma forma simples, flexível e eficiente de realizar aplicações adequadas em sistemas embarcados, quando comparada a outras técnicas de hardware reconfigurável. A representação do fenótipo no sistema evolutivo proposto se baseia em uma rede de elementos de função (EF) bidimensional. A ferramenta GPLAB, para MATLAB, é usada na Programação Genética, e a solução encontrada por esta é convertida em um mapeamento de memória com o cromossomo da melhor solução, onde este é usado para reconfigurar o hardware. Nos testes realizados, a GPLAB encontrou resultados para circuitos lógicos em poucas gerações, e para filtros de imagem encontrou soluções eficientes, onde ocorreu pouca ocupação de hardware, principalmente da memória nos casos apresentados, apresentando um cromossomo de tamanho reduzido, o que demonstra uma boa eficiência da proposta.

Abstract:
The science of curiosity is not fully understood, yet it seems to be a key component of nature which drives both humans and animals to seek out new information. Humans actively seek out to solve problems for the sake of solving them, with evidence suggesting that the seeking and obtaining of new knowledge is itself inherently rewarding. This study uses new methods to collect data to investigate how humans react when presented with novel environments and a problem to solve. Information gain was tracked using Shannon’s entropy, a measure of how effective a communication is at communicating its message across. The study investigates if participants feelings of satisfaction will increase the more information they receive, as measured by a change in Shannon’s entropy. A total of 44 participants with complete data were recruited accross two conditions A and B, with A containing a complete knowlege graph to determine what knowledge is gained through interactions with the environment and B containing more uncertainty so that the participant can be observed building their own knowledge-graph. Participants entered a virtual enviroment named Omosa where they were told about a mystery involving the deaths of herbivores on the island. Participants were given free reign to explore and investigate for a minimum 6 minutes. In increments of 90s, participants were asked questions about what they thought was killing the herd and how confident they were of their answer. After 6 minutes final questions were presented collecting player satisfaction and trait curiosity. Additional meta-data including trajectory and interactions were also collected. No significant results were gleaned due to high drop out and incomplete data. Methodology could be altered in future renditions to increase participation and reduce drop out.
Vetenskapen om nyfikenhet förstås inte helt, men det verkar vara en nyckelkomponent i naturen som driver både människor och djur att söka ny information. Människor försöker aktivt lösa problem för att lösa dem, med bevis som tyder på att att söka och få ny kunskap i sig är givande i sig. Deltagarna fick fri tid att utforska och undersöka i minst 6 minuter. I steg från 90-talet ställdes deltagarna frågor om vad de trodde dödade besättningen och hur säkra de var på svaret. Efter 6 minuter presenterades de sista frågorna för att samla spelarnas nöjdhet och dragkänslighet. Ytterligare metadata inklusive bana och interaktioner samlades också in. Inga signifikanta resultat samlades in på grund av högt bortfall och ofullständig data. Metodik kan ändras i framtida versioner för att öka deltagandet och minska bortfallet.

Abstract:
The human gaze is pivotal in motion planning and control. Gaze is typically directed at visual target sites prior to physical interactions with them. This proactive gaze (PEG) behavior has been observed in a multitude of physical situations. However, PEG has not been examined in virtual reality (VR). Identification of PEG in VR could be helpful for digital human modeling applications and human-robot interactions. In this study we asked 10 participants to perform a pick-and-place (PAP) task in VR while we were tracking gaze behavior. Our results indicate that PEG also occurs in VR. Furthermore, the action to reach directly towards the PAP object or walk to it before reaching, results in different gaze strategies. Relocating before a reach is associated with gaze to additional sites, such as the floor and the table upon which the object was placed.
Den mänskliga blicken är avgörande för planering och kontroll av rörelse. Blicken riktas vanligtvis mot visuella mål före interaktion med dessa. Denna proaktiva blick (eng. ’proactive gaze’; PEG) har observerats i många olika slags fysiska situationer. Dock har inte PEG undersökts i virtual reality (VR). Identifiering av PEG i VR skulle kunna vara användbart för applikationer med digital mänsklig modellering och människo-robotinteraktioner. I denna studie instruerade vi 10 försöksdeltagare att utföra en s.k. pick-and-place-uppgift (PAP) i en VR-miljö medan vi registrerade deltagarnas blick. Våra resultat indikerar att PEG också förekommer i VR. Vidare leder handlingen att direkt sträcka sig efter objektet till ett annorlunda blickbeteende jämfört med att först förflytta sig innan man sträcker sig efter PAP-objektet. Vid förflyttning innan man sträcker sig efter objektet fästs blicken på ytterligare områden såsom golvet och bordet som objektet placerats på.

Abstract:
Advertisers keep seeking new ways to target a wider audience while game developers are trying to monetize their game. This study investigates how Virtual Reality (VR) interactions influence user's sense of presence and brand awareness; specifically brand recall and brand recognition. A 2 (familiar/unfamiliar brands) x 2 (high/low game interactions) between subject design user study was created where 40 participants were recruited to participate in a self-made Virtual Reality game built in Unity. The game objective was to walk through a virtual city and locate the stadium while passing by billboards with static advertisements which the users were not informed about. The data have been collected through post and pre-experiment surveys in addition to two memory tests; brand recall and brand recognition. The results show that users that have the option to interact more with the VR environment can have a slight increase in their sense of presence as well as their recognition to both familiar and unfamiliar brands. Virtual reality in-game advertising can make advertisers unlock new audiences who can not target with traditional media while developers can unlock new revenue streams through entire gaming sessions without disrupting the user experience.
Marknadsförare letar ständigt efter nya vägar att nå ut till en bredare målgrupp samtidigt som spelutvecklare strävar efter att utveckla spel som genererar inkomster. Denna studie undersöker hur interaktioner i Virtual Reality (VR) påverkar användares känsla av närvaro och medvetenhet gällande varumärken; specifikt vad gäller varumärkesåterkallelse och varumärkesigenkänning. En 2 (kända/okända varumärken) x 2 (hög/låg spelinteraktion) mellan-ämnesdesign har använts i en användarstudie där 40 deltagare rekryterades till att delta i ett egentillverkat VR-spel skapat i Unity. Spelet gick ut på att gå genom en virtuell stad för att hitta Stadion och samtidigt passera skyltar med statisk reklam som användaren inte informerades om i förväg. Data har samlats in genom undersökningar före och efter experimentet och två minnestester har genomförts; varumärkesåterkallelse och varumärkesigenkänning. Resultaten visar att användare som har möjlighet att interagera i större utsträckning med VR-miljön kan ha en ökad känsla av närvaro och igenkänning av kända och okända varumärken. Genom att marknadsföra i VR in-game kan marknadsförare nå ut till nya målgrupper de inte når via vanlig media samtidigt som spelutvecklare kan skapa nya inkomstströmmar i spelsessioner utan att störa användarupplevelsen.

