Abstract:
Abstract. Libraries, as traditional information storages, serve an important role in providing free access to civilization’s knowledge to the public. In the advent of the information society, conventional means of knowledge seeking slowly become obsolete. As technologies advance, libraries shall discover how available inventions could be utilized in enhancing library services and raising public awareness. The offer to discover Virtual Library project was given to the author by the Center for Ubiquitous Computing in the University of Oulu, with the idea originating from Oulu City Library. The goal of the project was to implement an interactive application that would provide a unique experience for library users and show off capabilities of modern virtual technologies. The requirements for it were elicited and refined in a series of participatory design workshops held in Oulu City Library, and as a result, the content of initial web prototype was utilized in the creation of standalone virtual reality application on Unreal Engine 4. The application works with Oculus Rift headset and Oculus Touch motion controllers and lets the user explore the virtual model of Oulu City Library premises as well as some fictional places, added for diverse experience, and experience several activities. Virtual Library was evaluated in a series of testing sessions held in the Oulu City Library with a total of 12 participants, which were primarily the library’s staff members. Overall, the application was positively acclaimed, providing an interesting and unusual library experience, and presenting capabilities of modern virtual reality technologies. Sovelluksen toteutusta hiottiin Oulun kaupunginkirjastossa sarjalla osallistavan suunnittelun mukaisia työpajoja. Virtuaalitodellisuussovellus toteutettiin Unreal Engine 4 -pelimoottorilla. Se toimii Oculus Rift -virtuaalilaseilla ja Oculus Touch -ohjaimilla. Sovelluksessa on mahdollista kulkea vapaasti virtuaalisessa Oulun kaupunginkirjastossa, sekä tilaan liitetyissä mielikuvituksellisemmissa maailmoissa. Virtuaalikirjasto-sovellus evaluoitiin Oulun kaupunginkirjastossa sarjalla käyttäjätestejä. Testikäyttäjiä oli kaikkiaan 12 ja he olivat pääosin kirjaston työntekijöitä. Sovelluksen vastaanotto oli positiivinen. Käyttäjät totesivat sen havainnollistavan käytettävissä olevan tekniikan mahdollisuuksia samalla tarjoten mielenkiintoisen ja epätavallisen kirjastokokemuksen.

This algorithm flags sections of data with identifiers called "anchors". "Anchors" can be compared across versions of backup data, and if "anchors" are identical, sections of data are unchanged with high probability and might not have to be re-written to the backup disk. I also designed and implemented the environment by which this algorithm would communicate with a host computer. This environment can also easily be adapted for the acceleration of other shifting window algorithms. I tested the algorithm in simulation to verify its results as well as to estimate the speed at which the algorithm could process data.
by Amy Ancilla Wibowo.
M.Eng.

Abstract:
This 105-page report is deposited with permission of the Digital Library Federation which retains copyright. It is freely available in html and pdf formats at the DLF Web site or may be purchased in softcover edition for $20 from DLF.
This report, commissioned by DLF, provides an overview of a diverse set of more than thirty digital library aggregation services, organizes them into functional clusters, and then evaluates them more fully from the perspective of an informed user. Most of the services under review rely wholly or partially on the Protocol for Metadata Harvesting of the Open Archives Initiative (OAI-PMH). Each service is annotated with its organizational affiliation, subject coverage, function, audience, status, and size. Critical issues surrounding each of these elements are presented in order to provide the reader with an appreciation of the nuances inherent in seemingly straightforward factual information, such as "audience" or "size." Each service is then grouped into one of five functional clusters: open access e-print archives and servers; cross-archive search services and aggregators; from digital collections to digital library environments; from peer-reviewed "referratories" to portal services; specialized search engines. This publication was deposited with permission of the publisher (Digital Library Federation Council on Library and Information Resources Washington, DC.).

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to study, propose and implement a tool that allows the experimentation with architectures that follow the Network Processors (NP) paradigm. A generic object library was implemented, allowing the emulation of the various hardware components, such as memories, registers, arithmetic-and-logical units, control units etc., that are commonly used within specific architectures for protocol processing. The integrated usage of these components will provide an environment where virtual machines can be created and tested to verify the behavior of many different operations. Besides the library itself, three use cases are presented to validate and show the utility of the tool: the first is an implementation of a processor created just for the sake of testing and the other two are implementations of architectures based on the MCS85 processor and on the ARM kernel of the Intel IXP Network Processor.

