The hepatitis E virus (HEV), the causative agent of hepatitis E, is a non-enveloped RNA virus. The HEV genome is formed by a non-segmented positive-sense RNA chain. The 3´end of the chain is polyadenylated and the 5´end is structurally characterised by the so called “capping”. According to currently accepted taxonomy, HEV is classified in the genus Hepevirus, the only member of the Hepeviridae family. HE is usually transmitted via the faecal-oral route due to the fact that drinking water or water for industrial purposes is contaminated due to poor sanitation. This spread of

Viral hepatitis is defined as a widespread infectious disease involving the inflammation of liver caused by hepatitis virus A, B, C, D and E. The majority of deaths linked to viral hepatitis are caused by HBV, HCV, and HDV, which are transmitted parenterally and induce chronic hepatitis with distant sequelae like liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular cancer [1]. According to WHO latest estimates, viral hepatitis is now acknowledged as a serious public health problem in India with over 40 million people chronically infected with HBV and six to twelve million people with HCV.

Hepatitis E is an emerging issue, with the number of confirmed cases in the UK increasing in 2009-2015, and decreasing slightly in 2016 and 2017. There is some epidemiological evidence of an association of this virus with undercooked pork and pork products. Currently, there is no standardized method for evaluating thermal stability of HEV and also a lack of a suitable assay that can distinguish between intact HEV that can cause an infection and damaged virus which is not capable of causing an infection. This has raised concerns as it is extremely difficult to extrapolate the risk from pork pro