Abstract:
Abstract The focus of this thesis is on perceivable interaction forms that can be utilised in multi-player computer games and Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs). Interaction forms are manifestations of user-user and user-environment interaction. These forms convey the actions of the user to others, and to oneself, during synchronous communication and interaction partially resembling face-to-face encounters in the physical world. The communication, co-ordination and collaboration difficulties in current 3D CVEs have yet to be overcome. The aim of this thesis is to conceptualise and delineate the available mutually perceivable interaction forms. The research analyses entertainment industry solutions and examines their potential as providers of design implications for CVE systems in general. Furthermore, games are used as platforms in the construction phases of the research. The research answers the problems of what interaction forms exist in multi-player games and what are their main characteristics and how to apply the understanding of possible interaction forms in order to help the design of games and professionally used CVEs? The problems are approached with conceptual analytical and constructive methods. Delineation and categorisation of various interaction forms in games and CVEs is presented. The gap between theoretical models and practical design is bridged by using several empirical cases as a constructive part of the research. The significance of this research is related to the increasingly important role of CVEs in global organisations and virtual enterprises, as well as in the everyday life of people. The communicational and functional enhancements of the virtual environments and multi-player games make the interpersonal interaction more usable and applicable in computer mediated settings. The research provides a deeper understanding of the concept of interaction forms in the context of CVEs and multi-player games. The results can be used to create more supportive, appealing and communicative applications by applying interaction models and theories in the form of rich interaction design guidelines. The main contributions of this research are the conceptual models of interaction forms and corresponding rich interaction design suggestions. The results reveal important and neglected aspects of interaction forms to the world of game and virtual environment designers. Combined with the descriptions of interaction design processes the overall outcome of the work is applicable to a wide audience designing or using computer systems that support communication, co-ordination and collaboration.

Abstract:
We present an early exploration of in-game advertising for virtual reality games. The study investigates what the impacts of interactivity and immersion on consumer learning and game experience are. First, we establish a theoretical grounding for understanding interactivity and immersion in virtual gaming environments. Then, we form a research framework and propose hypotheses around the research question. Next, we report the results of the field research, prototype design, and user study. The prototypes run in mobile browsers and are tested on virtual reality goggles with smartphones attached. Based on the results, we discuss the design of interactivity and immersion, the design’s impacts on consumer learning and game experience as well as the correlation between game experience and consumer learning. The main contributions of the work are an original research framework and a set of design considerations that can be utilized to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of in- game advertisements for virtual reality games.
Vi presenterar en tidig utforskning av reklam i spelet för virtuell verklighet-spel. Studien undersöker hur interaktivitet och inlevelse påverkar konsumentlärande och - spelupplevelse. Först etableras en teoretisk grund för att förstå interaktivitet och inlevelse i virtuella spelmiljöer. Sedan skapas ett ramverk för forskning samt hypoteser kring frågeställningen. Sedan rapporterar vi resultaten från fältforskning, prototyp och användarstudie. Prototyperna körs i mobila webbläsare och testas på virtuell verklighet- glasögon med smartphones inuti. Baserat på resultaten, diskuteras utformning av interaktivitet och inlevelse, dess effekter på konsumentlärande och -spelupplevelse, samt sambandet mellan spelupplevelse och konsumentlärande. De viktigaste bidragen från arbetet är ett ramverk för forskning och en uppsättning av designöverväganden som kan användas för att utvärdera och förbättra effektiviteten hos reklam i virtuell verklighet-spel.

Knowledge on how to design trustworthy virtual characters are of importance when these are becoming more and more common interaction partners. In this study, a closer look at the suggested relationship from previous research between valence and trustworthiness is investigated by constructing virtual characters with different non-verbal behaviours and letting participants rate them in a pre-study. A second question of how perception of trustworthiness is based for virtual characters is investigated by letting participants play a trust game with life-sized virtual characters on a big 4k-screen. Results indicated that valence is not necessarily a factor influencing trustworthiness and that positive valence together with mutual gaze is not enough to provide a clearly trustworthy virtual character. Results also indicated that perception of trustworthiness is not based solely on a virtual character's previous decisions of trust in a longer interaction but also on its non-verbal behaviour. The outcome of this study will help when constructing virtual characters in different scenarios, especially when the goal is to make them as trustworthy as possible. The study also gives insight into tools and software that can be used when creating virtual characters and setting up scenarios of trust.

The social element of playing games is what makes us play together to enjoy more than just what the game itself has to offer. There are millions of games with different rules and goals; They are played by people of many cultures and various ages. However, this social element remains as crucial. Nowadays, the role of social robots and virtual agents is rapidly expanding in daily activities and entertainment and one of these areas is games. Therefore, it seems desirable for an agent to be able to play games socially, as opposed to simply having the computer make the moves in game application. To achieve this goal, verbal and non-verbal communication should be inspired by the game events and human input, to create a human-like social experience. Moreover, a better social interaction can be created if the agent can change its game strategies in accordance with social criteria. To bring sociability to the gaming experience with many different robots, virtual agents and games, we have developed a generic software framework which generates social comments based on the gameplay semantics. We also conducted a user study, with this framework as a core component, involving the rummy card game and the checkers board game. In our analysis, we observed both subjective and objective measures of the effects of social gaze and comments in the gaming interactions. Participants' gaming experience proved to be significantly more social, human-like, enjoyable and adoptable when social behaviors were employed. Moreover, since facial expressions can be a strong indication of internal state, we measured the number of participants' smiles during the gameplay and observed them to smile significantly more when social behaviors were involved than when they were not.

Our goal was to create an enhanced spectator experience to better engage the rapidly growing audience for Esports, through the use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology. In this study, we delve into the ways in which VR can do this. To test this hypothesis, we created a VR spectator add-on for a game and gathered data using semi-structured interviews. The data from the interviews were then analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of our study show that VR provides more engagement through a combination of possible factors including proximity to the action, novelty of VR experiences and the harder controls in VR. The results also show that the terms "immersion" and "spatial presence" were quite possibly used interchangeably by the participants and also that there may not be a correlation between the terms "engagement" and "spatial presence". In conclusion, we believe that the increased sense of engagement through VR technology can be taken even further and has the potential to be something more than what traditional modes of spectating can offer.

With advancements in technology, consumers are expecting higher quality and more detailed video game content. This puts a strain on video game companies and their developers as they are required to manually design and create increasingly complex video game content. Procedural content generation can alleviate this burden by using technology to automatically generate video game content, effectively reducing development time and budget. This thesis presents a novel approach towards procedurally generating video game terrains that meet a set of gameplay requirements as specified by the user. This approach uses a genetic algorithm to evolve a set of modifications that, when applied to a user-specified terrain, incorporates the desired gameplay elements. This approach can aid developers by reducing time spent manually creating and editing video game terrains. An important aspect of this research involved designing a set of measures capable of characterising gameplay elements. A collection of isovist and graph-connectivity measures were discovered that can characterise different types of gameplay elements so that they can be automatically identified in a video game terrain. This set of measures may be useful in other procedural methods and related fields.