Abstract:
Currently, microelectronic technologies enable high degrees of semiconductor integration. However, this integration makes the design, verification, and test challenges more difficult. The circuit design is often the first area under assault by the effects of aggressive scaling in deep-submicron technologies. Therefore, designers have adopted strict methodologies to deal with the challenge of developing high quality designs on a reasonable time. Electronic Design Automation tools play an important role, automating some of the design phases and helping the designer to find a good solution faster. One of the hardest challenges of an integrated circuit design is to meet the timing requirements. It depends on several steps of the synthesis flow. In standard cell based flows, it is directly related to the technology mapping algorithm and the cells available in the library. The performance of a cell is directly related to the transistor sizing and the cell topology. It determines the timing, power and area characteristics of a cell. Technology mapping has a major impact on the structure of the circuit, and on its delay and area characteristics. The quality of the mapped circuit depends on the richness of the cell library. This thesis proposes two different approaches for library-free technology mapping aiming delay reduction in combinational circuits. Both algorithms rely on a cell topology able to implement Boolean functions using minimal transistors stacks. They reduce the overall number of serial transistors through the longest path, considering that each transistor network of a cell has to obey to a maximum admitted chain. The mapping algorithms are integrated to a cell generator that creates cells with minimal transistor stacks. This cell generator is also in charge of performing the transistor sizing. Significant gains can be obtained in delay due to both aspects combined into the proposed mapping tool.

Ferran, i. Ferrer Núria. "Towards a personalised virtual library: Indications from navigational and personal information behaviour of e-learning students." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/771.

Full text
Abstract:
To better understand information behaviour and how to make information delivery systems more usable, this dissertation endeavours to investigate how people search, manage and use information resources. More precisely, this research focuses on the information behaviour of e-learning students and how such behaviour can be used to improve the design of personalised information delivery systems in order to aid in the fulfilment of their learning goals. One direction for improvement is personalisation, which is strictly linked to user satisfaction and provides efficient and effective support towards the process of seeking and using information. Non-authoritative metadata automatically generated from the interaction of users with resources can be a practical solution to enhance personalised information delivery systems.
In addition, the context of e-learning students is not exclusively academic, as they also develop their information behaviour in other contexts such as in the workplace and daily life. In the case of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, there is the opportunity to study the full context of the information behaviour of individuals focusing on the e-learning environment, but also including the rest of the spheres where they develop their activities. Furthermore, this PhD dissertation studies the knowledge, attitude and skills that allow individuals to informationally behave in a particular manner. The acquisition of information literacy may take place in one context and be later transferred to others. In terms of added value, e-learning universities should provide their students with the adequate level of information literacy in order to help them adopt the appropriate information behaviour for their information age.
Overall, this PhD dissertation provides some indications towards a personalised design of information delivery systems for e-learning environments and for the generation of learning plans that are more adapted to the requirements of lifelong learners. In this sense, this dissertation brings about a definition of the elements for designing personalised virtual libraries and proposes some improvements in the description of the learning object metadata, based on the usage of educational resources.
It also provides theory and experimental evidence on how to model information behaviour patterns taking into account all the informational contexts in which a user can develop his or her information behaviour.

Abstract:

In libraries around the world there are people asking librarians for research assistance. As technology has advanced and communication strategies have moved outside the physical library buildings, librarians now respond to reference queries online. This study analyzed two forms of virtual reference; instant messaging (IM) and log-in chat. The purpose of this study was to find out if there is any inherent difference between the way the patrons or the librarians used these two virtual services.

An exploratory research design focused on numerous aspects of virtual reference communication. During the spring terms of academic years 2011 and 2012 at a community college, 1,341 transcripts of IM and log-in chat sessions were recorded. Using a systematic sampling process, 320 transcripts were sampled and their content analyzed.

Findings indicate that a length of the transaction significantly affected the outcome of all transactions. Log-in chats were generally longer than IM chats and it was found that; they were more complicated, the librarians were more responsive and friendly, patrons were more satisfied and the librarian was generally able to conduct a reference interview more often. Additionally the findings indicated that both IM and log-in chat were very similar in three aspect; patron formality, completeness/accuracy of the librarians' answer and the reference interview adding/changing or clarifying the patrons question.

There were four major conclusions of this study: The log-in chat portal had longer online reference transactions and better overall outcomes; instant messaging portal queries, although similar in many aspects to log-in chat, were ultimately treated in a less formal manner by patrons; librarians gave reference interviews and complete/accurate answers equally in both platforms and there were similar overall success rates in both platforms.

Based on the findings in this study it is recommended that academic libraries serving a general population of students use both the IM and log-in chat portals on their library websites. Patrons appear to appears to be using each portal for different and equally important reasons. Further study of virtual communications practices is needed to enhance the findings of this study as more institutions expand their patron base beyond those who can physically meet with a reference librarian.

