Abstract:
Horror cinema grants bodies and images a precarious hold on sense and order: from the zombie’s gory disintegration to the vampire’s absent reflection and from the shaky camerawork of ‘found footage’ horror to the spectacle of shattering glass in the Italian giallo. Addressing classic horror movies alongside popular and innovative contemporary works, Visceral Screens shows how they have rendered the human form as a type of ‘image-body’, mediated by optical effects, chromatic shifts, glitches and audiovisual fragmentation. The question of signification is central to this metaphorical exchange, since horror frequently pushes both bodies and media to the limits of their expressive capacity. Conducting their own anatomies of the screen, cutting across bodies and media alike, horror films revel in the breakdown of frames, patterns and figures, exposing the seams between matter and meaning.

Abstract:
Visceral pain is pain that arises from, in, or around internal organs. Common examples include chest pain and functional abdominal pain. In palliative medicine, well-known visceral pain syndromes include pain from pancreatic cancer and bowel obstruction. Recent advances have increased our understanding of the diagnostic challenges and therapeutic possibilities for patients with visceral pain syndromes. Understanding the basis of referred pain is a key component of patient assessment. The complexity of visceral nociception and pain signalling is being unravelled through anatomical, immunohistochemical, and functional studies. On a molecular level, families of receptors and signalling proteins have now been described that will lead to a future with innovative therapies. This knowledge has developed within the paradigms of pain pathways, peripheral activation and peripheral and central sensitization, thereby linking and distinguishing visceral pain from somatic and neuropathic pain. Treatment options for visceral pain in palliative care encompass a wide variety of medical, interventional, and psychological approaches. With appropriate diagnostic measures and careful consideration of therapeutic options, most patients can achieve satisfactory relief.

Abstract:
Healthcare providers are familiar with the diffuse and poorly localized quality of visceral pain, as well as its somatic referral patterns from internal organs to dermatomal distributions. Visceral pain also involves significant autonomic and emotional components. When primary or metastatic malignancy is responsible for visceral pain, treating the patient’s pathology and symptomatology becomes more complex. Visceral pain can be initiated by distension of hollow organs, mesenteric traction, ischemia, and inflammatory factors, all of which are associated with solid tumors in the abdomen. Furthermore, common analgesics, such as opioids, can negatively affect visceral function, leading to nausea, vomiting, or constipation, which may negate the drugs’ beneficial effects or even worsen pathology and pain. While clinicians have tools to alleviate visceral pain, none has a perfect efficacy or side effect profile. In metastatic disease, the focus of care should be on improvement of a patient’s quality of life based on his or her personal goals and expectations.