In the field of medicine, various representative simulations have been developed to support the decreasing number of learning opportunities with real patients; the use of virtual patients is among them. Virtual patients are real-life clinical scenarios used for the purpose of medical education. They usually follow a linear or branching approach and they are usually accessed via a computer browser or as part of a computer programme. The purpose of this thesis was to design, and develop a platform for the delivery of virtual patients following a game-based approach in the virtual world of Second Life®, investigating attitudes and gender differences among medical students at Imperial College London. Virtual worlds, such as Second Life®, are 3D spaces in which users meet and interact and in which learning opportunities can take place. Second Life® was selected for this study due to its popularity among UK Higher Education Institutions at the time of the development. The virtual patients’ activities were designed following game-based learning and pedagogic principles. The technical infrastructure was designed following a Component-Based System (CBS) structure as a distributed three tier architecture presenting information via a Heads-Up-Display (HUD). The first study carried out concentrated on the survey “My feelings when playing games” developed by Bonnano and Kommers (2008). The survey was comprised of 21 statements. Six statements related to the affective component, five statements are about perceived usefulness, six statements about perceived control and four statements about behavioral components. Two groups were involved, one accessing a virtual patient via Second Life® and the other via an e-module. This study involved 42 Year 3 undergraduate medical students (21 years old). The gender distribution of the respondents was 42.85% female (n = 18) and 57.14% male (n = 24). The tendency encountered in each group towards the different attitudinal components was analysed as well as gender-related attitudes. Both groups showed very similar results in relation to the Attitudinal Components. In general, females demonstrated a more positive attitude overall for the perceived usefulness component. Other studies looked at and contrasted, provided interesting thoughts and reflections on gender tendencies and game play. It was concluded that more inclusive and holistic studies in this area ought to be carried out in order to identify game play tendencies in professional-level simulation with adults at university level, which may counteract outdated perceptions about age and gender differences in game play. The second study described the use of the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) to assess students’ attitudes again. Two groups of undergraduate medical students (Yr 3, n=14) were invited to participate. The research question posed was: “In your opinion what are the advantages and disadvantages of learning in Second Life® compared with other methods?” The results provide a different perspective to the ones highlighted in the first study. Results from the first group focused on the learning experience highlighting its importance for clinical diagnosis as a structure for learning. The second group focused on the clinical exposure although they were ambivalent about the advantages of this type of delivery mode. In general, learners did not find the virtual patient activities challenging enough. The results of this thesis show that although a game-based learning approach was followed in the design of the virtual patient activities and interfaces, the repetitive linear presentation of the cases did not motivate the students enough, targeting only low-end Cognitive skills which may be more suitable for students in Year 1 and 2. The use of more challenging branching learning experiences, such as the ones developed by the PIVOTE authoring system are suggested for the delivery of virtual patients in clinical years. All the programming code used in the CBS has been released as open source, licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial 3.0 License, in order to stimulate other interested parties in the development of similar applications in the virtual world of Second Life®.

But with the emergence of serious games combined with the latest advances in 3d simulated environments Bohemia Interactive developed the COTS (Commercially Of The Shelf) game VBS2(Virtual BattleSpace 2). BAE Systems Hägglunds’ goal with this thesis is to investigate the potential of using VBS2 as the simulation platform in a new cost effective and realistic vehicle training systems. The major focus of this thesis is to find a way to control vehicles in VBS2. After evaluating the tools available during this thesis project DSF (Device Simulation Framework) is chosen to control VBS2. DSF is used to solve the problem by simulating a USB HID Joystick which controls VBS2 through DirectInput. This thesis therefore contains an in-depth study of the USB2.0 protocol, the HID protocol, and the DSF framework. The thesis shows in the end a prototype that can control VBS2 or any other game that supports DirectInput. The thesis also reveals a general design of the core of the vehicle trainer that connects the hardware simulator SimBas with VBS2.

This thesis argues that the notion of player experience in relation to computer games is intrinsically linked to the body. Taking the idea of aesthetic experience, or sensuous experience, in computer game play as its starting point, my thesis considers computer games from within an interdisciplinary cross section of phenomenology, cultural studies and visual culture. Computer games have in a reasonably short amount of time reached a stage where they are an integral part of contemporary society: historically, economically and culturally. The current field of computer games comprises a vast array of genres, styles, stories, experiments and media. Because computer games are interactive objects, I argue that an analysis should begin with a discussion of player experience, and that this experience is inherently embodied. The embodied and temporal nature of game play means it is problematic to simply transfer established frameworks of meaning making in other audiovisual media onto computer games. The thesis attempts to understand the notion of player experience through a phenomenological reading of the interactive experience, and as such I argue that the individual, temporal and iterative aspect of this experience means computer games should not necessarily be squeezed into already established categories of earlier forms of entertainment media. Through three main chapters I explore the role of the body and embodied experience from three different points of view, roughly divided into the three aspects that make up the feedback loop of game play; hardware, software and interface. Each chapter considers the unique role and importance of the body at each point in the game play process.

Educational systems can benefit from Virtual Reality’s (VR) ability to support experiential learning. In particular, VR based games, especially role-playing serious games (RPGs), can promote learning through the simulation of various educational scenarios. This thesis proposes an immersive VR-RPG to educate players about the behavior of honeybees. The player adopts the role of a honeybee and experiences a virtual world mimicking the real one from the honeybee’s perspective. Unlike most studies in educational VR, we assess the impact of immersion on knowledge gain by testing the players’ knowledge on the subject before, immediately after, and one week following the use of the system. We also compare the proposed system with both a conventional and a desktop VR-RPG approach. The results indicate that students significantly gained knowledge in all methods compared to the pre-test. We found that the immersion level for both tested VR-RPGs did not have a significant effect on learning. However, the study showed an improvement in knowledge retention for the desktop VR-RPG users compared to those of the conventional method. Moreover, the results revealed that users of the immersive and desktop VR-RPGs were more motivated and engaged compared to those of the conventional method.