Abstract:
This descriptive study examines effective online school library practice. A Delphi panel selected a sample of 10 exemplary sites and helped to create two research tools--taxonomies designed to analyze the features and characteristics of school library Websites. Using the expert-identified sites as a sample, a content analysis was conducted to systematically identify site features and characteristics. Anne Clyde's longitudinal content analysis of school library Websites was used as a baseline to examine trends in practice; in addition, the national guidelines document, Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning, was examined to explore ways in which the traditional mission and roles of school library programs are currently translated online. Results indicated great variation in depth and coverage even among Websites considered exemplary. Sites in the sample are growing more interactive and student-centered, using blogs as supplemental communication strategies. Nevertheless, even these exemplary sites were slow to adopt the advances in technology to meet the learning needs and interests of young adult users. Ideally the study's findings will contribute to understanding of state-of-the-art and will serve to identify trends, as well as serving as a guide to practitioners in planning, developing, and maintaining school library Websites.

This research analyzes the degree of usability of the Information System at the Virtual Psychology Library (VL-Psi), the advantages and disadvantages of the access processes, as well as the search and use of information by students of the Institute of Psychology at the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA). The research goals are: (1) identify the role of the university library in the management of digital information; (2) understand the usability of the information system as a learning environment; (3) highlight models and studies about the communication process, the usability, information system and mediate the information in academic environment; (4) analyze how this tool is used in the undergraduate studies, support for researches and the student’s professional practice life. It is a descriptive research and also a case study. The methodological procedure had two stages. The first part constituted a comparative study of the system based on the Cartilha de Usabilidade do Ministério de Logística do Governo Federal do Brasil; in the second part, was analyzed the data collected through a survey with 101 students and 6 teachers of psychology of UFBA. It was also done a literature review, which related concepts of usability, the role and trends of the university and college libraries as a space for dissemination of ICTs and the current practices of information and scientific knowledge. The VL-Psi is understood as a communication tool, a learning environment which gathers Brazilian’s psychology literature, publish events of the area and promotes partnerships through the collaborative work of different institutions. It was found that in order to enhance the development of research in this area, it is required motivation to use and appropriation the new learning centers, enabling the student to self-learn. A new educational paradigm may provide both guidance to the development of users and discuss the relevance of the active participations and democratically disseminating several information sources of national scientific production.

Abstract:
The main scientific problems investigated in this work deal with the creation of flexible open source e-Learning content and services system (referred here as Digital Library of Educational resources and services – DLE) providing learning customisation possibilities for its users. Standards and interoperability are key factors in the success of the introduction of such kind of DLEs, and therefore the main research object of the work is investigation and proposal of interoperability guidelines for DLE components. The main problem is not the identification of suitable standards and specifications, but the adoption of these standards and specifications and their application in e-Learning practice. Approaches concerning LOM Standard Application Profiles (APs) and curricula mapping are the main topics created and investigated here because they could provide more quick and convenient LOs search possibilities in the repositories for the users. Another key factor is quality of DLE systems, and therefore one more research object of the work is the effectiveness of methods of DLE components evaluation. DLE components’ complex evaluation tools suitable for systems based on flexible approach have been created. These tools should include a number of criteria to evaluate LOs reusability level and VLEs adaptation capabilities. Practice of flexible DLE software creation and development for Lithuanian primary, secondary and vocational education based of flexible approach is presented in more... Abstract:
This master thesis aims to critically analyze the state of digital libraries in Swedish academic libraries. With the branching theory of sense-making and the methodology of DELOS and IFLA/UNESCOs digital library manifestos, this thesis hopes to bring to light how far Swedish academic libraries have progressed. By accumulating quantitative data encompassing all digital academic libraries in Sweden, and qualitative data from a select few, conclusions regarding the aforementioned are drawn. Focusing on content analysis, this thesis analyzed the different components that can be said to constitute the digital library and compared them to the different manifestos that dictate what a digital library can be said to consist of. By employing the elusive sense-making theory as a general modus of mind, one can begin to understand thought-making processes behind the tapping of digital library resources. Results from this thesis found that some functions and components are present within all academic libraries in Sweden, but that the digital library primarily tends to focus on resource acquisition and not so much on resource presentation. User environments are not prioritized. Different aspects are presented in regards to mobile optimization, social media, information organization, information design etc. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Abstract:
The inclusion process of people with disabilities in the labor market has been a subject largely discussed recently, thanks to affirmative action policies implemented in our country that are, slowly, but irreversibly changing the reality of employees with disabilities. Nowadays, virtual libraries arise as elements of education throughout life and are important aspect of human mediation action in a socio-historical perspective. This encourages us to question how one can create a virtual library gathering information contemplating assistive technology use‟s solutions at workplaces? Thus, the creation of a collaborative platform aims to promote inclusive labor process and, to this purpose, entities sites that seek social and labor inclusion of people with disabilities, accessibility both physical and digital and presence of technology as potentiating resources of inclusive processes are subjects of this investigation. Considerations towards Web design and requirements of usability, accessibility and interaction with users are also made. Thereby, using Internet resources available nowadays, we conducted a multi case‟s qualitative research, in seven large companies located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and on-site observations, and the following questions guided this research: What information is relevant? How to present this information in a way that all can access? Which are the information needs of Human Resources managers and other managers involved in inclusion‟s process? Iteration with the subjects proved to be crucial for the establishment of the initial requirements of SolAssist virtual library, that aims to facilitate the dissemination of relevant information to managers, through socialization of assistive technologies, adaptations or solutions already in use in production environments. We conclude that there is low presence of assistive technology, adaptations and solutions in the visited companies, because ignorance in this regard is still very large. Therefore, it is expected that the collaborative platform that we have proposed to build will become an affordable and practical consultation instrument for managers, where they can seek information and assist effectively at the labor inclusion processes of people with disabilities.

