The study of scientific communication is an interdisciplinary field, where written and visual language is studied separately from one another. The aim of this master thesis is to break with tradition and look at the use of illustrations, their form and frequency, in a random selection of Swedish contemporary doctoral theses to make an attempt to explain why some scholars do not use illustrations as much as others. The purpose of this thesis was to analyse and compare HDR to SDR in relation to the visual components which exists in a picture. The questions asked how big of an impact HDR would have on the visual components in a picture. HDR simulated images of the same scene was analysed based on the visual component to compare in what ways they would be altered. The definition of a visual component is based on Bruce Blocks book The Visual Story. The result of the analysis exposed that HDR alters the current visual components and its sub components. Generating high-fidelity images in real-time at reasonable frame rates, still remains one of the main challenges in computer graphics. Furthermore, visuals remain only one of the multiple sensory cues that are required to be delivered simultaneously in a multi-sensory virtual environment. The most frequently used sense, besides vision, in virtual environments and entertainment, is audio. While the rendering community focuses on solving the rendering equation more quickly using various algorithmic and hardware improvements, the exploitation of human limitations to assist in this process remain

This dissertation is concerned with the representation of visual knowledge. Image features often have many different local interpretations. As a result, visual interpretations are often ambiguous and hypothetical. In many model-based vision systems the problem of representing ambiguous and hypothetical interpretations is not very specifically addressed. Generally, specialization hierarchies are used to suppress a potential explosion in local interpretations. Such a solution has problems, as many local interpretations cannot be represented by a single hierarchy. As well, ambiguous and hypothet

Currently, there are very few quantitative techniques for the evaluation of visibility and it is mostly assessed qualitatively since it is concerned with the human appreciation of the landscape (Zewe and Koglin, 1995 a

Creation of visually-pleasing images has always been one of the main goals of computer graphics. Two important components are necessary to achieve this goal --- artists who design visual aspects of an image (such as materials or lighting) and sophisticated algorithms that render the image. Traditionally, rendering has been of greater interest to researchers, while the design part has always been deemed as secondary. This has led to many inefficiencies, as artists, in order to create a stunning image, are often forced to resort to the traditional, creativity-baring, pipelines consisting of repe