The constant evolution of technology is driving education in new directions, emphasizing the use of new tools, providing an evolution in the teaching and learning. Virtual Reality is already having and will have a definite role in this evolution. This thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of students' perceptions in the city of Curitiba over the use of computers in education. To investigate and interpret such perceptions we will considered the main characteristics of the Baby Boomer Generation and Generation Y with the basic foundations necessary using the concepts of Virtual Reality, Distance Education, Digital Age, including their effects and their possible application in education, to allow the student to discover, explore and build on their own knowledge. We sought to further identify whether the interpretations of virtual reality technology are converging or divergent among students. To achieve the proposed objectives, data collection took place in the form of questionnaires structured for students of primary, secondary and higher education enrolled in school year 2009. The analysis of the data revealed that there is a unanimous convergence between the responses of interviewees and research objectives.
A evolução constante da tecnologia está impulsionando a educação para novos rumos, enfatizando a utilização de novas ferramentas, propiciando uma evolução no processo de ensino/aprendizagem. A Realidade Virtual terá e já está tendo um papel definitivo nessa evolução. A presente dissertação visa contribuir para o entendimento das percepções dos estudantes da cidade de Curitiba sobre o uso dos computadores na educação. Para investigar e interpretar tais percepções foram consideradas as principais características das Geração Boomer e Geração Y e os alicerces básicos necessários para a utilização dos conceitos de Realidade Virtual, Educação a Distância, Era Digital, seus efeitos e sua possível aplicação na educação, de modo a permitir que o estudante descubra, explore e construa o seu próprio conhecimento. Buscou-se ainda identificar se as interpretações sobre a tecnologia de Realidade Virtual são convergentes ou divergentes entre os estudantes. Para atingir os objetivos propostos, a coleta de dados se deu a partir da aplicação de questionários estruturados a estudantes do ensino fundamental, médio e superior, matriculados no ano letivo de 2009. A análise dos dados revelou haver uma convergência unânime entre as respostas dos entrevistados e os objetivos da pesquisa.

DESENHO DO ESTUDO: Ensaio Clínico randomizado com avaliador cegado as intervenções. OBJETIVO: foi avaliar os efeitos da realidade virtual como recurso adicional na função dos pacientes com Osteoartrite (OA) de joelho. INTRODUÇÃO: A OA de joelho é uma das doenças ortopédicas mais prevalentes na população idosa, de caráter degenerativo e progressivo que acomete a cartilagem articular, limitando a amplitude de movimento (ADM) articular com rigidez e causando restrições funcionais importantes. A Realidade Virtual (RV) é um dos instrumentos que podem ajudar no processo de reabilitação dos pacientes, motivando e permitindo movimentações e exercícios mais assertivos. MÉTODOS: Noventa pacientes (65 mulheres e 25 homens), entre 50 e 70 anos, com diagnóstico médico de OA em pelo menos um dos joelhos participaram do estudo. Após responderem os questionários Womac e Lequesne, foram avaliados em relação a dor e força muscular. Responderam o Termo de Consentimento e foram divididos aleatoriamente, com envelopes opacos e lacrados, em 3 grupos: Controle que realizou um programa de fisioterapia convencional com exercícios aeróbicos e de fortalecimento muscular; Experimental 1 (Wii) que além do programa convencional fez uso dos jogos do Wii Fit da Nintendo; Experimental 2 (Kinect) que complementou o tratamento convencional com o sistema de vídeo game da Kinect Xbox. RESULTADOS: O estudo revelou redução da dor, melhora da força muscular e função no Questionário Lequesne para todos os grupos após a intervenção (p < .001), entretanto a melhora foi mais acentuada nos grupos Wii e Kinect do que no grupo controle. Quando comparada a dimensão de dor e rigidez, todos os grupos apresentaram reduções significativas no questionário WOMAC A, (p < .001) e somente o Kinect apresentou diferença estatisticamente significante pós intervenção na dimensão CONCLUSÃO: A associação do Vídeo Game no programa de reabilitação de pacientes com OA de joelhos apresenta resultados superiores do que a Fisioterapia convencional. E o recurso Kinect apresentou resultados superiores na função dos pacientes quando comparado ao sistema Wii. Novos estudos, com tecnologias diferentes são essenciais para identificar se os recursos de Realidade Virtual imersiva podem ajudar os pacientes com OA de joelho
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effects of video games associated with conventional physiotherapy in relation to pain relief, muscular strength, and function. INTRODUCTION: Knee OA is one of the most prevalent orthopedic diseases in the adult and elderly populations, with a degenerative and progressive character that affects the articular cartilage, limiting the articular range of motion (ROM) due to rigidity and causing important functional restrictions. Virtual Reality (VR) is one of the instruments that can help in the rehabilitation process of patients, motivating them and enabling more assertive movements. METHOD: Ninety patients (65 women and 25 men) between 50 and 70 years old, with a medical diagnosis of OA in at least one knee participated in the study. After completing the WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index) and Lequesne questionnaires, they were evaluated for pain (Visual Analogical Scale - VAS) and muscle strength (hand-held dynamometer).The volunteers signed the Consent Term and were then randomly divided, using opaque, sealed envelopes, into 3 groups: Control group - performed a conventional physiotherapy program with aerobic and muscle strengthening exercises; Experimental group 1 (Wii) - in addition to the conventional program used Nintendo\'s Wii Fit games; Experimental group 2 (Kinect) - complemented the conventional treatment with the Xbox Kinect video game system. RESULTS: The findings of the study demonstrated reduced pain and improved muscular strength and function in the Lequesne Questionnaire for all groups after the intervention (p < .001), however the improvement was more pronounced in the Wii and Kinect groups than in the control group. When comparing the pain and stiffness dimensions, all groups presented significant reductions in the WOMAC questionnaire, dimension A (p < .001), and only the Kinect presented a statistically significant difference post-intervention in dimension C. CONCLUSION: The association of Video Games in the rehabilitation program of patients with knee OA presents superior results to conventional physiotherapy. In addition, the Kinect feature demonstrated superior results regarding patient performance when compared to the Wii system. New studies using different technology are essential to identify whether immersive Virtual Reality features can help patients with knee OA