Abstract:
Since the end of the long winter of virtual reality (VR) at the beginning of the 2010 decade, many improvements have been made in terms of hardware technologies and software platforms performances and costs. Many expect such trend will continue, pushing the penetration rate of virtual reality headsets to skyrocket at some point in the future, just as mobile platforms did before. In the meantime, virtual reality is slowly transitioning from a specialized laboratory-only technology, to a consumer electronics appliance, opening interesting opportunities and challenges. In this transition, two interesting research questions amount to how 2D-based content and applications may benefit (or be hurt) by the adoption of 3D-based immersive environments and to how to proficiently support such integration. Acknowledging the relevance of the former, we here consider the latter question, focusing our attention on the diversified family of PC-based simulation tools and platforms. VR-based visualization is, in fact, widely understood and appreciated in the simulation arena, but mainly confined to high performance computing laboratories. Our contribution here aims at characterizing the simulation tools which could benefit from immersive interfaces, along with a general framework and a preliminary implementation which may be put to good use to support their transition from uniquely 2D to blended 2D/3D environments.

Abstract:
e-Research in the Life Sciences examines the use of online tools in the life sciences and finds that their use has significant impact, namely the formation of a Scientific/Intellectual Movement (SIM) (Frickel & Gross, 2005) complemented by a Computerisation Movement (CM) (Kling & Iacono, 1994) which is mobilising global electronic resources to form visible colleges of life science researchers, who are enrolling others and successfully promoting their open science goals via mainstream scientific literature. Those within this movement are also using these online tools to change their work practices, producing scientific knowledge in a highly networked and distributed group which has less regard for traditional institutional and disciplinary boundaries. This thesis, by combining ideas about SIMs and CMs, fills a gap in research that is typically confined to treating new tools as a part of scientific communication or in specialist areas like distributed collaboration but not in terms of broader changes in science. Case studies have been conducted for three types of online tools: the scientific social networking tool FriendFeed, open laboratory notebooks, and science blogs. Data have been collected from semi-structured interviews, and the online writings of research participants. The case studies of exemplary use by scientists of the web form a baseline for future studies in the area. Boundaries between formal and informal scholarly communication are now blurred. At the formal level, which peer-reviewed print journals continue, many academic publishers now also have online open access, frequently in advance of print publication. At the informal level, what used to be confined to water-cooler chat and the conference circuit is now also discussed on mailing lists, forums and blogs (Borgman, 2007). As these online tools generate new practices they have potential to affect future academic assessment and dissemination practices.

