Abstract Immersive technologies, such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), are effective technologies being implemented across diverse fields. We propose an AR/VR-based Web app to be applied in the cultural tourism field with the objective of enhancing the visitors’ experience of the Monserrate Palace, part of a UNESCO cultural landscape located in Sintra, Portugal, managed by Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua SA. This chapter overviews the state of the art on immersive technologies in cultural heritage sites and the visitor experience at these sites. Then, it exposes the palace’s historical and cultural significance and some of the challenges it faces in engaging its visitors. The potential applications of immersive technologies in the palace are explored, including interactive storytelling and immersive experiences that allow for a higher level of visitor engagement. Next, it addresses potential challenges and limitations of deploying the proposed solution in the palace, such as technical constraints and preservation concerns. It then concludes with a reflection on the significant potential of AR and VR in enriching the immersive experience of Monserrate Palace, offering new possibilities for engaging with cultural heritages and creating a memorable and enjoyable visit for modern audiences.

The sudden outbreak of Coronavirus has impacted almost everyone. The education sector has seen a major transformation. The pandemic introduced the world to the concept of Virtual Education. As per the survey conducted by UNESCO, in 2020 around 1.07 billion students were affected due to this corona outbreak which affected approx. 61% of the student population globally. From traditional brick-and-mortar schools, students started shifting to this new mode of learning. Video conferencing, social media, etc. became new venues for the creation of knowledge. Not only students but even skilled professionals started this online platform to upgrade themselves. The pandemic has completely replaced traditional teaching pedagogies with trends like participative learning, experiential learning, and problem-solving methodology. This blend of device-based and verbal learning will help in developing the cognitive ability of the students to a remarkable level. Forbes estimates that the size of the global elearning market would rise from $165.36 billion in 2014 to $325 billion in 2025. To keep ourselves abreast with this world of online education, a few trends need to be highlighted. Trends like Artificial Intelligence, Microlearning, Gamification, Blockchain, Mixed reality, and Personalized Learning will influence how students learn now and, in the future. Also, it raises the completion rates of courses, streamlines the process of learning, improves productivity, and boosts the satisfaction of the user. The article is devoted to Desanka Maksimovich (1898–1993), the greatest Serbian poet of the 20th century, author of storybooks for children and a translator. The themes of her rich poetic work, include love lyrics, the subtlety of a female soul’s experiences, the understated beauty of her native land, people’s courage during the Second World War and past glories from history. The poems’ depth of meaning is combined with subtle lyrical imagery and musicality. Desanka Maksimovich’s contemproraries called her “the face of the Serbian poetry”. This is the story of an international community convened to raise awareness of the growing Open Educational Resources (OER) movement. The experience of the international OER Community underlines the potential of the Internet to link people in an inclusive manner to promote collaboration – individuals who would never normally be able to meet and hold focussed discussions over a sustained period. Launched by an international organization, the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP), and supported the primary champion of the OER movement, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the OER community was exemplary in its interaction, action, and longevity. From 2005, the members of the community have come together from time to time to discuss OER in what can be described as a series of virtual seminars. At two points they put forward their opinion of the priorities to advance the OER movement. Now, with support from the UNESCO Chair in OER at Canada’s Athabasca University, they are about to be invited to make another contribution. This is both the story of a community as a case study, and a personal reflection.