With the spread of virtual reality, eye tracker embedded VR headset gradually becomes a trend. A company such as Fove has already released its eye-tracking VR headset. However, the relatively low frame rate of eye tracker in VR HMD (e.g. 90 fps) makes tracking unstable with consumption of computing power. Understanding relations between gaze direction and head direction would be helpful, for example, to predict and compensate eye tracking with head tracking. In this research, a unity project consisted of a moving object with variable parameters was created to examine if there’s correlation exists between players’ head direction and gaze direction in eye’s smooth pursuit movement. Furthermore, object parameters, shape, color, distance, speed and horizontal moving degree were tested to explore whether they can elicit statistically significant differences in gaze prediction. Results revealed that while smoothly pursuing a moving object with the gaze, people’s horizontal and vertical component of head direction and gaze direction are separately linearly correlated. Moreover, formulas were calculated via linear regression to express their relations. As for object parameters, significant impacts were detected for all five parameters and interaction effect of speed and horizontal moving degree with various effect size, partial eta squared.
Med spridningen av den virtuella verkligheten blir Eye Tracking-inbyggd VR-headset gradvis en trend. Ett företag som Fove har redan släppt sitt Eye Tracking VR-headset. Emellertid gör den relativt låga bildhastigheten för ögonspårare i VR HMD (t.ex. 90 fps) spårning ostabil med förbrukning av datorkraft. Att förstå relationer mellan blickriktning och huvudriktning skulle vara till hjälp, till exempel för att förutsäga och kompensera ögonspårning med huvudspårning. I den här undersökningen, var ett Unity-projekt bestående av ett rörligt objekt med varierande parametrar skapad för att undersöka om det finns korrelation mellan spelarens huvudriktning och blickriktning i ögonens följerörelse. Dessutom testades objektparametrar; form, färg, avstånd, hastighet och horisontell rörelsegrad för att undersöka huruvida de kan framkalla statistiskt signifikanta skillnader i blickprediktionen. Resultaten avslöjade att medan man rör sig smidigt med ett rörligt föremål med blicken, är människornas horisontella och vertikala komponent i huvudriktning och blickriktning separat linjärt korrelerad. Dessutom beräknades formler via linjär regression för att uttrycka deras relationer. När det gäller objektparametrar detekterades signifikanta effekter för alla fem parametrarna och interaktionseffekten av hastighets-och horisontell rörelsegrad med olika effektstorlek, partiell Eta-kvadrat.

In order to explore the role of virtual reality (VR) in education, the Collaborative Learning Environment in Virtual Reality (CLEVR) team is building a multiplatform and multiplayer game, Cellverse, that targets high school biology students. The game familiarizes players with cellular organelles and processes as well as encourages them to collaborate to achieve a goal. Due to the novelty of VR and the intricacy of the game, a tutorial is useful to introduce the rules and objectives of the game, and to provide an even playing field to players with various gaming and VR experiences. This thesis presents the design, implementation, and user test procedures and results of the tutorial. Specifically, it discusses the considerations around key design decisions, the problems found in user tests, and the solutions used to resolve such problems. In addition to the implementation of a tutorial for the Cellverse game, this thesis contributed towards the exploration of creating a tutorial that first works with individual players and then brings them together to collaborate from both in and out of VR.

Riding a stationary exercise bike regularly can lead to many health benefits such as stronger muscles, higher metabolism and reduced body fat percentage to mention a few. The biggest drawback is that training on a stationary exercise bike can be immensely boring with no stimulation or amusement factor.

This thesis presents the development of a prototype, a road racing simulator that makes training on an exercise bike more stimulating. The prototype consists of an exercise bike and a computer game. It also features a network option, making it possible to race other users, multi player style. The purpose is to make home training on the exercise bike more amusing, enjoyable and maybe even challenging.

The focus in this report lies mainly on the graphics and network parts but all steps in producing the prototype are described so the reader can get a complete picture of the project.

La réalité virtuelle (RV) est devenu un outil de plus en plus utilisé afin d'étudier le comportement humain. En effet, son utilisation permet d'avoir un contrôle absolu sur les conditions expérimentales et de reproduire le même stimulus pour tous les participants. Dans cette thèse, nous utilisons la RV pour étudier le comportement piétons dans les foules afin par la suite d'améliorer les simulateurs de foules. En particulier nous nous intéressons à l'analyse couplée de la marche et du regard pour pouvoir comprendre et modéliser le voisinage d'interaction lors de la navigation. Dans nos premiers travaux, nous nous avons évalué l'impact de la RV sur l'activité du regard lors d’une interaction entre deux piétons, dans une étude où les participants réalisaient une tâche d'évitement de collision dans un environnement réel et virtuel. Par la suite nous nous sommes intéressés à une situation plus complexe qui est la navigation dans une rue peuplée. Nous avons de nouveau évalué l'impact de la RV sur l'activité du regard, puis nous nous sommes intéressé à l'impact de la densité de la foule sur cette activité. Finalement, dans une troisième étude nous avons simulé, en utilisant un rendu haptique, les collisions se produisant lors de la navigation dans une foule dense, et nous avons évalué l'influence de tel rendu sur la navigation des participants. En conclusion, nos résultats montrent que la réalité virtuelle est un outil pertinent pour l'étude du comportement des piétons dans les foules. En particulier, avec les récentes innovations technologiques, cet outil est adapté à l'étude de l'activité du regard, qui a d’ailleurs été peu explorée jusqu'à présent pour ce type de situation
Virtual Reality (VR) has become more and more used as a tool to study human behaviour. Indeed, its use provides absolute control over experimental conditions and can reproduce the same stimulus for all participants. In this thesis, we use VR to investigate pedestrian behaviour in crowds in order to subsequently improve crowd simulators. In particular we are interested in a coupled analysis of locomotion and gaze in order to understand and model the interaction neighbourhood during navigation. In our first work, we evaluated the impact of VR on gaze activity during an interaction between two pedestrians, in a study where participants performed a collision avoidance task in a real and virtual environment. We then studied a more complex situation which is the navigation in a crowded street. We again evaluated the impact of VR on gaze activity and then explored the impact of crowd density on this activity. Finally, in a third study we simulated the collisions that occur when navigating in a dense crowd using haptic rendering, and evaluated the influence of such rendering on participants' locomotion. In conclusion, our results show that VR is a relevant tool to study pedestrian behaviour in crowds. In particular, with recent technological innovations, this tool is appropriate for the study of gaze activity, which to date has been little explored for this kind of situation

This thesis explores the use of heart rate as a biofeedback game mechanic control in combination with physical movement in a Virtual reality (VR) environment using either teleportation, or a VR treadmill. A literature review, surveys, expert interviews, semi-structured interviews and a VR prototype were created. The prototype was iterated three times, and tested using the A-B method with 57 participants. The Polar H10 was used for the heart rate monitoring of the participants. The readings of the heart rate values were received via a script in Python in order to extract raw heart rate data from the participant in real time and sent to the prototype in Unity. It includes different interaction functionalities, a teleportation system, and a grabbing system from the SteamVR asset pack, a walk function using the Omnideck from Omnifinity, and includes assets from Unity for the graphics and sound. From the results and analysis of the data from the prototype, it can be interpreted that using some sort of movement in VR enhances the participants engagement and immersiveness in the environment. While heart rate biofeedback control enhances the VR experience, adding physical walking using treadmills improves it even more.