Abstract:
The main objective of libraries in higher education institutions is to enable access to information that will meet the teaching, learning and research needs of the institutions’ communities (Department of Arts and Culture, 2015:18). Technology makes it easier to accomplish this by allowing librarians to embed products and services directly into the teaching, learning and research environments used by the communities. Course Management Systems such as Blackboard, are used by higher learning institutions to provide blended learning experiences. Many face-to-face lectures rely on an online module, and students appear to be more comfortable using the various online tools than ever before. For librarians, the online component of such a hybrid learning model is an opportunity to extend the traditional face-to-face library training and information literacy sessions into the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Virtually embedded librarians enable students’ access to library information online (Hoffman & Ramin, 2010:298) and libraries that have shifted towards embedding in online courses reach users at their point of need (Paganelli and Paganelli, 2017:55). If these statements are true, the question remains whether the end user is satisfied with the services rendered online or not. Many surveys have been conducted to assess users’ satisfaction with library resources and the quality of library services (Zhang, 2015:273). Some studies investigated library use patterns of different user groups but few studies focus on the needs of Engineering students (Zhang, 2015:273) and if these needs are being addressed by embedded library services and products. The objective of this research was to establish the role that Engineering students expect an Information Specialist to play in a VLE, to identify the products and services the Engineering students expect the Information Specialist to provide, and to what extent. This was done using a case study research design. As was expected, this research confirmed that the Engineering students recognise the importance of librarians embedding in their online modules. It is anticipated that librarians who embed online will be able to meet the needs of the students and build strong relationships with the students. If that does become the case, it is feasible to expect that the students’ use of library resources will increase. The next phase would be to build and launch a pilot project. Recommendations made for embedding in a VLE were (1) to consult with the faculty, library staff, and the instructional designer before the librarian attempts to launch embedded activities; (2) to identify the top in-demand products and services that can be embedded for each course as a matter of urgency; (3) to pilot the program with a few students and library staff and obtain feedback before the initiative is made publicly available to all students; and (4) to align the expectations or activities of the program with those of the course.
Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2018.
Information Science
MIT
Unrestricted

Abstract:
More and more the internet becomes the information and communication platform for teachings and research. University libraries and their structures as well as their services are concerned with the changes of universities in general. But are the university libraries prepared for this change? In Germany a regionally distributed infrastructure of information within the range of film and media science to be found. Distributed resources in the form of media or offers in internet are variously present, but only occasionally detectable. One of the aims of the exploration accomplished in 2001 was to provide a concept for a VIRTUAL LIBRARY FILM AND MEDIA STUDIES. For this reason the different demands of lectures for informations were investigated. Therefore a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods were used. As the first point of analysis a comparison of the individual internet offers was used on available selected virtual specialized portals (DFG promoted). Expert interviews to bring into focus the lecturers of the two largest film universities in Germany (Potsdam and Munich) formed the central intention. With this exploration analysing the interviews by means of transcription and following analysis of contents an exact need profile has been worked out. These investigations were rounded off by the quantitative method of the questionnaires, which were sent to film librarians. It had to be found out, how the intermedians assess the lecturers need of media information. With the rapid development of digitally specialized information, also in the internet, librarians must permanently observe the changes, in order to update their services.

Abstract:
Visually impaired people (DV) rarely make use of libraries for several reasons. Some libraries are unable to offer specialized services and inclusive materials that meet the needs of this audience. In this framework the Student Virtual Library of Portuguese-Speaking of School of Future - USP (BibVirt), supported by the Secretary of Culture of São Paulo has developed an audio program for the promotion of reading and literature: Literary Categories - encouraging reading for the visually impaired. The following study aimed at (i) investigating, based in transdisciplinary reflections, the production process of Literary Categories, by analyzing the stages of production of the programs, (ii) disseminating Literary Categories as a project that makes use of information and communication technologies to improve the lives of DV people regarding reading and literature, also reaching normal visual people and (iii) demonstrating that the combination of different media can contribute to the expansion of services in schools, institutions and virtual libraries. This is a qualitative research with characteristics of action research, supported by a series of references on the subject of transdisciplinarity. As a procedure, the researcher participated in all phases of project development, recording the stages of the series production in videos, photos and asynchronous communications, via email. This study concluded that transdisciplinarity is concerned with a broader world understanding, so it can result in a unity of knowledge, stressing that the collaborative gathering of professionals from different disciplines and areas of expertise has contributed to the production of quality inclusive materials, which also benefit people without disabilities, and that the combination of different media types facilitate access to them. The contribution and originality of this thesis consisted of several factors related to education and inclusion of DV people, which because of its limitations find difficulties and, sometimes are denied access to reading and literature. This research may contribute to the emergence of other initiatives, not only in BibVirt, but also in other virtual libraries, in providing services for people with a disability, expanding the collection of talking books, Braille books, books on LIBRAS, but also on other topics that go beyond the literary.

