Abstract:
Human hair, like other α-keratinous fibres, is a highly complex biomaterial. For the analysis of its mechanical and thermal properties it is, however, well described by a two-phase structure, which contains as morphological components the highly-ordered, crystalline intermediate filaments (IFs) and the less-ordered, amorphous matrix. The presence of elastic IFs alongside the viscous matrix, results in the viscoelastic properties of human hair. Investigated here are the viscoelastic properties of human hair after two academically and commercially relevant chemical modifications: esterification

The aim of this study was to investigate cortisol and progesterone (P4) trends in hair from birth up to postweaning in Italian trotter foals. Hair sampling is non-invasive and hair concentrations provide retrospective information of integrated hormone secretion over periods of several months. Samples were collected at birth and at a distance of 30 days, collecting only regrowth hair, up to post weaning. From birth to 3 months, foals cortisol falls from 47.64±5.6 to 4.9±0.68 pg/mg (mean±standard error), due to the interruption of foetal-placental connection and progressive adaptation to extrau

Scalp hair is increasingly being used as a testing substrate for toxins and monitoring treatment adherence. The biochemistry of human hair is assumed to be similar; however, a recent study reported higher concentration of lipids in African hair. The effect of hair curvature, if any, on drug incorporation (e.g. lipid soluble drugs) is unknown. Racial description of hair morphology is unscientific. A geometric classification of hair into 8 groups (I-straight to VIII-tightly curly) was recently proposed, however its reliability has not been confirmed. Membrane flexoelectricity is an electromechanical coupling effect between the membrane average curvature and macroscopic electric polarization. Flexolelectricity is a biological actuation mechanism involved in the functioning of hearing. This thesis uses theory and simulation to develop a fundamental understanding of flexolectricity of relevance to hearing processes by integrating membrane elasticity and flexolectricity with viscoelastic processes. Flexoelectric actuation uses an imposed electric field to create membrane bending. In this thesis we model the small amplitude oscillatory dy

In this thesis, we present a sensor model comprised of a geometrically nonlinear beam coupled with a nonlinear viscoelastic Pasternak foundation via a distributed system of compliant elements. The governing equations of the system are obtained. By posing an inverse problem, the model is used to simulate the estimation of coupled substrates' material (constitutive) parameters. In the inverse problem, beam deformations are considered as measured parameters, and therefore an eventual hardware implementation would require measurements of these quantities. Different sections of human body exhibit different responses like stress relaxation, creep, hysteresis and preconditioning to external loading conditions. These body sections can be assumed as viscoelastic, poroelastic or pseudoelastic. After making the choice of the material model from one of these for the current study, the finite element model and the material code to be used with this model have been created. It reflects the overall health of the individual and all the processes in the organism of the individual and thus also the pregnancy. Further complicating the issues is that distresses in asphalt pavement are dependent on climate, pavement structure, and traffic loads, in addition to factors such as properties of the asphalt mixture itself. The mechanical properties of biomaterials play important roles in performing their specialized functions: synthesizing, storing, and transporting biomolecules; maintaining internal structures; and responding to external environments. For example, many polymeric microcapsules for drug delivery use are spherical particles of micrometers size. In order to mechanically characterize individual micrometer-sized biomaterial