Este trabalho descreve uma estratégia de integração de sistemas multiagentes e ambientes virtuais tridimensionais e exemplifica a viabilidade dessa integração através do desenvolvimento de um jogo com características de Serious game. Este jogo visa estimular as funções cognitivas, tais como atenção e memória e é voltado para pessoas portadoras de diferentes distúrbios neuropsiquiátricos. A construção do jogo foi apoiada em um processo de desenvolvimento composto por várias etapas: estudos teóricos sobre as áreas envolvidas, estudo de tecnologias capazes de apoiar essa integração, levantamento de requisitos com especialistas, implementação e avaliação com especialistas. O produto final foi avaliado por especialistas da área médica, que consideraram os resultados como positivos.
Multi-agent systems are receiving increasing attention from researchers and developers of virtual games. The use of agents can control the performance of the user, adapting the interface and automatically changing the difficulty level of the task. This paper describes a strategy for integration of multi-agent systems and three-dimensional virtual environments and demonstrates the feasibility of this integration through the development of a game featuring the Serious game. This game aims to stimulate cognitive functions such as attention and memory and is designed for people with different neuropsychiatric disorders. The game construction was supported in a development process that consists of several stages: theoretical studies of the involved areas, the study of technologies that support this integration, requirements gathering with experts, implementation and evaluation specialists. The final product was evaluated by medical experts, who considered the results as positive.

Abstract:

In this essay results are developed on two different levels. First, it is shown in demonstration that a phenomenological analysis on the lines of Roman’s Ingarden’s study of works in literature can be applied to Virtual Reality works, such as professional-simulators and video-games. In particular it can then be pointed out that: i) sound is separable from the scene, but using sound VR becomes enriched; ii) the main role in literature is left for the imagination, while in VR we find richness in concretization.

Second, it is argued in discussion that works in VR can be qualified as works of art. These electronic works may have all the aesthetical qualities (based on the phenomenology of Roman Ingarden) of the works of art in the traditional sense. So, that paper has two objectives: an analysis of VR and the search for the status of VR in art.

Virtual Enterprise (VE) is an organizational collaboration concept which provides a competitive edge in the globalized business environment. The life cycle of a VE consists of four stages i.e. opportunity identification (Pre-Creation), partner selection (Creation), operation and dissolution. The success of VEs depends upon the efficient execution of their VE-lifecycles along with knowledge enhancement for the partner enterprises to facilitate the future formation of efficient VEs. This research aims to study the different issues which occur in the VE lifecycle and provides a platform for the formation of high performance enterprises and VEs. In the pre-creation stage, enterprises look for suitable partners to create their VE and to exploit a market opportunity. This phase requires explicit and implicit information extraction from enterprise data bases (ECOS-ontology) for the identification of suitable partners. A description logic (DL) based query system is developed to extract explicit and implicit information and to identify potential partners for the creation of the VE. In the creation phase, the identified partners are analysed using different risks paradigms and a cooperative game theoretic approach is used to develop a revenue sharing mechanism based on enterprises inputs and risk minimization for optimal partner selection. In the operation phases, interoperability remains a key issue for seamless transfer of knowledge information and data. DL-based ontology mapping is applied in this research to provide interoperability in the VE between enterprises with different domains of expertise. In the dissolution stage, knowledge acquired in the VE lifecycle needs to be disseminated among the enterprises to enhance their competitiveness. A DL-based ontology merging approach is provided to accommodate new knowledge with existing data bases with logical consistency. Finally, the proposed methodologies are validated using the case study. The results obtained in the case study illustrate the applicability and effectiveness of proposed methodologies in each stage of the VE life cycle.

VGWs have a number of particularly interesting qualities. Firstly, VGWs are places where players interact with and create elements carrying narrative potential. Secondly, players add goals, motives and driving forces to the narrative potential of a VGW, which sometimes originates from the ordinary world. Thirdly, the protagonists of the world are real people, and when acting in the world their characterisation is not carried out by an author, but expressed by players characterising their PCs. How they can express themselves in ways that characterise them depend on what they can do, and how they can do it, and this characterising action potential (CAP) is defined by the game design of particular VGWs. In this thesis, two main questions are explored. Firstly, how can CAP be designed to support players in expressing consistent characters in VGWs? Secondly, how can VGWs support role-play in their rule-systems? By using iterative design, I explore the design space of CAP by building a semiautonomous agent structure, the Mind Module (MM) and apply it in five experimental prototypes where the design of CAP and other game features is derived from the MM. The term semiautonomy is used because the agent structure is designed to be used by a PC, and is thus partly controlled by the system and partly by the player. The MM models a PC's personality as a collection of traits, maintains dynamic emotional state as a function of interactions with objects in the environment, and summarises a PC's current emotional state in terms of 'mood'. The MM consists of a spreading-activation network of affect nodes that are interconnected by weighted relationships. There are four types of affect node: personality trait nodes, emotion nodes, mood nodes, and sentiment nodes. The values of the nodes defining the personality traits of characters govern an individual PC's state of mind through these weighted relationships, resulting in values characterising for a PC's personality. The sentiment nodes constitute emotionally valenced connections between entities. For example, a PC can 'feel' anger toward another PC. This thesis also describes a guided paper-prototype play-test of the VGW prototype World of Minds, in which the game mechanics build upon the MM's model of personality and emotion. In a case study of AI-based game design, lessons learned from the test are presented. The participants in the test were able to form and communicate mental models of the MM and game mechanics, validating the design and giving valuable feedback for further development. Despite the constrained scenarios presented to test players, they discovered interesting, alternative strategies, indicating that for game design the 'mental physics' of the MM may open up new possibilities.The results of the play-test influenced the further development of the MM as it was used in the digital VGW prototype the Pataphysic Institute. Because games set in persistent virtual game worlds (VGWs) have massive numbers of players, these games need methods of characterisation for playable characters (PCs) that differ from the methods used in traditional narrative media. VGWs have a number of particularly interesting qualities. Firstly, VGWs are places where players interact with and create elements carrying narrative potential. Secondly, players add goals, motives and driving forces to the narrative potential of a VGW, which sometimes originates from the ordinary world. Thirdly, the protagonists of the world are real people, and when acting in the world their characterisation is not carried out by an author, but expressed by players characterising their PCs. How they can express themselves in ways that characterise them depend on what they can do, and how they can do it, and this characterising action potential (CAP) is defined by the game design of particular VGWs. In this thesis, two main questions are explored. Firstly, how can CAP be designed to support players in expressing consistent  characters in VGWs? Secondly, how can VGWs support role-play in their rule-systems? By using iterative design, I explore the design space of CAP by building a semiautonomous agent structure, the Mind Module (MM) and apply it in five experimental prototypes where the design of CAP and other game features is derived from the MM. The term semiautonomy is used because the agent structure is designed to be used by a PC, and is thus partly controlled by the system and partly by the player. The MM models a PC's personality as a collection of traits, maintains dynamic emotional state as a function of interactions with objects in the environment, and summarises a PC's current emotional state in terms of `mood'.   The MM consists of a spreading-activation network of affect nodes that are interconnected by weighted relationships.  There are four types of affect node: personality trait nodes, emotion nodes, mood nodes, and sentiment nodes. The values of the nodes defining the personality traits of characters govern an individual PC's state of mind through these weighted relationships, resulting in values characterising for a PC's personality. The sentiment nodes constitute emotionally valenced connections between entities. For example, a PC can `feel' anger toward another PC. This thesis also describes a guided paper-prototype play-test of  the VGW prototype World of Minds, in which the game mechanics build upon the MM's model of personality and emotion. In a case study of AI-based game design, lessons learned from the test are presented. The participants in the test were able to form and communicate mental models of the MM and game mechanics, validating the design and giving valuable feedback for further development. Despite the constrained scenarios presented to test players, they discovered interesting, alternative strategies, indicating that for game design the `mental physics' of the MM may open up new  possibilities.The results of the play-test influenced the further development of the MM as it was used in the digital VGW prototype the Pataphysic Institute. In the Pataphysic Institute the CAP of PCs is largely governed by their mood. Depending on which mood  PCs are in they can cast different `spells', which affect values such as mental energy, resistance and emotion in their targets. The mood also governs which `affective actions' they can perform toward other PCs and what affective actions they are receptive to. Virtual reality has as a new mediaform dramatically changed how we look at interactive digital experiences. With this there is also a subsequent change in how we look at designing these experiences. Can we use our already established methods and design principles to create content for this new mediaform? This paper aims to explore if our more classical design principles and methods of designing digital experiences is applicable to the virtual reality. Along with this i will also create a better understanding of what defines immersion in digital mediums and virtual realities as well as how we can deconstruct the term “immersion”. All of this is then used in conjunction with the creation of a VR* game and the design method “Zen Game Design (2007)” to give a better picture of how a complete design method and process could look like for VR* games.

