Full textThis study intends to investigate how disconnection from social media is perceived to affect relationships between friends and opportunities for communication. The study is conducted with a qualitative study approach with ethnography as a method. Our theoretical framework includes the network society, virtual communities, social belonging, loneliness, constant availability and disconnection. The study is based on seven participants who, during a week's time, disconnect from social media. Results are based on empirical data from a pilot study in the shape of a form for mapping the participants' media habits, followed by a field diary which is written daily during the disconnected week, and supplementary semi-structured interviews to obtain a fuller material. The study's results point to very different experiences of disconnection. Feelings such as relief, freedom, loneliness and a fear of missing out, are a small excerpt from the participants' description of how their disconnection is experienced. Participants do not believe that their relationships are affected by only one week of disconnection. However, they point out that the outcome had been affected differently if the disconnection applied for a longer period of time.

Full textInternet has been transformed. The new Internet, Web 2.0, is all about interactivity, communication and conversations. Citizens and stakeholders demand transparency and influence. The individuals that contribute their knowledge and views demand insight into how their contribution is used to develop the organization, or they leave the conversation. At the same time the Swedish parliament requires improved efficiency, availability and access to government services. Previous research shows there is a trend towards issue arenas where issues and topics, not organizations, are at the center of communication. The emergence of e-government represents a paradigm shift, from emphasizing standardization and cost-efficiency, to an emphasis on coordinated network building, external collaboration, and customer services. This transformation from bureaucracy to networked governance requires new strategies. To explore these trends and phenomena research interviews have been conducted with representatives for three Swedish government agencies. The empirical findings have then been illuminated with neo-institutional theory and analyzed with governance and communication strategy concepts and theories. The findings show that the three agencies have taken some small steps toward the virtual issue arenas. Some employees participate in social media, but the participation isn’t formalized and knowledge isn’t aggregated within the organizations. The general knowledge of social media is low and there seems to be institutionalized myths affecting the decision environment. Management consists of members of similar age. Top management from different agencies in the sector frequently meets, and the agencies await and follow the other agencies examples. The new e-logic challenges existing power structures, as well as the myth of authority, since external actors gain power over business development. In order to fully participate in the conversation in virtual issue arenas, a change in organizational culture is likely needed, and potentially generational change might be necessary to facilitate the change in culture. Engaging in a few, carefully selected e-projects will enable the agencies to learn and expand the engagement gradually. The accumulated experience may lead to a change in the institutionalized myths, thus enabling the predicted paradigm shift.

Full textThe purpose of this essay is to draw attention to a rather new phenomena, virtual bullying amongst young people. Bullying has been known for a long time but today, bullying has found new ways of expression. New technology, which includes the Internet and cell phones, has given the bullies new weapons to use in their bullying.
The study I have done has been qualitative and contained interviews. Represents from two communities, Playahead and LunarStorm, and two organisations, BRIS and Friends, all together five persons (two persons from LunarStorm) have been interviewed and had the opportunity to tell me their view on virtual bullying.
The results show that young people see the new technologies as a valuable prolongation of their reality that they won’t give up if they don’t need to. I have also discovered that the young people hide behind something they think is anonymity. When you bully on the Internet for example, you can choose to be anonymous to the ones you bully but you aren’t anonymous to everyone. The Internet-page owners know who the bully is and can trace IP-numbers and confront the bullies.
Something my study also has shown is how important it is that adults know what their kids do on the Internet and on their cell phones. They aren’t aware of that their son or daughter can just as well get in trouble at home as out on the town a Friday night. Some future research I would find interesting is how bullying changes and adapts to new environments and what a preventive work against virtual bullying could look like.

Full textThe existence of social networks on the Internet is today seen as broad, and the number of users of the network is increasing. There seems to be many reasons to which people are using the social networks. Within the network, users can for various reasons create groups with different objectives. One of the reasons is that groups are created in order to influence a company. With a perceived feeling that companies handle the problem differently, we assume the source is the uncertainty about what the groups really are. As part of understanding what is happening within the groups we ask ourselves how individuals within a particular group express themselves and how they influence each other.
We intend to study how group members uses rhetorical arguments to influence each other, if there is any difference between men and women in the way they use the arguments, and how the group's purpose, policies and standards are reflected in the interaction. Our object of study is a group within the social network Facebook, where we chose to analyze a part of the group’s discussions by using a text analytical method. The study showed that a majority of members in our sample have a purpose to influence others. The result also shows that arguments that aim at logical thinking and common sense are most prevalent. But our results also show that a difference exists between men and women in the use of rhetorical arguments. As a conclusion we see that the ambiguity that the group’s policies and standards express actually reflects in the way the members express themselves.