Abstract:
The process of inclusion of people with disabilities in the labor market has become a widely diffused theme of great social relevance, much to the affirmative action policies for inclusion established in the country, resulting from the struggles of groups of people with disabilities to have their education, health and work rights recognized and contemplated. The result of this process has shown that such actions in this context have led to the improvement of living conditions and human and social development of people with disabilities. In this scenario, information and communication technologies, represented in this work through a Virtual Library of Assistive Solutions, appear as elements of education and constitute a fundamental role in the process of mediation of human action, considering a socio-historical perspective. Based on this premise, the objective of this work is to analyze how we can organize assistive solutions from different sources, so that they can be used in the process of inclusion of people with disabilities in the technical/professional labor market. From then on, we realized the need to propose the development of a web system (virtual library) that could manage assistive solutions in an organized way, and that these contribute with practices that worked well in the labor market environment for people of some type of disability. It is understood that the sharing of practices and actions developed will allow innumerable benefits for institutions, companies and individuals that search for such information, being structured in an organized, centralized and freely accessible manner. Thus, a virtual library of assistive solutions was designed and developed, providing, among other things, usability, accessibility and responsiveness resources, following the main web standards present in the development and validation process. As far as the methodology present in this work, it contemplates a qualitative-quantitative study being the use of "case studies" its main method. The research was complemented with a technological approach due to the development of the virtual library of assistive solutions in question. As for the subjects present in this research, three main contexts were the focus of this research: the educational context (made up of people with a function/position of educational management, such as: course coordinators, Accessibility centers, among others); The labor context (made up of professionals who work in the labor market and perform management/hiring activities, for example: managers of companies, human resources analysts, among others); And finally people with special needs, so that they could collaborate and provide their contribution to the exposed prototype. As results of this work, are the process of technological development employed in the construction of a virtual library and its accessible resources; The validations of usability, accessibility and responsiveness present in this research; and the analysis of the profile of the subjects, their contributions and perspectives regarding the use of a technological tool for management of assistive solutions in their day to day life.

Abstract:
Global teams have become commonplace. As teams have become more dispersed, leveraging outsourced resources has gained popularity. Outsourcing can be a prudent move financially; however, when it is inappropriately applied, the damage it produces can easily overshadow any financial gains. Such ill effects can include impaired employee performance and morale caused by decreased job security. Moreover, it can lead to a less favorable team atmosphere and increased task conflict. This study examined the effects of team virtuality along with the strategic alignment of outsourcing on team performance. The research utilized the intervening processes theory (IPT). The IPT posits that the relationship between certain constructs cannot be measured directly; however, the impact can be measured through other constructs. In the case of this study, it was the impacts of the constructs of virtuality, job security, outsourcing, and team temporariness on team performance. The intervening constructs were team atmosphere and task conflict. The research instrument was an online survey. The results of this survey supported the hypotheses that task conflict was impacted by team virtualization, job security, and team atmosphere. Weak support was provided for the influence of team temporariness on task conflict. The impacts of team virtualization and job security on team atmosphere were not supported. Finally, team performance was influenced by team atmosphere but not task conflict.

This work has been written over bibliographic revision over Virtual Health Library Search Portal (VHL) database, trough specifical book markings on transsexuality research. Scientific production will be critically discussed in order to explore which ways health institution in a theorical corpus reflects its practices, under which perspectives it has been thinking e describing the transsexuality phenomenon, if in the field of illness and the interventions over it, or seeing possibilities in human care field, articulating arguments of a social standpoint. Considering that the genealogy of transsexuality is directly linked to a clinical institution, its institution as a nosological category reflects directly on the implementation of new subjective aspects in the field of gender, and constantly it requires thinking about how are the strategies of analysis on this theme, and if, as a clinical category, sensitive mechanisms of comprehension have been thought for beyond the pathological bias.

Magister Pharmaceuticae - MPharm
Malaria is an infectious disease which continues to kill more than one million people every year and the African continent accounts for most of the malaria death worldwide. New classes of medicine to combat malaria are urgently needed due to the surge in resistance of the Plasmodium falciparum (the parasite that causes malaria in humans) to existing antimalarial drugs. One approach to circumvent the problem of P. falciparum resistance to antimalarial drugs could be the discovery of novel compounds with unique scaffolds and possibly new mechanisms of action. Natural products (NP) provide a wide diversity of compounds with unique scaffolds, as such, a library of virtual compounds (VC) designed from natural products with antiplasmodial activities (NAA) can be a worthy starting point.