Abstract. This bachelor’s thesis presents a study on the effects of motion sickness, vection and nausea in the context of virtual reality environments through a developed virtual reality kick scooting game called Janitor Run VR. The main research problems to be studied were which of the many aspects of virtual reality games induce motion sickness and nausea, and how these negative effects can be mitigated or eliminated. The methods used were twofold. First, a brief literature review was conducted on the history, best practices and common problems on virtual reality. Then, a two-phased evaluation was conducted, where participants were asked to try the developed game and give feedback on the studied negative effects through an interview and a questionnaire. The results gathered from 12 different participants on each evaluation phase seem to indicate, that there is a link between the perceived discomfort and motion sickness with a more realistic motion scheme and the use of sound effects and background music.Matkapahoinvoinnin tekijät : virtuaalitodellisuuspotkulautailupelin, Janitor Runin, kehittäminen. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin kahta tutkimusmenetelmää. Ensin suoritettiin lyhyt kirjallisuuskatsaus virtuaalitodellisuuden historiasta, parhaista käytäntötavoista sekä yleisistä ongelmista. Sen jälkeen toisena menetelmänä käytettiin kaksivaiheista evaluaatiota, joissa molemmissa kerättiin palautetta 12 osallistujilta tutkittuihin negatiivisiin vaikutuksiin haastattelun ja kyselyn avulla. Tutkimuksen tulokset näyttävät osoittavan linkin havaitun pahoinvoinnin, realistisen liikkumisen sekä äänitehosteiden ja taustamusiikin kanssa.

Since the birth of the New Hollywood blockbuster out of the Hollywood Renaissance in the 1970s, popular moving image media has continually exhibited an intense interest in play with Newtonian physics and tactile, immediate experience. As the entertainment industry has moved further away from analog and celluloid and deeper into a digital media space, we have begun to see new a new breed of media project that differently engages with our sensorium in order to newly use (and abuse) this interest. I term this digital media project “corporealized media.” Corporealized media, as I define it, refers to media that includes, but is not limited to, the current undertaking in virtual reality technology and other media that has the primary focus of calling attention to or recognizing the user’s physicality, corporeal form, and embodiment. Through phenomenological readings of contemporary corporealized works, I suggest that current popular use of corporealized media is potentially dangerous and inhibiting to society. It has the ability not just to inform aesthetics, but also to shape our greater understanding of our potential connections to others. Instead of embracing physical contraction, we should aim to collectively accept the possible expansion that abstraction in media allows.

In recent years, the rapid development of new head-mounted display technology (HMDs) for gaming provides usage opportunities for the mass market. A kickstarter project initiated by a well-known HMD developer Oculus Rift inspired our study. The main purpose of this study was to find out how a HMD will affect user’s expressed level of enjoyment. The method utilized in this study was a quantitative research method based on a research experiment. The thesis reports on a comparative study, in which the same game is played both with and without a HMD. Based on the analysis of our collected data, the results showed that playing games with a HMD does really give a boost in user’s enjoyment level. This may seem as a reasonable conclusion because the HMDs can provide the user with a more realistic and completely immersive in-game environment. Unfortunately there were some limitations in our study, one of the most crucial one was that the hardware was outdated, which significantly affected the reliability of the test results. For future prospects, it is recommended to use a more modern setup to acquire more reliable results, as well as optimizing the experience for the users.

Consumer grade Virtual Reality (VR)-headsets are on the rise, and with them comes an increasing number of digital games which support VR. How players perceive the gameplay and how well they perform at the games tasks can be key factors to designing new games. This master’s thesis aims to evaluate if a user can performa game task, specifically a target practice, in less time and/or more accurately when using a VR-headset as opposed to a computer screen and mouse. To gather statistics and measure the differences, an experiment was conducted using a test application developed alongside this report. The experiment recorded accuracy scores and time taken in tests performed by 35 test participants using both a VR-headset and computer screen. The resulting data sets are presented in the results chapter of this report. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov Normality Test and Student’s paired samples t-test was performed on the data to establish its statistical significance. After analysis, the results are reviewed, discussed and conclusions are made. This study concludes that when performing the experiment, the use of a VR-headset decreased the users accuracy and to a lesser extent also increased the time the user took to hit all targets. An argument was made that the longer previous experience with computer screen and mouse of most users gave this method an unfair advantage. With equally long training, VR use might score similar results.
Kommersiella VR-headset är en växande marknad, och med dem kommer allt fler digitala spel med stöd för VR. Hur spelare uppfattar spelmekaniken och hur väl de presterar i spelets uppgifter kan vara nyckelfaktorer för att designa nya spel. Syftet med detta examensarbete är att utvärdera om en användare kan utföra en speluppgift, specifikt prickskytte av måltavlor, snabbare och/eller mer noggrant när ett VR-headset används än jämför med datorskärm och mus. För att samla statistik och mäta skillnader, utfördes ett experiment med en testapplikation utvecklad jämsides med denna uppsats. Experimentet mätte hur noggrant och hur lång tid det tog 35 testpersoner att utföra testet, när de använde både VR och datorskärm. Den resulterande datan presenteras i resultatskapitlet i denna uppsats. Ett Kolmogorov-Smirnov normalitetstest och Student’s paired samples t-test utfördes på datan för att avgöra dess statistiska signifikans. Efter analysen gicks resultaten igenom, diskuterades och slutsatser drogs. Denna studie avgjorde att när experimentet genomfördes med VR-headset sänktes användarens pricksäkerhet och tiden det tog att träffa alla måltavlor ökade något. Ett argument fördes för att den långa föregående erfarenheten många har när det gäller datorskärm och mus gav metoden en orättvis fördel. Med lika lång träning i båda metoderna bör VR-metoden potentiellt kunna gelikvärdiga resultat.

