Early cortical injury has been attributed to the consequential effects of various factors, such as alcohol, drug addiction, smoking, and inadequate nutrient intakes during periods of pregnancy and lactation, or delivery of infants by forceps, and premature deliveries. These are only a few examples of circumstances, or "injury", that may result in disorders ranging from mild learning difficulties to aggressive behaviour. Injury to the cortex during the early years of development has been know to result in poor behavioural outcome into adulthood. Presently, the most common form of treatment incl

Three dried cricket products – Oven-roasted Cricket Meal (ORCM), Oven-roasted Cricket Powder (ORCP), and Spray-dried Cricket Powder (SDCP) – were prepared and compared to assess their relative nutritional, functional, and sensory properties. The range of particle sizes in SDCP was wider than that of ORCP; while SDCP had more particles in the 7.78-22.0 µm range, it also had more particles in the 176-498 µm range, which contributed to differences in functional and sensory properties. ORCM and SDCP meet the FDA definition of an "excellent source" of vitamin B2, ORCP is a "good source" of vitamin

Abstract:
Vitamin D plays a role in the prevention of rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. However, direct activity of vitamin D and Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) in bone cells has not been fully understood. Vitamin D receptor activities in bone cells are modulated by the dietary calcium in endocrine and bone paracrine/autocrine pathways in various studies. However, confirmation of direct VDR activities in bone cells in conjunction with calcium interactions on genetically modified animals has not been previously evaluated. Studies in these settings will assist our understanding of Vitamin D activi

Abstract:
This study was designed to investigate the relationship between retinol intake, bone mineral density, and falls in 101 elderly women aged 72 to 90 years (78.6 yrs. 4.3 yrs.). Bone mineral density (BMD) (g/cm) of the left hip, anterior-posterior lumbar spine (L3), and lateral spine (L3) was measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Dietary intake and physical activity were assessed by validated questionnaires (the 100-item Block Food Frequency Questionnaire and the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly, respectively). Isometric hip abduction strength of the right and left legs was

Abstract:
Long-term maintenance of bone mineral density (BMD) in premenopausal women is critical to preventing osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures. This thesis aimed to investigate potential strategies to optimise long-term bone health in younger women in a cohort of women who 12 years previously had participated in a 2-year randomised controlled trial (RCT) of an osteoporosis education intervention. In the original trial, women were randomised at baseline to receive group education (the Osteoporosis Prevention and Self-management course (OPSMC)) or an information leaflet. All women also received in