Abstract:
Interactivity research lacks consensus regarding the qualities and consequences of interactive experiences. Empirical proof is needed to substantiate the numerous interactivity theories and provide direction for new media technology developers. Specifically, there is a shortage of research on differences between user experiences of interactivity when technology enables communication versus when it does not. In addition, interactivity research is often confounded by the construct of presence. This study’s objectives included: 1) identifying qualities associated with interactive experiences; 2) disambiguating the constructs of interactivity and presence; and 3) developing a measure of perceived interactivity for VW research. The experimental design measured perceived interactivity and presence following completion of a simple task in the online Virtual World (VW) known as Second Life. It was hypothesized that both perceived interactivity and presence would be greater for subjects encountering avatars believed to be controlled by other people than for subjects encountering no other avatars in the VW. A total of 180 subjects from the University of Kentucky participated in a 2 by 4 factorial experiment. Perceived interactivity was measured by modifying McMillan and Hwang’s Measure of Perceived Interactivity for the VW context. Two essential qualities of interactive experiences were identified: Responsiveness and engagement. These qualities are characteristic of unmediated, FTF conversation, which was perceived as the most interactive communication context above technologies routinely described as interactive. Decreased responsiveness of technology at a second study venue caused significant decline in perceived interactivity, demonstrating the importance of a technology’s reaction speed and control provided to the user. Significant main effects for perceived interactivity due to encountering other avatars were confounded by interaction effects due to differences in technology responsiveness. Interactivity and presence appear to be separate psychological constructs which covary in the context of a new media experience. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:

Virtual screening is progressively gaining importance in the drug discovery process, complementing high-throughput screening in order to facilitate and contribute to the understanding of the action mechanism of drugs, while expediting and reducing the cost of the process.

The pharmacological focus of this thesis lies in the inhibition of tyrosine kinase receptors. These enzymes are the critical components of signalling pathways, so both their dysfunction and their privileged role in the cell cycle pathways make them pharmacological targets in diseases such as cancer and others related to hyperproliferative disorders, migratory disorders, embryonic development and vascular pathologies. One of the most common strategies of inhibition is the blockage of the ATP binding site by small organic molecules such as pyridopyrimidines, which are of particular interest for the research group where this project was carried out due to our wide experience in the synthesis of these heterocycles.

In the present thesis, most of the techniques currently employed in virtual screening are explored and validated with the aim of establishing a hierarchical database of screening to be used in the evaluation of drug candidates to be synthesized. The successive filtering steps include compound selection from a combinatorial library based on diversity or representativity of the chemical space, pharmacophore similarity searches, docking and affinity predictions for a series of ligands. The different strategies have been retrospectively validated in databases containing active compounds compiled from literature. After validation, they have been applied in the prospective characterization of the synthetic candidates.

A structural interaction fingerprint has been designed, based on the concept of atomic pairs (IFbAP), for the post processing of docking outputs as a filter step in virtual screening. Its ability to discern between active and inactive compounds has been analysed for three targets: estrogen receptor, fibroblast growth factor receptor and HIV reverse transcriptase.

We have also continued developing the PRALINS program (Program for Rational Analysis of Libraries in Silico), a program for the design of combinatorial libraries, which incorporates the main diversity selection criteria. In the context of focused combinatorial libraries, we propose a new method (Direct), whose ability to focalise has been compared to the traditional methodologies also implemented in PRALINS. Moreover, different diversity evaluation criteria have been compared, introducing a new method (cell-integral-diversity criterion) aimed at surpassing the disadvantages of traditional techniques. We have implemented genetic algorithms as optimisation techniques, both for unique diversity/similarity criterion and for carrying out multiobjective optimisations.

Within another research area of interest for the group, directed towards the development of inhibitors of the HIV fusion process, we study the binding mode for CXCR4 and CCR5 antagonists.

Abstract:
The advances in ICTs have decisively changed the library and learning environment. On the one hand, ICTs have enhanced the variety and accessibility to library collections and services to break the barriers of location and time. On the other, the e-Learning has emerged as an additional medium for imparting education in many disciplines to overcome the constraint of physical capacity associated with the traditional classroom methods. For a vast developing country like India, this provides an immense opportunity to provide even higher education to remote places besides extending the library services through networking. Thanks to the recent initiatives by the public and private institutions in this direction, a few web-based instruction courses are now running in the country. This paper reviews different aspects of e-Learning and emerging learning landscapes. It further presents the library scene and new opportunities for its participation in the e-Learning process. How these ICTs driven advances can contribute to the comprehensive learning process in India is highlighted.