The current push from the industry for Head-Mounted Display based wearable computers to the masses for everyday use suggests that academia's goals of a tight human and computer integration is achievable. Although promising, many interaction challenges remain to achieve a deep integration. Primarily that of active cognitive support in the form of focusing user attention. This thesis investigates to what degree a system can unobtrusively, perhaps even subliminally, guide attention of a user by directing their gaze from a current point to a selected point in a virtual environment. A subjective evaluation is made regarding the characteristics of visual sensory stimuli in order to possibly achieve an unobtrusive (or even subliminal) gaze guidance. The attention guidance system developed is deployed in a controlled experiment with 30 participants. Participants are asked to fire a longbow at targets in a virtual reality environment while their point of gaze is monitored with an eye-tracker. The experiment produced interesting results, but no conclusive evidence that the system was able actively guide a user's attention nor influence their choice could be observed. The conclusion of this thesis is that further development is needed towards a system that is capable of objectively calibrating the stimuli characteristics for each individual participant.

Affordable and relatively accurate eye trackers are becoming more accessible for the mainstream user, consequently opening up new opportunities for utilizing eye gaze in interactive real-time applications. When extending gaze data from an eye tracker into real-time rendered 3D virtual environments, there are often techniques applied to correlate the gaze point to a 3D object. Techniques which can be referred to gaze-to-object mapping (GTOM) methods. One featured GTOM method, region-bound Interactors, provided by the eye tracking company Tobii AB, was extended in this thesis by utilizing a custom G-buffer in order to extract accurate shapes of individual objects in screen space. This adapted method was compared against two methods based on ray casting in a controlled 3D test environment consisting of three types of scenarios with varying conditions. Data was collected from a user study with 31 participants to assess if the Interactors method could be viable in 3D virtual environments. The extended method showed some promising result in relation to the other methods, but further work needs to be done to establish whether the method in question is practical for GTOM in 3D.

Således öppnas nya möjligheter upp för att använda ögonspårning i interaktiva realtidsapplikationer. När man förlänger ögats blickpunkt in till virtuella realtidsrenderade 3D-miljöer, används ofta metoder för att kunna korrelera blicken till ett 3D-objekt. Dessa metoder kan benämnas som så kallade gaze-to-object mapping-metoder (GTOM). En GTOM-metod, regionsbundna Interactors, som tillhandahålls av eyetracking-företaget Tobii AB, kompletterades under detta examensarbete med en specifik G-buffer för att kunna extrahera exakta former av enskilda objekt på skärmen. Denna metod jämfördes med två metoder som var baserade på strålföljning i en kontrollerad testmiljö i 3D som bestod av tre typer av olika scenarier med varierande förhållanden. Information samlades in från en användarstudie med 31 deltagare för att kunna bedöma om Interactors-metoden är lämplig för GTOM i virtuella 3D-miljöer. Den utökade metoden uppvisade en del lovande resultat i förhållande till de andra två metoderna, men ytterligare forskning måste utföras för att kunna fastställa om huruvida den aktuella metoden är praktisk för GTOM i 3D.

This thesis aims to investigate an eye tracking calibration method in virtual reality where users’ visual attention from eye-hand coordination is used when interacting with in-game items. This could potentially allow eye tracking calibration without interrupting the virtual experience, in comparison with traditional eye tracking calibration which is cumbersome, disruptive, and requires the user’s full attention. A user study was conducted with 15 participants in which they were tasked to complete three different interactions. The interactions tested were a knob, a slider and a liftable cube. Where in the virtual environment the participants were looking during the interactions was recorded and processed to enable comparison. The processed data was analysed to find factors that influenced the calibration method. Additionally, the results was analysed to find at what point during the interactions that has the most consistent eye tracking fixations on the interacted item, and therefore most potential for eye tracking calibration. The results showed that when the participant is interacting with the item and the interacted item is stationary, we received a fixation for around 60% of all trials at any time. When the interacted item was moving the results indicated a lower percentage. To increase this number, the gaze data should be filtered instead of using raw gaze data in order to avoid flickering from the eye tracker. Regarding factors that influence the calibration method, the choice of interaction has a big impact on the method’s success where interactions in which the interacted item is stationary has more potential. Additionally, interactions that take longer time and requires precision in order to complete the interaction positively influences the potential of the calibration method. The surrounding virtual environment also has an influence, as a more distracting environment can negatively impact the calibration method.
Denna avhandling ämnar att att undersöka en kalibreringsmetod för ögonspårning i virtuell verklighet där användarnas visuella uppmärksamhet från ögon och hand koordination används när man interagerar med objekt i den virtuella verkligheten. Detta kan möjliggöra kalibrering av ögonspårning utan att avbryta den virtuella upplevelsen, i jämförelse med traditionell kalibrering som är besvärlig, störande och kräver användarens fulla uppmärksamhet. En användarstudie genomfördes med 15 deltagare där de hade till uppgift att slutföra tre olika interaktioner. De testade interaktionerna var en knopp, en slider och en lyftbar kub. Deltagarnas blick spelades in under interaktionerna och analyserades för att möjliggöra jämförelse. Den bearbetade data analyserades för att hitta faktorer som påverkar kalibreringsmetoden. Dessutom analyserades resultaten för att hitta vid vilken tidpunkt under interaktionerna som hade de mest konsekventa ögonfixeringarna på objektet de interagerade med och därmed störst potential för kalibrering av ögonspårning. Resultaten visade att när deltagaren interagerar med objektet och det interaktiva objektet är stillastående, fick vi en fixering för omkring 60% av alla försök under godtycklig tidpunkt. När det interaktiva objektet rörde sig, visade resultaten en lägre procentandel. För att öka antalet, ska blickdatan filtreras i stället för att använda rå blickdata för att undvika att flicker från ögonspåraren. När det gäller faktorer som påverkar kalibreringsmetoden har valet av interaktion stor inverkan på metodens framgång, där interaktioner där det interaktiva objektet är stationärt har större potential. Dessutom påverkar interaktioner som tar längre tid och kräver precision för att slutföra interaktionen kalibreringsmetodens potential positivt. Den omgivande virtuella miljön har också inflytande, eftersom en mer distraherande miljö kan negativt påverka kalibreringsmetoden.
