Abstract:
An old Victorian manse and its accumulations are especially potent symbols of place and memory. The old dwelling and garden stir collective as well as individual memories which are deeply personal and spiritual. Elements of the building, as well as old and new plantings in the garden, converge as unique and irreplaceable marks of human existence, nostalgia, and longing. The character of the house and garden is an exposition of European identity; my investigation is an attempt to explicate the hybrid nature of the manse through the lens of visual art to convey an atmosphere of age, memory, and

Abstract:
Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFR) travel is a significant form of travel in terms of global travel numbers. However, research on VFR travel is small relative to its size. In particular, research regarding the role of hosts of VFR travellers in shaping their trips including travel decisions and activities has been examined by few researchers. No previous research explored the differences in hosting between immigrant and non-immigrant local residents despite VFR travel being commonly associated with migration in existing literature. Before this research, the differences between hosting friend

Abstract:
In light of impending demographic shifts and projected strain on healthcare systems, this thesis set out to progress our putative understanding of the benefits of physical exercise on mental health in older adults aged 65 years and over. Herein, four studies of divergent research design interrogated the current knowledge base relating to the potential benefits of exercise in older adults with depressive symptomology. Study 1 set out to establish preliminary experimental evidence that four years of unsupervised aerobic exercise can improve cardiorespiratory function (determined by VO2max) and h

Thesis, Federation University Australia, 2021. http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/HandleResolver/1959.17/182594.

Abstract:
There is renewed interest in exercise genomics that peripheral blood RNA expression may be important to understand exercise mediated adaptations to exercise. However, there is little direct supporting evidence. Therefore, this thesis involved two studies to examine the relationship between RNA expression and exercise, and two experimental studies to examine relationships and adaptive response of peripheral blood RNA in sedentary compared with athletic phenotypes. In the first two studies, we conducted both meta-analysis and network meta-analysis to examine current randomised controlled trial (

The study sample was comprised of 18,953 subjects aged 18 years and older who participated in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Preference for diet soda over regular soda was higher in females as compared to males and in Caucasians as compared to other races. Mean alcohol consumption was almost three times higher in males than in females. Undiagnosed hypertension was more common in males than in females, in 65-90 than in 50-64 year olds, and in people with less than high school education compared to those with higher education. Abstract:
The United States continues to be affected by a severe, long-standing nursing shortage that is not projected to resolve within the next 10 or more years. Unsuccessful passage of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) among graduate nurses remains one of several key contributors to the nursing shortage. The goal of this study was to identify if either cumulative fall semester GPA; the overall prenursing science, mathematics, and English GPA; type of high school background; TOEFL score; clinical pass or fail; and on-time program completion best predicted pass

Davies, Ceri Mark. "Examination of viral and bacterial exacerbations of airways inflammation and function." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/56382/.

Full text
Abstract:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an umbrella term that encompasses chronic bronchitis, emphysema and airway obstruction. COPD patients are also prone to acute exacerbations (AECOPD) caused primarily by viral and bacterial infection, which leads to an increase in inflammation, a worsening of symptoms and can lead to death. There is an unmet clinical to better understand and treat AECOPD as well as COPD in general, but this is hindered by unreliable animal models of COPD and AECOPD. The aim of this thesis was to establish an animal model of COPD that could be exacerbated by an inf

Abstract:
The presence of exogenous DNA in the cytosol results in the activation of the DNA sensor cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS). cGAS produces the second messenger cyclic GMP-AMP (cGAMP) which binds to and activates the endoplasmic reticulum adapter STimulator of INterferon Genes (STING). Activated STING initiates transcription of the anti-viral cytokine interferon-b, and by extension, induces activation of the anti-viral immune response. Other DNA sensors have been proposed to recognise exogenous DNA via STING but their relevance to the cGAS-STING pathway is unclear. Interferon-g inducible protein 16

Abstract:
Background: Approximately 170 million persons are infected with the hepatitis C viral infection (HCV), globally. Of this number, 3.2 – 4 million persons in the U. S. are infected with HCV. Although previous research has indicated a decrease in the rates of Hepatitis C in the U.S. approximately 12,000 deaths occur annually from those who suffer from chronic liver disease, as a result of being chronic carriers of HCV. Being a recipient of blood transfusions prior to 1992, intravenous drug users (IDUs), or persons with multiple sex partners are associated with increased risk for HCV infection

Abstract:
This study seeks to address three main questions: How do Panegyric VI, Lactantius, and Eusebius characterise and utilise their respective visions in their narratives? In what ways are they similar and/or different? Are some or all of the accounts related and, if so, how do they contribute to the Christian Vision legend? In Chapter One the vision narrative in Panegyric VI is deconstructed to show that the panegyrist describes the vision as taking place on Constantine’s return march from Massalia and that he is describing a dream-vision that took place at the sanctuary of Apollo at Grand. Abstract:
This research program investigated why self-initiated expatriates intend to repatriate and do repatriate from abroad, using samples of skilled South Australian workers. Due to a lack of theoretical explanations for self-initiated repatriation, this three-stage program sought to provide a theoretically-based view of how home-country attraction factors, host-country embeddedness factors, and dynamic factors explain intentions to repatriate and repatriation and how intentions predicted repatriation. Anecdotal and other evidence indicates that public attitudes to retail banks have been affected by changes in banking practices. There is a perceived gap between the public statements by banks as to services offered and customers' expectations and experience. By being "authorised" under legislation to operate, banks are seen to occupy a special position within the business community in Australia.