Some aspects that enhance the use of intentions can be essential for the individual to choose whether or not a particular technology. This study examined the background factors that can influence the intended use of the Virtual Library of an Institution of Higher Education. Among the conceptual models studying the adoption of information technology, it was decided in this study the use of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) proposed by Davis (1986). In this model the external variables were also added stimulus Professor and smoker in order to expand the power of explanation of the intended use of the users in question. Through a quantitative research approach, data were collected through a survey tool to obtain 406 questionnaires responses. The results of this research confirms that the influence of various factors positioned in different dimensions provide findings relevant to the adoption of virtual library. It concludes that the Teacher Incentive positively influences Ease of Use, Perceived Usefulness and the Habit of undergraduate students on the intended use of the Virtual Library. Thus, it was found that the influence of the teacher becomes a determining factor in the use of virtual library intention, which emphasizes the importance of guidance and recommendation of teachers in the use of this technological tool. The study concluded that the perceived usefulness proved to be the factor that most influences the intention to use this technology because there is a perception that if the student will use the virtual library, you can improve your performance in studies, among others. The habit can also influence the adoption of a virtual library in parallel to perceptions about the benefits that can be obtained from the use of this technology.

The role of hydrophobicity in determination of macromolecular structure and formation of complexes in biological molecules is undeniable and has been the subject of research across several decades. Hydrophobicity is introduced, with a review of its history and contemporary theories. This is followed by a description of various methods that quantify this all-pervading phenomenon and their use in protein folding and contemporary drug design projects – including a detailed overview of the HINT forcefield. The specific aim of this dissertation is to introduce our attempts at developing new methods for use in the study of antibacterial drug resistance and antiviral drug discovery. Multidrug efflux is commonly regarded as a fast growing problem in the field of medicine. Several species of microbes are known to have developed resistance against almost all classes of antibiotics by various modes-of-action, which include multidrug transporters (a.k.a. efflux pumps). These proteins are present in both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and extrude molecules of various classes. They protect the efflux pump-expressing bacterium from harmful effects of exogenous agents by simply evacuating the latter. Perhaps the best characterized mechanism amongst these is that of the AcrA-AcrB-TolC efflux pump. Data is available in literature and perhaps also in proprietary databases available with pharmaceutical companies, characterizing this pump in terms of the minimum inhibitory concentration ratios (MIC ratios) for various antibiotics. We procured a curated dataset of 32 β-lactam and 12 antibiotics of other classes from this literature. Initial attempts at studying the MIC ratios of β-lactam antibiotics as a function of their three dimensional topology via 3D-quantitative structure activity relationship (3D-QSAR) technology yielded seemingly good models. However, this methodology is essentially designed to address single receptor-ligand interactions. Molecules being transported by the efflux pump must undoubtedly be involved in multiple interactions with the same. Notably, such methods require a pharmacophoric overlap of ligands prior to the generation of models, thereby limiting their applicability to a set of structurally-related compounds. Thus, we designed a novel method that takes various interactions between antibiotic agents and the AcrA-AcrB-TolC pump into account in conjunction with certain properties of the drugs. This method yielded mathematical models that are capable of predicting high/low efflux with significant efficiency (>93% correct). The development of this method, along with the results from its validation, is presented herein. A parallel aim being pursued by us is to discover inhibitors for hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) of human parainfluenza virus type 3 (HPIV3) by in silico screening. The basis for targeting HN is explored, along with commentary on the methodology adopted during this effort. This project yielded a moderate success rate of 34%, perhaps due to problems in the computational methodology utilized. We highlight one particular problem – that of emulating target flexibility – and explore new avenues for overcoming this obstacle in the long run. As a starting point towards enhancing the tools available to us for virtual screening in general (and for discovering antiviral compounds in specific), we explored the compatibility between sidechain rotamer libraries and the HINT scoring function. A new algorithm was designed to optimize amino acid residue sidechains, if provided with the backbone coordinates, by generating sidechain positions using the Dunbrack and Cohen backbone-dependent rotamer library and scoring them with the HINT scoring function. This rotamer library was previously used by its developers previously to design a very successful sidechain optimization algorithm called SCWRL. Output structures from our algorithm were compared with those from SCWRL and showed extraordinary similarities as well as significant differences, which are discussed herein. This successful implementation of HINT in our sidechain optimization algorithm establishes the compatibility between this forcefield and sidechain rotamer libraries. Future aims in this project include enhancement of our current algorithm and the design of a new algorithm to explore partial induced-fit in targets aimed at improving current docking methodology. This work shows significant progress towards the implementation of our hydropathic force field in theoretical modeling of biological systems in order to enhance our ability to understand atomistic details of inter- and intramolecular interactions which must form the basis for a wide variety of biological phenomena. Such efforts are key to not only to understanding the said phenomena, but also towards a solid basis for efficient drug design in the future.
